In this work, a novel Ca-Fe-Si-S composite was prepared from thermal desorption residue through FeSO 4 impregnation-pyrolysis. The characteristics and modification process of the composite were specified through a series of analytical methods. And stabilization experiments were conducted to investigate the performance of prepared materials. The optimal Ca–Fe–Si–S composite was obtained at impregnation ratio of 10%, pyrolysis temperature of 900℃ and pyrolysis time of 60 min. The modification process included the dissolution of calcium hydroxide, the formation of gypsum and ferrous silicate, the dehydration of gypsum, the reduction decomposition of calcium sulfate, the decomposition of calcium carbonate and the solid reaction at high temperature. The obtained optimal Ca–Fe–Si–S composite was a multifunctional material mainly composed of high contents of Ca, Fe, Si, S, which corresponding to FeS, CaS, Ca 2 SiO 4 , Ca 3 Al 2 (SiO 4 ) 3 , Ca 3 Fe 2 (SiO 4 ) 3 , Ca 5 (SiO 4 ) 2 SO 4 . The application of 5% optimal Ca–Fe–Si–S composite successfully lowed the leaching concentrations of As, Zn, Cu, Cd in arsenic slag to meet the discharging standard. Meanwhile, the non-specifically bound and specifically bound of As totally decreased by 3.72%, and the acid extractable species of Zn, Cu, Cd reduced by 11.20%, 29.37%, 2.76% respectively. The distribution of stable species for heavy metals significantly increased as united results of surface complexation, chemical precipitation and ion/anion exchange reactions between the prepared composite and heavy metals. The findings of this research provide an effective material for the simultaneous stabilization of multiple heavy metals.

Sewage sludge treatment remains a critical environmental challenge due to its high moisture content and heavy metal contamination. The Fe 2+ /Ca(ClO) 2 /tannic acid (TA) combined conditioning has shown great performances on sludge dewatering, but its influence on heavy metal removal and risk assessment was unclear. In this study the speciation transformation of heavy metals and related mechanisms were comprehensively investigated. The results demonstrated that the sludge conditioning simultaneously enhanced sludge dewatering and promoted heavy metal removal under optimized conditions. Notably, Zn, Cd, and Ni were effectively removed from the sludge solid phase, with removal efficiencies of 39.12 %, 52.49 %, and 30.86 %, respectively. Moreover, the conditioning significantly reduced the ecological risk posed by heavy metals, as indicated by a marked decrease in comprehensive risk index from high to medium levels. The mechanisms involved in the combined effects of oxidation, acidification, and ion binding. Oxidation disrupted extracellular polymeric substance structure, while acidification increased surface positivity, enhancing heavy metal desorption. The Fe 2+ /Ca 2+ competed with heavy metals for binding sites. Additionally, pH reduction and TA chelation further facilitated the transfer of heavy metals into the liquid phase. As a result, the potential mobility index for heavy metals Zn, Cd, Ni, Hg, and As decreased by 33.93 %, 35.98 %, 21.40 %, 26.76 %, and 50.57 %, respectively. This study provides a promising strategy for the safe and resource-efficient utilization of sewage sludge.

In light of the widespread adoption of novel energy sources, there is a pressing need for the rapid development of long-term energy storage technologies. While most existing energy storage technologies are prohibitively expensive, the thermochemical energy storage (TCES) system based on CaO/Ca(OH)₂ offers a high storage density of 1400 kJ/kg, low costs, and excellent cycle stability. The choice of expanded graphite (EG) as the matrix is based on its outstanding thermal conductivity and rich microstructure, which enhance heat and mass transfer. This study focuses on the thermochemical properties of Ca(OH)₂ doped by expanded graphite with stable morphology. Five samples with EG contents were synthesized, and characterized with regard to their microstructures, and their thermal and physical properties examined. Additionally, a reaction kinetic analysis of the thermal decomposition process was conducted. The results indicate that the composite with 9 % EG content stands out as the optimal thermal storage material, exhibiting a thermal conductivity of 2.5 W/(m·K), almost three times that of pure material. The activation energy of the composite was calculated to be 166.9 kJ/mol and the pre-exponential factor is 5.5 × 10 11 1/s which is two orders of magnitude higher than the pure. Furthermore, the composite demonstrated exceptional stability during cyclic performance tests, maintaining a conversion rate of 70 % after 10 cycles, confirming its reliability. In conclusion, this research presents a novel approach for the large-scale, low-cost application of TCES in CaO/Ca(OH)₂ systems.

