Cellulose derivative hybrid porous polydivinylbenzene microspheres for chiral chromatography separation

Yang Yang,Bi Yujie,Zhao Yang,Cai Changyu,Liang Xinmiao,Ke Yanxiong

In this work, a modified suspension polymerization method was developed to synthesize cellulose derivative hybrid polydivinylbenzene (PDVB) microspheres with particle sizes of 7–12 μm. Cellulose tris(4-methylbenzoate) (CTMB) and cellulose tris(3,5-dimethylphenylcarbamate) (CDMPC) hybrid PDVB were incorporated and well distributed in the microspheres. The chiral recognition ability of the chiral stationary phases (CSP) was evaluated by chiral high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) separation of 38 enantiomers with widely varied chemical structures. The influence of pore size and the loading of chiral selectors were investigated. The chiral recognition ability of the columns is comparable to that of the CHIRALCEL ® OD column and CHIRALCEL ® OJ column. For some enantiomers, the chiral selectivity of the prepared columns is even better than CHIRALPAK ® IB column and CHIRALPAK ® IJ column. In addition, the columns showed excellent stability in the basic mobile phase and organic solvents such as tetrahydrofuran (THF) and ethyl acetate (EA). This work enabled the synthesized polysaccharide-based CSPs with good chiral recognition ability and high stability.

Cellulose self-erasing material with dual functions in information encryption

Hui Liu,Yi Lu,Bitao Peng,Jingxian Wei,Hongli Dai,Lei Wang,Hongxiang Zhu,Hui He

Materials capable of multiple encryption, color-changing visualizations, and time-dependent functionalities are ideal for efficient and secure information storage and transmission. In this study, a time-dependent self-erasing material (TDSEM) containing urease developed through the in-situ synthesis of gold nanoclusters on the surface of cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) chemically bonding fluorescein isothiocyanate. CNC not only played an important role as a long-term stabilizer for the material, but also acted as a bridge facilitating the assembly of organic and inorganic interfaces, enabling the integrated system to achieve multi-color regulation and fluorescence resonance energy transfer. The TDSEM demonstrated excellent pH responsiveness, cyclic stability, and durability. The information was encoded by directly introducing HCl/urea into the TDSEM, and automatically erased over time. Additionally, the fluorescence intensity and color (transitioning from red to orange to green) were modulated over a time scale by adjusting the urea concentration, thus precisely controlling the time to retrieve the correct information (22 min). The confidentiality of the encoded information was enhanced by dual “locking” of time and color, ensuring that decryption only occurred “time color key”. This time-dependent and color-varying dual functions provide valuable insights for the development of advanced information encryption and anti-counterfeiting technologies.

Cellulose Reinforced Eutectogel Electrolyte for Flexible Zinc-Ion Hybrid Supercapacitors

Jiaming Zeng,Wang Yang,Wu Yang,Zhiyuan Zheng,Jianyun Gan,Qi Wang,Liubing Dong,Linxin Zhong,Ruidong Xia,Emmanuel Iheanyichukwu Iwuoha,Usisipho Feleni,Shimelis Admassie,Xinwen Peng

The eutectogel electrolyte has shown significant potential for zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors (ZHSCs) due to its cost-effectiveness, temperature resistance, and high safety. However, the poor mechanical strength and complex preparation process of the eutectogel electrolyte have become the main barriers to the practical application of ZHSCs. Herein, we developed a cellulose reinforced polyacrylamide (PAM)-based eutectogel (CPG) electrolyte for ZHSCs via an in situ one-step radical polymerization process. The dispersed cellulosic fiber plays a crucial role in stabilizing the network structure and widening the pore size of eutectogel, which improves mechanical properties and ion transport rate. Furthermore, the ternary deep eutectic solvent including choline chloride, urea, ethylene glycol, and ZnCl2 endows eutectogel with intrinsic thermal stability, antidrying (with weight remaining almost unchanged after 20 days), and antifreezing properties. Thus, the as-prepared eutectogel electrolyte exhibits decent mechanical properties (tensile strength of 35.3 kPa and compressive strength of 117.0 kPa), high zinc ion transference number (0.68), superb flexibility, and good adhesion. With these superiorities, the symmetric cell employing the CPG electrolyte achieves stable cycling over 1390 h, and the assembled flexible ZHSC demonstrates favorable mechanical deformation adaptability under various severe conditions and operational feasibility in a wide temperature range from −15 to 60 °C. This work offers a promising strategy for designing multifunctional eutectogel electrolytes for applications in flexible ZHSCs.

