Herein, we demonstrate a Mo/S co-doped BiOBr-based bimetal bismuth sulfur-oxybromide (Mo/S-BiOBr) catalyst with heterovalent molybdenum states and abundant oxygen vacancy defects for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHER) via a facile method. Mo/S co-doping adjusts the energy band structure of BiOBr and expands its visible light absorption. Hydrazine regulates the molybdenum with heterovalent states while endowing Mo/S-BiOBr with oxygen vacancy defects to balance the valence-charge deviations from electrical neutrality induced by Mo6+ → Mo4+. These oxygen-vacancy defects act as active sites for capturing water molecules and activating the H–O–H bond to produce protons for hydrogen generation. The heterovalent Mo6+/Mo4+ states act as photogenerated electron hosts to hop fast between Mo6+ and Mo4+, facilitating efficient electron transfer for the PHER. The hybridization between S 3p and O 2p orbitals improves the stability of continuous PHER. The hydrazine-regulated Mo/S-BiOBr-3 with an optimal n(Mo4+)/n(Mo4+ + Mo6+) ratio and abundant oxygen vacancy defects exhibit an excellent PHER activity of 710.5 μmol h−1 at a catalyst weight of 50 mg and an apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 13.9% at 420 nm. After six recycles, the H2 yield of Mo/S-BiOBr-3 decreased by only about 3.5%, indicating its good stability and durability. This work provides a practical approach to using bismuth-based oxyhalides in the PHER.

Use of 3D photocatalytic reactor has been widely explored for development of efficient photocatalytic systems. In the present study, a bionic palisade cells BiOBr/Sr 2 Nb 2 O 7 /Al 6 Si 2 O 13 photocatalytic reactor with high strength was prepared through combination of 3D printing technology and solvothermal method. The carefully designed and optimized bionic palisade cell structure exhibited a periodic porous structure with high surface area. The controllable periodic structure effectively regulated the internal photon transfer and mass transfer. Photon transfer ensured that light is fully scattered within the structure, which improved light utilization. High mass transfer ensured smooth flow of reactant inside the structure, which increased reactant adsorption on the surface of photocatalysts. The interface electric field of the BiOBr/Sr 2 Nb 2 O 7 p-n heterojunction effectively separated the photogenerated electrons and holes. The BOB/SNO/ASO structure had high photocatalytic CO 2 reduction performance under the simulated sunlight. The CO yield for the reaction was 13.68 μmol/g/h, whereas that of CH 4 yield was 6.37 μmol/g/h. Therefore, the findings of the present study provide a basis for design and preparation of high-performance 3D photocatalytic reactors.

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) poses considerable environmental and health hazards owing to its high solubility and mobility. Therefore, developing highly sensitive detection methods for Cr(VI) is essential. In this work, a multifunctional graphene quantum dots/bismuth oxybromide/graphitic carbon nitride (GQDs/BiOBr/g-C 3 N 4 ) fluorescent probe with excellent detection and removal capabilities was synthesized through integrated hydrothermal treatment, calcination, and coprecipitation. Optimization studies showed that maximum sensitivity was achieved at pH 7.5, a probe concentration of 2.5 mg/L, and a reaction time of 20 min. Cr(VI) induced selective fluorescence quenching at 436 nm, displaying a linear response (R 2 = 0.966) over the range of 0–200 μmol/L, with a detection limit of 24.84 μmol/L. The probe maintained > 90 % fluorescence stability under UV irradiation (365 nm, 180 min), high ionic strength (0.1 mol/L NaCl), and in the presence of various interferents (10 common metal ions and non-fluorescent dyes). Analysis of the nonlinear Stern–Volmer plot, EDTA-2Na-mediated fluorescence recovery, and lifetime measurements suggests a static quenching mechanism, in which the excited-state electrons of GQDs/BiOBr/g-C 3 N 4 interact with Cr(VI), driving a nonradiative complexation process. This study demonstrates a dual-functional material capable of simultaneous Cr(VI) detection and removal, providing a practical platform for environmental monitoring.

