Fabricating Fibrous Network Aerogel of ZIF-67 Nanoflower Loaded with Nano Co2B and Cellulose Nanofiber for Catalytic NaBH4 Hydrolysis

Tan Zhe,Li Wenzhuo,Shangguan Hanlu,Wang Huixing,Wang Yufeng,Cheng Lei,Sun Lixian,Yan Puxuan

Aerogels are attractive for catalytic applications due to their ultra-low density and high surface area. Here, we prepare a novel composite aerogel integrating chitosan, cellulose, carbon nanofibers, and micron-sized Co 2 B@ZIF-67 catalyst via sol-gel and freeze-drying methods. The free-standing Co 2 B@e-ZIF-67 exhibits a hydrogen generation rate of 13,701.1 mL min⁻ 1 g⁻ 1 , attributed to the uniform immobilization of Co 2 B active species within the ZIF-67 framework, which prevents agglomeration and maximizes active site exposure. When embedded in the aerogel, the catalyst achieves a hydrogen generation rate of 9,811.7 mL min⁻ 1 g⁻ 1 , with an active site exposure efficiency of 71.7% and a low mass loss of 7.9% after reaction. The aerogel’s chemically crosslinked network ensures uniform catalyst dispersion and structural stability. Moreover, the use of natural polysaccharides (chitosan and cellulose) as the aerogel skeleton provides inherent biodegradability and recyclability, making this system a promising candidate for sustainable catalytic hydrogen production. ZIF-8 and ZIF-67 nanomaterials suppress Nosema bombycis proliferation by mitigating oxidative stress and activating the Toll pathway

Wei Xue,Wenwen Jiang,Shuyi Liu,Na Zhang,Shengyan Xiao,Zi Liang,Patience-Kamarseh Barbour,Tao Geng,Ping Wu

ZIF-8 and ZIF-67 are effective against Nosema bombycis infection in silkworms. • ZIF-67 can directly damage spores' structure, showing superior protective efficacy. • ZIF-8 and ZIF-67 can mitigate infection-induced oxidative stress in silkworm. • ZIF-8 and ZIF-67 can activate the host's Toll immune signaling pathway. Pebrine disease, caused by Nosema bombycis , threatens global sericulture due to the lack of green and efficient control agents. Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are promising antimicrobial nanomaterials, but their efficacy and mechanism against microsporidia in insects remain unexplored. In this study, we synthesized and characterized ZIF-8 and ZIF-67 nanomaterials to evaluate their protective effects against N. bombycis infection in silkworms and to investigate the underlying mechanisms. Results showed that both materials, administered at 150 μg/g body weight, significantly suppressed the proliferation of N. bombycis and markedly improved the survival rate of infected silkworms, with ZIF-67 showing superior efficacy. Mechanistically, ZIF-67 directly damaged spore structure, while both materials alleviated host oxidative stress by reducing reactive oxygen species levels and upregulating antioxidant enzyme genes ( GSTs1, CAT, Aldh ), and activated the Toll signaling pathway to increase the expression of antimicrobial peptides genes (g loverin2, Attacin1 ). In conclusion, ZIF-8 and ZIF-67, particularly ZIF-67, protect silkworms through a multi-mechanistic strategy involving direct pathogen damage, enhanced host antioxidant capacity, and innate immune activation. Our work not only proposes novel nano-candidates for pebrine control but also provides insights for sustainable agricultural applications.

Uniform silica-infused ZIF-67 derived Fischer−Tropsch cobalt catalyst integrated with ZSM-5 for sustainable aviation fuel synthesis