Dissolution performance of cellulose in MIM plus tetrabutylammonium propionate solvent

Ai-Rong Xu,Shuan Wen,Lin Chen

Novel cellulose solvents, MIM-[N 4444 ][CH 3 CH 2 COO], were developed by coupling N -methylimidazole (MIM) with tetrabutyl ammonium propionate ([N 4444 ][CH 3 CH 2 COO]). The solubilities of cellulose in MIM-[N 4444 ][CH 3 CH 2 COO] solvents were determined at 25   °C. The effect of MIM content on cellulose solubility and the possible dissolution mechanism of cellulose in MIM-[N 4444 ][CH 3 CH 2 COO] solvent have been investigated. It was found that [CH 3 CH 2 COO] − anion in MIM-[N 4444 ][CH 3 CH 2 COO] solvent is the main driving force of the cellulose dissolution by interacting with the hydroxyl hydrogen atom in cellulose, and the role of MIM is mainly to disassociate/dilute [N 4444 ][CH 3 CH 2 COO]. In addition, the morphology and structure of the regenerated cellulose materials from MIM-[N 4444 ][CH 3 CH 2 COO] solvent were characterized by scanning electron micrograph (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD).

Functional thermoelectric composite endows cellulose paper with superior fire safety

Xie Li,Shansu Li,Yuzhao Yang,Jiajun Li,Peng Lu,Yuan Liu,Qi Wang

Due to intrinsic defect of fire hazard security, improving the flame retardant capacity of paper is still insufficient in case of precombustion. Herein, we integrate the flame retardant with flame detection performance on the surface of paper, the restricts of graphene oxide (GO) are overcome between high thermoelectric performance and flexibility. A flexible lamellar thermoelectric composite (GO-LA-HP) is constructed through the co-assembly of GO, ascorbic acid (LA), and phenoxycycloposphazene (HP), lamellar GO-LA-HP avoid GO's toughness decline after modification, but also enhance fire sensitivity and flame resistance. The composite could significantly decrease the temperature rise stage (<150 °C), and trigger the fire-warning within 2 s. The hybrid coating composed of phytic acid/phosphoric acid (PyA/PA) and modified thermoelectric GO-LA-HP becomes excellent compatibility on the surface of the modified paper (GPP). GPP is able to extinguish itself immediately after leaving the fire in the vertical combustion, and display the excellent flame resistance. Furthermore, GPP's alarm signal could be timely generated as little as 3 s of contacting the flame, and the response time can exceed 600 s. According to the structure observation and analysis, the related synergistic fire detection reinforcing and flame-retardant mechanisms are also proposed and clarified.

Insights into the dissolution of cellulose in lithium bromide solution

Zhiqiang Pang,Ning Li,Cuihua Dong,Hairui Ji,Yang Liao,Guihua Yang,Xuejun Pan

Lithium bromide molten salt hydrate (∼62 wt% aqueous solution of LiBr) can dissolve cellulose, but the cellulose dissolution mechanisms are not fully understood. This study revisited cellulose dissolution in the LiBr solution and aimed to provide new insights into the dissolution mechanisms. The collected evidence suggested that cellulose dissolution in the LiBr solution is primarily attributed to the disruption of intermolecular H-bonds of cellulose by the ion-dipole coordination between hydrated Li + and cellulose hydroxy. The coordination between Li + and cellulose was verified by 7 Li NMR and simultaneous DSC-TGA analysis. The observations in this study also suggest that polarizable, large-size, and low-electronegativity Br – plays a synergetic and supplementary role in the dissolution of cellulose. In addition, the dissolution of cellulose in the LiBr solution is greatly dependent on dissolution conditions (LiBr concentration, temperature, pH, and cellulose loading) and cellulose properties (particle size and degree of polymerization).

Negative Poisson’s ratio structural cellulose aerogel with excellent impact resistance

Shuaiqi Wang,Yihan Zeng,Chen Wang,Sijia Sun,Changtong Mei,Mingzhu Pan

Cellulose aerogel is a promising cushioning material for impact-resistant applications owing to its low density and high porosity. However, the weakness of mechanical strength and stress dispersion effects resulted in local damage and failure of aerogels. Herein, we constructed significantly negative Poisson’s ratio effect of nanocellulose aerogels by covalently cross-linking cellulose nanofibers (CNF) and polyacrylamide (PAM), and introducing concave hexagonal structure. The nanocellulose aerogels with concave hexagonal exhibited an anisotropic negative Poisson’s ratio (maximum negative Poisson’s ratio of −0.203), providing high energy-absorbing efficiency and large deformation buffer space. During compression, the crosslinked networks formed within the CNF/PAM cellular walls act as strain transfer channels, further improving the strain conductivity and the mechanical strength of the nanocellulose aerogels. The negative Poisson’s ratio structure and dense cellular walls provided the aerogel excellent stress dispersion and energy-absorbing effects at 30% strain, and excellent impact-resistant properties under the strong impact of a steel ball. This work provides an attractive strategy to construct aerogels with eco-friendly, lightweight, higher strength, and negative Poisson’s ratio structure and extend the applications in the field of impact energy-absorbing and cushioning, i.e., aeronautics, high speed vehicle, and packaging machinery.

