Photoreversible color-switching materials, which can reversibly change color in response to external light stimuli, have attracted increasing attention for their applications in time-sensitive information storage and optical data storage fields. But most of the related materials are dyes or redox compounds with ultraviolet as the light source, dramatically limiting the cycling stability during discoloration processes. To address this problem, a near-infrared (NIR)-responsive rewritable paper via doping layered Co-metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) into the stable polyvinylidene fluoride matrix is reported for the first time. Layered Co-MOF shows a rapid color-switching characteristic between orange and black blue upon NIR illumination on/off because of the interlayer spacing changes. Benefiting from the soft network structures of the matrix, Co-MOF can be homogeneously distributed to deliver an outstanding reversibility performance, including rapid response, coloration in a short period, and decoloration within about 3 min in ambient air. The fabrication of new photoreversible color switching system holds great potential in communication security, which offers a viable pathway to achieve ink-free photoreversible printing.

Ferrous and sulfur ions are essential elements for the human body, which play an active role in maintaining the body's normal physiology. Meanwhile, mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA) possesses good hydrophilicity and biocompatibility. In the present work, ferrous sulfide embedded into polydopamine nanoparticles (PDA@FeS NPs) was designed and synthesized via a simple predoping polymerization–coprecipitation strategy and the intelligent PDA matrix successfully prevented the oxidation and agglomeration of FeS nanoparticles. Importantly, there was an obvious synergistic enhancement of the photothermal effect between polydopamine and ferrous sulfide. The PDA@FeS NPs exhibited excellent photothermal antibacterial effects against both E. coli and S. aureus. The near-infrared (NIR) light-mediated release of ferrous ions could reach about 26.5% under weakly acidic conditions, further triggering the Fenton reaction to produce toxic hydroxyl radicals (·OH) in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. The antibacterial mechanism could be attributed to cell membrane damage and cellular content leakage with the synergistic effect of PTT and CDT. This study highlighted the germicidal efficacy of PDA@FeS NPs and provided a new strategy for designing and developing next-generation antibacterial platforms.

Light has several advantages as the stimulus for a triggered drug release. Currently, the applications of phototriggered drug-release devices (PDDs) are largely limited by two factors: the limited tissue penetration and detrimental effects caused by excitation light (ultraviolet or visible light). To address this disadvantage, this study developed nanocomposites based on upconversion nanoparticles (UC), which could convert near-infrared light to ultraviolet–visible light and trigger drug release. By loading UC and doxorubicin (DOX) into photoresponsive copolymer PEG-NMAB-PLA (PNP), near-infrared responsive copolymer upconversion nanocomposites (PNP-DOX-UC) were constructed. We proved that PNP-DOX-UC showed the fast release and strong cytotoxicity under near-infrared irradiation in vitro. The therapeutic efficacy study indicated that PNP-DOX-UC+hv had the enhanced antitumor efficiency. In the study, UC becoming an internal ultraviolet–visible light source for near-infrared excitation develops an applicable and efficient approach to meet the requirements for UV/vis excitation, which is a major disadvantage in photosensitive materials developed for pharmaceutical and biomedical applications.

In this study, a sensitive near-infrared (NIR) photodetector based on a CsBi3I10 perovskite/Si heterojunction is developed by directly coating a layer of inorganic perovskite onto a planar Si substrate. The as-constructed heterojunction displays a representative current rectifying behavior in the dark and remarkable photoresponse properties upon light irradiation. The distinct photovoltaic effect enables the device to function as a self-driven photodetector working at zero bias. Furthermore, it is observed that the photodetector is sensitive in a wide spectral region with peak sensitivity at ∼820 nm. Under 808 nm illumination, the critical photoresponse parameters of responsivity, external quantum efficiency and specific detectivity reached 178.7 mA W−1, 27.2% and 4.99 × 1010 Jones at zero bias, respectively, which can be further increased to as high as 492.1 mA W−1, 75.2% and 1.38 × 1011 Jones at a working bias of −1 V. What is more, the present device also holds a large Ilight/Idark ratio of ∼1 × 104, a rapid response speed of 73/36 μs, and excellent air stability even after 3 months of storage under ambient conditions. Considering the good photoresponse performance and facile assembly approach, the CsBi3I10 perovskite/Si heterojunction possesses huge potential for future cost-effective and high-performance photodetection applications.

