Green synthesis of proanthocyanidins-functionalized Au/Ag bimetallic nanoparticles

Shixian Deng,Baihan Zhao,Yayan Xing,Yuzhe Shi,Yujie Fu,Zhiguo Liu

Proanthocyanidins-functionalized Au/Ag bimetallic nanoparticles were synthesized by a hydrothermal method. The obtained Au/Ag nanoparticles have been characterized by UV-Vis absorption spectra (UV), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The UV and FTIR measurement indicated that the as-synthesized colloids have the spherical shapes and the presence of the polymerized proanthocyanidins around metal nanoparticles. TEM and XRD results revealed that the nanoparticles have uniform core-shell structures and the metal core possessed a highly crystalline structure. Furthermore, it was found that the proanthocyanidins-functionalized Au/Ag bimetallic nanoparticles have high removal efficiency for some organic dyes.

Colorimetric H2O2 Detection Using Ag-Nanoparticle-Decorated Silica Microspheres

Zhikun Zhang,Qingqing Liu,Yumin Liu,Ran Qi,Lilong Zhou,Zhengjie Li,Jimmy Yun,Runjing Liu,Yongqi Hu

In view of the importance of convenient and rapid H 2 O 2 detection for biological analysis, we herein propose Ag nanoparticle (NP)-decorated silica microspheres as a probe for instant and non-enzymatic on-site colorimetric detection of H 2 O 2 . The surface hydroxyl groups of silica microspheres were reacted with (3-mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane to afford thiolated microspheres that subsequently bind Ag NPs. The oxidation of residual –SH groups on the silica surface to –S–S– moieties in the presence of H 2 O 2 induces the aggregation of decorated microspheres and is accompanied by a color change. Sensor response is found to be proportional to H 2 O 2 concentration in the range from 100 nM to 1 mM, with UV–Vis and colorimetric detection limits determined as 10 − 8 M and 10 − 5 M, respectively. The developed platform is successfully used to detect H 2 O 2 in simulated human urine and is, therefore, concluded to be sufficiently stable and selective for practical applications.

Construction of chitosan/Ag nanocomposite sponges and their properties

Panghu Zhou,Zunen Xia,Chao Qi,Meng He,Tengbo Yu,Lei Shi

Chitosan/Ag nanocomposite sponges were prepared by soaking the chitosan hydrogels in AgNO 3 aqueous solution, which was heated at 80 °C to synthesize Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) in the porous chitosan matrix and freeze-dried. The structure and properties of the nanocomposite sponges were characterized by FT-IR, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and compressive testing. In our findings, the pores of the chitosan hydrogel were used as a microreactor to synthesize AgNPs, which could distribute evenly on the chitosan matrix. The chitosan/Ag nanocomposite sponges exhibited good mechanical properties, suitable water vapor transmission and noncytotoxicity. Antibacterial test revealed their excellent antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and E. coli . The chitosan/Ag nanocomposite sponges would have great potential as wound dressings due to their good properties and facile industrialization.

Ag-SrTiO3/TiO2 composite nanostructures with enhanced photocatalytic activity

Zhendong Liu,Zhen Ma

TiO 2 has been regarded as an efficient benchmark photocatalyst that can work under ultraviolet light. However, further modification of TiO 2 for achieving even higher photocatalytic activities is necessary for practical applications and for enriching the family of TiO 2 -based photocatalysts. Herein, a novel Ag-SrTiO 3 /TiO 2 photocatalyst was prepared by hydrothermally treating TiO 2 nanosheets in an aqueous Sr(OH) 2 solution (to form SrTiO 3 nanocubes supported on TiO 2 nanosheets) followed by depositing Ag nanoparticles via photoreduction in the presence of an aqueous AgNO 3 solution. In this case, Ag nanoparticles were found to be deposited on both SrTiO 3 and TiO 2 surfaces. The resulting Ag-SrTiO 3 /TiO 2 was found to be more active than reference catalysts such as TiO 2 , SrTiO 3 /TiO 2 , Ag/TiO 2 , and Ag/SrTiO 3 in photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) and ciprofloxacin hydrochloride (CIP) under simulated sun light. Relevant catalysts were characterized systematically, and possible reasons for the enhanced activity of Ag-SrTiO 3 /TiO 2 was explained.

