Optimal construction of Co3O4/Cu2O photo-assisted electrodes for aqueous Zn-ion hybrid capacitors: performance and mechanism

Yuan Liu,Ming Li,Qingqing Song,Yuancheng Hou,Yingjia Wang

Co3O4, with a high theoretical capacitance, is a promising electrode material for energy storage devices. However, the poor conductivity, low reaction activity and sluggish reaction kinetics of Co3O4 constrain its performance. Herein, light irradiation is employed to improve the electrochemical performance of Co3O4 as a cathode material in zinc ion hybrid capacitors (ZIHCs). To strengthen the favorable effect of light irradiation, Cu2O is coupled with Co3O4 to construct a heterojunction, which enhances the separation and transfer of photo-induced charge carriers, thereby improving the conductivity, reactivity and reaction kinetics of materials. Two different heterojunction structures are constructed, and their photoelectric properties and photo-assisted charging performance are investigated. The optimal Co3O4/Cu2O electrode (OC2) shows a specific capacitance of 793.0 F g−1 at a current density of 4 A g−1 under illumination, which is 77.2% higher than that in the dark and is 3.7 and 10.2 times the capacitance of pristine Co3O4 and Cu2O, respectively. The mechanism analysis provides theoretical support for the photo-enhanced electrochemical performance of OC electrodes. The constructed OC2//Zn capacitor exhibits a high energy density of 255.3 Wh kg−1 and an excellent power density of 15.9 kW kg−1 under illumination. The device also demonstrates long-term stability with a capacity retention of 93.6% after 1000 cycles.

Interfacial charge transfer dynamics in S-scheme Cu2O/SnS2 heterojunction for enhanced photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants

Hui Wang,Yuxuan Pan,Jiaming Yang,Boyang Tang,Furong Ye,Chenxi Gao,Changcun Han,Changlin Yu

Photocatalytic degradation is a promising method for alleviating water pollution by utilizing solar energy and molecular oxygen as an oxidant. In this study, we synthesized an n-p type Cu 2 O/SnS 2 composite with an S-scheme heterojunction structure and investigated its photocatalytic degradation performance on methyl orange dye. Nano-cubic Cu 2 O particles are uniformly distributed on SnS 2 nanoflowers, forming a tight S-scheme heterojunction that facilitates rapid separation and transfer of photogenerated carriers. Superoxide radicals and holes play crucial roles in the photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange. Oxygen adsorption experiments reveal the adsorption behavior on the S-scheme heterojunction surface and its impact on photocatalytic performance. At a copper-to-tin ratio of 3:1, the Cu 2 O/SnS 2 composite achieved the highest catalytic activity under xenon lamp irradiation, with a methyl orange degradation rate of 97 % within 75 min and over 93 % after four cycles. The first-order reaction rate constant was significantly higher than those of Cu 2 O and SnS 2 . This study provides valuable insights into the design of efficient photocatalytic materials for environmental applications.

Covalent triazine framework enables uniform dispersion of Cu2O catalysts for effectively boosting thermal decomposition of ammonium perchlorate

Xianliang Chen,Bowei Gao,Jiayu Qin,Jialu Guan,Qiong Wu,Jing Lv,Linghua Tan

In this study, an efficient strategy was proposed to provide a new insight for solving the problem of decreased catalytic effect and increased usage of transition metal oxides (TMOs) catalysts used for the thermal decomposition of ammonium perchlorate (AP), caused by the serious agglomeration. That is to realize the uniform dispersion of one typical TMO Cu 2 O on the surface of the covalent triazine framework (CTF) which has the features of nitrogen-rich, large specific surface area and special framework structure, based on the strong coordination interaction. Therefore, first of all, new CTF/Cu 2 O composites were successfully prepared, and the results on the morphology and structure characterization could show that the Cu 2 O was uniformly dispersed on the surface of CTF. Then, the CTF/Cu 2 O composites were found to obviously decrease the high temperature decomposition (HTD) peak of AP by 50 °C, showing the good catalytic effect of CTF/Cu 2 O composites and the feasibility of proposed strategy. Finally, the thermal decomposition process of AP was facilitated by the homogeneous dispersion of Cu 2 O on the surface of CTF and the large specific surface area of CTF that favored the adsorption of gas products during the decomposition process.