Guoqing Chen,Zhongchen Ma,Wenli Gu,Pu Liu,Tian Lan,Yong Lu

The direct production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) through Fischer−Tropsch synthesis (FTS) has garnered significant interest within the energy and petrochemical sectors. However, attaining high SAF selectivity remains a critical hurdle, as the inherent maximum selectivity for the C 8 −C 16 hydrocarbon fraction in traditional FTS process hovers around 41%. Here, we report a promising bifunctional catalyst system for FTS to SAF, featuring cobalt nanoparticles (Co NPs) embedded within amorphous silica (Co@ x Si) integrated with ZSM-5 zeolite. The optimal catalyst system was identified by combining Co@ 3 Si derived from an APTES-infused ZIF-67 (with a 3:1 mass ratio of APTES to ZIF-67) with two mass fractions of a ZSM-5 (Co@ 3 Si& 2 Z5). This formulation achieved a 75.2% selectivity to C 8 −C 16 hydrocarbons with an iso-paraffins proportion of 24.3%, while effectively minimizing CH 4 formation to 6.3%. It also sustained a high CO conversion of 85.1% and was stable for at least 168 h. The Co@ 3 Si, leveraging its abundant active cobalt sites and distinctive confined structure, not only improved CO adsorption and activation but also extended the residence time of −CH x intermediates on the surface of Co NPs, thereby efficiently facilitating the formation of long-chain hydrocarbons. The ZSM-5 zeolite facilitated the selective catalytic cracking and isomerization of long-chain hydrocarbons, effectively converting them into SAF-range paraffins. The collaborative synergy between the two core components forms an efficient catalytic process akin to an assembly line, enabling the highly selective direct transformation of syngas into SAF.

ZIF-67-Hmim-PDMS-PEO/pebax mixed matrix membranes: enhanced CO2 separation performance through interfacial design and synergistic effects

Huiping Huang,Dan Zhao,Yuanfa Liu,Shuhui Chen,Lele Wang,Jizhong Ren

With the escalating environmental challenges posed by CO 2 emissions, particularly the greenhouse effect, the development of efficient CO 2 utilization and storage technologies have become critically important. The mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) have emerged as promising candidates for gas separation due to their superior permeability and selectivity. However, practical applications are often hindered by issues such as nanoparticle agglomeration and poor compatibility between fillers and polymer matrices. In this study, a pre-assembly strategy was proposed. Through 2-methylimidazole (Hmim) served as a molecular bridge connecting the ZIF-67 with the polydimethylsiloxane-poly(ethylene oxide) (PDMS-PEO) block copolymer, the ternary ZIF-67-Hmim-PDMS-PEO nanofluid was constructed, which was subsequently blended with Pebax1657 to fabricate high-performance MMMs for CO 2 separation. Comprehensive characterization of the ZIF-67-Hmim-PDMS-PEO/Pebax1657 MMMs was conducted using SEM, XRD, FTIR, TGA, and DSC techniques. The results demonstrated that the ternary blending strategy involving ZIF-67, Hmim, and PDMS-PEO not only significantly enhanced the dispersion stability of ZIF-67 nanoparticles but also improved their compatibility with the polymer matrix. Remarkably, the incorporation of ZIF-67-Hmim-PDMS-PEO nanofluid led to substantial improvements in CO 2 permeability while maintaining selectivity. The membrane with 20 wt% ZIF-67-Hmim-PDMS-PEO demonstrated CO 2 /N 2 selectivity significantly surpassed that of the membrane prepared without pre-assembly. The membrane containing 30 wt% nanofluid exhibited a 235% enhancement (343.0 Barrer) in CO 2 permeability compared to pristine Pebax1657 membranes, with the selectivity of 51.2, reaching the 2008 upper bound for CO 2 /N 2 separation. These findings highlight the effectiveness of our approach in addressing key challenges in MMMs development for advanced gas separation applications.

Lihua Fan,Jiangxue Wang,Luyao Zhang,Wenrui Li,Di Wu,Yongning Wu,Guoliang Li

A multifunctional ZIF-67@Carmine (ZIF-67@Car) nanomaterial was synthesized and incorporated into a matrix of konjac glucomannan and carboxymethyl chitosan (KGM/CMCS, KC) to fabricate an intelligent active packaging film with dual functionality: active preservation and real-time freshness monitoring. Results indicated that KC remarkably enhanced the uniform distribution of ZIF-67@Car particle. Meanwhile, the addition of 20% ZIF-67@Car significantly improved the mechanical performance, hydrophobicity, and UV-blocking ability of the composite film. The optimized film demonstrated an ultimate tensile strength of 10.16 ± 1.05 Mpa and an elongation at break of 27.87 ± 3.53%. For active preservation, the film exhibited strong antioxidant activity (approximately 50% higher than pristine KC film) and potent antibacterial properties with over 99% inhibition rate. For intelligent monitoring, the film displayed a distinct colorimetric response to ammonia, transitioning from purple to brown during shrimp spoilage tests, enabling real-time visual freshness assessment. These findings confirm that the KC/ZIF-67@Car nanocomposite films, endowed with excellent antibacterial and ammonia-responsive functions, hold significant potential as intelligent active packaging materials for practical food preservation and quality assessment.

