Efficient separation of CO 2 from CH 4 is a critical unit operation for biogas upgrading and achieving carbon neutrality goals. While mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) offer an energy-efficient alternative to traditional separation processes, their industrial deployment is often restricted by engineering challenges, specifically filler agglomeration and non-selective interfacial defects. Herein, we report a novel MOF (metal–organic framework) gel network templated polymerization strategy that effectively circumvents these limitations. In this approach, a continuous, pre-formed network of UiO-66 MOF gel serves as a structural scaffold, within which the 6FDA-ODA polyimide matrix is directly polymerized. This method fosters exceptional interfacial adhesion and uniform dispersion of the filler, successfully eliminating non-selective defects. The resulting MMMs exhibit remarkable gas separation performance, with the optimal membrane (MA-0.075, with 1.6 wt% UiO-66 gel loading) achieving a CO 2 permeability of 30.9 Barrer and a CO 2 /CH 4 selectivity of 135.5 under mixed-gas conditions. This represents enhancements of 212 % and 162 %, respectively, over the pristine 6FDA-ODA polyimide membrane, surpassing the 2008 Robeson upper bound. Furthermore, the membrane demonstrated excellent operational stability over 120 h. This work provides a scalable fabrication route for advanced MMMs, demonstrating significant potential for energy-efficient gas separation applications.

High temperature (HT) dielectrics have drawn increasing attentions due to strong potentials in capacitors working in extreme temperature conditions. The selection of high temperature ceramic fillers and polymers and the design of composite configurations are crucial for obtaining excellent dielectric and energy storage performances. In this study, PbTiO 3 nanofibers with a confined tetragonality with a lower c/a ratio are synthesized by the molten-salt method and polyimide (PI)/PbTiO 3 nanofiber composites are prepared via the in-situ polymerization. The composite (50 vol% filler loading) possesses greatly enhanced dielectric constant of 46 and low tanδ of ~0.02 at 1 kHz; ε r is 13.9 times larger than 3.3 for PI. From electric displacement-electric field loop investigations, superior energy storage performances of a large discharged energy-density of 16 J cm −3 under 300 MV m −1 and a large charge/discharge efficiency of 80 % are obtained. Furthermore, dielectric constant, energy density and efficiency of the composite exhibit a very good thermal stability from the room-temperature to over 200 °C. Overall, superior properties as well as good thermal stabilities of the PI/PbTiO 3 nanofiber composites indicate strong potentials in HT electrical energy storage capacitors.

The rapid development of advanced electronics, hybrid vehicles, etc. has imposed heightened requirements on the performance of polymer dielectrics. However, the energy density (Ue) of polymer dielectrics significantly decreases due to increased leakage current and dielectric loss under high temperatures and high electric fields. Herein, γ phase Ga2O3 (γ-Ga2O3) nanoplates with wide-bandgap (∼4.7 eV) and moderate dielectric constant (∼10.0) were synthesized and incorporated into a polyimide (PI) matrix. The γ-Ga2O3 nanoplates impede charge injection and transport within the nanocomposites under dual trap mechanisms, namely, deep traps introduced by band alignment at the interface between γ-Ga2O3 and PI and the defective spinel structure of γ-Ga2O3 with lattice defects that function as additional charge carrier traps. Additionally, γ-Ga2O3 nanoplates also serve as electron scattering centers and act as electrical barriers; thus, the leakage current and conduction loss get reduced. Consequently, the nanocomposite with 1 wt % γ-Ga2O3 exhibits a discharge energy density of 4.591 J cm–3 and a breakdown strength (Eb) of 501.49 MV m–1 at 150 °C, which are significantly higher than those of commercial biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) at 25 °C. Moreover, the nanocomposite exhibits remarkable cyclic stability over 120,000 cycles with only 1.2% fluctuation. This work provides a semiconductor filler strategy in the design of polymer nanocomposites for capacitive energy storage at high-temperature and high electric field environments.

A novel series of sulfonated polyimide (SPI)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite membranes applied in vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) is prepared and characterized in this work. With the hydrophilicity and good barrier of PVA, the composite membranes exhibit better hydrolysis stability and vanadium ion resistance than normal SPIs with five-membered rings. In VRFB single-cell tests, because of the highest proton selectivity, the SPI5/PVA5 composite membrane shows lower self-discharge rate, higher coulombic efficiency, and energy efficiency (EE) (79.5% vs 77.8% at 30 mA cm −2 ) than that of Nafion117. Besides, the composite membranes present stable performances up to 100 cycles without significant decline in EE.

