Fragmenting C60 toward enhanced electrochemical CO2 reduction

Yan Dong,Peng Zhen,Wang Wei,Zeng Peng,Huang Yiyin

Abstract Carbon-based metal-free catalysts exhibit great applications in electrochemical CO 2 reduction (ECR), while most studies merely focus on large-sized carbons with limited ratio of surface atoms for engineering to create surface active centers. Here, we report a joint treatment of C60 by heating and plasma to induce a dramatic performance promotion during ECR. The electrochemical measurements indicate the Faraday efficiency for ECR toward CO production kept at high level over 80% in a wide potential region from − 0.4 to − 0.7 V versus RHE, with the highest value reaching 96.8%. The physical characterization reveals that fragmentation of C60 occurs together with N/O doping, both of which could induce change in electron structure, causing the formation of *COOH intermediate and ultimately leading to the optimized activity and selectivity for CO production. This treatment route was further revealed to be applicative for other carbon materials, e.g., single-walled carbon nanotube, to promote its ECR activity and selectivity. Graphical Abstract

Photocatalytic CO2 reduction with aminoanthraquinone organic dyes

Lei Qinqin,Yuan Huiqing,Du Jiehao,Ming Mei,Yang Shuang,Chen Ya,Lei Jingxiang,Han Zhiji

The direct utilization of solar energy to convert CO 2 into renewable chemicals remains a challenge. One essential difficulty is the development of efficient and inexpensive light-absorbers. Here we show a series of aminoanthraquinone organic dyes to promote the efficiency for visible light-driven CO 2 reduction to CO when coupled with an Fe porphyrin catalyst. Importantly, high turnover numbers can be obtained for both the photosensitizer and the catalyst, which has not been achieved in current light-driven systems. Structure-function study performed with substituents having distinct electronic effects reveals that the built-in donor-acceptor property of the photosensitizer significantly promotes the photocatalytic activity. We anticipate this study gives insight into the continued development of advanced photocatalysts for solar energy conversion.

Mesoporous tin oxide for electrocatalytic CO2 reduction

Hongtao Ge,Zhengxiang Gu,Peng Han,Hanchen Shen,Abdullah M. Al-Enizi,Lijuan Zhang,Gengfeng Zheng

The increasing accumulation of CO 2 in the atmosphere has been leading to serious environmental problems. Electrochemical reduction of CO 2 is a potential means of carbon recycling for energy storage and environmental sustainability. However, it is limited by the lack of highly active and selective electrocatalysts. Here we demonstrate the development of mesoporous tin oxide (SnO 2 ) for electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction, which facilitates the adsorption and electrochemical reduction of CO 2 inside mesopores. The highly-ordered and uniform pore sizes of the mesoporous SnO 2 electrocatalyst favor the enhancement of formation of carbon monoxide (CO) and formate during the electrochemical reduction. The combined faradaic efficiencies of CO and formate reach a peak value of ∼80% at a current density of 5 mA cm −2 at −0.8 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode. This work suggests attractive development of mesoporous electrocatalysts with a variety of pore size and structures for efficient energy conversion and electrochemical CO 2 reduction.

CO2 and Redox Dual Responsive Pickering Emulsion

Yongmin Zhang,Shuang Guo,Xiaofei Ren,Xuefeng Liu,Yun Fang

Herein, we described for the first time a CO2 and redox dual responsive paraffin oil-in-water Pickering emulsion stabilized by the modified silica nanoparticles with Se-containing tertiary amine, SeTA, in which the tertiary amine serves as a CO2-sensitive group, and the Se atom serves as a redox-sensitive center. The Pickering emulsion can be reversibly switched between stable and unstable states by bubbling CO2 and N2 in the reduced state, or with the addition of H2O2 and Na2SO3 in the absence of CO2, because of the adsorption and desorption of SeTA on the silica surface. The former is mainly attributed to a CO2-controllable electrostatic attraction, resulting from the transition of molecules between cationic and nonionic states; whereas, the latter is ascribed to a redox-tunable hydrogen bonding, originating from the transition of molecules between selenide and selenoxide. However, in the presence of CO2, redox can only induce a change in the droplet size, not demulsification. These interesting and unique multiresponsive behaviors endow the Pickering emulsion with a capacity for intelligent control of emulsification and demulsification, as well as the droplet size, which may be an asset for a myriad of technological applications in biomedicine, microfluidics, drug delivery, and cosmetics.

