Screening for the action mechanisms of Fe and Ni in the reduction of Cr(VI) by Fe/Ni nanoparticles

Xia Ruan,Hong Liu,Xiaoyong Ning,Dongye Zhao,Xianyuan Fan

Zero-valent iron (ZVI), Fe 2+ and H 2 are possible electron donors in the reduction of Cr(VI) by nanoscale ZVI (n-ZVI). However, it is often ambiguous about the roles of these electron donors in the reductive removal of Cr(VI) from groundwater and wastewater. This study investigated the action mechanisms of Fe and Ni in Cr(VI) reduction by Fe/Ni nanoparticles (n-Fe/Ni). Among the three possible reduction mechanisms of ZVI, direct electron transfer from ZVI and its corrosion product, Fe 2+ , were confirmed to be responsible for the reduction removal of Cr(VI). H 2 , another product of ZVI corrosion, was found incapable of reducing Cr(VI). In addition, the secondary metal Ni in n-Fe/Ni was found to facilitate the direct electron transfer from ZVI owing to its ability to inhibit the passivation of ZVI and to enhance the production of Fe 2+ due to the formation of Fe Ni galvanic cells . The results of characterizations on n-Fe/Ni before and after the reaction with Cr(VI) demonstrated that Cr(VI) was reduced to Cr(III), which existed as FeCr 2 O 4 precipitates on the surface of n-Fe/Ni, resulting in effective sequestration of Cr(VI). These findings are important for understanding the main mechanisms of bimetallic nanoparticles or nanomaterials for reductive immobilization of Cr(VI), and may guide further ZVI-based technology development for remediation of contaminated water or soil with redox-active contaminants.

Hierarchically porous Fe/N–C hollow spheres derived from melamine/Fe-incorporated polydopamine for efficient oxygen reduction reaction electrocatalysis

Bomin Feng,Xiuju Wu,Yanli Niu,Wei Li,Yunxi Yao,Weihua Hu,Chang Ming Li

Fe/N–C catalysts show great potential for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) but their catalytic activity should be further improved for practical application. Here, we report a high performance Fe/N–C hollow sphere with excellent ORR activity in both alkaline and acidic solutions. It is synthesized via pyrolysis of a melamine/Fe-incorporated polydopamine nanosphere precursor at 800 °C in an argon atmosphere. The N-rich melamine in the precursor affords abundant N dopants to form dense Fe–Nx active sites and also facilitates the formation of micropores in the catalyst via the gasification effect, together improving the ORR activity. The as-reported Fe/N–C catalyst outperforms the Pt/C catalyst in basic media (45 mV more positive half wave potential), approaches the Pt/C catalyst in acidic media (55 mV lower half wave potential), and exhibits impressive performance in Zn–air primary batteries.

Properties of Fe2SiO4/SiO2 coated Fe-Si soft magnetic composites prepared by sintering Fe-6.5wt%Si/Fe3O4 composite particles

Zigui Luo,Xi'an Fan,Wentao Hu,Fan Luo,Jian Wang,Zhaoyang Wu,Xin Liu,Guangqiang Li,Yawei Li

In this work, Fe 2 SiO 4 /SiO 2 coated Fe-Si soft magnetic composites (SMCs) have been prepared successfully via ball milling Fe-6.5wt%Si/Fe 3 O 4 composite particles combined with subsequent spark plasma sintering (SPS) process. The formation mechanism of Fe 2 SiO 4 /SiO 2 insulating layer and effect of Fe 3 O 4 coating content on the microstructure and properties for the Fe-Si SMCs were investigated in detail. It is interesting that high temperature SPS process would lead to the occurrence of redox reactions between Fe 3 O 4 and Si from Fe-Si alloy cores, and resulted in the transformation from Fe 3 O 4 coating layer to Fe 2 SiO 4 /SiO 2 insulating layer. As a consequence, the novel Fe-Si SMCs exhibited superior performances including high saturation magnetization (190.4 emu/g) and low core loss (9.02 mW/cm 3 at 10 kHz) decreased by 89.1% compared to that of the uncoated Fe-Si SMCs (83.08 mW/cm 3 at 10 kHz). The results indicated that the method of preparing insulating layer by the redox reactions is a simple and effective way to synthesize new SMCs with high performance for electro-magnetic energy conversion equipments.

