Hydrogel-based wearable electronics hold great promise for physiological monitoring, yet their application in privacy-sensitive regions remains constrained by the simultaneous demands of ultrathin form factors, mechanical robustness, multimodal sensing, and long-term stability. Inspired by dragonfly wings, this study develops a gelatin hydrogel e-skin reinforced with polyurethane (PU) microfibers, featuring ultra-thinness (7.15 µm), high strength (55.62 MJ m −3 ), and high sensitivity (GF = 2.52, TCR = 3.5%°C −1 ). Its controlled binary heterogeneous structure ensures asymmetric adhesion and long-term skin conformability. A deep eutectic solvents (DES)-induced ion-electron dual-conducting system enhances conductivity by 13 times while improving flexibility, thereby boosting sensing performance. This sensor boasts biocompatibility, antibacterial properties, transparency, freeze resistance and recyclability. It enables high-precision continuous monitoring and achieves multimodal signal decoupling via finite element design. Integrated with flexible circuits and wireless modules, it supports non-invasive at-home tracking of privacy signals during pregnancy and erectile function. This work offers an intelligent solution for high-precision monitoring in precision and personalized healthcare.

Under Minamata Convention restrictions, mercury-free UV source was in need for ultraviolet disinfection in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). Ultraviolet emitting diodes (UV-LEDs) seemed a potential mercury-free UV source and had gained increasing attention in water disinfection. In this study, a mercury-free UVA-LED and low concentration peroxymonosulfate (PMS) combination was proposed for E. coli (CGMCC 1.3373) inactivation and real RAS wastewater disinfection. Results showed that UVA-LED and low concentration PMS combination enhanced E. coli inactivation over UVA-LED alone. A synergistic effect on E. coli inactivation with synergy factor of 58.7 % was found when combining UVA-LED irradiation with 1 mg/L PMS. Kinetic rate constant increased by up to 139 % by UVA-LED and 1 mg/L PMS combination, which implied the required UV fluence to 2-log E. coli inactivation was saved up to 42 %. Also, UVA-LED and 1 mg/L PMS combination showed disinfection potential for real RAS wastewater treatment. Mechanism study revealed that the Cl − , · OH and SO 4 ·- played important roles and · OH was dominant radical in saline solution by UVA-LED/PMS process compared to that in phosphate buffered solution(PBS). The E. coli inactivation was caused by UVA-LED irradiation and reactive species generated in UVA-LED/PMS system. Our study provided a potential strategy to introduce the mercury-free UV-LED into RAS and a better understanding of UVA-LED/PMS disinfection process.

Patients with lower urinary tract dysfunction are often unable to sense urine volume. Implantable sensors are used to monitor bladder urine volume. Securing sensors to the bladder involves sutures or synthetic adhesives that are invasive to it. Inspired by the safety harness that can be attached to objects by straps, we propose the bladder electronic harness (E-harness) for urine volume monitoring. The E-harness is a non-stick 2-dimensional structure that can be wrapped around the bladder without harming it. It is also soft enough to put no extra pressure on the bladder when it expands. Integrated with soft strain sensors and a wireless system, the E-harness can conform to the bladder, can measure bladder liquid volume with high accuracy (∼0.16 mL), and does not fall off for 1 month. The size of the E-harness is easily adjustable and can be used on small animals such as mice and large animals such as pigs.