Screening Anion Exchange Membranes for CO2 Electrolysis

Yuxuan Zhao,Hang Hua,Shilei Wei,Jingshan Luo

In membrane electrode assembly (MEA) electrolyzers for the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) using alkaline or neutral electrolytes, anion exchange membranes (AEMs) play a critical role in determining mass transfer, energy efficiency, and stability within the reaction system. In this study, we compared commercial AEMs from three brands─Piperion, Sustainion, and Fumasep─to identify the membrane that offers the best CO2RR performance. The primary differences in the effects of AEMs on the CO2RR are reflected in energy efficiency, Faradaic efficiency of products, and device stability. Among all the AEMs, Fumasep 3–50 provides the highest energy efficiency, attributed to the excellent conductivity of the organic monomers composing it. Meanwhile, Piperion A20 and Sustainion X-37 grade RT demonstrate superior Faradaic efficiency and cation barrier properties, thereby enabling long-term CO2RR operation. This work screens available commercial AEMs for CO2 electrolysis and identifies the essential parameters for the CO2RR, providing valuable insights for the electrochemical CO2 reduction field.

Enhanced Tribocatalytic CO2 Reduction by TiO2 Nanoparticles

Yunlai He,Zuheng Jin,Sha Wu,Chuan Jiang,Changzheng Hu,Laijun Liu

The development of science and technology has brought convenience to our life, however, the CO2 emission in industrial production has aggravated the greenhouse effect and brought great damage to the ecological environment. Therefore, this study investigated the reduction process of CO2 under the condition of tribocatalysis. The effect of the rotational speed of the magnetic stirrer, the content of catalyst, the type of sacrificial agent, the reaction time and the initial CO2 content on the tribocatalytic CO2 reduction products was investigated by using nano-TiO2 (P25) as a catalyst. Under the optimal conditions, replacing the reaction solution H2O with difficult-to-degrade rhodamine B, methylene blue and methyl orange solutions further increased the contents of CO2 reduction products: CO (124 μmol h–1 g–1), C2H6 (49 μmol h–1 g–1), CH4 (24 μmol h–1 g–1), C2H4 (3 μmol h–1 g–1) and H2 (2 μmol h–1 g–1). The dual control of organic pollutants and CO2 emission problems was realized. Finally, the active substances (e–, •OH and •O2–) in the tribocatalytic process were proved to be the key for efficient CO2 reduction and realization of organic pollutants by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy tests. The method also has a great potential to crack H2 in H2O, which can alleviate the greenhouse effect caused by CO2 emission and effectively deal with water pollutants and regenerated new energy, which is in line with the national requirements of the circular economy, and is also conducive to the promotion of the sustainable and healthy development of the energy industry.

In-situ preparation of Ag2S nanoparticle-anchored BiVO4 nanosheet p-n heterostructure on three-dimensional flexible substrate for enhancement of photocatalytic activity

Chuanyun Yang,Xingjian Zhang,Zhengdao Li,Zhishuai Wang,Jiping Shi,Haiquan Xie,Ting Li,Yong Zhou

A series of hybrid films were designed and fabricated by in situ growth of Ag 2 S nanoparticles with varying content on BiVO 4 nanosheets deposited on stainless steel mesh. The formation of a p-n heterojunction between Ag 2 S and BiVO 4 enabled an extended spectral response range and facilitated the separation of charge carriers through a single directional pathway for electron transport. Exploiting these advantages, Ag 2 S/BiVO 4 composites were employed in various photocatalytic applications under simulated solar irradiation. The results demonstrated, in terms of water purification, that the composite not only possessed photocatalytic ability to degrade RhB or Cr(VI) individually but also exhibited significantly enhanced photocatalytic efficiency in simultaneously removing mixed pollutants containing RhB and Cr(VI). In terms of CO 2 conversion, Ag 2 S/BiVO 4 also displayed a stronger photocatalysis capability compared to pure BiVO 4 film. Furthermore, the immobilized Ag 2 S/BiVO 4 film exhibited improved mechanical strength and long-term stability, making it highly suitable for practical applications.

