Exploration of new non-precious metal catalysts for highly efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is essential for sustainable energy utilization technologies. Herein, porous biomass-derived carbon modified by Cu, N co-doping and Cu nanoparticles was synthesized by hydrothermal followed pyrolysis strategy, and used for electrocatalytic ORR. The optimized Cu/Cu-N-C catalyst exhibits large surface area (235.91 cm 3 g −1 ) and hierarchical pore structure . Benefiting from the above factors, the Cu/Cu-N-C catalyst performs a high onset potential (E onset , 0.947 V vs. reversible hydrogen potential (RHE)) and a half-wave potential (E 1/2 , 0.875 V vs. RHE) in 0.1 M KOH solution. The calculated electron transfer number of 3.92 suggests the near-four-electron ORR process. Besides, the Cu/Cu-N-C catalyst also performs extraordinary stability and higher methanol tolerance than Pt/C. In addition, the assembled Zn-air battery based on the optimized Cu/Cu-N-C catalyst exhibits a higher power density of 150.7 mW cm −2 than the that of Pt/C-based battery. This work put forward a newfangled method to fabricate efficient ORR catalyst by loading active component on biomass-derived carbon, which follows the sustainable development concept, and provides a profitable reference for designing nonprecious metal carbon-based ORR electrocatalyst .

The electrochemical/chemical growth of porous (Ni,Co,Cu)(OH) 2 was reported based on the corrosion behaviors of Ni-Co-Cu films in neutral salt spray . The films prepared by using electrodeposition were ternary solid solution alloys with a simple phase structure, strong texture, nanoscale grains, large microstrain and a large number of crystal defects . The unique microstructures coupled with extensive ion diffusion during the subsequent corrosion process facilitated the formation of ternary hydroxides with uniform and porous nanostructures . The ternary hydroxides composed of Ni-/Co-dominant hydrotalcite-like and Cu-dominant orthorhombic (Ni,Co,Cu)(OH) 2 could be efficiently prepared by motivating the transformation from oxide to hydroxide. The binder-free (Ni,Co,Cu)(OH) 2 electrode exhibited a high specific capacitance of 1738 F g −1 at a current density of 20 A g −1 and decent cycling stability. The electrochemical/chemical growth mode, uniform porous nanostructures and nature of the ternary hydroxides could account for the superior electrochemical performances. This work proposed a simple and green approach to prepare multicomponent hydroxides as novel electrode materials for rechargeable batteries and hybrid supercapacitors .

Utilizing electrocatalysis to convert CO2 into high-value industrial raw materials can not only effectively reduce CO2 emissions but also achieve a closed carbon cycle. This method holds great potential for addressing global warming and alleviating the fossil fuel crisis. Here, we report a novel electrocatalyst for CO2 reduction composed of a composite material derived from Cu-MOF74 and Cu2O, synthesized under the regulation of an appropriate amount of KOH. The research results indicate that the unique Cu0/Cu+ interface in Cu-MOF74/Cu2O-350 enhances the adsorption of reaction intermediates, providing more active sites for CO2 reduction. Additionally, the moderate carbonization during the thermal treatment process increases conductivity and enriches the electrochemical active surface area, accelerating the charge transfer rate. Consequently, this composite exhibits excellent CO2 reduction performance. At -1.3 V vs. RHE, the Faraday efficiency (FE) for C2H4 production reached up to 32.48%, which was significantly higher than that of pure Cu2O-350 (9.25%) and Cu-MOF74-350 (15.52%). Even after 6 hours of reaction, the FE for C2H4 remained above 24.52%, reflecting its good stability. Furthermore, we utilized in-situ infrared spectroscopy to study the key intermediates of the relevant reduction products, inferring the possible reaction pathways for the formation of HCOOH and C2H4. This study provides a simple synthesis method for the preparation of high-selectivity MOF-derived composite catalysts for the electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to value-added chemicals.