Cu/Cu2O nanoparticles supported on electrospun carbon nanofibers as high-performance cathodic catalyst for photocatalytic fuel cell

Guanshu Li,Yingmin Jin,Yumeng Li,Wenhao Cui,Haojie An,Ruxue Li,Chundong Li

Designing efficient and stable photocathodes remains a critical challenge for advancing high-performance photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC) systems toward simultaneous pollutant removal and energy conversion. Herein, we report a novel Cu-Cu 2 O/carbon nanofibers (CNFs) photocathode, synthesized via an electrospinning-calcination method, in which the Cu-Cu 2 O heterostructures are uniformly anchored onto conductive CNFs rich in oxygen vacancies. As a proof of concept, a dual-photoelectrode PFC system was constructed to evaluate the performance of the Cu-Cu 2 O/CNFs photocathode. The PFC achieved an 83 % degradation rate for Rhodamine B (RhB) in 2 h and a maximum power density (P max ) of 42.99 μW/cm 2 , markedly outperforming the commercial Cu 2 O-based cathode PFC system. Moreover, the PFC system assembled with the Cu-Cu 2 O/CNFs photocathode exhibited consistent degradation efficiency and power output over multiple cycles, demonstrating that the cathode plays a crucial role in ensuring the long-term stability of the system. Experimental and theoretical calculation results confirm that the unique local electronic structure and coordination environment at the Cu/Cu 2 O interface promote O 2 adsorption and lower the energy barrier for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). This work demonstrates a rational strategy for designing high-efficiency Cu-based photocathodes and offers new insights into optimizing photoelectrocatalytic materials for environmental and energy applications.

Silver nanoparticle coupled Cu2O/Ag/Bi2MoO6 Z-scheme heterojunction with enhanced visible light photocatalytic activity for bacteriostasis

Gaojian Lv,Lifang Sun,Hui Gao,Chengcheng Ma,Wen Li,Shougang Chen

The construction of heterojunction has been considered as an effective strategy to achieve charge separation and improve photocatalytic activity. In this work, stable reduced Cu 2 O/Ag/Bi 2 MoO 6 (Cu 2 O/Ag/BMO) nanocomposites with high-efficiency antibacterial activities were synthesized via a simple wet chemical method. After illumination of 30 days, Cu 2 O/Ag/BMO still showed excellent antimicrobial capability against P. aeruginosa and S. aureus . The photoluminescence spectroscopy was used to analyze the electrons and holes recombination efficiency of samples, which suggested Cu 2 O/Ag/BMO could promote electron-hole separation and extend the lifetime of photogenerated carriers. The results of photocurrent responses test suggested that the photocurrent density of Cu 2 O/Ag/BMO was four times stronger than the Cu 2 O, which indicated the higher separation efficiency of electrons and holes pairs for the formed Cu 2 O/Ag/BMO. Besides, density functional theory proved that Ag nanoparticles could promote the electrons transfer from the Bi 2 MoO 6 layer to the Cu 2 O layer which facilitated the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Therefore, electrons and holes could better participate in the redox reactions and then generate more active substances (•OH and •O 2 – ), improving the antimicrobial ability. Therefore, the prepared Cu 2 O/Ag/BMO composites has a great application prospect in the antifouling field.

Synthesis of FeOOH scaly hollow tubes based on Cu2O wire templates toward high-efficiency oxygen evolution reaction

Zhang Yu,Teng Xue-Ai,Ma Ze-Qun,Wang Rong-Ming,Lau Woon-Ming,Shan Ai-Xian

For catalytic materials, the characteristics of one-dimension and hollowness are the promotion factors for their full presentation of catalytic activity, and through a template-assisted method, both above superiorities can be fused simultaneously. Here, we proposed a novel strategy inspired by Pearson’s principle with Cu 2 O wires as templates, and prepared FeOOH hollow tubes, which covered by FeOOH scales. When applied as oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst, the FeOOH scaly hollow tubes (FeOOH SHTs) showed outstanding catalytic activity with a low overpotential of 245 mV to drive a current density of 10 mA·cm −2 , excellent kinetics manifesting as a low Tafel slope of 46.9 mV·dec −1 , and robust stability. This work provides a new synthesis strategy for an ideal OER catalyst, FeOOH, with high inherent activity and enhances the feasibility to broaden the design ideas of transition metal-based catalysts. Efficient degradation of ciprofloxacin by Cu2O/g-C3N4 heterostructures with different morphologies driven under the visible light