In this work, we presented a versatile “one-stone-two-birds” strategy to directly introduce the imprinted cavities into BiOBr/polydopamine composite (BD-MIP) for selective removal of target contaminants from water. BD-MIP exhibited a superior adsorption capacity which is 3.49-times higher than that of the non-imprinted composite, due to the imprinted cavities in polydopamine . BD-MIP showed an improved photogenerated carriers’ behavior, with a superior photodegradation rate of 96.6% in 30 min, excellent selectivity with coefficients above 2.53, and good reusability. All imprinted composites, including BD-MIPs for different templates and MIPs in different BiOBr-based composites, demonstrated greater degradation efficiency than their corresponding non-imprinted composites. This work suggests that the proposed strategy is versatile for selective removal of contaminants, offering flexibility with BiOBr/composites and confirming its potential as an intelligent, eco-friendly, and adjustable method for contaminant removal from water.

The integration of photo-Fenton catalysis couple oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) has shown significant advantages in industrial water-pollution treatment. In this work, a ternary heterojunction catalyst (Ag@FeCo 2 O 4 /Defective-BiOBr, AFB) with rich oxygen vacancies (OVs) was developed by integrating defect engineering, Z-scheme heterojunction, and Ag surface plasmon for light/dark dual-mode pollutants degradation. A unique “three-channel” electron transfer mechanism was designed for the first time, enabling the enhanced electron migration dynamics. The density functional theory (DFT) theoretical calculation revealed that Fe/Co diatomic doping structure and OVs significantly reduced the H 2 O 2 activation energy, facilitating the radical formation. Under light irradiation, AFB exhibited efficient degradation (98.5 %, 40 min, pH = 3.0) of real-industrial pollutants driven by photo-Fenton degradation. Even in dark condition, AFB also showed the dark degradation capability, enabling 89.5 % degradation by Ag-catalyzed oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Benefiting from this, AFB showed features of efficient degradation capability, wide applicability (light/dark dual-mode, pH = 3.0 ∼ 9.0), and full-day operation ability. Significantly, stability tests collectively indicated excellent stability in structure and environment resistance, as high as stable regeneration (over 90 % efficiency after five recycles), further supporting its potential in real system. This work provided a unique design and mechanistic insights of new material paradigm in sustainable AOP environment remediation, and supported for the self-adaptive response removal of challenging pollutions.

In recent decades, the overuse and misuse of antibiotics have caused serious harm to aquatic ecosystems . This work successfully designed a unique recyclable WO 3 /NiFe 2 O 4 /BiOBr (WNB) composite with dual Z-scheme heterojunction to degrade levofloxacin (LEV) in aqueous solution. The results indicated that the as-prepared WNB composite displayed the greatest sonocatalytic activity for LEV degradation. In particular, WNB showed the highest LEV (at 10 mg/L) removal efficiency (97.97 %) within 75 min under ultrasonic irradiation. The significantly enhanced catalytic activity of WNB was attributed to the unique dual Z-scheme structure, which makes it easier for the transfer and the spatial separation of photo-generated electron-hole (e − -h + ) pairs, and dramatically increases the carrier lifespan. Furthermore, the ternary composite comprises three different semiconductors from narrow to broad bandgap, which are suitable for harvesting full-spectrum light. The recycle experiments demonstrated the catalyst's excellent sonocatalytic stability and easy recovery, which is attributed to its magnetic property. Furthermore, based on the intermediates identified during the degradation process, a potential mechanism and pathway for LEV degradation were presented. This work provides a unique perspective on designing efficient sonocatalysts for environmental remediation.

