Amorphous metal-organic frameworks loaded on BiVO4 photoanodes with unique internal metal-like structure for promoting photoelectrochemical water splitting

Weihao Bai,Hao Li,Gang Peng,Jinnan Wang,Aimin Li,Philippe François-Xavier Corvini

Although ferrocene (Fc) based Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) can act as oxygen evolution co-catalysts (OECs) for improvement of catalytic reactivity, the poor conductivity and lack of highly active metal sites limit its further application in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. Herein, the amorphous NiFc-MOF was grafted on BiVO 4 photoanode (BiVO 4 @ a NiFc-MOFs) for efficient PEC water splitting. This novel BiVO 4 @ a NiFc-MOFs exhibits high current density of 4.34 mA cm −2 at 1.23 V RHE and relative low onset potential of 0.223 V RHE . The subsequent characterizations demonstrate that Ni species with metal-like state in bulk of a NiFc-MOFs form strong metal-support interaction with BiVO 4 , thereby promoting the interfacial charge transfer. Moreover, the surface of a NiFc-MOFs is short-range ordered with abundant coordinatively unsaturated Ni sites, creating a more favorable pathway for oxygen evolution reaction from thermodynamics. This work provides a simple method to design photoanodes with efficient OECs of amorphous MOFs for feasible PEC water splitting application.

Synergistic photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline by Fe(II)/PMS and g-C3N5/BiVO4 S-scheme heterojunction: Mechanism and performance

Liu Ouyang,Huihu Wang,Lizhong Duan,Jingle Zhang,Shenghao Jiang,Yu Xiong,Chenhuinan Wei,Xing Xiang,Yun Zhao,Qianyu Wang

Tetracycline (TC), a widely detected aquatic pollutant, poses significant ecological risks, necessitating the development of effective remediation strategies. Photocatalytic degradation, which converts TC into harmless CO 2 and H 2 O, offers a promising eco-friendly solution. This study successfully synthesized a novel 2D/3D g-C 3 N 5 /BiVO 4 (N-CN/BiVO 4 ) S-scheme heterojunction via a hydrothermal method. The optimized 5 % N-CN/BiVO 4 exhibited exceptional performance in activating the Fe 2+ /PMS system under visible light, achieving a 96.8 % TC removal efficiency with an apparent rate constant 4.4 times higher than that of BiVO 4 . Mechanistic studies, including ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) and valence band X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (VB-XPS), confirmed the S-scheme interfacial charge transfer pathway. Furthermore, radical quenching experiments revealed that the enhanced photocatalytic activity originated from the synergistic contribution of multiple reactive species ( OH, SO 4 − , O 2 − , h + , and 1 O 2 ), validating both the efficient activation of Fe 2+ /PMS and the proposed S-scheme charge transfer mechanism. This work presents an innovative approach for high-performance pollutant degradation by coupling an S-scheme heterojunction with the Fe 2+ /PMS activation system.

Fe-doped Ni nanocrystals as a cocatalyst for efficient BiVO4 photoanode: Mechanism insights into Fe-accelerated in-situ reconstruction

Xing Cao,Qianxi Dang,Huanhui Chen,Yubin Zhao,Ya Liu,Junrong Zeng,Qing Ma,Liubiao Zhong,Dayou Wang,Yejun Qiu

To address the severe carrier recombination in BiVO 4 -based Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting, we developed Fe-doped Ni nanocrystals (Fe:Ni NCs) through an organic liquid phase synthesis as an efficient cocatalyst. Through a dip-coating and annealing modification process, the optimized Fe:Ni/BiVO 4 photoanode achieved a remarkable photocurrent density of 4.72 mA/cm 2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE, representing a 4.07-fold enhancement over pristine BiVO 4 . In-situ Raman characterization revealed that Fe:Ni NCs on BiVO 4 underwent in-situ surface reconstruction to form a unique Fe:Ni@Fe:NiOOH core–shell structure during PEC reaction. The presence of Fe accelerated the conversion of Ni to active NiOOH at lower potential (0.25 V vs. RHE) compared to pure Ni NCs modified BiVO 4 photoanode (0.30 V vs. RHE). Mechanistic studies identified a dual activation pathway involving both applied potential and BiVO 4 valence band oxidation. Meanwhile, Fe:Ni NCs cores with high conductivity accelerated the migration and accumulation of holes into Fe:NiOOH shells, resulting in improved carrier injection efficiency and water oxidation kinetics. This work not only elucidates fundamental differences between PEC and electrocatalytic water splitting mechanisms but also provides a reference for designing high-performance PEC photoanodes.