Triboelectric nanogenerator based on ZIF-8/ZIF-67/CF composites for self-powered HCHO sensing and indoor environmental monitoring

Ning Luo,Xiaqing Zhang,Lujia Zhu,Yuqing Yin,Jiarui Wu,Tong Li,Congcong Liu

ZZP-TENGs are designed for monitoring the HCHO concentration with high-pressure gas streams. • ZZP-TENG exhibited excellent sensing performance of HCHO. • ZZP-TENGs can be employed to construct an HCHO early warning system. • ZZP-TENG is applicable for detecting changes in indoor HCHO concentration. Formaldehyde (HCHO), a hazardous volatile organic compound, poses serious threats to human health in daily life and industrial environments. Herein, a pulse airflow-driven triboelectric nanogenerator (ZZP-TENG) with a ZIF-8/ZIF-67/copper foam composite microstructure was fabricated for high-sensitivity HCHO detection. Benefiting from micro/nano structural modification, the ZZP-TENG efficiently harvested ambient mechanical energy, yielding a short-circuit current of 3.62 μA and a maximum output power of 45.63 μW. Its stable energy output could drive 54 LEDs and charge various capacitors, demonstrating reliable energy-harvesting capacity. The sensor exhibited an 80% response toward HCHO at 40 ppm, along with a 30 s response time and an 80 s recovery time at 20 ppm. To verify practical indoor application feasibility, a simulated post-renovation HCHO release scenario was constructed with HCHO-containing wood blocks, supporting accurate indoor air quality assessment and environmental safety evaluation. In this study, an improved extreme learning machine (ELM) algorithm was employed to classify HCHO signals from the ZZP-TENG sensor. The ELM model realized 100% HCHO concentration recognition accuracy and constructed a three-level safety early warning system, achieving real-time intelligent indoor HCHO monitoring. This work realizes simultaneous airflow energy harvesting and HCHO detection, providing a novel route for integrated gas sensors and broadening the application of TENGs in self-powered indoor environmental monitoring. After the decoration of indoor residential and office spaces, formaldehyde (HCHO) is continuously released from building materials, furniture, and coatings, posing a serious threat to human health due to its chronic toxicity and carcinogenicity. When HCHO accumulates beyond the safe threshold, it causes eye irritation, respiratory inflammation, and long-term immune system disorders. In this study, a pulse airflow-driven triboelectric nanogenerator (ZZP-TENG) with a ZIF-8/ZIF-67/copper foam composite microstructure was fabricated for high-sensitivity HCHO detection. The self-powered device efficiently harvested ambient mechanical energy and delivered sufficient electrical output for continuous sensing. By integrating with a machine learning framework, the system achieved precise and graded evaluation of dynamic formaldehyde concentration throughout a six-week natural attenuation process. Furthermore, the integrated wireless alarm system enables real-time risk warning once pollutants exceed the safety threshold, realizing intelligent, long-term, and safe indoor air quality monitoring for residential and office environments. Boosting peroxymonosulfate activation for efficient acetaminophen degradation by oxygen vacancy-rich Co3O4 derived from ZIF-67 via NaBH4 reduction

Fei Yan,Wenhui You,Guangle Zhou,Lina Wei,Xiaolong Yang,Luao Wu,Jun Ke,Lidong Wang

This study synthesized Co 3 O 4 by calcining ZIF-67, and further prepared Co 3 O 4 -V O -3 catalyst rich in oxygen vacancies through NaBH 4 reduction. Co 3 O 4 -V O -3 can activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to efficiently degrade acetaminophen (APAP). The experimental results indicate that the optimal dosage of NaBH 4 for reducing Co 3 O 4 is 1:1, and the optimal reduction time is 3 h. Under the reaction conditions of 25 °C and pH= 7, 0.1 g/L Co 3 O 4 -V O -3 can degrade over 98.5% of APAP within 5 min, which is much faster than the activity of the original Co 3 O 4 catalyst. XPS analysis showed that the content of Co 2+ and oxygen vacancies in Co 3 O 4 -V O -3 was significantly higher than that in Co 3 O 4 , indicating that the reduction treatment of NaBH 4 resulted in the generation of a large number of oxygen vacancies in Co 3 O 4 . Co 3 O 4 -V O -3 has good environmental tolerance and can maintain good performance in a wide pH range (5−11) and under the interference of various inorganic anions. The results of free radical quenching experiments and EPR tests indicate that multiple reactive oxygen species are generated in the Co 3 O 4 -V O -3/PMS system, among which O 2 •− and 1 O 2 contribute the most to the degradation of APAP. This study provides an efficient and environmentally tolerant catalyst for activating PMS to degrade APAP, providing a reliable option for the removal of recalcitrant pollutants in actual water bodies.

