It was found that mesoporous graphite carbon nitride (mpg-C 3 N 4 ) prepared using melamine as the precursor and ammonium chloride as the bubble template, has good photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation. In order to improve the photocatalytic performance of mpg-C 3 N 4 , it was combined with metal-organic framework ZIF-8. Taking tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) solution as a model pollutant, the photocatalytic activity of composites was studied to select the optimal composite ratio and pH value. The initial concentration of hydrogen peroxide and active oxidation species were also investigated. The results showed that when the loading of ZIF-8 was 40 wt%, the removal efficiency was the best and 74.8% of TC could be removed. The degradation efficiency of TC was negatively affected under extreme pH conditions, but the composite photocatalyst mpg-C 3 N 4 -ZIF-8 had a relatively higher degradation efficiency on TC at mild pH values (4–8). The removal efficiency was the best at pH 8, and 75.1% of TC could be removed; the adsorption capacity was 430.7 mg·g −1 and the photodegradation capacity was 548.6 mg·g −1 . The order of active species affecting the photocatalytic degradation of TC by mpg-C 3 N 4 -ZIF-8 was hole > superoxide radical > hydroxyl radical.

The integration of materials can generate synergistic effects, forming the core concept of a new generation of multifunctional applications. In particular, the integration of the ZnO structure with the zeolite imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) has been shown to enhance gas selectivity, which is mainly achieved through the molecular sieving effect of the specific-sized porous structure of ZIF-8. In this work, a room-temperature ammonia (NH3) gas sensor based on ZnO/ZIF-8 composites was fabricated via a combination of hydrothermal synthesis, templating, and drop-casting methods. By tuning the concentration of 2-methylimidazole, the ZIF-8 content was optimized, and the ZnO/ZIF-8–2 sensor exhibited robust NH3 sensing performance at room temperature. The sensor exhibited outstanding sensitivity toward NH3 (150.16@100 ppm), approximately 16 times that of pure ZnO sensor, with a rapid response/recovery time (14.5 s/1.6 s). Furthermore, the sensor showed remarkable selectivity, repeatability, and humidity resistance. This improvement is attributed to the increased content of oxygen vacancies and adsorbed oxygen species, high carrier density, the unique lychee-like morphology and large specific surface area, and the synergistic effect of the ZnO/ZIF-8 heterojunction. This study provides a promising strategy for the efficient detection of NH3 at room temperature using ZIF-8-based hybrid materials.

Background/Objectives: Jaw osteomyelitis (OM) is a refractory purulent inflammation caused by bacterial infection, characterized by persistent infection, excessive bone resorption, and resultant bone defects. Currently, mainstream therapies for jaw OM struggle to eradicate persistent infections, avoid antibiotic resistance, and repair infected bone defects, posing a critical challenge in clinical practice. Methods: Herein, the Fe3O4@ZIF-8 core–shell nanoparticles (NPs) platform designed for jaw OM treatment consisted of Fe3O4as the core and zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) as the shell. Results: The core–shell platform not only integrated the pH-responsive degradation capability of ZIF-8 but also retained the superparamagnetism of Fe3O4NPs. In the acidic, infectious microenvironment, Fe3O4@ZIF-8 NPs underwent continuous degradation, releasing Zn2+, thereby conferring potent antibacterial activity. The specific antibacterial mechanism of the nanoparticles lies in the fact that high concentrations of Zn2+directly disrupted bacterial cell membranes and inhibited the bacterial heat shock response. This dysregulates bacterial proteostasis, rendering the bacteria more sensitive to external adverse stresses, ultimately leading to bacterial death. With ZIF-8 framework degradation, the encapsulated Fe3O4NPs were released. Under static magnetic field (SMF) synergy, Fe3O4NPs collaborated with Zn2+to promote bone regeneration and repair infected bone defects in jaw OM lesions. Conclusions: As a multifunctional core–shell platform, Fe3O4@ZIF-8 NPs meet the dual clinical needs of antibiosis and osteogenesis, offering a promising translational strategy for jaw OM therapy.

