Current perovskite solar cells (PSCs) often use high-purity single-crystal metal oxides prepared by complex growth processes as electron transport layers (ETLs). In particular, TiO2, as an ETL, can deteriorate the stability of PSCs under illumination. Here, we report a passivation strategy using Er-doped TiO2 synthesized with a one-step hydrothermal method as an ETL. Notably, the oxygen-induced defects in TiO2 have decreased to an acceptable level for PSCs due to the introduction of Er3+ ions. More interestingly, we find that a phase junction can be formed in the mixed crystalline rutile/anatase phase of TiO2, and this TiO2 phase junction can achieve efficient charge separation and accelerate internal electron transfer of the ETL. Taking advantage of these facts, we obtain TiO2-based PSCs through a two-step sequential deposition method in ambient air, whose best efficiency increases by 45.8%. Moreover, the Er-doped device exhibits remarkable ultraviolet resistance ability, whose efficiency is maintained over 90% even after 500 hour ultraviolet irradiation. We believe that this demonstrated strategy provides an effective way for preparing efficient and ultraviolet resistant PSCs in air.

Betulinic acid (BA), a naturally occurring lupane-type triterpenoid, possesses a wide range of potential activities against different types of cancer. However, the molecular mechanisms involved in anti-cervical cancer about BA were rarely investigated. Herein, the role of BA in cervical cancer suppression by ROS-mediated endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) and autophagy was deeply discussed. The findings revealed that BA activated Keap1/Nrf2 pathway and triggered mitochondria-dependent apoptosis due to ROS production. Furthermore, BA increased the intracellular Ca 2+ levels, inhibited the expression of Beclin1 and promoted the expression of GRP78, LC3-II, and p62 associated with ERS and autophagy. Besides, BA initiated the formation of autophagosomes and inhibited autophagic flux by the co-administration of BA with 3-methyladenine (3-MA) and chloroquine (CQ), respectively. The in vivo experiment manifested that hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) enhanced the apoptosis induced by BA. For the first time, we demonstrated that BA could initiate early autophagy, inhibit autophagy flux, and induce protective autophagy in HeLa cells. Thus, BA could be a potential chemotherapy drug for cervical cancer, and inhibition of autophagy could enhance the anti-tumor effect of BA. However, the interactions of signaling factors between ERS-mediated and autophagy-mediated apoptosis deserve further attention. Graphical abstract

Long wavelength luminescent NaYF4:Yb,Er/NaGdF4 core–shell upconversion nanoparticles that were synthesized and modified with poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) were used to detect sulfide ions. The NaYF4:Yb,Er/NaGdF4 core–shell upconversion nanoparticles were synthesized to give an emission peak in the red-light region. When the carboxyl-functionalized NaYF4:Yb,Er/NaGdF4 core–shell upconversion nanoparticles and cupric ions (Cu2+) were mixed, the luminescence was quenched because of coordination between the carboxyl of PAA and Cu2+. However, when sulfide ions were added into the system, due to the competitive binding between S2− and Cu2+, the luminescence of the NaYF4:Yb,Er/NaGdF4 core–shell upconversion nanoparticles was recovered. Based on the recovery of the luminescence intensity, a turn-on system for the detection of sulfide ions was designed. Under optimal conditions, the linear range for the detection of sulfide ions ranged from 2.63 × 10−2 to 2.25 × 102 μM (R = 0.99) with a limit of detection for sulfide ions as low as 2.20 × 10−2 μM. The method was successfully applied to sulfide ion sensing in different environments.

Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are one of the most important materials in gas turbine to protect the high temperature components. RETa 3 O 9 compounds have a defect-perovskite structure, indicating that they have low thermal conductivity, which is the critical property of TBCs. Herein, dense RETa 3 O 9 bulk ceramics were fabricated via solid-state reaction. The crystal structure was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman Spectroscope. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to observe the microstructure. The thermophysical properties of RETa 3 O 9 were studied systematically, including specific heat, thermal diffusivity, thermal conductivity, thermal expansion coefficients, and high-temperature phase stability. The thermal conductivities of RETa 3 O 9 are very low (1.33-2.37 W/m·K, 373-1073 K), which are much lower than YSZ and La 2 Zr 2 O 7 ; and the thermal expansion coefficients range from 4.0 × 10 −6 K −1 to 10.2×10 −6 K −1 (1273 K), which is close to La 2 Zr 2 O 7 and YSZ. According to the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) curve there is not phase transition at the test temperature. Due to the high melting point and excellent high-temperature phase stability with these oxides, RETa 3 O 9 ceramics were promising candidate materials for TBCs.