MXene/poly(ethylene glycol) mixed matrix membranes with excellent permeance for highly efficient separation of CO2/N2 and CO2/CH4

Wenjia Luo,Zhenhua Niu,Peng Mu,Jian Li

Membrane separation systems have received extensive attention in the field of gas separation due to its low cost, high-efficiency and eco-friendly advantages. However, it is till challenging to break through the trade-off effect for a highly efficient membrane separation process. Herein, a high-performance CO 2 -philic MXene/PEG mixed matrix membrane is prepared by a simple vacuum filtration process. Excellent CO 2 permeance and selectivity in separation of the CO 2 /N 2 and CO 2 /CH 4 is shown for the as-prepared MXene/PEG (600) mixed matrix membrane because of CO 2 -philic property of the PEG and the nanochannels of the MXene . In permeation experiment, exceptional CO 2 permeance of 1626.99 GPU and ideal selectivity of 32.18 for CO 2 /N 2 and 27.84 for CO 2 /CH 4 , is exhibited, respectively, for 25 wt% MXene/PEG (600) mixed matrix membrane. This study provides a new strategy for design and fabrication of the CO 2 -philic MXene-based membrane with highly efficient separation of the CO 2 from natural gas and flue gas.

Synthesis of dual-functionalized APTES-Bentonite/PVDF mixed-matrix membranes for the efficient separation of CO2/CH4 and CO2/N2

Shaocan Dong,Weiqiu Huang,Xufei Li,Xinya Wang,Baoyou Yan,Zhen Zhang,Jing Zhong

In response to global climate change, most countries have set carbon reduction targets. Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs), which combine the characteristics of inorganic nanofillers and organic matrices, have received wide attentions because of their good permeability and selective performance for the separation of CO 2 from industrial waste gases. However, the poor dispersion, compatibility and interfacial defects often lead to poor gas separation performance. In this paper, according to the dissolution-diffusion and Lewis acid-base theories, inorganic filler of amino-functionalized Bentonite (APTES-Bentonite) with -NH 2 was firstly synthesized to improve the affinity of CO 2 . Then, the dual-functionalized MMMs of APTES-Bentonite/PVDF (A-B/P MMMs) was prepared and adopted for the separation of CO 2 /CH 4 and CO 2 /N 2 , showing the increase of 87.76% and 75.31% compared to the pristine PVDF membrane, respectively. These excellent performances were attributed to the synergistic effect of APTES-Bentonite with -NH 2 groups and PVDF with -F groups, which provide a dual-functional transport pathway for CO 2 molecules due to the interactions of host-guest. Overall, the customized A-B/P MMMs offer superior CO 2 separation performance, which provides some valuable references for large-scale CO 2 capture studies.

Synthesis of hydrophobic Pd-poly(ionic liquid)s with excellent CO2 affinity to efficiently catalyze CO2 hydrogenation to formic acid

Baicheng Feng,Zichen Zhang,Jiaqiang Wang,Donglin Yang,Qun Li,Yaping Liu,Hengjun Gai,Tingting Huang,Hongbing Song