Perovskite quantum dots (QDs) have gained significant attention for both fundamental research and commercial applications because of their outstanding optoelectronic properties and tremendous application potentials. Reducing defect density in all-inorganic perovskite QDs is of great importance for performance enhancement. In this work, it is found that the UV-NIR femtosecond laser pulse treatments could increase the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of the CsPbBr3 perovskite QDs from 71 to 95%. Such an enhancement could be attributed to decrease of the defects after laser exposure, which is consistent with its red-shifted PL and other characterization results. Furthermore, the dynamics of energy transfer from exciton to trapping in irradiated CsPbX3 QDs are studied to gain an insight into the relative strength of exciton-trapping exchange coupling. The results confirm that the trapping defects are decreased by laser irradiation, and the mechanism leading to the enhancement of PLQY is revealed. In addition, the enhanced stability of laser-irradiated CsPbX3 QDs is also testified. Finally, the application of laser-treated perovskite QDs in the liquid crystal display (LCD) backlight film is successfully demonstrated. It is further anticipated that this mechanism is helpful for the design of perovskite-based optoelectronic applications such as LCD technology and light-emitting devices.

The design of light-responsive peptide hydrogels with controllable drug release characteristics is still a challenge. Here, we fabricated a NIR light-responsive short peptide hydrogel by using a thermo-responsive short peptide hydrogel and PEGylated NbSe2 nanosheets, namely, the NbSe2–PEG@YD hydrogel. Under NIR light irradiation, the hydrogel began to collapse owing to the local heating, leading to the release of the cargos. The hydrogel exhibited recoverability and the release rate of the cargos could be accurately modulated by the NIR light irradiation according to the requirement. The excellent biocompatibility of this hydrogel ensured that it could be further developed as a drug carrier for clinical application.

In this work, a crosslinker terminal maleimide groups (EDM) has been synthesized and was used in reactions with the pendant furan groups of polyurethane (PUE) to prepare the self-healing electrically conductive composites based on Diels-Alder reaction, and Ag nanowires (AgNWs) as the conductive network inlaid in the surface layer of the polymer matrix layer. Inspired by the graphene-based materials for its versatility in both material and chemical properties, and we present a new synthetic strategy for the preparation of functional graphene nanosheets with DA group that can be employed in the self-healing polyurethane system. To our best knowledge, it hasn't been reported yet the structure graphene oxide materials (rmGO) in any systems. The rmGO served as fillers to reinforce the composites and would participated in the DA reactions. The excellent NIR light-induced self-healing property of prepared composites was realized through the photo-thermal effect of rmGO. The composite is capable of both structural and electrical healing via NIR irradiation. The injured samples can be locally repaired with high precision and efficiency without an obvious influence on those uninjured parts. The underlying polymer matrix can reform via the dynamic dissociation/recombination of Diels-Alder bonds to bring the separated areas of the AgNWs layer into contact to restore the conductivity. The NIR light-induced self-healing electrically conductive composites have wide potential for many fields, e.g., soft robots, flexible devices, and health-monitoring.

Photoinduced reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization generally adopts high-energy ultraviolet (UV) or blue light. In combination with photoredox catalyst, the excitation light wavelength was extended to the visible and even near-infrared (NIR) region for photoinduced electron transfer RAFT polymerization. In this report, we introduce for the first time a surface NIR-light-initiated RAFT polymerization on upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) without adding any photocatalyst and construct a functional inorganic core/polymer shell nanohybrid for application in cancer theranostics. The multilayer core–shell UCNPs (NaYF4:Yb/Tm@NaYbF4:Gd@NaNdF4:Yb@NaYF4), with surface anchorings of chain transfer agents, can serve as efficient NIR-to-UV light transducers for initiating the RAFT polymerization. A hierarchical double block copolymer brush, consisting of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and poly(oligo(ethylene oxide)methacrylate-co-2-(2-methoxy-ethoxy)ethyl methacrylate) (PEG for short), was grafted from the surface in sequence. The targeting arginine–glycine–aspartic (RGD) peptide was modified at the end of the copolymer through the trithiolcarbonate end group. After loading of doxorubicin, the UCNPs@PAA-b-PEG-RGD exhibited an enhanced U87MG cancer cell uptake efficiency and cytotoxicity. Besides, the unique upconversion luminescence of the nanohybrids was used for the autofluoresence-free cell imaging and labeling. Therefore, our strategy verified that UCNPs could efficiently activate RAFT polymerization by NIR photoirradiation and construct the complex nanohybrids, exhibiting prospective biomedical applications due to the low phototoxicity and deep penetration of NIR light.