A remediation strategy for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soil was proposed that combined soil washing (SW) and photocatalytic oxidation. In this study, naphthalene (2-ring Nap), phenanthrene (3-ring PHE), and pyrene (4-ring Pyr) served as model pollutants. We assessed the efficacy of Triton X-100 (TX-100) in desorbing PAHs from contaminated soil and its impact on subsequent photocatalytic degradation. TX-100 achieved desorption efficiencies of 72.1% for Nap, 63.3% for PHE, and 52.1% for Pyr during SW. The desorption process of PAHs from soil showed strong closely dependent on TX-100 concentration. Furthermore, a BiOBr/g-C 3 N 4 -30% (BOB/CN-30%) photocatalyst was employed to decompose PAHs in both synthetic and real SW effluents. Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy confirmed the generation of active species (h + , OH, and O 2 − ) in the BOB/CN-30% system. Based on the photocatalytic treatment of PAHs in the synthetic SW effluent, the reactivity impact of TX-100 on PAH degradation by BOB/CN-30% depended on the TX-100 concentration. Optimal TX-100 levels enhanced PAH solubilization and decomposition, whereas excessive concentrations formed dense micelles that obstructed PAH degradation. Moreover, the coupled system exhibited efficient recirculation in real SW tests, underscoring its potential as a remediation option for PAHs-contaminated soils.

Food allergies have become a nonnegligible food safety issue, and milk allergies are one of the most common food allergies, that has attracted large consumer attention. In this work, a novel label-free photoelectrochemical (PEC) immunosensor for the detection of the allergen β-lactoglobulin (β-LG) in dairy products was designed that used the specific recognition of allergen β-LG and antibodies in dairy products in combination with biosensing technology . Here, Ag 2 S-sensitized spindle-shaped BiVO 4 /BiOBr heterojunction was fixed on the surface of the ITO electrode as an excellent photoactive substrate and effectively improved the photocurrent responses and sensitivity. Thioglycolic acid (TGA) was used as a linker to immobilize the β-LG antibody on the surface of the electrode. The photocurrent was detected at different antigen concentrations, which realized the quantitative testing of β-LG. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the PEC immunosensor proved an ideal linear relationship ranging from 10 pg/mL to 100 ng/mL, with a low detection limit of 3.7 pg/mL. The designed immunosensor showed good stability, a wide linear range, high sensitivity and good reproducibility and could be used for the detection of actual samples. The PEC immunosensor had a strong ability to specifically recognize β-LG, which was not affected by other proteins in the milk without pretreatment . Meanwhile, the developed immunosensor provided a promising PEC detection platform and reference idea for the detection of other proteins in milk.

A series of environmental-friendly and cost-effective 0D/2D/2D ZnFe 2 O 4 /Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 /BiOBr double Z-scheme heterojunctions (abbreviated as xZnCB) were fabricated by a hydrothermal method using an electrostatic self-assembly strategy. The removal efficiencies toward tetracycline (TC), oxytetracycline (OTC), and doxycycline (DOX) were 93%, 90.1%, and 89.4% in 10ZnCB/sunlight/permonosulfate (PMS) systems within 20 min, and the degradation rate constants of 10ZnCB were 5.7–8.2 times higher than those of ZnFe 2 O 4 and 2.6–2.9 times higher than those of Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 /BiOBr (CB) under the same conditions. XPS valence band spectra, quenching experiments, EPR measurements, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated the existence of the double Z-scheme heterojunctions. The coexistence of radical and non-radical pathways caused by photocatalytic and non-photocatalytic degradation mechanisms was also elucidated. PMS was effectively activated by a photoinduced e − , · O 2 − , and Fe(II)/Fe(III) pathway, and active species including · O 2 − , 1 O 2 , SO 4 · − , · OH, and h + participated in the catalytic processes. Unexpectedly, 1 O 2 , and · OH were determined to be the primary species during the degradation processes instead of SO 4 · − . Recycling experiments, metal leaching measurements, and TC degradation experiments in the secondary effluent demonstrated the excellent catalytic and structural properties of these xZnCB hybrid materials.