Magnetic networks of carbon quantum dots and Ag particles

Ling Wang,Yitong Wang,Yuanyuan Hu,Guangzhen Wang,Shuli Dong,Jingcheng Hao

Self-assembly exploits a facile non-covalent way to couple structurally different building blocks for creating soft materials with synergetic novel properties and functions. Taking advantage of magneto-properties from magnetic surfactants as well as versatile functional ligand formed by carbon quantum dots with cysteine (cys-CQDs), the magnetic network materials were firstly constructed by using magnetic surfactants and cys-CQDs as self-assembly building blocks. Counterions of Br − , [GdCl 3 Br] − , [HoCl 3 Br] − in surfactants could control the morphology of magnetic network structures, and the concentration of magnetic surfactants manoeuvres a versatile scenario of self-assembly behavior. Self-assembly of cys-CQDs and CTAHo brought out a 10-fold increase in magnetic moment of CTAHo. The fluorescent property of carbon quantum dots firstly served as an effective indicator element to dissect the collective effect in self-assembly process. For the sake of capturing the target sequence-specific DNA molecules, in situ growth of Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) upon the magnetic network structures was realized by synergetically electrostatic and coordinated interaction of carboxyl groups and Ag ions . The magnetic Ag self-assemblies anchored thiol-containing DNA, serving as a magnetic separation booster for the target sequence-specific DNA molecules under an applied magnetic field, which will bring light on designing magneto-functional self-assembly materials according to practical application requirements.

Synthesis and antibacterial activity of Ag/CeO2 hybrid architectures

Wang Lijuan,Lv Hua,Li Binjie,Zhao Yanbao,Sun Lei

Flower-like ceria (CeO 2 ) architectures consisting of well aligned nanosheets were first synthesized by a glycol solvothermal method. The size of CeO 2 architectures is about 5 μm in width and 10 μm in length, with the nanosheets thickness below 100 nm. Subsequently, the adsorbed Ag ions on the surface of CeO 2 were in situ reduced to form Ag nanoparticles (NPs), leading to the fabrication of Ag/CeO 2 hybrid architectures (HAs). The formed Ag NPs with sizes of 20–40 nm were uniformly loaded on the surface of the CeO 2 sheets. The antibacterial properties of Ag/CeO 2 HAs against Gram-negative E. coli and Gram-positive S. aureus were evaluated by minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC), and a filter paper inhibition zone method. The results demonstrated that Ag/CeO 2 HAs displayed excellent antibacterial activity toward S. aureus and E. coli , which were attributed to the synergistic antibacterial effect between Ag NPs and CeO 2 in HAs . Here, CeO 2 nanoflowers as a new substrate could restrict Ag NPs aggregations and improve their antibacterial activities. Therefore, the resulted Ag/CeO 2 HAs would be considered as a promising antibacterial agent.

Ag/AgCl/Ag2MoO4 composites for visible-light-driven photocatalysis

Zhongyi Jiao,Junlei Zhang,Zhendong Liu,Zhen Ma

Ag 2 MoO 4 shows low photocatalytic activity under visible light. It would be interesting to develop Ag 2 MoO 4 -based composite/heterojunction photocatalysts working efficiently under visible light. Herein, novel Ag/AgCl/Ag 2 MoO 4 composites were obtained via photoreduction of AgCl/Ag 2 MoO 4 composites prepared by sequential precipitation. The composition, morphologies, and optical properties of the samples were studied via various characterization techniques. Photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B (RhB), methylene blue (MB), methyl orange (MO), norfloxacin (NOF), and tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) solutions was conducted under visible-light irradiation. An optimal Ag/AgCl/Ag 2 MoO 4 catalyst showed much higher photocatalytic activity than Ag 2 MoO 4 , and it also showed reasonably fine recyclability. Through radical-capturing experiments, photogenerated holes (h + ) were determined to be the main active species whereas hydroxyl radicals ( OH) were found to play a secondary role in photocatalysis. Possible photocatalytic mechanisms were proposed.

