Boron Carbon Nitride Semiconductors Decorated with CdS Nanoparticles for Photocatalytic Reduction of CO2

Min Zhou,Sibo Wang,Pengju Yang,Caijin Huang,Xinchen Wang

Ternary boron carbon nitride (BCN) semiconductors have been developed as emerging metal-free photocatalysts for visible-light reduction of CO2, but the achieved efficiency is still not satisfying. Herein, we report that the CO2 photoreduction performance of a bulk BCN semiconductor can be substantially improved by surface engineering with CdS nanoparticles. The CdS/BCN photocatalysts are characterized completely by diverse tests (e.g., XRD, FTIR, XPS, DRS, SEM, TEM, N2 sorption, PL, and transient photocurrent spectroscopy). Performance of the CdS/BCN heterostructures is evaluated by reductive CO2 conversion reactions with visible light under benign reaction conditions. Compared with bare BCN material, the optimized CdS/BCN photocatalyst exhibits a 10-fold-enhanced CO2 reduction activity and high stability, delivering a considerable CO production rate of 12.5 μmol h–1 (250 μmol h–1 g–1) with triethanolamine (TEOA) as the reducing agent. The reinforced photocatalytic CO2 reduction activity is mainly assigned to the obviously improved visible-light harvesting and the greatly accelerated separation/transport kinetics of light-triggered electron–hole pairs. Furthermore, a possible visible-light-induced CO2 reduction mechanism is proposed on the basis of photocatalytic and photo(electro)chemical results.

Enhanced photoelectrochemical sensing for MUC1 detection based on TiO2/CdS:Eu/CdS cosensitized structure

Xing-Pei Liu,Pan-Pan Li,Chang-jie Mao,He-Lin Niu,Ji-Ming Song,Bao-Kang Jin

A novel ultrasensitive photoelectrochemical aptasensing was developed to detect mucin 1 (MUC1) based on TiO 2 /CdS:Eu nanocomposite. The TiO 2 /CdS:Eu nanocomposite modified fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) electrode was prepared by successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction technique (SILAR) and then was employed as matrix for immobilization of SH-DNA (DNA1). After 6-mercaptohexanol (MCH) blocked unbound sites of the electrode surface, the MUC1 aptamer(DNA2) was introduced, allowing MUC1 aptamer to hybridize with DNA1. Subsequently, CdS-COOH QDs as signal amplification elements were successively labeled on the terminal of MUC1 aptamer. In this case, the target MUC1 detection was based upon the photocurrent change originated from quantities change of the signal amplification elements CdS. In the presence of MUC1, the MUC1 aptamer was specifically bound with MUC1, and meanwhile MUC1/DNA2/CdS was released from the electrode surface, resulting in significantly decreased photocurrent intensity. The novel ultrasensitive photoelectrochemical aptasensing presented a highly selective, sensitive and reproductive detection of MUC1 from 1 nM to 5 μM with a lower detection limit of 0.3 nM. At the same time, it also provided a good specificity, reproducibility, stability and promising strategy to detect a variety of other protein targets for early clinical diagnosis of different diseases.

CsPbBr3/CdS Core/Shell Structure Quantum Dots for Inverted Light-Emitting Diodes Application

Tang Xiaosheng,Yang Jie,Li Shiqi,Chen Weiwei,Hu Zhiping,Qiu Jing

Novel CsPbBr3/CdS core/shell structure quantum dots (QDs) were successfully synthesized using a facile hot-injection method. The corresponding CsPbBr3/CdS QDs based light-emitting diodes (QLEDs) were further prepared, which demonstrated the maximum luminance of 354 cd/m2 and an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 0.4% with the current efficiency (CE) of 0.3 cd/A. Moreover, the optoelectronic performance of the CsPbBr3/CdS QDs based QLEDs exhibited a comparable enhancement in contrast to the pure CsPbBr3 QDs based QLEDs. Hypothetically, the novel CsPbBr3/CdS structure QDs introduced one new route for advanced light emission applications of perovskite materials.

A dual photocarrier separation channel in CdS/ZnS for outstanding photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Yi Zheng,Qiaoling Chen,Wenjing Zhang,Chongwen Zhang,Rong Ma,Chunlei Li,Jing Zhang

The photocatalytic hydrogen evolution half-reaction (HER) is a promising technology for meeting future energy demands. An excellent photocarrier separation is essential for the HER. Here, a CdS/ZnS composite (CZS) with a dual photocarrier separation channel has been synthesized using the epitaxial growth method to achieve this aim. XRD and TEM show that pre-adsorption of S2− on the CdS surface facilitates the conversion of CdS into ZnS with a larger solubility product, implying a good carrier transport channel between CdS and ZnS. Based on XPS, PL, and photo-deposition experiments, a dual-channel photocarrier separation mechanism has been proposed, which is the source of the great photocarrier separation, and thus the hydrogen evolution rate of the CZS-2 sample (22.05 mmol g−1 h−1) becomes 18.5 and 73.5 times higher than those of CdS and ZnS. The apparent quantum yield (AQY) of CZS-2 at 420 nm is 4.68%.