A novel piezocatalytic active membrane based on mixed matrix of exfoliated multi-flaw MoS 2 (E-MoS 2 ) nanosheets and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) was synthesized by electrospinning technique. The composition and structure of the obtained E-MoS 2 /PVDF electrospun fiber membranes (EFMs) were characterized via FESEM, HR-TEM, XRD, FTIR and XPS techniques. The piezocatalytic activity of the EFMs was evaluated by the degradation of antibiotic oxytetracycline (OTC) under ultrasonic irradiation in the dark. The 10.0 wt% E-MoS 2 /PVDF EFMs exhibited superior OTC degradation efficiency of 93.08% within 24 min with pseudo-first-order kinetic constant ( k ) of 0.09124 min −1 , which was 21.1 times higher than that of the pure PVDF EFMs. The superior performance was attributed to the synergetic effect of the embedded E-MoS 2 nanosheets and a high proportion of PVDF β -phase (94.1%) to effectively improve the piezoelectric property of composite. In addition, the ultrathin multi-flaw structure of E-MoS 2 provided abundant catalytic active edge sites and increased the surface charge density, promoting the generation of more ∙OH and ∙O 2 – radicals to degrade OTC pollutants. The degradation intermediates of OTC over 10 wt% E-MoS 2 /PVDF EFMs were detected by HPLC–MS and two main degradation pathways were reasonably proposed. The piezocatalytic activity of 10 wt% E-MoS 2 /PVDF EFMs remained stable after five consecutive cycles. This study is meaningful for exploring the composite membrane piezocatalysts for largescale applications in wastewater treatment.

Tetra-aminophenyl porphyrin (TAPP)-grafted Zn–Ag–In–S quantum dots (ZAIS QDs)/poly(maleic anhydride- alt -1-octadecene) (PMAO) nanoparticles were synthesized and their photoluminescence properties as well as photodynamic properties were studied. ZAIS QDs showed the brightest photoluminescence and highest quantum yield at an optimized Zn feeding molar ratio of 20%. Those TAPP-grafted nanoparticles (i.e., ZAIS/PMAO- g -TAPP) were able to produce 1 O 2 in aqueous solution under light irradiation as indicated by the 1 O 2 indicator, 9,10-anthracenediyl-bis(methylene) dimalonic acid (ADMA). ZAIS/PMAO- g -TAPP nanoparticles also demonstrate good biocompatibility and low dark toxicity even at a concentration as high as 2.8 mg·mL −1 , whith can be applied as both a fluorescence probe and a photodynamic therapy (PDT) agent. The PDT treatment showed that the viability of melanoma A2058 cells was less than 10% after treatment with the 420 nm light irradiation for 15 min at a photosensitizer concentration of 1.7 mg·mL −1 . During the PDT treatment with Escherichia coli , the survival rate of the bacteria decreased by −95% after light irradiation at the same concentration. Such dual-functional ZAIS/PMAO- g -TAPP nanoparticles researched in this study demonstrate promising potential for fluorescence labeling as well as effective PDT treatment against cancer cells and bacteria.

Prolonging shelf life of fresh-cut water chestnuts (FCWC) by vitamin E (vit E) was investigated. Browning degree, decay degree, and edible quality (EQ) of FCWC were evaluated as evaluation indexes of shelf life. Meanwhile, total soluble solids concentration, titratable acid (TA) concentration, ascorbic acid (AA) concentration, hardness, ethylene concentration, polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity, peroxidase (POD) activity, total phenols (TP) concentration, counts of thermophilic bacteria, yeasts, and molds colonies were analyzed. Shelf life of FCWC could be prolonged for 4 days by soaking them in 0.04% (v v −1 ) vit E anhydrous ethanol (1% [v v −1 ]) solution for 30 min. Vit E probably inhibited the increasing of PPO and POD activities, and the declining of TP concentration and hardness. Vit E had little effect on counts of thermophilic bacteria, yeasts, and molds colonies of FCWC. These results indicated that vit E could prolong shelf life of FCWC. Novelty impact statement Vitamin E (vit E) extents shelf life of fresh-cut water chestnuts for 4 days. Vit E inhibits browning by reacting with oxygen or by reducing polyphenol oxidase and peroxidase activities. Vit E has no effect on total soluble solids, titratable acid, ascorbic acid, and ethylene concentration.