Facile preparation of novel catalysts which can effectively activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) under visible light is of great significance for rapid degradation of refractory organic chemicals in water. Herein, one-step solvothermal process was introduced to prepare carbon nanofiber incorporated bismuth oxybromide (BiOBr/SCF) composites, in which commercial wood flour was in-situ converted to carbon fiber with graphitic structure and incorporated with BiOBr via the process. At the existence of PMS, the prepared composites exhibited prominent visible-light photocatalytic degradation capability towards sulfadiazine (SDZ) with satisfying adaptability and recyclability. Specifically, the apparent pseudo-first order kinetic constant of BiOBr/SCF-180/PMS/visible light system (0.0724 min −1 ) exceeded those of both BiOBr/SCF-180/PMS (0.0462 min −1 ) and BiOBr/SCF-180/visible light (0.0111 min −1 ) systems. An integrated mechanism in the BiOBr/SCF/PMS/visible light system was elucidated through comparing the mechanisms amongst photo-oxidation, chemical oxidation and photo-chemical oxidation systems, in which photo-induced electron and hole, Bi 3+ /Bi 5+ redox couple, graphitic structure and oxygen functional groups in the SCF all participated in the generation and conversion of the active species. The possible SDZ degradation pathway was also proposed. This work demonstrates a novel strategy to prepare high-efficient catalysts in the field of wastewater treatment.

The upsurge of interest in the emergence of photocatalytic fuel cell systems (PFC) presents an efficient and environmentally friendly approach to wastewater treatment. In this work, a Z-scheme coupled with an S-scheme heterojunction electrode was used in the PFC, utilizing TiO 2 /GO/g-C 3 N 4 as the photoanode and BiOAc 1– x Br x /BiOBr as the photocathode. We systematically align the band structures between the anode and cathode, which facilitates the electron transfer between the electrodes. Our attempt successfully demonstrates that collaborative power generation facilitates the high efficiency of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) degradation at both electrodes. The photoanode achieved a 94.87 % degradation rate for TC, while the photocathode exhibited a 96.33 % degradation rate after 2 h, surpassing pristine BiOBr and BiOAc by factors of ∼5.3 and ∼3.8, respectively. Furthermore, this work proposed a mechanism for electron generation, transport, and pollutant degradation mechanism in the PFC. Intermediate substances generated during the degradation of TC were analyzed through high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS), while the optimal degradation pathway was confirmed using density functional theory (DFT). The findings of this work establish the feasibility of efficiently degrading pollutants through PFC treatment, introducing a novel system where various heterojunctions in bipolar materials collaborate with photocatalysis to effectively generate electricity and enhance pollutant removal.

Low solubility and slow diffusion of nitrogen (N 2 ) in water are significant impediments for enhancing the efficiency of fixation nitrogen into ammonia (NH 3 ). Herein, we have prepared bio-inspired hierarchical assembly of carbonized loofah sponge@BiOBr-OV/Au (CL@BiOBr-OV/Au) to improve diffusion of nitrogen by immobilization of hydrophilic BiOBr-OV/Au onto hydrophobic CL sponge. The hydrophobic CL sponge provides an optimized directional channel for N 2 diffuse to the triphase interface N 2 (gas)-H 2 O (liquid)-BiOBr-OV/Au (solid), which supplies generous N 2 for the photocatalytic reaction and replaces the slow diffusion of N 2 through the liquid phase . Continuous delivery of N 2 can effectively capture generated electrons , thereby preventing the recombination of generated electron-hole and promoting N 2 activation. The modification of AuNPs can broaden the photoresponse range of BiOBr-OV, increase oxygen vacancies concentration and enhance N 2 adsorption and activation. CL@BiOBr-OV/Au shows an impressive in nitrogen fixation performance with high selectivity and recyclability of 2.64 mmol·g cat −1 ·h −1 , that is 10.2 and 8.0 times compared to CL@BiOBr-OV and BiOBr-OV/Au, respectively. Our work affords a convenient method for the construction of bio-inspired triphase catalysts with a directional N 2 transport channel to enhance the efficiency of nitrogen fixation, which also holds great promise for the application in other reactions involving gas consumption.