Jing Chen,Haitao Zhu,Qifang Ren,Shaohua Chen,Yi Ding,Zhen Jin,Wanmi Guo,Xinyu Jia

In this study, Cu 2 O/g-C 3 N 4 composite with photocatalytic activity was successfully prepared by chemical precipitation method. The catalytic degradation of ciprofloxacin (CIP) by Cu 2 O and Cu 2 O/g-C 3 N 4 composites with different morphologies was investigated. The effective structure and properties of Cu 2 O/g-C 3 N 4 composites were tested by a series of characterization methods. The photocatalytic test results show that the Cu 2 O/g-C 3 N 4 composite photocatalyst has good stability and good photocatalytic performance, which is attributed to the effective hetero-junction structure formed by the combination of Cu 2 O and g-C 3 N 4 , which promotes the interfacial charge separation. The addition of g-C 3 N 4 can reduce the crystal size of Cu 2 O, improve the crystal morphology, and increase its light utilization. Among the synthesized catalysts, the Cu 2 O-3(20%)/g-C 3 N 4 composite has the highest catalytic activity, and the photocatalytic oxidation efficiency of CIP is 96%. By free radical capture and ESR analysis, it was verified that OH, h + and O 2 − radicals may be the main active substances involved in CIP photodegradation. Finally, various degradation products and intermediates of CIP were identified by LC-MS, and the possible conversion pathways were proposed.

In situ synthesis of oxygen-deficient Cu2O on eggshell membranes and study of its efficient photocatalytic activity

Tiantian Wu,Jinxing Cao,Xiaohong Jiang

The conversion of biological waste into high-value-added materials is of great significance for environmental protection and sustainable economic development. Metal nanoparticles should be used in the field of photocatalysis because of their excellent photocatalytic activity and wide selectivity. Green and sustainable carriers play an important role in improving the utilization and recycling of nanoparticles. In this work, we synthesized eggshell membrane (ESM)/ cuprous oxide biomass catalysts from biological eggshell membranes using a biotemplate method, and the biomass catalysts showed an interwoven network structure of uniformly loaded nanoparticles. The results showed that these biomass composites had good photocatalytic activity ( kapp  = 0.0392 min −1 ) for methylene blue (MB), and the eggshell membranes acted as a sacrificial agent during the catalytic process, which effectively inhibited the compounding rate of photogenerated electrons. The photodegradation rate reached about 97 % in 1 h when the adsorbent dosage was 0.025 g, and the dye concentration was 30 mg/L. The present work is important for realizing the integration of biomaterials science and nanoscience.

Simultaneously promoting adsorption and charge separation in Z-scheme ZnO/Cu2O heterojunctions for efficient removal of tetracycline

Jie Cui,Lin Ye,Xiaoxi Chen,Jianing Li,Bian Yang,Man Yang,Qing Yang,Daqin Yun,Shaodong Sun

Exploring novel materials with both high adsorption capacity and photocatalytic properties is urgent in environmental remediation. In this work, a Z-scheme ZnO/Cu 2 O heterostructure with a large surface area of 45.42 m 2 /g was constructed by using the liquid phase reduction method. Compared to pure ZnO and pure Cu 2 O, the as-synthesized ZnO/Cu 2 O nanocomposites exhibited excellent capacity of adsorption and photodegradation for tetracycline (TC), which was degraded 95.3% of TC within 120 min under simultaneous adsorption and photocatalytic processes. Theory and experimental analysis manifested that the excellent adsorption-photocatalytic activity can be attributed to the large BET specific surface area, the efficient charge carrier separation and the high redox capability. The results of this study identified the potential advantages of ZnO/Cu 2 O composites for removing antibiotics to purify water resources and protect the environment.

