Birefringent materials are vital materials to modulate the polarization of light, and play a key role in plorization devices such as linear optical devices, optical communication devices, and fiber optic sensors. It is still a challenge to design excellent birefringent materials. Herein, we report an organic–inorganic hybrid oxalate birefringent material, (CN4H7)SbC2O4F2(H2O)0.5, by introducing organic delocalized π-conjugated [CN4H7]+ and [C2O4]2− groups, and stereochemical active inorganic SbO4F2 polyhedra. (CN4H7)SbC2O4F2(H2O)0.5 exhibits a large birefringence (Δn = 0.126@546 nm) that is almost equal to that of the well-known birefringent material α-BaB2O4. Theoretical calculations reveal that the distinguished birefringence should stem from the synergistic arrangement of π-conjugated [CN4H7]+ and [C2O4]2− planar groups, and highly distorted SbO4F2 polyhedra with a stereochemically active lone pair. The synergistic effect of π-conjugated systems and the lone pair electrons greatly boosts the birefringence, which is helpful for the development of high-performance birefringent materials.

Ocular infections and inflammation represent a clear risk to eye health, but standard eye masks often lack the necessary therapeutic features. Moreover, most existing studies employ a blended electrospinning approach, which leads to an inhomogeneous spatial distribution of the therapeutic agents. However, using the coaxial technique can address these limitations. This study develops a coaxial electrospun nanofibrous eye mask with dual antibacterial and antioxidant functions, aiming to provide an innovative ocular treatment tool for eye care. Generally, a core-shell structured bilayer polycaprolactone-polylysine/polyvinyl alcohol-resveratrol (PCL-PLs/PVA-RSV) membrane is successfully prepared by coaxial electrospinning, where the core is resveratrol-loaded PVA and the shell is PLs-loaded PCL. Results show uniform fiber morphology, favorable hydrophilicity, and potential for sustained release due to core-shell design. The membrane significantly inhibits the growth ofStaphylococcus aureus(S. aureus) andEscherichia coli(E. coli); at the same time, it exhibits excellent free radical scavenging ability and good component biocompatibility, achieving slow release of the two drugs and long-term antioxidant effect. This multifunctional platform offers a synergistic approach to combating microbial infection and oxidative stress, showing great potential for eye care.

Dengue virus (DENV), Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) and Zika virus (ZIKV) are the three most important flaviviruses, which can cause health problems worldwide. All these flaviviruses can cause liver damage, however, the mechanism of liver injury is still unclear. Metabolomics can give insight into the full complexity of a disease. In our study, we used an LC-MS method to analysis the metabolites in liver samples of the three flaviviruses-infected mice and the non-infected mice. Compared with the control mice, the liver of the DENV-infected, JEV-infected, and ZIKV-infected mice had 32, 34, and 55 differential metabolites. We also found that there were obvious differences in some metabolic pathways among the four groups. Metabonomic analysis of liver is very important for understanding the pathogenesis of flaviviruses.

Development of efficient non-precious and abundant electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is one of the key tasks in renewable energy technologies. Transition-metal selenides have been widely studied as promising candidates. Herein, a layer-structured CoSe2 was used as a precursor, followed by simple one-step dopamine coating. The as-prepared Co0.85Se@NC showed outstanding performance in both ORR and OER catalysis. The onset potential and half-wave potential of the ORR in 0.1 M KOH solution can reach 0.96 V and 0.85 V, respectively. The OER overpotential corresponding to 10 mA cm−2 in 1.0 M KOH solution is only 350 mV, which is much smaller than that of RuO2 (390 mV). Importantly, the catalyst showed good stability, demonstrating that the layered Co0.85Se@NC has great potential for advanced bifunctional electrocatalysis.