Architecture of a Long-Wavelength Visible–Light–Driven N-Doped WO3/BiVO4 Heterojunction Structure for Highly Efficient Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

Dong Li,Siyu Tian,Qiuhua Qian,Caiyun Gao,Hongfang Shen,Fei Han

A nitrogen-doped tungsten oxide/BiVO4 (N-WO3/BiVO4) heterojunction structure was obtained utilizing ammonium paratungstate as the nitrogen source and Bi(NO3)3·5H2O as the bismuth source, exhibiting promising photoelectrochemical (PEC) performances and effectively obtaining a long photoresponse range into the visible light region. Notably, the UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra of N-WO3/BiVO4 (566 nm, 2.19 eV) exhibited a notable red shift of the absorption edge compared to that of WO3/BiVO4 (516 nm, 2.47 eV). The N-WO3/BiVO4 photoanode demonstrated an excellent photocurrent density of 0.78 mA cm–2 at 0.68 V vs Ag/AgCl, which surpassed those of the WO3/BiVO4 (0.20 mA cm–2), pure WO3 (0.25 mA cm–2), and pure BiVO4 (0.03 mA cm–2) photoelectrodes. The improvement of the PEC performances was primarily due to the synergy of N doping and the involved heterojunction structure, suggesting that N doping increased the Vis-light response and the heterojunction structure promoted charge separation to improve the lifetime of photoinduced carriers.

Ni3B modified BiVO4 photoanodes for enhanced photoelectrochemical water splitting: The key role of Ni3B on reducing the water oxidation barrier

Xue Kehui,Zhu Haifeng,Zhao Xingyu,Rodrigues Liana Alvares,Reddy D. Amaranatha,Zhang Yaping,Yu Lianqing

Bismuth vanadate (BiVO 4 , BVO) as a promising photoelectrode has been received great attention for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. However, the slow oxidation kinetics on the surface of BiVO 4 limited the PEC water splitting efficiency. Herein, nickel boride (Ni 3 B, NB) nanoparticles, generally used in electrocatalytic field material, were modified on the surface of BiVO 4 photoelectrode as an efficient cocatalyst to accelerate the oxygen evolution reaction. The as-prepared BVO-NB-5P photoelectrode exhibits a remarkable photocurrent density of 1.47 mA·cm −2 at 1.23 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) under air mass (AM) 1.5 G illumination, which is about 2.8 times higher than the bare BiVO 4 photoelectrode, and its water splitting rate is 11.3 times higher than bare BiVO 4 . The PEC studies reveal that the spin coated Ni 3 B crystal cocatalyst could effectively reduce the water oxidation barrier, and improve the surface charge injection efficiency to 94%, which could boost the photogenerated holes reaction to enhance the PEC performance of BiVO 4 photoelectrode.

Precise control of the energy level of conduction band of bismuth vanadate BiVO4 via element doping at the vanadium site

Dusu Wen,Xing Xing,Yuanman Wang

In this study, BiV 1- x M x O 4 (M = Sc, Ti, W, Mo; x  = 0, 0.005, 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.05, 0.07, 0.10) samples with monoclinic structure were successfully synthesized by the conventional solid state reaction method, and the doping effects on the crystal structure, band structure and optical properties were investigated. XRD and Rietveld refinement results suggested the formation of solid solutions with monoclinic structure in low concentration range. UV–vis diffuse reflectance, XPS and VBXPS results revealed that the band structure of BiVO 4 could be adjusted by doping elements with different electronegativities into V site. It is found that the energy level of CBM raised by doping Sc and Ti which have lower electronegativities than V, and the energy level of CBM decreased by doping W and Mo which have higher electronegativities than V.