Limited knowledge regarding the controlled preparation of aromatic hydrocarbons (AHs) via catalytic pyrolysis of individual organic components hinders high yields of lignocellulosic biomass-based AHs. This report describes a systematic investigation of AHs generation following catalytic pyrolysis of organic components referring to cellulose, xylan, and lignin. Results show that in a programmed-heating process (20 °C/min), a (Ca-Fe)/HZSM-5 catalyst promoted the degradation of cellulose, xylan, and lignin with respective increment ratios of 24.56 %, 17.29 % and 19.45 %, and significantly increased the release of benzene during the pyrolysis of cellulose and xylan. In a fast-heating process (20 °C/ms), Ca-Fe alone presented a positive effect on bio-oil yield from cellulose, whereas HZSM-5 and (Ca-Fe)/HZSM-5 afforded high bio-oil yields from all three components. Notably, Ca-Fe and HZSM-5 exhibited synergistic effects on the bio-oil and AHs yields following cellulose pyrolysis, and on AHs yield following xylan pyrolysis. Alcohols, aldehydes, and furans were suitable precursors for generating AHs via pyrolysis of both cellulose and xylan. Lignin conversion to AHs involved various potential reaction pathways, including dehydration-deoxygenation-aromatization and dehydration-hydrodeoxygenation. The orders of (Ca-Fe)/HZSM-5 catalyzed pyrolysis of individual components towards AHs generation were xylan > cellulose > lignin. The presence of Ca-Fe particles inhibited deactivation of HZSM-5 in pyrolysis of a cellulose/xylan/lignin mixture.

Despite the strict management of eutrophic waters globally, the release of phosphorus (P) from sediments maintains the eutrophic state of water bodies and poses a serious challenge to their management. Ca/Fe–LDH was synthesized with natural zeolite (NZ) by using a co-precipitation method (denoted as CFL-Z) to solve this problem. Results showed that Ca/Fe–LDH was successfully loaded onto the surface and inside the pores of NZ. The maximum P adsorption capacity value of CFL-Z was 46.7 mg/g under the mechanisms of electrostatic attraction, ligand exchange, and ion exchange. In incubation experiments, the addition of 6 % CFL-Z into P-contaminated sediments reduced P concentrations in overlying and interstitial water to 0.013 (97.3 % reduction) and 0.358 (82.1 % reduction) mg/L, respectively. In addition, unstable P forms (NH 4 Cl-P and BD-P) in sediments were converted into stable P forms (HCl-P and Res-P, respectively). Subsequent long-term anoxic experiments showed that CFL-Z capping sediments exhibited better inhibition of sediment P release compared with CFL-Z amendment sediments and was efficient and stable. Microbial community analysis showed that CFL-Z amendment and capping reshaped the microbial community structure, and different functional bacteria influenced the stability of sediment P. This work showed that CFL-Z overlays were considered to have potential applications in sediment P fixation, providing a new way to improve the P-binding capacity of natural mineral-like materials and resolve P-contaminated sediments.

A simple and universal technique of the combination of uniaxial electrospinning with subsequent peculiar dual-crucible fluorination technology is innovatively designed and used to construct metallic fluorides yolk-shell nanofibers (YSNFs) and yolk-shell nanobelts (YSNBs) directly for the first time. As a case study, Yb 3+ /Er 3+ co-doped alkaline earth metal fluoride (BaF 2 , SrF 2 and CaF 2 ) as core layer and SiO 2 as shell layer are applied to construct the yolk-shell one-dimensional nanostructures . Under the optimum calcination temperature (600 °C) and time (5 h), the obtained MF 2 :Yb 3+ , Er 3+ /SiO 2 (M=Ba, Sr, Ca) samples are of pure cubic phase, and display the yolk-shell nanofibers and yolk-shell nanobelts with good size uniformity and green up-converting fluorescence. By HF acid treatment of the samples, it is not only proved that the shell layer is SiO 2 , but also independent core-layer MF 2 :Yb 3+ , Er 3+ (M=Ba, Sr, Ca) nanofibers and nanobelts with good size uniformity and excellent up-conversion luminescence are obtained. Especially, only fluorination process among the halogenation can form such exceptive YSNFs and YSNBs one-dimensional nanostructures , and the formation mechanisms of YSNFs and YSNBs are proposed and verified, and further the novel technique is established. The new technique possesses the merits of simple device and easy operation, large output, well-defined morphology and high preparative success rate of yolk-shell nanofiber and yolk-shell nanobelt, universality to metallic fluorides. The design philosophy and the construction technique for the exceptional yolk-shell one-dimensional nanostructures afford a facile approach for the fabrication of other functional metal fluorides yolk-shell one-dimensional nanostructures.