Atomic-Level Fe-N-C Coupled with Fe3C-Fe Nanocomposites in Carbon Matrixes as High-Efficiency Bifunctional Oxygen Catalysts

Xueping Sun,Peng Wei,Songqi Gu,Jinxu Zhang,Zheng Jiang,Jing Wan,Zhaoyang Chen,Li Huang,Yue Xu,Chun Fang,Qing Li,Jiantao Han,Yunhui Huang

Highly active and durable bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts are of pivotal importance for clean and renewable energy conversion devices, but the lack of earth-abundant electrocatalysts to improve the intrinsic sluggish kinetic process of oxygen reduction/evolution reactions (ORR/OER) is still a challenge. Fe-N-C catalysts with abundant natural merits are considered as promising alternatives to noble-based catalysts, yet further improvements are urgently needed because of their poor stability and unclear catalytic mechanism. Here, an atomic-level Fe-N-C electrocatalyst coupled with low crystalline Fe 3 C-Fe nanocomposite in 3D carbon matrix (Fe-SAs/Fe 3 C-Fe@NC) is fabricated by a facile and scalable method. Versus atomically FeN x species and crystallized Fe 3 C-Fe nanoparticles, Fe-SAs/Fe 3 C-Fe@NC catalyst, abundant in vertical branched carbon nanotubes decorated on intertwined carbon nanofibers, exhibits high electrocatalytic activities and excellent stabilities both in ORR ( E 1/2 , 0.927 V) and OER ( E J=10 , 1.57 V). This performance benefits from the strong synergistic effects of multicomponents and the unique structural advantages. In-depth X-ray absorption fine structure analysis and density functional theory calculation further demonstrate that more extra charges derived from modified Fe clusters decisively promote the ORR/OER performance for atomically FeN 4 configurations by enhanced oxygen adsorption energy. These insightful findings inspire new perspectives for the rational design and synthesis of economical–practical bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts.

Highly Advanced Degradation of Thiamethoxam by Synergistic Chemisorption-Catalysis Strategy Using MIL(Fe)/Fe-SPC Composites with Ultrasonic Irradiation

Yanan Wei,Bingfeng Wang,Xinfang Cui,Yaseen Muhammad,Yanjuan Zhang,Zuqiang Huang,Xuesheng Li,Zhenxia Zhao,Zhongxing Zhao

MIL(Fe)/Fe-doped nanospongy porous biocarbon (Fe-SPC) composite was fabricated from MIL-100(Fe) via in situ growth on a unique Fe-doped nanospongy porous biocarbon (Fe-SPC) and was used as Fenton-like catalyst for advanced degradation of thiamethoxam (THIA). Fe was loaded on silkworm excrement and calcined to Fe-SPC with nanospongy and high sp2 C structure. The in situ growth strategy embedded the Fe-SPC into MIL-100(Fe) crystals and formed conductive heterojunctions with an intensified interface by Fe-bridging effect, which was confirmed by negative shift of Fe3+ binding energy in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. MIL(Fe)/Fe-SPC composites exhibited high degree of crystallinity and surface area (Brunauer–Emmett–Teller: 1730 m2/g). Liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry and density functional theory simulations demonstrated that THIA was converted to a relatively stable compound (C4H5N2SCl), which could be captured by MIL-100(Fe) with strong chemical bonding energy (Fe–N, −587 kJ/mol), followed by a significant geometric distortion, resulting in a thorough degradation. Efficient charge separation and synergistic chemisorption-catalysis strategy resulted in the high catalytic activity of MIL(Fe)/Fe-SPC. The composite catalyst concurrently exhibited high mineralization ratio with 95.4% total organic carbon removal (at 25 °C and 180 min) and good recycling ability under wider neutral/alkaline conditions. Endorsing to these intriguing properties, MIL(Fe)/Fe-SPC can be deemed an efficient contender for removal of hard-degradable pesticides and other environmental pollutants in practical applications.

Fabrication of an Fe-Doped ZIF-67 Derived Magnetic Fe/Co/C Composite for Effective Removal of Congo Red

Yu Cao,Zeming Dai,Xuan Zhou,Yuting Lin,Jianhua Hou

The dyes in printing and dyeing wastewater are harmful to the human body and the environment. It is essential to develop practical and effective adsorbents to deal with them. In this study, an Fe-doped, ZIF-67 derived Fe/Co/C composite material with strong magnetism was successfully synthesized. The effects of pH, initial concentration, and adsorption time on the properties of the adsorbent were investigated. To further improve the removal efficiency and enhance the practicality, potassium peroxymonosulfate (PMS) was added to the system due to its Fenton-like effect. Then, an Fe/Co/C composite was used with PMS to remove Congo red (CR) with a 98% removal of 250 mg·L−1. Moreover, for its high saturation magnetization of 85.4 emu·g−1, the Fe/Co/C composite can be easily recovered by applying a magnetic field, solving the problem that powdery functional materials are difficult to recover and, thus, avoiding secondary pollution. Furthermore, since the composite material was doped before carbonization, this synthetic strategy is flexible and the required metal elements can be added at will to achieve different purposes. This study demonstrates that this Fe-doped, ZIF-67 derived magnetic material has potential application prospects for dye adsorption.