Synergistic effect of type-II heterojunction and cocatalyst loading on BiVO4-based photoanode for enhanced photoelectrochemical water splitting H2 evolution

Tie Zhou,Zehang Zhao,Xue Deng,Jing Xie,Bing Lv,Yangfang Liao,Wenzhong Wang

The combination of band structure and cocatalyst loading can greatly improve photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting H 2 generation of the semiconductor photoanodes. This work reports the design and construction of a novel ternary BiVO 4 /FeVO 4 /FeOOH nanoporous film (NPF) photoanode based on BiVO 4 NPF modified with FeVO 4 nanoparticles (NPs) and FeOOH nanoneedles (NNs). As revealed by UV–vis absorption spectra, the BiVO 4 /FeVO 4 /FeOOH NPF photoanode displays good light-harvesting efficiency in the range of 300–800 nm. Electrochemical measurements and photoluminescence spectroscopy further demonstrate that the modification of FeVO 4 NPs and FeOOH NNs significantly enhances both the bulk charge separation efficiency and surface charge injection efficiency of the BiVO 4 NPF photoanode due to the Type-II band alignment established at the interface between BiVO 4 and FeVO 4 as well as cocatalyst action of FeOOH. The BiVO 4 /FeVO 4 /FeOOH NPF exhibits significantly enhanced PEC water splitting performance and achieves a H 2 evolution rate of 40.3 μmol cm −2  h −1 , which is 2.25 times and 13 times higher than that of BiVO 4 /FeVO 4 and pure BiVO 4 NPF photoanodes, respectively. This work presents a viable strategy for efficient PEC water splitting by synergistically optimizing band structure and cocatalysts.

Highly flexible and robust light-addressable photoelectrochemical sensor based on BiVO4-MWCNTs for enzyme-free high-throughput detection of sweeteners

Jiahui Zhang,Chen Zhan,Min Liu,Chengguo Hu

On-site high-throughput photoelectrochemical (PEC) detection of sweeteners in foods and drinks by cost-effective portable devices is highly desirable for food safety and health management. However, current high-throughput PEC sensors usually suffer from high costs, complex fabrication processes, or poor mechanical properties. Here, a highly flexible and robust light-addressable PEC sensor for the enzyme-free high-throughput detection of sweeteners using single-channel electrochemical analyzers is reported. This solar cell-type sensor consists of a bismuth vanadate-multi-walled carbon nanotubes (BiVO 4 -MWCNTs) photoanode and a silver/silver chloride (Ag/AgCl) cathode. Amongst these electrode materials, BiVO 4 exhibits strong photochemical oxidation capacity towards various sugar and sugar substitute sweeteners, MWCNTs enhance the film-formation ability and the photo-induced electron transfer process of BiVO 4 , while Ag/AgCl greatly simplifies the structure of the sensor and promotes its PEC response by efficient cathodic compensation reaction. The resulting PEC sensor has good mechanical and PEC properties, and allows the rapid high-throughput detection of typical sweeteners such as glucose (GLU) and erythritol (ERY) with a calibration range of 10–240 mg/L. Moreover, the detection throughput of the sensor can be easily extended by connecting a series of sensors in parallel. The present work thus establishes a portable and flexible PEC platform for the rapid high-throughput detection of sweeteners in foods and drinks.

Metallic Bi-decorated BiVO4 nanosheets enabling improved photoelectrochemical detection of trace chlorpyrifos under visible light through localized surface plasmon resonance

Feng Luping,Li Xinfeng,Wang Jianghong,Chen Enjun,Fan Yujie,Jin Leyao,Tang Peisong,Zhang Lixiang

A visible-light-powered photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor was devised for chlorpyrifos (CPs) determination  using metallic Bi-decorated BiVO 4 nanosheets (Bi@BiVO 4 NSs) with localized surface plasmon resonance (SPR) synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal method. It was observed that Bi@BiVO 4 -based PEC sensors exhibit significantly enhanced PEC responses over pristine BiVO 4 due to the collaborative effect of metallic Bi’s SPR phenomenon and BiVO 4 ’s visible-light-driven properties. Furthermore, the addition of CPs selectively suppresses the photocurrent signal of the sensor due to the in-situ formation of Bi-CPs complexes, which hindered electron transfer through specific chelation reactions between Bi sites and CPs. The designed PEC sensor achieved high-sensitivity detection of CPs, with a linear concentration range from 0.02 to 20 ppb and a detection limit of  0.01 ppb. These attributes  may offer a blueprint for developing diverse PEC sensing systems to monitor various environmental pesticide contaminants like CPs by synergistic integration of visible-light-responsive BiVO 4 and SPR-active metallic Bi. Bi-based semiconductors composites of BiVO4 quantum dots decorated Bi12TiO20 via in-suit growth with ultrasound for enhancing photocatalytic performance