Pressure-triggered dynamically tunable TiO2/CNFs@Co/C aerogel derived from MXene/PAN@ZIF-67 for broadband microwave absorption

Zhao Meng,Haibo Yang,Yongzhen Ma,Yan Cheng,Yanlong Ma,Binglong Zheng,Hongwei Zhou,Ying Lin

In increasingly complex electromagnetic environments, developing high-performance and dynamically tunable electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption materials is essential. This study designed a pressure-responsive TiO2/CNFs@Co/C elastic aerogel for efficient EMW absorption. A 3D interpenetrating structure consisting of Ti3C2Tx MXene-derived TiO2 nanosheets, magnetic Co/C frameworks, and carbon nanofibers was constructed via electrospinning combined with in situ synthesis. This 3D interpenetrating structure constructs abundant heterogeneous interfaces, thereby enhancing interfacial polarization. The results demonstrate that the composite achieves an exceptionally broad effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 8.17 GHz at a thickness of 2.7 mm, with only 10 wt% filler loading. Additionally, the composite exhibits strong environmental tolerance, including hydrophobicity, stretchability, and thermal insulation. Notably, the alginate-induced elastic aerogels enable dynamic tuning from 6.4 to 18 GHz under compressive strains of 0% to 66%. This work designs dynamically tunable, high-performance EMW absorbers through component optimization and interface engineering, providing a promising strategy for the preparation of next-generation multifunctional intelligent EMW absorbers.

In situ ZIF-67-functionalized polypropylene separator for stabilized Mg deposition and quinone shuttle inhibition in Mg-organic batteries

Tianlong Huang,Zhen Mu,Yuanxiang Zhang,Xiaoxiao Wang,Maosheng Cui,Guoqiang Hu,Lingxiu Chen,Yang Zhang,Xiaolan Xue

Magnesium-metal organic batteries (MMOBs) combine high charge-storage capacity with resource abundance and favorable material economics. However, their application is limited by dissolved organic shuttle and separator issues, including thick, costly glass fiber (GF) separators and poor coating adhesion on commercial separators. Herein, we report a rationally designed ZIF-67@polypropylene (PP) separator, fabricated via a robust in situ nucleation strategy that yields a dense, binder-free, and conformal MOF layer on both faces of a commercial substrate. Compared with conventional coating, this in situ modification strategy not only suppresses shuttle and improves wettability, but also strengthens interfacial bonding, enhancing mechanical robustness and durability. Benefiting from well-defined pores, ZIF-67 acts as an ion sieve that effectively suppresses anthraquinone (AQ) dissolution/shuttle while facilitating Mg 2+ transport and accelerating redox kinetics. Consequently, symmetric Mg||Mg cells employing this modified separator deliver an extended lifespan exceeding 1300 h with a mere ∼90 mV overpotential at 0.05 mA cm −2 . More impressively, Mg||AQ full cells demonstrate exceptional durability, retaining a reversible capacity of 94.5 mAh g −1 after 250 cycles at 0.1 A g −1 . This work highlights the critical role of in-situ separator modification in unlocking the full potential of sustainable MMOBs.

Development of ammonia-sensitive carboxymethyl cellulose/pectin colorimetric films with sodium lignosulfonate-regulated ZIF-67 for pork freshness monitoring

Zhihang Xu,Jian Du,Peng Shan,Yali Zhao,Chenglong Fu,Jinwen Hu,Yehan Tao,Chao Li,Yanna Lv,Haisong Wang