Fe-doped Ni nanocrystals as a cocatalyst for efficient BiVO4 photoanode: Mechanism insights into Fe-accelerated in-situ reconstruction

Xing Cao,Qianxi Dang,Huanhui Chen,Yubin Zhao,Ya Liu,Junrong Zeng,Qing Ma,Liubiao Zhong,Dayou Wang,Yejun Qiu

To address the severe carrier recombination in BiVO 4 -based Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting, we developed Fe-doped Ni nanocrystals (Fe:Ni NCs) through an organic liquid phase synthesis as an efficient cocatalyst. Through a dip-coating and annealing modification process, the optimized Fe:Ni/BiVO 4 photoanode achieved a remarkable photocurrent density of 4.72 mA/cm 2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE, representing a 4.07-fold enhancement over pristine BiVO 4 . In-situ Raman characterization revealed that Fe:Ni NCs on BiVO 4 underwent in-situ surface reconstruction to form a unique Fe:Ni@Fe:NiOOH core–shell structure during PEC reaction. The presence of Fe accelerated the conversion of Ni to active NiOOH at lower potential (0.25 V vs. RHE) compared to pure Ni NCs modified BiVO 4 photoanode (0.30 V vs. RHE). Mechanistic studies identified a dual activation pathway involving both applied potential and BiVO 4 valence band oxidation. Meanwhile, Fe:Ni NCs cores with high conductivity accelerated the migration and accumulation of holes into Fe:NiOOH shells, resulting in improved carrier injection efficiency and water oxidation kinetics. This work not only elucidates fundamental differences between PEC and electrocatalytic water splitting mechanisms but also provides a reference for designing high-performance PEC photoanodes.

Graphene oxide mediated Fe(III) reduction for enhancing Fe(III)/H2O2 Fenton and photo-Fenton oxidation toward chloramphenicol degradation

Feng Cheng,Peng Zhou,Yang Liu,Xiaowei Huo,Jian Zhang,Yue Yuan,Heng Zhang,Bo Lai,Yongli Zhang

Slow reduction of Fe(III) in iron-mediated Fenton-like systems strongly limits the decomposition of H 2 O 2 to produce hydroxyl radicals ( • OH). Here, we report that graphene oxide (GO) possesses excellent reactivity to enhance the Fe(III)/H 2 O 2 Fenton and photo-Fenton oxidation for degrading chloramphenicol (CAP). EPR analysis and quenching tests reveal that • OH is the primary oxidant for CAP degradation. The characterization analysis and iron species transformation experiments demonstrate that Fe(III) can combine with the functional groups on the GO surface to form GO-Fe(III) complexes. The chronopotentiometry and cyclic voltammogram suggest that GO can donate electrons to Fe(III) via intramolecular electron transfer and promote H 2 O 2 induced Fe(III) reduction by increasing the oxidation capability of Fe(III) due to the formation of GO-Fe(III) complexes, resulting in the strong promotion of the Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle for producing OH. Moreover, the dark- and vis-GO/Fe(III)/H 2 O 2 systems can effectively degrade CAP at initial pH ranging from 2.0 to 4.7. The reusability and stability of GO were evaluated by performing the cyclic degradation experiments of CAP. The OH induced degradation pathway of CAP was proposed involving three stages, based on intermediates analysis of UPLC-QTOF-MS/MS system. Therefore, the GO/Fe(III)/H 2 O 2 system with or without visible light shows high potential for application in environmental remediation.