Rare-earth ion (RE3+) doped up-conversion (UC) fluorescent materials and novel fluorescent carbon quantum dots (CDs) have been widely used as traditional anti-counterfeiting materials owing to their excellent optical properties. The drawbacks of these materials are being exposed gradually with the widespread occurrence of counterfeit products in the market because of their single fluorescence mode and easy replication. In this work, we propose a novel strategy to combine both luminescent materials with different modes via a facile solvothermal method. Interesting, the composite materials show unalterable down-conversion (DC) blue light under a 365 nm ultraviolet (UV) analyzer, except for adjustable UC luminescence properties. The UC and DC optical properties are measured and the probable mechanism is proposed, indicating that the dual-mode fluorescence processes are separate and do not interference with each other. Moreover, we use a mixture containing a small number of UCMPs/CDs and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) aqueous solution as a colorless anti-counterfeiting ink, and successfully print a variety of dual-mode fluorescence patterns through the screen printing technique, including QR codes, the logo of Wuhan University, and clover patterns. The composite materials show good dispersion and outstanding dual-mode fluorescence properties, suggesting that they are promising luminescent materials in the anti-counterfeiting field.

Copper selenide (Cu 2 Se) has attracted extensive research interest in the field of thermoelectricity due to its large abundance of constituent elements, environmental friendliness, and excellent thermoelectric properties. In this study, a facile and low-cost hydrothermal synthesis method combined with vacuum sintering was used for Cu 2 Se-based sample preparation, and the possibility of improving the thermoelectric properties of Cu 2 Se by doping with rare earth elements (Tm, Er, Lu) was explored using experimental tests and density functional theory calculations. The electronic structure calculations show that the electrical conductivity is increased due to the increased electron density after rare earth element doping. At the same time, the sharp increase in the density of states at the Fermi level after rare earth element doping enhances the Seebeck coefficient of the Cu 2 Se matrix. The experimental results show that the thermoelectric properties of all the samples doped with rare earth elements (Tm, Er, Lu) were improved compared to the Cu 2 Se matrix. The doping of rare earth elements led to an increase in point defects and the formation of pores in the samples, which play an important role in reducing the thermal conductivity. Among them, the Tm-doped Cu 1.995 Tm 0.005 Se sample reached a maximum ZT value of 0.80 at 773 K, which is a nearly 43% increase compared to the Cu 2 Se matrix (ZT max = 0.56).

Femtosecond laser synthesis and processing of colloids offer a platform for novel nanomaterial synthesis and applications, advancing side by side with high-end material innovations. In this work, RE2(Ce0.2Zr0.2Hf0.2Sn0.2Ti0.2)2O7 (RE = Sm, Eu, Er), one kind of A2B2O7-type (A = rare earth cation, B = tetravalent metallic cation) high-entropy oxide ceramic is chosen as the ablation target for colloid synthesis by femtosecond laser ablation in ethanol. Both surface structural and colloidal morphologies are analyzed to unveil the effects of photothermal (melting) and photomechanical (cracking) phenomena on colloid synthesis. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) jointly show that the synthesized nanomaterials in different sizes and shapes are mainly in the amorphous state, irrespective of the pristine samples’ composition. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) mapping of as-prepared colloids indicates the emergence of elemental segregation, mainly occurring to small particles (mainly <10 nm); whereas for large particles, multiple elements are homogeneous, reflecting the high entropy characteristic of the samples. The discovery of a tailed nanostructure with elongated void embedment indicates special spallation dynamics containing void freezing or bubble capturing. Our findings may help to better understand the ablation dynamics relative to ceramics’ colloid formation. RE2(Ce0.2Zr0.2Hf0.2Sn0.2Ti0.2)2O7 (RE = Sm, Eu, Er) are most frequently considered to be good candidates for next-generation thermal barrier coatings in the film form; downsizing the ceramic dimensions into nanoscale via laser synthesis in liquids may expand its widespread applications in various fields such as optics, photonics, environment, catalysis, and biomedicine.

Considering the vital role of sulfide ions (S 2- ) in food safety, environmental pollution and public health, accurate and efficient detection of S 2- is of great importance. In this study, Er-MOFs with the structure of four-pointed star was successfully designed and synthesized using Er(III) as the metal center and TCPP as the ligand. It is found that host-guest effects occur between Er-MOFs and S 2- , blocking the ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) effect and O-H vibration. This progress leads to the fluorescence signal-on of Er-MOFs and the production of a brown color. In view of this, a Er-MOFs-based sensor was constructed for rapid and on-site monitoring of S 2- in water, which shows the triple-signal outputs including fluorescence, absorbance and smartphone-based RGB analysis with high sensitivity and selectivity. More importantly, the successful measurement of S 2- in real water samples with satisfactory recoveries from 96.26 % to 104.03 %, demonstrating the practicality and effectiveness of Er-MOFs for S 2- recognition. Overall, this assay exhibits the promising applications for S 2- measurement in the fields of environmental pollution and food safety.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a neurovascular complication of diabetes. As a crucial player in the retinal physiology, Müller cells are affected in DR, impairments of Müller cell function lead to retinal malfunctions. Therefore, searching for approaches to mitigate diabetes-induced injury in Müller cells is imperative for delaying DR. Peroxiredoxin 4 (PRDX4), an important endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-resident antioxidant, was explored in this study for its potential protective role against DR. Streptozotocin (STZ)-induced mouse model of diabetes and high glucose (HG)-induced Müller cells were utilized to assess the impact of PRDX4. Compared to wild-type mice, PRDX4 knockout exacerbated retinal neurodegeneration, reactive gliosis, cell apoptosis, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial dysfunction in diabetic retinas. Knockdown of PRDX4 aggravated high glucose (HG)-induced reactive gliosis, apoptosis, ER stress, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial dysfunction in Müller cells. Conversely, PRDX4 overexpression in Müller cells protected against HG-induced cell damage. Mechanistically, PRDX4 promoted the degradation of DPP4, which is associated with DR in type 1 diabetics, thereby alleviating HG-stimulated Müller cell abnormalities. Our study indicated that PRDX4 is a crucial protective regulator in DR progression via destabilization of DPP4 protein and suggested enhancement of PRDX4 level may represent a promising approach for treating DR.