Tumor-mediated hypoxia resistance severely limits the therapeutic efficacy of conventional platinum-based drugs against oral cancer. Targeting carbonic anhydrase IX (CA IX), which is specifically overexpressed in hypoxic tumor cells, represents an effective strategy to reverse chemoresistance. In this work, a novel CA IX-targeting platinum(II) complex was synthesized using pyridoxal 4-sulfamoylphenylhydrazone as the ligand. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals its stable square-planar coordination geometry in the solid state. Enzymatic assays revealed that the complex exhibited negligible inhibition toward the normal CA II isoform and displayed potent inhibitory activity against CA IX (Ki= 26.5 nM), superior to the ligand and the positive control compound U-104. Molecular docking suggests its stable binding to the active pocket of CA IX. In vitro assays exhibited notable hypoxia-selective cytotoxicity against oral cancer HSC-2 cells, with an IC50value of 3.7 ± 0.2 μM under hypoxic conditions. Mechanistic investigations suggest that the complex may induce oral cancer cell death partly by elevating intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels and activating the mitochondrial-mediated apoptotic pathway. It should be noted that the solution-state behavior, aquation, and hydrolysis of this platinum complex have not been experimentally explored in the present study; thus, the biologically active platinum-containing species remains uncharacterized, and the observed bioactivity cannot be unequivocally assigned to the intact solid-state complex. This study provides new insights and experimental support for the development of hypoxia-responsive platinum-based agents targeting CA IX against oral cancer.

Converting lignocellulosic biomass to syngas represents a promising way to integrate renewable hydrogen and carbon resources into sustainable carbon-neutral energy systems. However, the conventional biomass gasification process typically relies on excessive steam input, resulting in significant energy penalties and CO 2 emissions. This study proposed a novel integrated gasification process for syngas production from straw, featuring the self-reforming of straw volatiles and utilization of process CO 2 , enabled by the cooperation of Ca(OH) 2 and Fe 2 O 3 . The contents of Ca(OH) 2 and Fe 2 O 3 were optimized to direct straw hydrogen into the volatiles and straw carbon into the solid phase during pyrolysis, thereby facilitating subsequent H 2 and CO production. The cooperation of Ca(OH) 2 and Fe 2 O 3 was manifested in two aspects: generating in situ steam for the self-reforming of volatiles into H 2 and promoting the secondary conversion of biochar and process CO 2 into CO. The optimized C0.3F0.2 reached a syngas yield of 19.3 mmol/g straw with a H 2 selectivity of 35.8% and a CO selectivity of 28.0%. 34.8% of process CO 2 was captured and utilized as CO rather than emitted. This work provides a sustainable and eco-friendly way for converting the hydrogen and carbon resources into efficient syngas production and falls in the domain of carbon-neutral energy system development.