Flexible tactile-sensing devices are crucial for enhancing precision in wearable interaction electronics. However, traditional array-based sensing units encounter challenges in high environment robustness and spatial resolution. To address this limitation, we propose an array-free tactile-sensing E-textile that attains superior spatial resolution by exploiting non-faradaic junction effect between the E-textile and the human body. Upon finger contact, ions in the dermis redistribute directionally at the interface, creating a purely capacitive coupled nonfaradaic junction behavior that rapidly generates tactile-sensing signals (<40 ms). These signals demonstrate continuous, linearly graded, and complementary characteristics that enable accurate touch coordinate localization, allowing the E-textile to trace tactile trajectories (e.g., handwriting) at superior resolution without auxiliary integrated circuitry. Notably, the E-textile exhibits excellent robust performance under harsh conditions like extreme temperature (−30–80 °C, with error <0.0017%), mechanical damage, and cyclic washing (>50,000 cycle). Interestingly, this sensing approach can be extended to various mediums such as paper, wood, and water, showcasing its versatility for interactive applications. With its high spatial resolution, durability, and multimodal compatibility, the proposed E-textile offers a promising platform for next-generation human–machine interfaces.

Proposes a functional modularization strategy to fabricate BZCY-GDC-LCO electrodes. • Exhibits low polarization resistance (0.141 Ω·cm 2 ) with 216 h stable operation. • Single cell delivers 0.757 W·cm −2 (FC) and 1.182 A·cm −2 at 1.3 V (EC) at 650 °C. Efficient triple-conduction (H + /O 2− /e − ) is vital for high-performance reversible protonic ceramic cells (R-PCCs), yet the underlying transport mechanisms and their specific impacts on electrode kinetics remain elusive. In this work, we employ a “functional modularization” strategy to engineer a BaZr 0.1 Ce 0.7 Y 0.2 O 3−δ -Gd 0.1 Ce 0.9 O 1.95 -LaCoO 3 (BZCY-GDC-LCO) triple-phase composite air electrode using commercially available precursors. The synergistic effects and individual roles of the conducting species in optimizing electrochemical kinetics were systematically investigated. The optimized BZCY-GDC-LCO electrode (1:1:1 mass ratio) exhibits excellent chemical compatibility, high oxygen vacancy concentration, and a well-distributed triple-phase boundary. Consequently, it achieves a low polarization resistance of 0.141 Ω·cm 2 at 650 °C and demonstrates robust long-term stability over 216 h of operation. Single-cell tests deliver a peak power density of 0.757 W·cm −2 in fuel cell mode and a current density of 1.182 A·cm −2 at 1.3 V in electrolysis mode at 650 °C. Kinetic analysis reveals oxygen adsorption/dissociation as the rate-determining step, while excessive steam partial pressure inhibits oxygen transport via surface site passivation. This work provides a scalable design strategy for high-performance R-PCC air electrodes, demonstrating that superior performance and favorable techno-economic feasibility can be achieved using conventional materials. Gold recovery from waste remains challenging due to the lack of materials that can simultaneously coordinate, reduce and stabilize Au species. Herein, we report a hierarchical redox-engineered copper(II) benzenehexathiol metal-organic framework (BHT MOF) featuring six thiolate coordination sites, uniformly grown on a three-dimensional carbon nanotube sponge (BHT MOF@CNT sponge), for the selective recovery of waste gold ions and their direct conversion into catalytically active gold nanoparticles (Au NPs). The hybrid material exhibits high gold adsorption capacity of 647.9 mg g −1 at pH 1.0 and 50 °C, coupled with outstanding selectivity, showing only a 5–10% decrease in Au uptake in the presence of 11 competing metal ions and achieving a total gold recovery efficiency exceeding 90% in both binary and multicomponent systems. The conformal growth of the BHT MOF on the conductive CNT sponge generates a hierarchical porous architecture with sulfur-rich active sites that provide strong Au-S coordination and thermodynamically favorable binding. Simultaneously, the redox-active thiolate ligands facilitate spontaneous in situ electron transfer, driving the reduction of Au(III) to metallic Au(0) and enabling the formation of uniformly dispersed Au NPs confined onto the hybrid matrix, without the need for external reducing agents or post-synthetic treatments. The resulting Au-BHT MOF@CNT catalyst exhibits an enhanced hydrogen generation rate and excellent cycling stability, benefiting from the synergistic interplay between thiolate-based redox engineering, strong metal-support interactions and accelerated electron transport through the CNT network. This work demonstrates a scalable waste-to-energy platform that integrates waste gold recovery and hydrogen production within a single multifunctional material, providing a sustainable strategy for precious metal recycling and clean energy generation.