The catalytic hydrogenation of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) into formic acid is among the most important reactions to alleviate global warming and realize the carbon cycle. How to achieve rapid activation of CO 2 remains a challenge. In this work, we designed two novel hydrophobic poly(ionic liquid)s (PILs) with a good affinity for CO 2 . Since the abundant N atoms in the PILs can anchor palladium (Pd) nanoparticles, the designed catalyst can rapidly activate CO 2 and H 2 simultaneously, thus efficiently catalyzing the hydrogenation of CO 2 to formic acid under mild conditions. Due to the synergy from the bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide anion ([Tf 2 N − ]) with strong hydrophobicity and CO 2 affinity and trimethylamine (NEt 3 ) as a low dissociation energy alkaline additive, the resultant Pd/PIL-bip-Tf 2 N exhibited the best catalytic performance on the hydrogenation of CO 2 to formic acid. The TOF value reached 1,190 h −1 in the aqueous solution of NEt 3 at 100 °C, 1 h, and a total pressure of 4 MPa. The activation energy and dissociation energy during the catalytic process were calculated by DFT, indicating that the synergistic effect of NEt 3 is better than that of other alkaline additives. In addition, the catalytic activity of the catalyst remained stable after several cycling experiments. Based on the obtained results, we proposed a possible reaction pathway. Therefore, PILs have great potential as catalyst carrier material for CO 2 hydrogenation.

Water-lean blend mixtures of amino acid salts and 2-methoxyethanol for CO2 capture: Density, viscosity and solubility of CO2

Hui Li,Hui Guo,Shufeng Shen

Water-lean amino acid salt (AAS) solutions have attracted special attentions for energy-efficient CO 2 absorbents. In this work, 2-methoxyethanol was proposed as a novel anti-solvent due to its excellent properties such as low volatility, low specific heat capacity and low viscosity. Density and viscosity were measured at atmospheric pressure for water-lean blends of potassium sarcosinate (SarK) or potassium L -prolinate (ProK)/water/2-methoxyethanol over the temperature range from (293 to 353) K and the AAS molality up to 4.914 mol·kg −1 . Partially CO 2 loaded solutions were also investigated. Equilibrium solubility of CO 2 in AAS/water/2-methoxyethanol solutions was measured in a stirred equilibrium cell at temperatures of (313, 333 and 373) K and CO 2 partial pressures up to 190 kPa. These property data were correlated using empirical correlations as a function of AAS molality, CO 2 molality and/or temperature. The predicted values of density and viscosity matched well with the measured data, with AADs within 0.31% for density and 3.76% for viscosity. The solubility data of CO 2 were fairly fitted with a proposed Soft model.

Coupling Amino Acid with THF for the Synergistic Promotion of CO2 Hydrate Micro Kinetics: Implication for Hydrate-Based CO2 Sequestration

Xuejian Liu,Yan Li,Guang-Jin Chen,Dao-Yi Chen,Bo Sun,Zhenyuan Yin

CO2 capture and sequestration are broadly recognized as the most effective technology for reducing CO2 emissions and mitigating global climate change. In this regard, hydrate-based CO2 sequestration (HBCS) has been proposed as an effective method for long-term safe and stable CO2 sequestration. It is a promising technology for reducing the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere and achieving carbon neutrality. However, one major challenge related to HBCS technology is the lack of understanding of how to improve the formation kinetics of CO2 hydrate effectively. Herein, in this study, we identified the synergistic promotion effect on CO2 hydrate formation when a low-dose thermodynamic promoter (tetrahydrofuran, THF) is coupled with an environment-friendly kinetic promoter (l-methionine, l-Met). Based on the kinetic experiments and the morphological observation, 0.6 mol % THF coupled with 0.1 wt %l-Met yields the optimal CO2 gas uptake. In situ Raman spectra reveal the mechanism of the observed two-step growth behavior at the molecular level, where low-dose THF promotes the initial CO2-THF sII hydrate nucleation and growth in the solution and l-Met promotes the subsequent CO2 sI hydrate growth along the surface of the reactor. Our study unveils the underlying synergistic mechanism when thermodynamic and kinetic promoters are coupled for CO2 hydrate formation. The results provide guidance for the identification and use of novel bio-friendly thermodynamic and kinetic promoters and are beneficial to a series of sustainable hydrate-based technologies when fast CO2 formation is required.