Solid polymer electrolytes drastically enhance the operational safety of Li metal battery by eliminating the flammable liquid electrolyte, but still suffer from low ionic conductivity and inferior thermostability. Herein, we tack this issue by strengthening the polyvinylidene fluoride matrix with lithiophilic polyimide . The actively conjugated carbonyl groups in polyimide polymer backbone with Li + -conductivity feature accelerate the ion conduction, accordingly improving the ionic conductivity up to 4.1 × 10 −4 S cm −1 . With the polyimide solid electrolyte , lithium symmetrical battery shows a stable operation without obvious dendrite growth over 300 h at 0.17 mA cm −2 , effectively uniformizing the Li + deposition at the electrolyte/anode interface. The LiFePO 4 cell based on the polyimide electrolyte delivers a high discharge capacity of 126 mAh g −1 at 25 °C with a capacity retention of 86% after 500 cycles at 0.15 mA cm −2 . In addition, polyimide chain with high thermostability owns affinity to polyvinylidene fluoride with an adsorption energy of 0.1 eV, giving rise to 35% enhancement in mechanical strength and 68% reduction in thermal shrinkage at 300 °C as compared with pure polyvinylidene fluoride electrolyte. This design allows a promising route for enhancing the safety operation of polymer electrolyte and promoting ionic transfer by reconstructing the polymer architecture .

A novel core–shell structure of Al2O3 nanoparticles (NPs) attached on poly(amic acid) (PAA) fiber has been successfully developed by facile coaxial electrospinning technology for the first time. The as-prepared PAA fiber went through imidization to prepare the Al2O3@polyimide (Al2O3@PI) film. The resultant films with different Al2O3 contents are characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis, and dynamical mechanical analysis. The results indicated that the Al2O3 NPs could uniformly decorate the surface of fibers with a diameter of about 1 μm, which enhanced the thermal and mechanical properties of the fiber-based films. In particular, the flexible film with a high content of Al2O3 of 59.3 wt% presents a high storage modulus (2.11 GPa) and excellent thermal stability (474 °C at 5% mass loss) as well as superior in plane thermal conductivity of 9.66 W m−1 K−1. Finally, compared with pure PI film, the Al2O3@PI fiber-based film exhibits excellent thermal transfer ability in light emitting diode packaging. Therefore, the novel Al2O3@PI fiber-based film with integrated properties of insulation, thermal conductivity and flexibility can be used for wearable electronics and power devices.

Gas barrier membranes with impressive moisture permeability are highly demanded in air or nature gas dehumidification. We report a novel approach using polyetheramine oligomers covalently grafted on the carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to engineer liquid-like CNT nanofluids (CNT NFs), which are incorporated into a polyimide matrix to enhance the gas barrier and moisture permeation properties. Benefiting from the featured liquid-like characteristic of CNT NFs, a strong interfacial compatibility between CNTs and the polyimide matrix is achieved, and thus, the resulting membranes exhibit high heat resistance and desirable mechanical strength as well as remarkable fracture toughness, beneficially to withstanding creep, impact, and stress fatigue in separation applications. Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy measurements indicate a significant decrease in fractional free volume within the resulting membranes, leading to greatly enhanced gas barrier properties while almost showing full retention of moisture permeability compared to that of the pristine membrane. For membranes with 10 wt % CNT NFs, the gas transmission rates, respectively, decrease 99.9% for CH4, 94.4% for CO2, 99.2% for N2, and 97.9% for O2 compared with that of the pristine membrane. Most importantly, with the increasing amount of CNT NFs, the hybrid membranes demonstrate a simultaneous increase of barrier performance and permselectivity for H2O/CH4, H2O/N2, H2O/CO2, and H2O/O2. All these results make these membranes potential candidates for high-pressure natural gas or hyperthermal air dehydration.

Mixed matrix carbon molecular sieve membranes are gas separation membranes that combine the synergistic effects of carbon molecular sieves and inorganic components. The DD3R molecular sieve exhibits significant molecular size sieving effects and demonstrates high adsorption selectivity toward CO2. Against the backdrop of the current push for carbon neutrality, highly efficient CO2 separation materials are of great significance to the development of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology. This is particularly true in natural gas purification and industrial exhaust gas treatment, where higher demands are placed on the efficient separation of CO2 and CH4. Based on this, this study used the DD3R molecular sieve as the functional filler, used 6FDA-DAM polyimide as the precursor, and obtained the hybrid matrix carbon membrane through a high-temperature carbonization process. The microstructure and physicochemical characteristics of the carbon membranes were systematically characterized using scanning electron microscopy and other techniques, and the effect of DD3R loading on their gas separation performance was investigated. The results indicate that as the doping concentration of DD3R molecular sieves increases, both the CO2 permeability and CO2/CH4 separation selectivity of the mixed matrix carbon molecular sieve membranes exhibit a trend of initially increasing and then decreasing. Furthermore, when the DD3R doping mass fraction reached 0.3 wt %, the prepared carbon membrane exhibited optimal performance, achieving a CO2 permeability coefficient of 29,679 Barrer and a CO2/CH4 selectivity of 33.1, surpassing the Robeson upper limit reported in 2019. The results indicate that, owing to the unique pore structure of the DD3R molecular sieve and its synergistic interaction with the carbon matrix, the carbon membrane effectively overcomes the trade-off between permeability and selectivity, demonstrating significant potential for industrial applications and holding broad prospects in the field of carbon capture.