BaTiO 3 -1.6MnO 2 - x Er 2 O 3 ceramics (abbreviated as BMT- x Er) and BaTiO 3 -1.6MnO 2 -3Er 2 O 3 - x MgO ceramics (abbreviated as BEMT- x Mg) were prepared under a reducing atmosphere by solid-state synthesis method in this work. The effects of Er/Mg co-doping on phase transformation, microstructure, dielectric properties, and defect were systematically investigated. Research shows that Er-doping reduces the Curie temperature and increases the dielectric constant of BaTiO 3 ceramics at low temperatures. Mg-doping refines the grain size and makes the grain size distribution more uniform, which is an important reason for the enhanced bias stability. The substitution of Mg at the B-site generates additional oxygen vacancies which capture free electrons and simultaneously forms defect dipoles. The anti-reducing properties are improved by reducing the carrier concentration. The synergistic effect of co-doping forms defect dipoles such as [ Mg Ti ″ ‐ 2 Er Ba ∙ ] , [ Mg Ti ″ ‐ V O ∙ ∙ ] and [ 2 Er Ti ′ ‐ V O ∙ ∙ ] to enhance dielectric relaxation behavior which is considered to be the reason for the improved dielectric temperature stability. When x = 0.4, optimized dielectric ceramics are obtained with ε 25°C = 1820, tanδ = 0.009, resistivity of 1.0 × 10 11 Ω·cm, which meets the EIA X7R standard (−55 °C - 125 °C, TCC ≤ ± 15 %).

A quantitative image analysis and separation system was designed for detection of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) related DNAs in the red region by combining of upconversion luminescence nanoprobe and magnetic beads (MBs). Carboxyl-modified NaGdF 4 :Yb, [email protected] 4 upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) were connected to single-stranded DNA to form a reporter probe, while carboxyl-modified magnetic beads were connected to another single-stranded DNA to form a capture probe. In the presence of target HIV DNAs, NaGdF 4 :Yb, [email protected] 4 UCNPs and magnetic beads were conjugated to form UCNPs-DNA-MBs nanocomplexes through DNA-DNA heteroduplexes based on the principle of complementary base pairing. After magnetic separation, the upconversion luminescence intensity of UCNPs-DNA-MBs nanocomplexes was related to the concentration of the target HIV DNAs. The detection methods were investigated by fluorescence spectrometry and quantitative image analysis based on upconversion luminescence total internal reflection (TIR) imaging platform. Compared to the luminescence spectral analysis, the quantitative image analysis shows higher sensitivity (linear range of 0.02−30 nM and detection limit of 0.0102 nM). More importantly, this method only needs 10 μL sample and the analysis time is about 0.1 s. The method combines quantitative image analysis with magnetic separation technology, which has the characteristics of low background interference and high separation efficiency allowing for application to the field of biology.

Two-dimensional rare earth (RE)-based honeycomb lattice magnets provide a fertile platform for exploring exotic magnetic ground states in view of reduced spatial dimensionality and anisotropic exchange interactions, while the reported 2D honeycomb lattice materials are quite limited. Herein, we report a family of quasi-two-dimensional layered RE-based honeycomb lattice magnets RE2Te4O11 (RE = Gd–Er and Yb), where the magnetic honeycomb layers are well separated by nonmagnetic TeO4 polyhedra with large interlayer distances of 8.353–8.452 Å. Magnetic susceptibility characterizations reveal that all synthesized RE2Te4O11 (RE = Gd–Er and Yb) compounds exhibit dominant antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions; three RE2Te4O11 (RE = Gd, Tb, and Dy) family members show magnetic transitions with Néel temperatures (TN) of 1.97, 3.61, and 2.52 K, respectively. For Tb2Te4O11, a field-induced spin-flop transition is observed below TN = 3.61 K in the isothermal magnetization M(B) curves. Based on the analysis of the magnetocaloric effect (MCE), a crossover behavior is observed from the inverse MCE at low fields (ΔB < 1.8 T) to conventional MCE at high fields (ΔB > 1.8 T) below the TN in Tb2Te4O11; this is in contrast to the conventional MCE in all measured field regions in other RE2Te4O11 compounds.