Oil/water separation with hydrophobic/oleophilic silica-shelled cellulose aerogels

Yue Sun,Chengxi Deng,Hua Dong

In this work, hydrophobic/oleophilic cellulose/SiO 2 aerogels are prepared by coating cellulose aerogels which are prepared from freeze-drying aqueous cellulose solutions with a layer of silica shell and then hydrophobizing the surface by reacting with vaporized methyltrimethoxylsilane. With the cellulose content in the aqueous solution increases from 0.5% to 1.25%, the density of the cellulose/SiO 2 aerogel increases from 28.92 mg/cm 3 to 34.83 mg/cm 3 , and the porosity decreases from 90.2% to 84.48%. The structure and composition of cellulose/SiO 2 aerogel are analyzed with SEM, FT-IR, XPS , and TGA . The surface wettability investigation indicates that the prepared cellulose/SiO 2 aerogels have excellent hydrophobicity and oleophilicity, with a water contact angle up to 143° and an oil contact angle down to 0°. The results of oil absorption experiments show that the absorption capacity of the aerogels for oils and organic solvents is 16∼40 times their own mass. In addition, as the aerogels are hydrophobic/oleophilic, they demonstrate good oil-selective absorption performance in oil/water mixture. Moreover, experimental results in oil absorption under high temperature conditions and acidic/basic conditions indicate that the aerogels have exceptional resilience towards arduous conditions. These advantages render them a viable option for remediation of water pollution resulted from oil contamination.

N/P co-doped cellulose carbon aerogel with enhanced supercapacitance

Xu Wang,Quan Gao,Yongfa Zhou,Zhihan Wang

Sustainable cellulose has attracted considerable attention in the field of renewable supercapacitor owing to its low-cost and lightweight properties. However, it is still a challenge to enhance their electrochemical performance. Here, nitrogen (N) and phosphorous (P) co-doped carbon aerogels derived from cellulose were synthesized via the sol-gel-lyophilization-carbonization method. Their structures were determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), nitrogen sorption isotherm, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The N/P co-doped carbon aerogel exhibited significantly enhanced porous surface properties, and the increasing contents of the N and P could provide more defects and active sites. Therefore, the sample achieved a high specific capacitance of 235.5 F g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 , while also demonstrating good retention of specific capacitance with 62.6 % of initial capacitance at 20 A g −1 . The electrode exhibited 87 % capacitance retention and an excellent coulombic efficiency of close to 100 % after undergoing 10,000 cycles at a current density of 6 A g −1 . Overall, the synthesized cellulose carbon aerogels, modified through doping engineering, have been identified as a promising candidate for supercapacitor electrodes.

MXene/Cellulose Hydrogel Composites: Preparation and Adsorption Properties of Pb2+

Qiang Yang,Jia Zhang,Hairong Yin,Junkang Guo,Shenghua Lv,Yaofeng Li

In this work, acrylic cellulose hydrogel, a typical natural polymer adsorbent, was modified using MXene through in situ polymerization to create a synthetic inorganic–polymer composite known as MXene/cellulose hydrogel. FTIR, XRD, SEM, and thermogravimetric analyses were applied to characterize the chemical structure and micromorphology. The MXene/cellulose hydrogel was utilized for the removal of Pb2+from wastewater. Under optimal experimental conditions (initial Pb2+concentration of 0.04 mol/L, adsorption time of 150 min, pH = 5.5, and MXene doping content of 50% at 30 °C), a maximum adsorption capacity of 410.57 mg/g was achieved. The MXene/cellulose hydrogel corresponded with the pseudo-second-order kinetic equation model and exhibited a better fit with the Freundlich isotherm model.

Carbon nanotube-modified oxidized regenerated cellulose gauzes for hemostatic applications

Feng Cheng,Changyu Liu,Hongbin Li,Xinjing Wei,Tingsheng Yan,Yunfeng Wang,Yunjia Song,Jinmei He,Yudong Huang

Functionalized carbon nanotubes have recently received interest because of their unique properties, especially in the biomedical field. In this research, unmodified multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), and functionalized carbon nanotubes with amino groups (MWCNTs-NH 2 ) and carboxyl groups (MWCNTs-COOH) were grafted to oxidized regenerated cellulose (ORC) gauze to fabricate novel functionalized ORC, and the performance of the functionalized gauze was investigated. The functionalized ORC was characterized by FT-IR, XPS and SEM, which showed the different kinds of CNTs grafted on its surface. The XPS results demonstrated the successful incorporation of functionalized MWCNTs in the active layer of modified ORC gauze. Meanwhile, the specific surface area of the CNTs modified functionalized ORC gauze was improved in varying degrees, whereas the porosity was slightly decreased. Furthermore, hydrophilicity experiment results presented a significant increment in water uptake of the functionalized CNTs grafted to the surface of the ORC gauze. Results of the hemostatic performance test on rabbit ear artery and liver showed that compared with the original ORC gauze, the bleeding time was significantly reduced when using the functionalized CNTs modified ORC hemostatic gauze. Moreover, the results also showed that the MWCNTs-COOH/ORC functionalized gauze had outstanding hemostatic efficiency.