Making multiple heterojunction of photocatalysts is an effect approach to achieve high effective utilization of solar resource. A novel ternary AgI/BiOI/pg-C 3 N 4 nanocomposite was synthesized with a unique n-p-n heterojunction. In this work, an in-situ transformation method was used to fabricate AgI/BiOI/pg-C 3 N 4 heterostructure with different AgI/BiOI ratios. The photocatalytic activity of the AgI/BiOI/pg-C 3 N 4 was detected by the degradation of methylene orange (MO) and tetracycline (TC). The AgI/BiOI/pg-C 3 N 4 composites exhibited better photocatalytic activity than pg-C 3 N 4 and BiOI/pg-C 3 N 4 composite. The performance of photocatalytic antibacterial inactivation of E. coli indicated that the AgI/BiOI/pg-C 3 N 4 heterostructure is an ideal material for antibacterial applications. The ESR and trapping experiments confirmed that the degradation of organic pollution is completed through the co-operation of •O 2 − , •OH and h + . A possible mechanism of the degradation process is proposed.

Microalgae are a sustainable and nutrient-dense food source, but their strong off-flavors significantly limit broader consumption. This study evaluates the effectiveness of a laccase-catechin mediator in improving the odor profiles of Spirulina, Chlorella, and Chlamydomonas reinhardtii . Mediators were applied ex situ (pre-formed) or in situ (generated within the suspension). Ex-situ mediators, optimized at 40 °C for 2 h, achieved better deodorization compared to in-situ mediators, with optimal catechin dosages of 28, 16, and 8 mg/g biomass for Spirulina, Chlorella, and C. reinhardtii , respectively. Sensory evaluation showed reduced grassy, earthy, and fatty odors, and enhanced floral and fruity notes, with the ex-situ approach leading to higher overall acceptability. GC–MS analysis confirmed that mediators decreased the diversity and abundance of key odor-active volatiles in three microalgae species. Laccase-catalyzed quinone-type mediators effectively neutralize undesirable compounds, offering a promising enzymatic strategy for improving the sensory quality of microalgae-based foods, especially for sustainable food applications.

Liquid crystal monomers (LCMs) have been proposed as a class of emerging organic pollutants , which were recently detected in indoor dust and sediment samples collected near electronic devices recycling facilities. However, there is a knowledge gap for analytical method, occurrence, and distribution of LCMs in aqueous sample. Herein, a robust method was developed to determine 38 target LCMs in landfill leachate . A combined ultrasonic enhanced liquid-liquid extraction, saponification and silica/florisil packed column purification method achieved recoveries of 76.9~127.1%, 84.5~114.6% and 81.3~104.6% at spiking levels of 2 ng, 10 ng and 50 ng in leachate, respectively. The developed method was validated through determination of target LCMs in leachate samples collected from municipal landfills in Hong Kong (HK) and Shenzhen (SZ), China. There were 23 and 20 LCMs detected in the HK (ΣLCMs=1120 ng/L) and SZ (ΣLCMs=409 ng/L) sample, respectively, with 6 LCMs newly detected in the environment. This study provided the first evidence suggesting that landfill leachate might be a potential sink of LCMs emitted from e-waste. Future study is urged to investigate the potential migration of LCMs from landfill leachate as a point source, and their occurrence, distribution, fate, and ecotoxicological risk in aquatic environments on regional and global scales.