Tao Wang,Xiqing Liu,Donglai Han,Changchang Ma,Yang Liu,Pengwei Huo,Yongsheng Yan

In this work, two Bi-based semiconductors composites was synthesized through the BiVO 4 quantum dots (BVO QDs) was grown on the Bi 12 TiO 20 (BTO) via an in-suit growth with the ultrasonic method, which was more stability and evenly dispersed. As expected, the BVO-BTO composites exhibited increased visible-light-driven photocatalytic performance for photo-degradation due to the advantages of BVO QDs. Moreover, the possible mechanism of BVO-BTO composites was studied by trapping experiment, photocurrent, UV–vis and so on. The results demonstrated that the BVO QDs can widen the light response range to visible region and hasten the charge transfer and separation. Thus, the photocatalytic activity was enhanced through the BVO QDs decorated on BTO, which provided a new idea for designing Bi-based materials.

Co(OH)2/BiVO4 photoanode in tandem with a carbon-based perovskite solar cell for solar-driven overall water splitting

Xitao Li,Meilin Jia,Yanting Lu,Nan Li,Yan-Zhen Zheng,Xia Tao,Meilan Huang

BiVO 4 as a promising candidate photoanode material for PEC water splitting has been paid much attention due to its low cost, nontoxicity, high stability and narrow band gap energy of 2.4 eV. However, owing to its short carrier diffusion length and poor charge separation consequence, the achieved efficiency of the BiVO 4 photoanode is still limited. Herein, we addressed this issue by loading Co(OH) 2 onto as-prepared BiVO 4 to fabricate Co(OH) 2 /BiVO 4 heterojunction photoanode via a simple solution impregnation method, in which Co(OH) 2 as a modifier can increase interface charge separation efficiency from 44% of BiVO 4 to 92% of Co(OH) 2 /BiVO 4 . As a result, the water-splitting photocurrent density was significantly enhanced from 1.57 mA/cm 2 of BiVO 4 to 4.52 mA/cm 2 of Co(OH) 2 /BiVO 4 at 1.23 V vs. RHE under 1-sun illumination. Further, the Co(OH) 2 /BiVO 4 photoanode was assembled in tandem with a single sealed carbon-based PSC , and the resulting PV-PEC device showed a high STH efficiency of 4.6% and decent stability. The produced H 2 and O 2 gases were determined as ∼68 μmol/cm 2 /h and ∼34 μmol/cm 2 /h, respectively, corresponding to the 2:1 ratio of water splitting reaction with a faradaic efficiency of ∼98%.

Accelerating surface reaction kinetics and enhancing bulk and surface charge separation in Ag-modified BiVO4 photoanode for photoelectrochemical water splitting

Quan Luo,Jiayi Wang,Baixin Zhang,Qiaoqiao Wei,Jiahao Chen,Lijuan Wang,Xiaolu Wang,Wenzhong Wang

The light collection ability, surface oxidation reaction kinetics, bulk charge carrier separation efficiency, and surface charge injection efficiency play a crucial role in hydrogen production through solar-driven water splitting of semiconductor photoanodes in photoelectrochemical (PEC) system. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of plasmonic metals exhibits a potential to simultaneously boost the aforementioned performances of semiconductor photoanodes. Herein, the SPR effect of plasmonic Ag nanoparticles is exploited to augment PEC performance of BiVO 4 photoanode. The modification and SPR effect of Ag nanoparticles not only substantially accelerates the reaction kinetics of surface water oxidation but also enhances surface charge injection and bulk charge separation efficiencies of BiVO 4 nanostructure photoanode, leading to 361% enhancement in injection efficiency of surface charges and 126% enhancement in separation efficiency of bulk charges compared with those of pristine BiVO 4 photoanode. As a result, the optimized BiVO 4 /Ag nanostructure photoanode exhibits significantly enhanced PEC performance in Na 2 SO 4 electrolyte without sacrificial agent, and achieves a photocurrent density of 2.3 mA cm −2 at 1.23 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode, 5 times of unmodified BiVO 4 nanostructure photoanode. This wok offers valuable insights into boosting PEC performance of wide bandgap semiconductor photoanodes through utilizing SPR effect of metals to simultaneously improve surface oxidation reaction kinetics, bulk charge separation and surface charge injection.