Volatile amines generated during meat spoilage provide direct chemical signals for freshness evaluation, but rapidly translating these signals into stable visual responses remains a challenge. Herein, a rapid colorimetric indicator film was developed by incorporating sodium lignosulfonate-regulated ZIF-67 (ZIF-67@SLS) into a sodium carboxymethyl cellulose/pectin (CP) matrix. Modification with SLS endows ZIF-67 with a surface that exhibits greater affinity for amine compounds, thereby enabling it to interact more efficiently with volatile amines associated with meat spoilage. After integration into the CP matrix, CP/ZIF-67@SLS-5% achieved a ΔE of 19.72 after 10 min of NH 3 exposure, representing an 83.8% increase compared to CP/ZIF-67 (ΔE = 10.73), indicating a faster and stronger ammonia-responsive color transition. Meanwhile, the CP/ZIF-67@SLS-5% film maintained good color stability during 21 days of storage at 4, 25, and 50 °C, with ΔE values remaining below 5. The optimized CP/ZIF-67@SLS-5% film also exhibited improved mechanical and barrier performance, with tensile strength and elongation at break reaching 6.49 ± 0.08 MPa and 46.10 ± 2.04%, respectively, and water vapor transmission rate decreasing to 767.71 g m −2 d −1 . When applied to pork freshness monitoring at 4 and 25 °C, the CP/ZIF-67@SLS-5% film displayed visible color transitions from pale purple to brown during storage, enabling timely visual indication of pork spoilage. This work demonstrates that SLS-regulated ZIF-67 can serve as a response-active colorimetric unit for developing rapid ammonia-responsive indicators toward meat freshness monitoring.

Enhanced Removal of As(III) and Ciprofloxacin from Wastewater Using ZIF-67 Coupled with Fenton Reaction: Mechanisms and Techniques

Shuyan Zang,Wenxu Wang,Sitong Zong,Baoli Hu,Yingying Li,Shuai Wang,Jiandong Dong,Zhihao Fang

The efficient and effective removal of mixed pollutants from wastewater is of paramount importance for environmental remediation, given the diverse nature of contaminants present. In particular, arsenic (As) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) contamination in surface water has become increasingly severe. To address this challenge, this study synthesizes ZIF-67 and integrates it with the Fenton reaction to remove mixed As(III) and CIP pollutants from wastewater. Comprehensive characterization of ZIF-67 was conducted using FTIR, XRD, SEM, and BET analyses, as well as pHpzc measurements. As an efficient adsorbent, ZIF-67 offers a high surface area (1614 m²/g) and excels in removing pharmaceutical contaminants. A systematic investigation was conducted to evaluate the influence of key reaction parameters-including pH, H2O2/Fe2+ ratio, reaction temperature, adsorbent dosage, and reaction time-on pollutant removal efficiency, ultimately determining the optimal reaction conditions. The removal of As(III) and CIP follows a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and fits the Langmuir isotherm. Experimental results demonstrated that the maximum removal efficiencies for As(III) and CIP reached 98.07% and 99.96%, respectively, when ZIF-67 was coupled with the Fenton reaction. Mechanism studies indicate that during the coupling process, the Fenton reaction generates highly reactive hydroxyl radicals (•OH). These hydroxyl radicals (•OH) can oxidize trivalent arsenic and CIP into pentavalent arsenic and intermediate products, which are more easily adsorbed by ZIF-67, thereby enhancing the adsorption efficiency of ZIF-67 for pollutants. By leveraging the synergy of ZIF-67 and the Fenton reaction, this study proposes a promising strategy for enhanced As(III) and CIP removal, offering novel methods for wastewater treatment.

Cauliflower-like Sn-ZnO/ZIF-67 for highly sensitive and selective NH3 detection, and monitoring freshness of soy products

Weili Ye,Lihan Deng,Jin Li,Chu Chen

Accurate detection of ammonia (NH 3 ) is a key indicator for evaluating the deterioration of high-protein foods and is of great significance for food safety. In this study, we modified Sn-ZnO using a Co-based metal–organic framework (MOF) material (ZIF-67) to prepare cauliflower-shaped Sn-ZnO/ZIF-67 (SZZ67) for NH 3 sensors at room temperature (25 °C). By regulating Co 2+ , it was found that the sensor's response to NH 3 decreased with the increase in Co 2+ content, while the desorption ability was significantly enhanced. When the mass ratio of Sn-ZnO to the added C 4 H 6 CoO 4 ∙4H 2 O was 1:1, its response was 13.46 times that of Sn-ZnO, the response/recovery time was 63.78/7.99 s, and good moisture resistance was observed. Density functional theory (DFT) confirmed that SZZ67 can adsorb more NH 3 and release more conductive electrons, thereby increasing its response value. The sensors prepared using SZZ67 could more effectively monitor NH 3 , which is applicable for monitoring the freshness of soy products.