Catalysts in-situ reconstructed from transition metal sulfides for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) have been regarded as potential alternatives for the noble metal catalysts . Intriguingly, it was found that the self-optimized SO 4 2− @Cu doped Co(OH) 2 catalyst was reconstructed from bimetallic sulfide of CuCo 2 S 4 . During the OER process, the copper was partially leached and meantime doped into the in-situ generated Co(OH) 2 with SO 4 2− adsorption, while only oxides were discovered in counterparts of mono-metal sulfides. As a result, the SO 4 2− @Cu doped Co(OH) 2 catalyst exhibited superior OER performances, with low overpotentials of 211/272 mV to achieve the current densities of 10/100 mA cm −2 , exceeding the counterparts reconstructed from mono-metal sulfides. Experimental and theoretical results suggested that the in situ generated Cu doped Co(OH) 2 possessed thin and loosely layered structure with expanded lattice spacing (lattice spacing expanded from 0.28 nm to 0.46 nm) due to the SO 4 2− adsorption, making the intermediates more accessible to the active centers. In addition, the catalyst surface changed from hydrophobicity to super hydrophilicity , which greatly accelerated the mass transfer. This work indicated that the in-situ reconstruction process was greatly influenced by the interactions between metal sites and sulfide species, directly influencing the OER performances of the reconstructed catalysts.

Copper and copper alloys own high thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity, good plasticity, and corrosion resistance, which are widely used in electric power, aerospace, and marine engineering. Due to low absorption rate of infrared and near infrared light, high thermal conductivity and high activity with oxygen, laser cladding of copper, and copper alloys are difficult to be conducted in air since the problems associated to cracks and voids are always hardly to be eliminated. In this paper, C-Al 2 O 3 -Cu composite powder mixed with Ni and Fe was developed to solve these problems. Use of carbon was to depress the oxidation and improve the laser absorption, while alumina was used to improve the laser absorption and mechanical strength. To improve the bonding strength between cladding layer and substrate, Ni and Fe were used. Experimental results showed that no obvious aggregation was observed and the powder showed good fluidity. The tensile strength of the cladding layer is 406.7 ± 0.1MPa which is about 1.7 times higher than that of pure copper substrate, and the tensile fracture of the cladding layer revealed microporous aggregation fracture due to the existence of Al 2 O 3 in the cladding layer.

In this work, the Cu-alginate/graphene aerogels were prepared by using alginate, graphene and copper chloride as precursors by a freeze-drying process. Finally, N-doped carbon aerogels supported by Cu nanoparticles (NPs) (Cu/N-CAs) were obtained through annealing in the NH3 atmosphere. The morphology, microstructures, specific surface area, and pore size distribution were studied by SEM, XRD, and BET analysis. The results showed that a significant amount of Cu NPs were uniformly disseminated on the aerogels’ surface, and the catalysts’ specific surface area reached 141 m2/g. Electrochemical tests revealed good catalytic capabilities for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) of the as-obtained Cu/N-CAs. Compared to the commercial 20%Pt/C, the Cu/N-CAs exhibited comparable catalytic performance, superior catalytic stability and methanol resistance. The transfer of 3.94 electrons indicated that the Cu/N-CAs were undergoing a four-electron (4e-) ORR process.

Room-temperature plasma-assisted catalysis represents an important pathway for CO 2 valorization. Rational design of catalysts tailored to plasma environment holds significant potential for improving catalytic efficiency. Unprecedentedly, we report a coordination-engineering strategy to fabricate the Fe/Cu mix-metal organic framework (Fe/Cu-MOF) catalysts for plasma-driven CO 2 dissociation into CO. Precise modulation during synthesis revealed an optimal Fe:Cu ratio of 0.44:0.56 to generating synergistic active sites favorable for CO production. The in situ-formed FeCu-based catalyst exhibited exceptionally high CO space-time yield of 32.3 mmol·gcat-1·h-1 under room-temperature plasma conditions. The coordination-tailored electronic structure enables the dynamic variations in the oxidation states of Fe/Cu upon plasma activation, thus facilitating sustained CO 2 activation. This work establishes atomic-level control of bimetallic sites as a powerful paradigm for plasma-catalytic systems. Graphical For the first time, Fe-Cu bimetallic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) synthesized via a one‑pot solvothermal method were used for efficient decomposition of CO 2 into CO with excellent stability under nonthermal plasma (NTP). This integrated approach offers fundamental insights and technical support for the development of robust catalysts under plasma conditions.

Abstract Aqueous batteries with high safety are ideal large-scale energy storage systems, but still face challenges in cycle life, self-discharge, cost, and environment-related issues. Here, we report a rechargeable aqueous zinc–copper battery with high performance, environmental friendliness, and sustainability. We employed widely available metal foils as electrodes and developed a novel zinc–bromide and cuprous–bromide complex anion-containing anolyte and catholyte, respectively, separated by a cation exchange membrane (CEM), utilizing strong coordination between soft bromide ions and zinc/cuprous ions. The battery exhibited a high areal capacity of 4 mAh/cm2 with stable cycling over 2700 h (>900 cycles), energy efficiency up to ∼90%, excellent 99.6% capacity retention against self-discharge over 3 days, and facile scalability to Ah-level Zn/Cu batteries. Importantly, all elements were recycled at the end of the battery cycle life by simple, cost-effective processes with recovery efficiencies of ∼97% for Zn and ∼100% for Cu. This drastically lowered the battery cost and made the anionic Zn–Cu (AZC) battery promising for energy storage at a low cost with high performance and long-term sustainability.