A novel water-soluble acidic heteropolysaccharide, called PPL-1, was purified fromPueraria lobata. PPL-1 had an average molecular weight of 35 Kad, and it was composed of glucose, arabinose, galactose and galacturonic acid (6.3:0.8:0.8:2.1). In accordance with methylation and nuclear magnetic resonance analyses, PPL-1 primarily consisted of (1→2)-linked α-Araf, (1→4)-linked α-Glcp, (1→)-linked β-Glcp, (1→6)-linked α-Glcp, (1→3,6)-linked α-Galp, (1→)-linked β-GalpA and (1→4)-linked α-GalpA. In terms of bioactivities, PPL-1 exhibited remarkable scavenging ability towards DPPH (1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) radicals and moderate activity by enhancing the proliferation rate of RAW 264.7 cells by approximately 30% along with the secretion of NO. This work demonstrates that PPL-1 can be a potential source of immunoenhancers and antioxidants. Keywords:Pueraria lobata;polysaccharide;structure;bioactivity

The hydrate-based CO 2 capture and storage technique is cutting-edge and promising, but it exhibits slow formation rates and insufficient gas storage capacity, making commercialization challenging. In this work, the CO 2 hydrate formation process in fresh water, memory water, and saltwater systems under the electrostatic field was studied, and the influence mechanism of the electrostatic field on the CO 2 hydrate formation was discussed. Experimental results showed that the nucleation and growth of CO 2 hydrate could be affected by the electrostatic field. The nucleation of CO 2 hydrate could be promoted in the presence of an electrostatic field. In the fresh water system, the completion of hydrate formation was 54.5% faster with the 150 V application compared to the one without the electrostatic field. The introduction of an external electrostatic field causes a further reduction in the system's free energy. In the memory water system, the residual hydrate cage fragments could promote the reformation process of hydrate. Nevertheless, the presence of the electrostatic field could weaken the memory effect . In the salt water system, the electrostatic field could promote hydrate formation after the stage of dissolution. Due to the collision of ions with hydrate nuclei, however, the completion time of hydrate formation was increased. This study is anticipated to provide novel insights into the promotion of hydrate formation through the implementation of an electrostatic field.

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a complex neurodegenerative disease affected by many factors. Although there are treatments to combat the symptoms of PD, such as levodopa and deep electrical stimulation, there is currently no ideal therapy to delay or prevent the progression of PD. Oxidative stress and neuroinflammation have been considered as the key mechanisms in the occurrence and development of PD. In theory, anti-oxidative stress and anti-neuroinflammation are effective strategies for the treatment of PD. In this work, we have attempted for the first time to construct a nitric oxide (NO) gas and drug combination therapeutic nanoplatform (Lf-UZSP) that can penetrate the blood–brain barrier (BBB) and target PD microenvironment through upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs). The nanoplatform can target the PD microenvironment in the brain and subsequently convert near-infrared (NIR) light into ultraviolet (UV) light, which in turn releases NO, and the disintegration of NO gas further promotes the release of paeoniflorin (Pae). The controllable release of NO and Pae is used to achieve short-acting and long-acting synergistic therapy. In vitro experiments demonstrate that Lf-UZSP exhibits promising neuroprotective effects in PD cell models by scavenging excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) and inhibiting neuroinflammation. Further in vivo experiments confirm that Lf-UZSP can significantly improve the motor impairment and alleviate the loss of dopaminergic (DA) neurons in the substantia nigra and striatum in PD mice.

The development of simple sensing platforms for evaluating the oral conditions has attracted great attentions for healthcare. Saliva or toothpaste contains various analytes that can indicate health conditions. A salivary glucose sensing platform can provide a convenient and non-invasive alternative detection approach for diabetic patients. Toothbrush is used every day, and it has an easy access to saliva biomarker and toothpaste residues. Here, we demonstrate for the first time an amperometric biosensor on a toothbrush, using glucose as a typical analyte. The carbon graphite ink and the Ag/AgCl ink are painted on a toothbrush as the sensing electrodes, followed by the enzyme immobilization. The sensor shows an excellent detection performance for glucose with a concentration ranging from 0.18 mM to 5.22 mM and a short detection time of less than 5 min. The sensor is promising for the non-invasive monitoring of salivary glucose levels in diabetic patients when they brush their teeth. We anticipate that these results would open up exciting opportunities for developing new toothbrush sensors, as well as advance related healthcare applications.