Surface metallization of polyimide (PI) films is essential for constructing conductive electrodes and interconnects in flexible electronics, directly determining device integration and reliability. However, the high inertness and low surface energy of PI necessitate complex pretreatment in conventional vacuum deposition, incurring high costs and substrate damage, while wet etching faces environmental burdens and poor compatibility, both failing to meet large-scale manufacturing demands. Inspired by the stable coordination of histidine in Nereis jaws, a coordination-directed molecular design strategy is proposed. By introducing nitrogen-containing heterocyclic units into PI molecular chains, intrinsic metal anchoring sites are constructed, enabling direct film metallization without destructive adhesion-promoting surface pretreatments. This process integrates with photolithography, printing, and direct writing for cross-scale controllable metallization, fabricating planar wiring and vertical interconnect access (VIA) structures for 3D high-density integration. The metallized PI films with azaindole-bearing diamine moieties achieve the highest 5B-grade adhesion and exhibit excellent environmental stability, tolerating repeated bending, high-temperature exposure, and ultrasonic impact. Commercial PI surface metallization can be achieved with minimal functional monomers and is directly compatible with electronic soldering and device integration. This strategy overcomes the trade-off between interfacial adhesion and substrate integrity, providing a viable pathway for scalable flexible electronics manufacturing.

With the increasing severity of electromagnetic (EM) pollution, conductive porous materials have been widely used as effective electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials to protect electronic equipment and human health. Although conventional conductive porous materials exhibit better impedance matching and lower EM wave reflection than metal-plate-based shielding materials. It remains challenging to overcome their poor mechanical strength and large thickness. In this study, we fabricated hot-pressed hierarchically porous polyimide foam (PF)/carbon black (CB)/Ni–P and PF/CB/Fe 3 O 4 –P composites with continuous conductive pathways using a chemical foaming and hot-pressing strategy. Benefiting from the continuous conductive pathways and hierarchically porous architecture, PF/CB/Ni–P containing 80 wt% Ni nanoparticles achieved a maximum EMI shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) of 60.7 dB in the X-band at a thickness of 5 mm. Meanwhile, the thicknesses of PF/CB/Fe 3 O 4 –P and PF/CB/Ni–P were further reduced by the hot-pressing strategy, exhibiting optimal absorption coefficients (A) of 0.51 and 0.68, respectively. The results demonstrate that this preparation method achieves excellent comprehensive performance, including enhanced mechanical strength and absorption-dominated EMI shielding, providing a promising approach for designing adaptive EMI shielding systems for aerospace and electronic applications. To address the current limitation in advanced packaging where water-developable photosensitive polyimides (PSPI) exhibit high dielectric constants due to polar groups (e.g., hydroxyl or carboxyl groups), a novel structural design approach for water-developable PSPI based on side-chain polyamide esters has been developed. This innovation successfully resolves the issue of elevated dielectric constants in existing water-developable PSPI formulations. This method enables aqueous development through the utilisation of tertiary ammonium groups in the side chains, while the side chains can be completely removed during the imidisation process without affecting the dielectric properties of the polyimide backbone. Based on this method, fluorinated groups, bulky side groups, and alicyclic rings were introduced into the molecular backbone to synthesise a series of structurally diverse PSPI polymers. All these PSPIs feature low dielectric constants (with the lowest ɛ < 2.5 at 10 GHz) while achieving photolithographic resolution down to 2 μm. This represents a major breakthrough in the field of water-developable low-dielectric-constant photoresist polyimides, meeting the demands of advanced packaging technology development and demonstrating excellent application potential.

Two-dimensional MXene materials have exhibited considerable promise for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding due to their excellent electrical conductivity. However, achieving excellent mechanical properties and high EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) simultaneously in such composite materials with the lowest content of MXene remains a continuing challenge. Herein, delignified wood (DW) aerogel with porous structure was obtained by the sodium chlorite method, and the ternary composite film of polyimide (PI)/MXene/DW was fabricated by sequential vacuum impregnation of MXene and polyamide acid solution, followed by hot pressing and thermal imidization. The introduction of PI significantly improves the mechanical properties of the composite film, exhibiting the tensile strength and modulus of 88.97 MPa and 2.93 GPa, respectively. The composite film exhibits the EMI SE of 15.2 dB in the X-band range with the MXene content of only 7 wt% and the thickness of 0.3 mm, corresponding to a high SE/ t of 50.7 dB/mm. Moreover, the composite film shows stable EMI shielding performance even after exposing in a variety of harsh environments and good flame retardancy properties. Therefore, the resulting composite film exhibits excellent EMI shielding and flame retardancy performance, which provides the potential applications in aerospace and related fields.