Skin traumatic infections are prone to cause delayed healing or systemic infection. Conventional treatments are limited by antibiotic resistance, low bioavailability of natural drugs, and other factors, making the development of innovative antibacterial and pro-healing delivery systems of great significance. In this study, Rhein–Gastrodin ester (GR-NPs) was synthesized via the EDC/DMAP method, and a ZIF-8-loaded nanocomposite system (ZIF-8@GR-NPs) was prepared by the solvothermal method. Physicochemical characterization was completed, and in vitro and in vivo activity evaluations were simultaneously carried out. The results showed that the nanosystem exhibited a regular squarish-round morphology with a particle size of approximately 150 nm, good stability, and sustained drug release properties. In vitro, it displayed excellent antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities capable of inhibiting pathogenic bacterial proliferation and alleviating cellular inflammatory responses. In vivo, it possessed favorable biocompatibility and could significantly facilitate the healing of traumatized and infected wounds (the healing rate was 99.82% on the 10th day postsurgery, which was significantly higher than that of the control group). Histological analysis and transcriptome RNA sequencing analysis indicated that ZIF-8@GR-NPs could inhibit the release of pro-inflammatory factors, upregulate the expression of anti-inflammatory factors, promote angiogenesis, and collagen fiber remodeling, thereby creating a favorable microenvironment for wound healing. In conclusion, ZIF-8@GR-NPs integrate the triple functions of antibacterial activity, anti-inflammatory effect, and pro-angiogenesis, providing an innovative therapeutic strategy for the clinical treatment of complex bacterial-infected wounds.

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with the advantage of high surface area are attracting growing concern in photocatalysis , but the limitations of no visible light response and low carrier migration efficiency also exist in MOFs materials. Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) with unique optical properties are a novel class of carbon nanomaterials , which have attracted extensive attention in the field of photocatalysis . In this work, compositing with CQDs for realizing MOFs visible-light photocatalytic NO performance was elucidated. We synthesized CQDs/ZIF-8 composite via a simple surface soaking approach, and the 0.5-CQDs/ZIF-8 composite showed the best removal performance of NO, which was ∼43%. The effect of CQDs on boosting visible-light photocatalytic activity of ZIF-8 was explored based on the photocurrent test, electrochemical impedance spectra, activity tests and radical trapping experiment under different monochromatic light irradiation , up-conversion photoluminescence spectra of CQDs, and electron spin resonance spectroscopy measurement. These results demonstrated compositing with CQDs is an effective way to boost the visible-light photocatalytic activity of ZIF-8, in which CQDs improves the visible light utilization and carrier separation efficiency. Apart of that, the results fully proved that the up-conversion effect indeed played a role in driving ZIF-8 into visible light response owing to the still working holes (h + ) under 500 nm of monochromatic light irradiation. The possible NO x removal mechanism over CQDs/ZIF-8 composite was then proposed in the work.

Inspired by the bio-adhesive ability of the marine mussel, highly hydrogen permselective ZIF-8 membranes were prepared on polydopamine functionalized stainless-steel-nets (SSNs). With polydopamine functionalization of SSNs under mild conditions, the nucleation and growth of well-intergrown ZIF-8 membranes were promoted through the formation of strong non-covalent and covalent bonds, which was helpful to enhance the membrane’s separation selectivity while maintaining high permeance. For binary mixtures at 100 °C and 1 bar, the mixture separation factors of H2–CO2, H2–N2, H2–CH4 and H2–C3H8, were found to be 8.1, 15.0, 23.2 and 329.7, which by far exceed the corresponding Knudsen coefficients and those of the as-reported ZIF-8 membranes. The ZIF-8 membranes also displayed high permeances, with the H2 permeance higher than 2.1 × 10−5 mol m−2 s−1 Pa−1 due to the high void volume of the SSNs.

Zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) membranes are promising for hydrogen purification due to their molecular-sieving capability, yet fabricating compact and defect-free crystalline layer remains challenging by conventional heterogeneous nucleation. Herein, we propose an interfacial engineering strategy using a porous 2D Co-MOF nanosheet seed layer to enable secondary growth of high-performance ZIF-8 membranes. Ultrathin Co-MOF nanosheets (∼2 nm) with mesoporous structures were synthesized via a water-assisted solvothermal method, assembled into a uniform seed layer on α-Al 2 O 3 , and activated by 2-methylimidazole vapor to enhance intergrowth of ZIF-8 polycrystalline layer. The optimized membrane achieves a H 2 permeance up to 6.0 × 10 −7 mol m −2 s −1 ·Pa −1 (∼1800 GPU) with an ideal H 2 /CO 2 selectivity of 13.38, surpassing the 2008 Robeson upper bound. Crucially, it maintains stable separation performance for an equimolar H 2 /CO 2 mixture over 100 h, with no detectable decay in permeance or selectivity. This work offers a scalable route to robust MOF membranes for industrial hydrogen recovery.

In this study, the morphology of ZnO was altered from nanofibers to hollow nanotubes by Ce doping, mainly owing to the Kirkendall effect originating from different diffusion rates of constituent elements. A novel one-dimensional core-shell nanotube (ZnO-CeO 2 @ZIF-8) was successfully fabricated, characterized by a distinctive structure comprising a ZIF-8 shell and a ZnO-CeO 2 nanotube core. The as-prepared ZnO-CeO 2 @ZIF-8 exhibited a large specific surface area, substantial pore volume, and strong affinity towards CO 2 . These ZnO-CeO 2 @ZIF-8 were integrated into Pebax-1657 to construct MMMs for high-efficiency CO 2 transport and separation. Furthermore, the unique 1D hollow structure of the filler effectively reduced the resistance to mass transfer and enhanced gas permeability, while the ZIF-8 shell and Ce-induced oxygen vacancies synergistically enhanced the CO 2 adsorption and selectivity. The Pebax/ZnO-CeO 2 @ZIF-8 MMMs containing 3 wt% loading demonstrate superior performance, characterized by a CO 2 permeability of 94.0 Barrer and CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 64.8 respectively. Compared to the unmodified Pebax, these values exhibit enhancements of 73.4% and 36.7%, suggesting that ZnO-CeO 2 @ZIF-8 holds considerable promise in the realm of MMMs for adsorption and separation of CO 2 .

Carbonic anhydrase (CA) is an enzyme with unparallele d catalytic activity in CO2 hydration. However, its high cost and low stability seriously restrict its industrial application in CO2 absorption. Constructing CA mimics is a promising strategy to overcome the above limitations. However, to date, a majority of mimics reported are suffering from laborious synthetic processes, harsh synthetic conditions, and costly ligand materials. Therefore, developing novel CA mimics with higher applicability remains a high priority. Due to the structural similarity between zeolite imidazolate framework (ZIF)-8 and natural carbonic anhydrase (CA), ZIF-8 may be considered as a potential CA-mimetic catalyst for CO2 absorption. To validate this assumption, ZIF-8 and hydrophilic ZIF-8-TA were synthesized and the results from subsequent CO2 absorption experiments indicated that the synthesized catalysts could significantly enhance CO2 absorption in water and common alkaline solutions. The addition of 1.0 wt % ZIF-8 in water and different alkaline solutions respectively increased the average CO2 absorption rate by 42.35 and 6.78–24.51%, while the addition of 1.0 wt % of ZIF-8-TA increased the CO2 absorption rate by 81.80 and 18.16–34.39%, respectively. Besides, both catalysts possessed excellent reusability that they retained high performance even after five cycles of absorption and regeneration. Through esterase experiments, it was confirmed that ZIF-8 and ZIF-8-TA exhibited higher CA-mimetic activity than many reported CA mimics. Through density functional theory (DFT) calculations, it was indicated that the catalytic CO2 hydration pathway of ZIF-8 primarily involves four steps, including nucleophilic attack, rearrangement, replacement, and deprotonation, which is similar to that of natural CA, while ZIF-8-TA does not undergo the rearrangement step. Moreover, the electron-donation effect and van der Waals interaction of tannic acid endow ZIF-8-TA with higher catalytic activity.