Optical and catalytic properties of Au-Ag bimetallic nanocomposites

Wu Chenglin,Han Deman,He Zhicai

The gold-silver (Au-Ag) bimetallic nanocomposites were prepared in acid aqueous solution by co-reduction of chloroauric acid and silver nitrate with sodium borohydride in the presence of well-defined diblock copolymer poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)- block -poly(4-vinylpyridine) UV–vis spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction revealed the formed nanocomposites were truly bimetallic nanoparticles rather than the physical mixture of monometallic nanoparticles. The bimetallic nanocomposites showed optical properties corresponding to both their metallic composition and system temperature. The surface plasmon resonance showed a red-shift with increase of the ratio of Au in the nanocomposites, and appeared in their temperature changes. The bimetallic nanocomposites exhibited surface plasmon band corresponding to Au below 4 °C, corresponding to both Au and Ag increasing to 42 °C, and corresponding to Ag above 45 °C. When these bimetallic nanocomposites were applied to catalyze 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol, their catalytic activity first increased and then decreased and finally increased again with the temperature change.

Interfacial interaction of Cu–Ag nanoparticles with different surfactants

Liang Mengfan,Zeng Guoan,Yang Shujie,Wei Xinyuan,Zhu Yan,Liu Jinkun

In this article, the effect of the surfactant on the interaction effect and structure stability of Cu–Ag nanoparticles (NPs) were studied by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and experiment. The results showed that Ag NPs were coated around the surface of Cu NPs in Cu–Ag/surfactant system. However, the introduction of different surfactants resulted in a different interaction styles. With the surfactant from the consist of single structure (PVP or CTAB) to the consist of multiple structure (PVP&CTAB), the interaction energy between the surfactants and NPs increased rapidly. Meanwhile, the surfactant mixture promoted the interaction among NPs; also, it reduced the interaction between the NPs and external circumstance; the interface effect could be further controlled by adjusting the surfactant or their mixture.

White light-emitting Ag+-doped H-SSZ-13 zeolite

Na Wang,Qianrui Li,Jinping Yuan,Di Zhao,Hongjian Yang,Yige Wang

Ag + -exchanged SSZ-13 zeolites with single-phase white-emitting, especially obtained in a mild temperature (400 °C), are highly desirable for the construction of white LEDs, but rarely reported. Herein, luminescent silver nanoclusters composites were synthesized though treating H-SSZ-13 zeolites in the presence of a moderate amount of sodium hydroxide solutions, by assembling the silver nanoclusters in the modified SSZ-13 zeolites, followed by heating under mild conditions, which it bright white light emission phenomena under a 365 nm UV light. This white emitting may be ascribed to the collapse of the zeolite skeleton due to the etching of the zeolites by NaOH, thereby formation and stabilization of silver nanoclusters within modified Na-SSZ-13 zeolites. For the first time, the white-emitting Ag@Na-SSZ-13-400 zeolites phosphors were obtained at a mild temperature (400 °C) with a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 24.45 % and the CIE chromaticity coordinate were (0.26, 0.33) under the 360 nm excitation. We believe that this work may provide a prospect for application of SSZ-13 zeolites and the preparation of luminescent AgNCs.

An integrated strategy for achieving oil-in-water separation, removal, and anti-oil/dye/bacteria-fouling

Yufei Wang,Zili Liu,Xingchuan Wei,Kuiliang Liu,Jiahai Wang,Jietao Hu,Jing Lin

Numerous strategies on the application of superwettable membranes for oil/water (O/W) separation have been proposed; however, few works on one-step separation strategies and the separation mechanism of complex O/W effluents containing organic dye and bacteria have been reported. Here, an integrated strategy for O/W separation, removal, and anti-oil/bacteria/dye-fouling is firstly proposed. A hydrogel fabricated PVDF@ZnO/Ag (H-PVDF@ZnO/Ag) membrane is designed with a superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic surface and hierarchical membrane channels, which exhibits superior separation efficiency (99.4%) and flux (1700 L m −2  h −1  bar −1 ). Considering the wettability, the interface intrusion pressure influences the O/W separation. Also considering the energy and molecular kinetics, the differences in the interaction energy and mean square displacement (MSD) of the water and oil molecules with the membrane obtained by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are the internal factors influencing the O/W separation. The experimental and MD simulation results demonstrate that the high organic dye removal efficiency (>99%) is attributed to the synergistic effect between the hydrogel electrostatic adsorption and the ZnO/Ag photodegradation. The excellent anti-oil/dye/bacteria-fouling is due to the low oil adhesion, hydration layer, photodegradation, and antibacterial activity. Introducing an amino resin to the membrane increases the membrane’s tolerance and resistance to mechanical damage and chemical attack due to the intertwined cross-linking network and hydrogen bonds. The membrane also exhibits effective separation of real wastewater from jeans factory. This strategy may inspire further research on the treatment of complex O/W effluents.