BACKGROUND The fermentation valorization of two main lignocellulosic monosaccharides, glucose and xylose, is extensively developed; however, it is restricted by limited yield and process complexity. An in vitro enzymatic cascade reaction can be an alternative approach. RESULTS In this study, a three-stage, five-enzyme cascade was developed to convert pretreated biomass to valuable chemicals. First, a ribose-5-phosphate isomerase B mutant isomerized xylose to d -xylulose with high substrate specificity, and a d -arabinose dehydrogenase continued to reduce d -xylulose to d -arabitol. Simultaneously, glucose was utilized for the coenzyme regeneration catalyzed by a glucose dehydrogenase, generating useful gluconic acid and achieving 73% of total conversion rate after 36 h. Then, six kinds of pretreated biomass lignocellulose were hydrolyzed by cellulase and hemicellulase, and corn cob was identified as the initial substrate for providing the highest monosaccharide content. A 65% conversion rate of the lignocellulosic xylose was obtained after 24 h. CONCLUSIONS This study presents a proof of concept to convert main lignocellulosic monosaccharides systematically by an enzymatic cascade at stoichiometric ratio. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Permanganate (MnO 4 − ), an oxidant that has been applied in water treatment , has highly varied reactivity toward pollutants. In this study, we found manganate (MnO 4 2− ) could destruct diverse functional groups, with oxidation rates being higher than that of permanganate under acidic and neutral conditions. Mechanistic study revealed manganate rapidly disproportionated to permanganate and colloidal MnO 2 in solution. Under acidic conditions, the in-situ formed colloidal MnO 2 possess higher reactivity than permanganate and primarily contributed to the degradation of pollutants. The reactivity of in-situ formed colloidal MnO 2 is highly sensitive to pH and decreased dramatically with increasing pH. Consequently, the contribution of MnO 2 to pollutant removal decreased with elevating pH, which also leads to the decreased degradation efficiency of micropollutants at high pH. Manganate is an intermediate produced during the manufacturing process of permanganate. This study indicates that manganate might be an alternative of permanganate for water purification under acidic and neutral conditions.

Fluorinated-defective titanium dioxide (F-TiO2−x) was successfully synthesized by fluorination of TiO2 through the hydrothermal method. The microstructure and physicochemical properties of the catalyst were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV–vis DRS). As expected, F-TiO2−x demonstrates high photocatalytic activity and stability on dye degradation. Results indicated that fluorine element can effective for stabilizing Ti3+ and oxygen vacancies on the surface of F-TiO2−x. With the increase in the amount of hydrofluoric acid (HF) added, the photocatalytic performance of the prepared material is first increased and then decreased, and the catalyst shows the best performance when the amount of HF added is 0.3 mL. For three different dyes, the catalysts all showed a certain photocatalytic degradation performance, and the degradation effect of rhodamine B was the best.

Ultrasound (US)-triggered sonodynamic therapy (SDT) has aroused intensive interest as a powerful alternative for cancer treatment in recent years due to its non-invasiveness and deep tissue penetration. However, the therapeutic effect of SDT alone is still limited by intrinsic hypoxia in solid tumors. Combined synergistic therapy strategies are highly desired for improving therapeutic efficiency. Herein, a rationally designed intelligent theranostic nanoplatform is developed for the enhancement of cancer treatment through synergistic SDT and nitric oxide (NO) therapy. This US-triggered nanoplatform is fabricated by integrating a sonosensitizer Rose Bengal (RB) and a NO donor (SNO) into manganese-doped hollow mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MH-SNO@RB). Impressively, the acidic and reducing tumor microenvironment accelerates the sustainable release of Mn ions from the framework, which facilitates the MH-SNO@RB to be used as a contrast agent for magnetic resonance imaging. More importantly, the reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by RB and NO molecules released from SNO, which are simultaneously triggered by US, can react with each other to yield highly reactive peroxynitrite (ONOO–) ions for effective tumor inhibition both in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, the nanoplatform demonstrates good hemocompatibility and histocompatibility. This study opens a new strategy for the full utilization of US and intelligent design avenues for high-performance cancer treatment.