Zeolite imidazole framework-8 (ZIF-8), serving as a promising adsorbent for wastewater treatment, is limited in practical wastewater treatment due to its polycrystalline powder form resulting in poor recoverability. Herein, the millimeter-scale ZIF-8@porous mullite beads were prepared by the seeded-secondary growth method. The surface of the porous mullite beads is fully encapsulated by nanoscale ZIF-8 crystals, and the ZIF-8 crystals are anchored by mullite whiskers. This composition provides ZIF-8 with a stable macroscopic structure and maintains the exposure of its adsorption sites. Therefore, the ZIF-8@porous mullite beads exhibited good adsorption performance toward methyl orange (MO) and orange G (OG) in the aqueous solution. The analysis of adsorption kinetics indicating the adsorption efficiency of ZIF-8@mullite-w on MO and OG is influenced by the concentration of adsorbates and the adsorption sites. The maximum adsorption of ZIF-8@porous mullite beads on MO and OG was 16.5289 and 5.111 mg/g, respectively.

Carbon molecular sieve (CMS) membranes are widely used for the separation of similar molecular kinetic diameter gas. However, their performance is limited by a large amount of discontinuous porous structures and a few adsorption affinity sites. Herein, we first prepared magnetic Co@NC@ZIF-8 nanoparticles , followed by introducing it into the polyimides matrix to design precursor membrane with vertical nanochain-like particle distribution by magnetic field induction. Afterwards, hybrid carbon molecular sieve (HCMS) membranes were prepared by pyrolyzing precursor with high-temperature under N 2 atmosphere, which had ordered microporous architecture and Co-N-C structure. Resultant HCMS membranes prepared by magnetic field induction had excellent gas separation performance, whose CO 2 , N 2 and CH 4 permeabilities were 27,050, 2614 and 622 Barrer, with CO 2 /N 2 , CO 2 /CH 4 and N 2 /CH 4 selectivities of 10.4, 43.5 and 4.2 respectively. These values far exceeded 2019 CO 2 /CH 4 and 2008 N 2 /CH 4 upper bounds as well as approached 2008 CO 2 /N 2 upper bound. The superior performance resulted from the vertically ordered nanochain-like channels for gas transport, which dramatically shortens the transport path of gas molecules to intensify shape sieving potential. Moreover, the Co-N-C structure on the wall of channels could facilitate CO 2 transport due to the π complexation. Additionally, a large quantity of nitrogen sites in the carbonized Co@NC@ZIF-8 enhance CO 2 adsorption selectivity owing to the acid-base interaction. More remarkably, after 30-day aging testing, it was found that HCMS membranes prepared by magnetic field induction had exceptional aging resistance compared to the pristine CMS membranes and one without magnetic field induction under the same aging environments.

Zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) membranes have great potential applications in nanofiltration. However, preparing continuous and intact ZIF membranes on the surface of a substrate remains challenging. In this study, we assembled ZIF-8 nanoparticles in situ in the pores of a porous alumina substrate via a freezing-assisted counter-diffusion method. Although a continuous ZIF-8 membrane was not formed on the surface of the substrate, the obtained nano-confined composite membrane was dense enough to separate antibiotics and salt. The rejection rate of tetracycline was above 99 %, while that of sodium chloride was below 20 %, demonstrating good antibiotic desalination performance. The permeance of the ZIF-8 membrane reached 23.5 LMH/bar. Due to the nano-confined structure, the obtained ZIF-8 composite membrane was robust. Besides, polishing the surface layer did not reduce the separation performance. Moreover, sulfurizing the ZIF-8 membrane improved its stability in water. It also improved the permeance to 31.3 LMH/bar, which remained stable for 100 h. Therefore, the obtained robust ZIF-8 membrane and its derivative composite membrane fabricated via freezing-assisted counter-diffusion have great potential in antibiotic desalination.