MOF-Fe@C Nanocomposites for Microwave Absorption

Rongjuan Zhang,Qi Hu,Shaobo Yang,Song Yan,Yaxin Gu,Jiawei Ji,Zheng Zhou,Chaoze Liu,Xinran Li,Zihao Wang,Chengchun Tang

The arrival of the 5 G era has brought great benefits to our lives, but it has also brought problems such as electromagnetic radiation. Therefore, the demand for lightweight, high-performance microwave absorbing materials with wide effective bandwidth is increasing. Herein, MIL-53/g-C 3 N 4 is first synthesized from precursors of ferric chloride, terephthalic acid, and g-C 3 N 4 , and then thermally annealed at different temperatures to generate MOF-Fe@C nanocomposites. Heat treatment can effectively carbonize g-C 3 N 4 to amorphous carbon and reduce iron in MIL-53 to magnetic Fe and Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles through carbon-thermal reduction reaction. The synergistic effect of dielectric loss of amorphous carbon and magnetic losses of magnetic particles enhances attenuation and improves impedance matching, enhancing microwave absorption. The RL min of MOF-Fe@C(4)-700 is as low as -72.78 dB at 9.44 GHz at a thickness of 3.18 mm and its effective absorption bandwidth is as broad as 4.88 GHz, covering most of X-band frequency range. The research introduces a novel technique for synthesizing absorbers with controllable electromagnetic characteristics by incorporating g-C 3 N 4 as carbon sources into MOF materials.

Fe-based metal-organic frameworks as Fenton-like catalysts for highly efficient degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride over a wide pH range: Acceleration of Fe(II)/ Fe(III) cycle under visible light irradiation

Qiangshun Wu,Hanpei Yang,Li Kang,Zhao Gao,Feifan Ren

In this work, a series of Fe-based metal-organic frameworks (Fe-MOFs) were synthesized and served as Fenton-like catalysts for tetracycline hydrochloride (TC–HCl) degradation. Herein, for the first time, we have demonstrated that visible light can accelerate Fe(II)/Fe(III) cycle in the photo-Fenton system based on iron-oxo (Fe-O) clusters in frameworks. Among these Fe-MOFs, MIL-101 possessed the highest activity mainly ascribed to its largest specific surface area and pore volume, and the most coordinatively unsaturated iron sites. The synergistic effect in the MIL-101/H 2 O 2 /visible light system was derived from the efficient separation and migration of photogenerated carriers. Due to the function of solid acid catalysts, MIL-101 extended effective pH range up to 10.2 and exhibited good reusability and stability. Hydroxyl radicals generated from H 2 O 2 coordinated at iron active sites were determined as the main reactive oxidative species and acceleration of Fe(II)/Fe(III) cycle was responsible for highly effective degradation of TC–HCl.

Template-Assisted Construction of Atomically Dispersed Fe-N-C Catalysts With Dense Fe-N4C Sites for Enhanced Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Lijuan Wang,Jie Hou,Wubo Wan,Yongjie Mo,Zhijian Liao,Shengkui Zhong,Linhua Zhu

en This link goes to a English section zh This link goes to a Chinese section Atomically dispersed iron–nitrogen–carbon (Fe-N-C) catalysts have emerged as promising alternatives for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) owing to their highly atomic utilization. However, maintaining both Fe atomic dispersion and dense Fe-N x sites (typically below 2 wt%) in Fe-N-C catalysts is still a key challenge. In this investigation, a template (1,2-dicyanobenzene; DCB) assisted strategy has been reported to achieve hierarchically porous Fe-N/C DCB0.2 -900°C catalysts, which have atomically dispersed Fe-N 4 C active sites with a 5.45 wt% Fe loading and served for robust ORR. 1,2-dicyanobenzene containing abundant nitrogen source not only efficiently enhances the coordinated environment for dense Fe sites, but also facilitates the formation of a hierarchical porous structure in Fe-N/C DCB0.2 -900°C catalyst. Computational analysis demonstrated that template-assisted structural modification effectively reduces the energy barrier associated with *OOH intermediate formation while simultaneously adjusting the d-band center position of Fe-N 4 C coordination sites within the Fe-N/C DCB0.2 -900°C system. This optimization enhances the stabilization of oxygen-bearing intermediates and promotes accelerated kinetics of the ORR. Consequently, the Fe-N/C DCB0.2 -900°C exhibited a half-potential of 0.9 V versus RHE when evaluated in 0.1 M KOH electrolyte and achieved a peak power density of 220 mW cm −2 in a zinc–air battery, surpassing commercial Pt/C (0.88 V vs. RHE, 194 mW cm −2 ). Such methodology provides a new avenue for constructing dense metal active sites for achieving functional, but not limited to, ORR, catalysts and applications. 摘要 en This link goes to a English section zh This link goes to a Chinese section 原子分散的铁-氮-碳(Fe-N-C)催化剂因其高原子利用率,已成为很有前景的氧还原反应(ORR)替代催化剂。