In the realm of low-power gas sensing, bimetallic sulfides have garnered a lot of interest as prospective sensitive materials. However, their poor tolerance to dampness and delayed reaction kinetics makes them impractical. In order to modify the electronic structure of CdIn 2 S 4 and enhance its gas sensing capabilities, sulfur vacancies were added using atomic Cu doping. The test findings showed that Cu–CdIn 2 S 4 had a response value of 21 to 100 ppm triethylamine gas at a working temperature of 100 °C, which was five times greater than that of CdIn 2 S 4 . The minimal detection limit was 100 ppb. It also responds quickly and recovers quickly (2 s/33 s). Additionally, the sensor has good humidity resistance and selectivity. Cu doping into CdIn 2 S 4 increases the specific surface area and sulfur vacancy concentration, which speeds up the sensitive materials interaction kinetics with the target gas and improves gas sensing capability. The findings show that the defect design work has a lot of potential for use in low-power triethylamine detection, as it is an inexpensive and highly responsive gas-sensitive material.

Separating aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons can produce high-quality cracking feedstocks and recover value-added aromatic products. Covalent organic framework (COF) may find promising application owing to its exceptional structures and functionalities. In this study, Cu(I)-COF was designed and integrated into Pebax matrix to fabricate facilitated transport membranes. The immobilization of Cu(I) ions onto the COF framework effectively mitigates leaching. Additionally, the COF building blocks provides a stable electron cloud environment for Cu(I), ensuring long-term stability for over 6 months. The vertical channels in the COF afford rapid mass transfer, and the uniformly distributed Cu(I) enhances toluene affinity, thereby intensifying the transfer of toluene. For a 50 wt% toluene/n-heptane mixture, the Cu 3 L 3 -Pa-Pebax-2 membrane demonstrated a permeation flux of 1100 g·m −2 ·h −1 and a separation factor of 5.44. This study provides a new example for the application of multifunctional organic framework materials to fabricate facilitated transport membranes.

As a persistent inflammatory dermatological disorder, psoriasis impacts a global population of millions, with existing therapies frequently limited by side effects, high toxicity, and low effectiveness. Herein, we present the design and synthesis of a copper–samarium (Cu–Sm)-based bimetallic nanozyme (CS NPs) with strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory characteristics for psoriasis therapy. CS NPs imitate natural antioxidant enzymes and efficiently neutralize H2O2, •OH, and O2•–. Characterization investigations have confirmed the nanoparticles’ stability, appropriate Sm doping ratio, and catalytic effectiveness. In vitro, CS NPs decrease ROS levels, restrict keratinocyte proliferation, and regulate inflammatory cytokine release through NF-κB pathway inhibition in HaCaT cells activated with IL-17. In vivo, CS NPs ameliorate IMQ-triggered psoriasiform lesions in mouse models through suppression of epidermal acanthosis, immune cell infiltration, and inflammatory marker expression. These results demonstrate the therapeutic potential of Cu–Sm nanozymes to provide biocompatible and effective psoriasis treatment, offering a viable substitute for conventional therapies.

Single-atom catalysts for alkyne semi-hydrogenation have been extensively investigated due to their high metal utilization and improved olefin selectivity. However, their reactivity is hindered by the sluggish activation of reactants on isolated sites. Herein, a non-precise metal catalyst consisting of Ni-Cu hetero-diatomic pairs was prepared using a sequential deposition method. The diatomic sites catalyst exhibited an unprecedented activity among non-precious catalysts with over 98% conversion and 77 mol C2H2 mol metal −1 h −1 at 180 °C, whereas the single-atom catalysts of Cu/C and Ni/C were almost inert under the same conditions. Experimental and theoretical results revealed the crucial diatomic synergy between the Ni-Cu pairs, wherein acetylene was adsorbed on Ni sites and hydrogen was adsorbed on Cu sites, and the diatomic site enabled spontaneous desorption of ethylene. The superior activity of the diatomic catalyst was observed, resulting from the enhanced dominance of d -electrons of Ni near the Fermi level. The research demonstrates an approach to designing non-precise metal catalysts with extraordinary catalytic performance for alkyne hydrogenation.