Ethylene vinyl alcohol-bayberry anthocyanins-carvacrol (EVOH-BAs-CA) membrane is developed for fruit freshness monitoring and maintaining. • BAs endow the membrane antioxidant activity. • Antibacterial activity of the membrane is from the control released CA. • EVOH-BAs-CA membrane has a reversible transparency response to ethanol exudate. In this study, a visual freshness indicator based on electrospun fibers membrane was fabricated, which relies on ethanol-responsive light transmittance to evaluate fruit freshness. Carvacrol (CA) and bayberry anthocyanins (BAs) were incorporated into ethylene-vinyl alcohol (EVOH) matrix to prepare the composite membrane for bayberry freshness monitoring and preservation. The EVOH-BAs-CA membrane was initially opaque and turned transparent, as ethanol (EtOH) exudates released from spoiled bayberry induced a rapid increase in light transmittance during storage. The membrane showed high sensitivity to ethanol exudates, retaining a transmittance above 60% after 10 reuse cycles. Additionally, the EVOH-BAs-CA membrane exhibits strong antibacterial and antioxidant properties and can approximately prolong the freshness of bayberry for 4 days, which resulted from the effective release of CA and BAs. The implementation of the EVOH-BAs-CA membrane in visual freshness monitoring for bayberry highlights its significant potential within intelligent packaging systems. A Ni–Ca–Al 2 O 3 composite catalysts was developed for synergistic biomass gasification tar cracking and CO 2 fixation. • The 10Ni-Ca-Al catalyst exhibited the optimal catalytic performance, achieving a 139.2% enhancement in H 2 yield. • The catalyst showed good durability, with H 2 yield retaining 81.1% after five cycles. • Mechanistic studies further confirmed the synergistic effects among NiO, CaO, and Al 2 O 3 . Biomass gasification is a promising technology for renewable hydrogen production; however, its practical application is constrained by high tar yield and insufficient hydrogen yield. In this study, Ni-Ca-Al 2 O 3 composite catalysts were prepared and applied in a two-stage fixed-bed gasification system to enhance hydrogen production from biomass gasification through the synergistic effects of tar reforming and in-situ CO 2 adsorption. The influences of catalytic temperature, catalyst dosage, and NiO loading on gas composition, tar conversion, and catalyst stability were systematically investigated. The results show that hydrogen yield gradually increased with rising catalytic temperature. Increasing the catalyst dosage further promoted CO 2 capture and tar cracking, thereby enhancing H 2 production. The incorporation of NiO significantly improved catalytic activity, which was attributed to its acceleration of tar reforming, methane steam reforming, and the water–gas shift reaction. Among the catalysts studied, 10Ni–Ca–Al exhibited the best overall performance. Under optimal conditions (600 °C, 5 g catalyst), the gasification of pear branches resulted in increases of 108.7% in H 2 concentration and 139.2% in H 2 yield compared with the blank experiment, accompanied by a substantial reduction in tar yield to 3.6 g/kg and a tar cracking ratio of 79.7%, with a CO 2 adsorption capacity reaching 170 mg/(g cat). Characterization results confirmed that CaO effectively adsorbed CO 2 to form CaCO 3 , while NiO was reduced to metallic Ni; the synergistic interaction between the two components promoted tar cracking and enhanced H 2 yield. Cyclic stability tests demonstrated that the catalyst maintained good catalytic activity after five regeneration cycles. In summary, the Ni–Ca–Al 2 O 3 catalyst, through the dual-function coupling of tar cracking and in-situ CO 2 adsorption, provides a viable strategy for efficient hydrogen production from biomass gasification.

Modified metal-organic framework (MOF) materials are promising adsorbents for phosphate removal in aquatic environment. Herein, a high-efficiency and eco-friendly La/Ca composite (La/Ca-BTC) was designed by calcining La/Ca MOFs for phosphate adsorption. Batch adsorption experiments showed that La/Ca-BTC-3/1 (La: Ca molar ratio of 3: 1) had an excellent phosphate sorption capacity of 101.01 mg P/g, and could also maintain relatively high adsorption in the range of pH 4–8. Anion coexistence experiments showed that, except for carbonate ions, common anions have little effect on adsorption. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis indicated that oxygen vacancies formed in the La/Ca-BTC, probably by metal doping . The density functional theory (DFT) calculation showed that oxygen vacancies could affect the orbital hybridization energy during phosphate adsorption by changing the state density, reducing the bond energy barrier for phosphate adsorption, thereby enhancing the adsorption effect of La/Ca-BTC. Phosphate adsorbents generally incur severe environmental risk by their gradual release of metal ions due to changes in water quality, especially where there is high natural organic matter (NOM). The DFT calculation further demonstrated that Ca 2+ in the La/Ca-BTC was more inclined to combine with humic acid (HA) than La 3+ . Therefore, due to the introduction of Ca 2+ , La/Ca-BTC exhibited lower La-release in the presence of HA than La-BTC, which could be reduced by about 52.04%. Furthermore, La/Ca-BTC had the potential to simultaneously remove NOM which has important implication for aquatic remediation. These results are of great significance for the development of environmentally friendly phosphate adsorbents.

Titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) has received widespread attention as high stability, low toxicity and costless photocatalyst , but it only exhibits photocatalytic activity under ultraviolet (UV) light. To improve TiO 2 photocatalytic efficiency, Bio-CaCO 3 /WO 3 /TiO 2 /(Ca,Y)F 2 :Tm,Yb was prepared. TiO 2 was combined with upconversion materials, coupled with WO 3 and loaded on oyster shell powder (Bio-CaCO 3 ), which showed that the prepared photocatalyst effectively reduce the band gap of TiO 2 , expand the photoreaction range of the material and avoid agglomeration, thus improving its photocatalytic efficiency and antibacterial efficiency. The photocatalytic degradation efficiency of Bio-CaCO 3 /WO 3 /TiO 2 /(Ca,Y)F 2 :Tm,Yb (50 mg) was 24.32% higher than that of TiO 2 /(Ca,Y)F 2 :Tm,Yb in 90 min. And its antibacterial rates against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) were enhanced by 38.68% and 25.89% compared to TiO 2 /(Ca,Y)F 2 :Tm,Yb, respectively.