CoS nanorod arrays with different lenghth used in CdS sensitized ZnO solar cells

Sun Yunfei,Yang Lili,Wei Maobin,Chen Gang,Che Guangbo,Yang Jinghai,Wang Zhe,Gao Zhiyuan

Well aligned CoS NRAs with different length have been grown on ITO substrates by a simple chemical method without any catalyst. The morphology properties of the as grown CoS nanostructures were investigated by SEM and TEM images. From the SEM results measured from the tilt-view, with the reaction time increasing, the length of CoS nanorods increased. However these CoS(6) NRAs partially aggregated, which will decrease the surface area of CoS NRAs. The optimized photovoltaic performance with a Voc of 0.66 V, a Jsc of 1.96 mA/cm 2 , an FF of 0.43, and a η of 0.64 % is obtained from the device based on CoS(4) ANRAs electrode. Although the quantum dot sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs) with CoS NRAs show smaller η values than that of the QDSSC with sputtered Pt counter electrode, the CoS material will be an efficient alternative for the Pt electrode due to its excellent catalytic ability and low cost.

Significantly enhanced photocatalytic performance of CdS coupled WO3 nanosheets and the mechanism study

Xinlin Liu,Yan Yan,Zulin Da,Weidong Shi,Changchang Ma,Peng Lv,Yanfeng Tang,Guanxin Yao,Yuting Wu,Pengwei Huo,Yongsheng Yan

In this report, a novel CdS–WO 3 nano-heterojunction photocatalyst was successfully synthesized by a multi-step hydrothermal method. Obtained samples exhibit enhanced photocatalytic activity compared with pure WO 3 and CdS for the degradation of Ciprofloxacin (CIP). Particularly, 30%-CdS–70%-WO 3 sample shows the highest degradation ratio (88.85%) of CIP among all samples, which is about 3 times over the pure WO 3 . This activity enhancement could be attributed to the fast migration of photo-induced charge-carriers, which can sufficiently inhibit the recombination of electron–hole pairs.

Enhancing the Surface-State Emission in Trap-Rich CdS Nanocrystals by Silver Nanoparticles

Xu Pei,Li Qiang,Li Tao,Rao Wenye,Wang Yuanzhao,Lan Sheng,Wu Lijun

It is well known that surface plasmon resonance (SPR) can selectively enhance the photoluminescence (PL) from nearby chromophores with a single emission peak at an appropriate distance. Here, we combine white light-emitting CdS quantum dot nanocrystals containing band-edge and surface-state emissions simultaneously with Ag nanoparticles and study the interaction between them. It is found that the surface-state emission is always enhanced while the band-edge emission quenched regardless of the SPR wavelength of Ag nanoparticles. This phenomenon reveals that the SPR of Ag nanoparticles is not enhancing the emission from a wavelength-matched state. We propose that the surface plasmon of Ag nanoparticles is first excited by the energy of the band-edge emission and then the excited energetic electrons transfer to the surface-state of CdS. Through this energy transfer process, the surface-state emission is enhanced and band-edge emission quenched. This investigation can not only deliver understanding of the complicated interaction between metallic nanoparticles and nearby multi-emission-peak contained chromophores, but it also has potential applications in tuning the color temperature of white light-emitting materials.

Graphene-enhanced visible-light photocatalysis of large-sized CdS particles for wastewater treatment

Lü Wei,Chen Jie,Wu Yao,Duan Lianfeng,Yang Yue,Ge Xin

The hybrid composites of graphene decorated by large-sized CdS particles (G/M-CdS) were prepared by a one-pot solvothermal route in which the reduction of graphite oxide into graphene was accompanied by the generation of microsized CdS particles. The structure and composition of the obtained nanocomposites were studied by means of X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The CdS particles with the average sizes of approximately 640 nm were formed on graphene sheets. The as-prepared composite was used as adsorbent to remove dye from wastewater using the organic dye Rhodamine B as the adsorbate. The G/M-CdS composite reveals a high photodegradation rate under visible light irradiation. Our results demonstrate that the G/M-CdS is very promising for removing organic dyes from wastewater.