Combinatorial photothermal therapy and chemotherapy is an extremely promising tumor therapeutic modality. However, such systems still remain challenges in stimulus sensitivity, avoiding drug leakage, and therapeutic safety. To solve these problems, we engineered actively loaded doxorubicin (DOX) and gold nanorod (GNR) liposomes through embedding stiff hollow mesoporous silica nanoparticles (HMSNs) in the liposomal water cavity (HMLGDB) to resist the influence of shear force of GNRs to prevent drug leakage. Under 808 nm laser irradiation, the ambient temperature was raised greatly because of the photothermal conversion of GNRs, thereby rupturing the lipid layer and then triggering the DOX release. The results of in vitro experiments showed that the low concentration of HMLGDB (15 μg/mL) could effectively overcome the MCF-7 cells (human breast cancer cell line) by the increase of DOX concentration intracellularly and the good photothermal effect of GNRs. After intravenous injection, HMLGDB exhibited intratumor aggregation and PTT capacity. Furthermore, the combined chemo–photothermal antitumor strategy demonstrated a high inhibition of tumor growth and low damage to normal tissues. The developed hybrids provide a paradigm for efficient combinatorial photothermal therapy (PTT) and chemotherapy (CT).

Natural biopolymers can be controllably in situ synthesized in organisms and play important roles in biological activities. Inspired by this, the manipulation of in situ biosynthesis of functional polymers in vivo will be an important way to obtain materials for meeting biological requirements. Herein, in situ biosynthesis of functional conjugated polymer at the tumor site was achieved via the utilization of specific tumor microenvironment (TME) characteristics for the first time. Specially, a water-soluble aniline dimer derivative (N-(3-sulfopropyl) p-aminodiphenylamine, SPA) was artfully in situ polymerized into polySPA (PSPA) nanoparticles at the tumor site, which was activated via the catalysis of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) overexpressed in TME to produce hydroxyl radical (•OH) by coinjected horseradish peroxidase (HRP). Benefiting from outstanding near-infrared (NIR)-II absorption of PSPA, the in situ polymerization process can be validly monitored by photoacoustic (PA) signal at the NIR-II region. Meanwhile, in situ polymerization would induce the size of polymeric materials from small to large, improving the distribution and retention of PSPA at the tumor site. On the combination of NIR-II absorption of PSPA and the size variation induced by polymerization, such polymerization can be applied for tumor-specific NIR-II light mediated PA image and photothermal inhibition of tumors, enhancing the precision and efficacy of tumor phototheranostics. Therefore, the present work opens the way to manipulate TME-activated in situ biosynthesis of functional conjugated polymer at the tumor site for overcoming formidable challenges in tumor theranostics.

Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most serious bone malignancy, and the survival rate has not significantly improved in the past 40 years. Thus, it is urgent to develop a new strategy for OS treatment. Chemodynamic therapy (CDT) as a novel therapeutic method can destroy cancer cells by converting endogenous hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) into highly toxic hydroxyl radicals (·OH). However, the therapeutic efficacy of CDT is severely limited by the low catalytic efficiency and overexpressed glutathione (GSH). Herein, an excellent nanocatalytic platform is constructed via a simple solvothermal method using F127 as a soft template to form the hollow copper ferrite (HCF) nanoparticle, followed by the coating of polydopamine on the surface and the loading of doxorubicin (DOX). The Fe 3+ and Cu 2+ released from HCF@polydopamine (HCFP) can deplete GSH through the redox reactions, and then trigger the H 2 O 2 to generate ·OH by Fenton/Fenton-like reaction, resulting in enhanced CDT efficacy. Impressively, the photothermal effect of HCFP can further enhance the efficiency of CDT and accelerate the release of DOX. Both in vitro and in vivo experiments reveal that the synergistic chemodynamic/photothermal/chemo-therapy exhibits a significantly enhanced anti-OS effect. This work provides a promising strategy for OS treatment.

The combination of chemotherapy, photothermal therapy (PTT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) based on a single nanosystem is highly desirable for cancer treatment. In this study, we developed a versatile Pt(IV) prodrug-based nanodrug, PVPt@Cy NPs, to realize synchronous chemotherapy, PDT and PTT and integrate cancer treatment with bioimaging. To construct PVPt@Cy NPs, the amphiphilic Pt(IV)-based polymeric prodrug PVPt was synthesized by a facile one-pot coupling reaction, and then it was used to encapsulate an optotheranostic agent (HOCyOH, Cy) via hydrophobic interaction-induced self-assembly. These NPs would disaggregate under acidic, reductive conditions and NIR irradiation, which are accompanied by photothermal conversion and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. Moreover, the PVPt@Cy NPs exhibited an enhanced in vitro anticancer efficiency with 808-nm light irradiation. Furthermore, the PVPt@Cy NPs showed strong NIR fluorescence and photothermal imaging in H22 tumor-bearing mice, allowing the detection of the tumor site and monitoring of the drug biodistribution. Therefore, PVPt@Cy NPs displayed an enormous potential in combined chemo-phototherapy.Keywords:combined chemo-phototherapy;Pt(IV) prodrug;nanoparticle;bioimaging