Electrochemical immunosensor based on hollow Pt@Cu2O as a signal label for dual-mode detection of procalcitonin

Jie Liu,Zixuan Zhang,Jie Dong,Anyi Chen,Jingfu Qiu,Chaorui Li

As a reliable biomarker to evaluate the severity of sepsis, sensitive and accurate detection of procalcitonin (PCT) is essential. In this study, a dual-mode electrochemical immunosensor based on Au/ZIF-8 as substrate and Pt@Cu 2 O as signal label was constructed for the detection of PCT. By loading Au nanoparticles onto rhombic dodecahedral ZIF-8, the substrate (Au/ZIF-8) has large specific surface area and can immobilize antibody (Ab 1 ) by Au–N bonds. Meanwhile, hollow Pt@Cu 2 O nanocomposite with excellent peroxidase-like activity and electrocatalytic activity were synthesized as signal label. In the process of electrochemical testing, Pt@Cu 2 O catalyzed the reduction of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) and further promotes the oxidation of hydroquinone (HQ) to achieve the synergistic amplification of electrochemical signals. The proposed immunosensor detected PCT by amperometric i-t and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) tests with a good linear response and low limit of detection (i-t: 0.70 fg/mL and DPV: 0.40 fg/mL) in the range of 10 fg/mL∼100 ng/mL. The immunosensor exhibited excellent sensitivity and accuracy, indicating the potential application of this method for PCT detection.

Oxygen vacancy–rich Cu2O@Cu with a hydrophobic microenvironment for highly selective CC coupling to generate C2H4

Shanshan Qiao,Yuqing Chen,Yanhong Tang,Jili Yuan,Jiachao Shen,Danyu Zhang,Yi Du,Ziru Li,Dingwang Yuan,Haifang Tang,Chengbin Liu

Cu 2 O is promising to catalytically convert CO 2 into C 2 products by overcoming the instability and slow multi-electron transfer. Regulating catalytic construction and interface microenvironment is challenging to stabilize Cu 2 O and selectively convert CO 2 to C 2+ hydrocarbons. A photocatalyst (Cu 2 O@Cu-CN) of oxygen vacancy–rich Cu 2 O@Cu symbiont embedded in N -doped carbon skeleton is achieved by ligand competition strategy. The Schottky junction and the hydrophobic microenvironment in the catalyst together stabilize the active site against the Cu 2 O redox reaction. The hydrophobic interface can make the catalyst favorable for trapping CO 2 . The asymmetric interface with oxygen vacancy can enhance the adsorption and activation of CO 2 and *CO, thus reducing the energy barrier for the formation of *OCCO intermediates and promoting the coupling conversion of *OCCO to C 2 H 4 . The C 2 H 4 evolution rate reaches 46.27 μmol C2H4 g cat -1 h −1 with a high selectivity of 40.3 % using triethanolamine (TEOA) as a sacrificial agent, and the apparent quantum yield (AQY) is as high as 14.41 % (λ = 420 nm). The C 2 H 4 evolution rate is 2.10 μmol C2H4 g cat -1 h −1 in water without TEOA. Moreover, the productive rate of C 2 H 4 still maintains 95.37 % after lasting 20 h, showing a robust long − term stability.

An Electrochemical Sensor for Sunset Yellow Detection Based on Cu@Cu2O-BNPC Formed by Modified Porous Carbon

Feiyu Yang,Jiamin Wang,Kailiang Yin,Huan Pang

Control and detection of sunset yellow (SY) are an utmost demanding issue due to its high risk of detrimental effects on living systems caused by excessive ingestion. In this study, we reported the synthesis of Cu@Cu2O nanoparticle-decorated B and N codoped porous carbon (BNPC) and its use in developing a novel electrochemical sensor for SY. The Cu@Cu2O-BNPC catalyst was fabricated through single-step polymerization, followed by carbonization. Scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy characterization results showed that Cu@Cu2O anchored on the porous BNPC successfully. Compared with the BNPC-modified electrode, it was found that the Cu@Cu2O-BNPC-modified electrode showed superior electrocatalytic activity in both electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry tests. The as-prepared Cu@Cu2O-BNPC catalyst directly acted as a sensor for amperometric detection of SY without further assembling, which exhibited an ultrahigh sensitivity of 0.09 μA nM–1 cm–2, a low limit of detection (2.4 nM), and a wide linear detection ranging from 10 nM to 8 μM. To further validate its possible application, the proposed method was successfully used for the determination of SY in Fanta drinks with satisfactory results.