Au nanoparticle-decorated ultrathin CdS nanowires for high-efficiency photodegradation of organic dyes

Wang Xinyu,Ying Yulong,Hu Pan,Lei Jiahuan,Peng Xinsheng

CdS nanowires (NWs) are obtained by the sulfurization of Cd(OH) 2 nanowires at room temperature using H 2 S. The CdS NWs with diameter of 2–5 nm exhibit high photocatalytic performance due to the ultrafine size. To further improve the performance, Au nanoparticles (NPs) with different sizes, i.e., 5, 20, 40 and 100 nm, that decorated the CdS NWs are synthesized through a simple self-assembly and solid sulfuration process. The synthesized Au NPs–CdS NWs hybrids show higher photocatalytic efficiency than that of pure CdS NWs. Furthermore, 20 nm Au NPs–CdS NWs hybrids with an optimal Au loading of 3.2 wt% exhibit the highest photocatalytic efficiency. Both the enhanced separation of photoinduced hole–electron pairs and the absorption of visible light by incorporating Au NPs significantly improve the photocatalytic performance.

Facile construction of MoS2 decorated CdS hybrid heterojunction with enhanced hydrogen generation performance

R. Sridevi,A. Prakasam,P.M. Anbarasan,Rajneesh Kumar,M. Karthik,K. Deepakvijay

Promoting the charge separation to improve photocatalytic performance of semiconductor photocatalysts is very important in the field of artificial photosynthesis. Here, a novel MoS 2 /CdS 2D–2D ultrathin nanosheet heterostructure was fabricated via a one-pot solvothermal route. The obtained 2D–2D MoS 2 /CdS nanojunction has not only provided large contact areas, but also shortened the charge transport distance, resulting in significantly enhanced photocatalytic H 2 evolution property. The composites that were synthesized were examined using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), Transmission electron microscope (TEM), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS), Photoluminescence (PL) and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) analysis. By optimizing the 2D MoS2 amounts in the heterojunction, the 5 wt.% 2D/2D MoS2/CdS heterojunction displayed the maximal photocatalytic H2 evolution rate of 4449 μmolh −1 g −1 under visible light irradiation in the presence of lactic acid as the sacrificial reagent, which was 6 times higher than that of pristine 2D CdS. Based on the photoelectrochemical and photoluminescence spectra tests, it could be deduced that the charge separation and transfer of 2D/2D MoS 2 /CdS heterojunction was tremendously improved, and the recombination of photoinduced electron-hole pairs was effectively impeded. Moreover, the 2D MoS2 was used as a cocatalyst to provide the abundant active sites and lower the overpotential for H2 generation reaction. The current work would offer an insight to fabricate the 2D/2D heterojunction photocatalysts for splitting H2O into H2.

Dual interfacing with metallic cobalt boosts the electron shuttle of CdS-carbide nanoassemblies

Xujing Ji,Jiayang Zhang,Guoqing Zhang,Na Li,Ruixin Wang,Haiqiang Lin,Xinping Duan

Harnessing accelerated interfacial redox, thus boosting charge separation, is of great importance in photocatalytic solar hydrogen generation. In effect, nanoassembling non-noble metallic phases in CdS-based systems and elucidating their role in photocatalysis hold the key to eventually boosting electron shuttle in the field. Here we combine an efficient in-situ exsoluted metallic Co 0 nanoparticles on a carbides matrix (CMG) with CdS (CdS@ Co CMG) for photogeneration of hydrogen. The metallic cobalt phase exhibits strong binding at the CdS-carbide dual interfaces, forming the accelerated “electron converter” mechanism validated by charge transfer kinetics and achieving two orders of magnitude faster hydrogen production (44.42 mmol g −1  h −1 ) relative to CdS (0.43 mmol g −1  h −1 ). We propose that the unique catalyst configuration enable the directional electron-relay photocatalysis via harnessing interfaces between Co 0 phase, carbides, and CdS clusters, which eventually boosts the redox process and charge separation of the integrated system, leading to high H 2 production rates in the suspension.

Dual-mode luminescence and anti-counterfeiting application of YVO4: Eu3+@SiO2@CDs nanocomposites

Jiantao Lü,Ting Fan,Jie Liang,Yayun Zhou,Tingting Deng,Ruming Jiang

With the combination of carbon quantum dots (CDs) and rare earth-doped fluorescent materials, multi-mode luminescence can be achieved in fluorescent ink, thereby enhancing its anti-counterfeiting security coefficient. However, the self-quenching process in CDs currently hinders their application in the field of anti-counterfeiting. In this study, we employed simple chemical method to prepare the SiO 2 -encapsulated YVO 4 :Eu 3+ /CDs nanocomposites, which greatly improved the stability of the composite and achieved dual-mode solid-state luminescence. Quick response code anti-counterfeiting patterns were fabricated using screen printing technology, and dual-mode luminescence performance with red and blue emission was achieved under excitation at 254 nm and 365 nm respectively. The YVO 4 :Eu 3+ @SiO 2 @CDs nanocomposites showed stable dual-mode luminescent performance in both solid-state and solvent environment, demonstrating great potential in anticounterfeiting and information protection application.
