The fluorescence-based temperature sensor using temperature-dependent fluorescence properties is a great candidate to replace traditional temperature-measurement detector like thermocouple , because the latter is inaccessible to conquer some special circumstances such as a corrosive environment. In this study, the nano-sized Er 3+ doped NaY(WO 4 ) 2 phosphors were synthesized by solvothermal method. The origins of three emission peaks located at 527 nm, 549 nm and 665 nm were identified. The 2 H 11/2 → 4 I 15/2 (green emission 1) and 4 S 3/2 → 4 I 15/2 (green emission 2) transitions of the Er 3+ ion possessed a temperature dependent behavior over the range of 300–30 K and it was proposed for temperature sensing (optical thermometry) using the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) method. The FIR value of nano-sized phosphors decreased with the decrease of temperature, and the experimental data were well fitted with a theoretical function. A large energy difference (1048.5) was obtained from the fitting curve, which indicate that the sensitivity of nano-sized NaY(WO 4 ) 2 : Er is higher than that of micro-sized one prepared by high temperature solid state reaction. Particularly, at temperatures below 150 K, the sensitivity of nano-sized UC phosphors was enhanced obviously. The results suggested that this nano-sized phosphor could be a splendid option for next generation luminescence-based temperature sensing devices in cryogenic region.

Upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) are widely used as energy donors via a luminescence resonance energy transfer (LRET) technique in biosensing field. To enhance LRET efficiency and afford an improved sensitivity for Cu 2+ detection, sandwich structured NaYF 4 @NaYF 4 :Er 3+ /Yb 3+ @NaYF 4 UCNPs have been designed and prepared. For the core-internal shell-external shell structure, luminescence ions (Er 3+ ) are located in the internal shell near the nanoparticle surface, which is close enough to energy acceptors outside. To study the sensing properties, the UCNPs are used as energy donors and rhodamine B hydrazide (RBH) as energy acceptors to construct the nanoprobes. It is found that the sandwich structured nanoparticles gains more intense luminescence than the naked NaYF 4 :Er 3+ /Yb 3+ UCNPs, which is beneficial to the further improvement of signal sensitivity in biological detection. Moreover, the specificity for detecting Cu 2+ is also checked and found that the designed probe is much more sensitive to Cu 2+ than the other ions including K + , Na + , Li + , Ca 2+ , Ba 2+ , Mg 2+ , Zn 2+ and Sr 2+ . The experiment on the stability of UCNPs-RBH probe and RBH shows the 980 nm laser produces less photodamage to RBH than that of visible light. Therefore, the UCNPs can be used to construct potential probes for realizing effective detection of Cu 2+ .

(5.0%)Er 3+ :Y 3 Al 5 O 12 /Pt-(TiO 2 -Ta 2 O 5 ) powder, as a high effective sonocatalyst, was prepared using sol-gel and calcination method. Then it was characterized by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). In order to evaluate the sonocatalytic activity of the prepared (5.0%)Er 3+ :Y 3 Al 5 O 12 /Pt-(TiO 2 -Ta 2 O 5 ) powder, the sonocatalytic decomposition of ametryn was studied. In addition, some influencing factors such as different Ti/Ta molar ratios on the sonocatalytic activity of the prepared (5.0%)Er 3+ :Y 3 Al 5 O 12 /Pt-(TiO 2 -Ta 2 O 5 ) powder, catalyst added amount with ultrasonic irradiation time and used times on the sonocatalytic decomposition efficiency were examined by using ion chromatogram determination. The experimental results showed that the best sonocatalytic decomposition ratio of ametryn were 77.50% based on the N atom calculation and 95.00% based on the S atom calculation, respectively, when the conditions of 10.00 mg/L initial concentration, 1.00 g/L prepared (5.0%)Er 3+ :Y 3 Al 5 O 12 /Pt-(TiO 2 -Ta 2 O 5 ) powder (Ti/Ta = 1.00:0.25 heat-treated at 550 °C for 3.0 h) added amount, 150 min ultrasonic irradiation (40 kHz frequency and 300 W output power), 100 mL total volume and 25–28 °C temperature were adopted. Therefore, the (5.0%)Er 3+ :Y 3 Al 5 O 12 /Pt-(TiO 2 -Ta 2 O 5 ) composite nanoparticles could be considered as an effective sonocatalyst for decomposition of ametryn in aqueous solution.

Up-conversion materials can be applied in anti-counterfeit fields because of their high concealment and high up-conversion fluorescence efficiency. Herein, different lanthanide ions-doped β-NaYF4 up-conversion micro-particles (UCMPs) with uniform hexagonal morphology were synthesized on a large-scale (more than 0.5 g) via a facile hydrothermal method. It is very interesting to find out the fluorescence intensity and the eventual morphology of the UCMPs were highly dependent on the reaction conditions. Then, the optimal UCMPs with uniform morphology and strong fluorescence intensity were selected as promising candidates for preparing ink. Eventually, we successfully printed designable and multicolor fluorescent patterns on flexible substrates (common paper and polyethylene terephthalate, PET) using the as-prepared β-NaYF4:Yb3+,Tm3+/Er3+/Eu3+ UCMPs inks. Under ambient conditions, the printed patterns on conventional paper are invisible, while such printed patterns on PET are white. However, all the patterns could display blue, yellow-green and green fluorescence patterns under the irradiation of a 980 nm laser when using the β-NaYF4:Yb3+,Tm3+/Er3+/Eu3+ UCMPs inks. We envision that the UCMPs fluorescent inks-based flexible and rapid screen printing patterns have enormous potential for anti-counterfeit and security applications.

In solvothermal synthesis of Er 3+ -doped NaGd 1− x
Yb
x
F 4 nanocrystals, morphology of the nanoparticles is dependent on the molar ratio of the chelating agent (e.g., trisodium citrate) to the lanthanide ions. Usually, addition of chelating agent is reported to be effective only when the molar ratio is below a critical value usually around 1 for the preparation of Er 3+ - and Yb 3+ -doped NaYF 4 nanocrystals. In this work, we found that, by increasing the Yb 3+ concentration, the critical molar ratio can be up to more than 4 in the preparation of Er 3+ -doped NaGd 1− x
Yb
x
F 4 nanocrystals, which provides a new route to control the nanoparticles’ size. The result is particularly useful for the synthesis of small Er 3+ -doped NaGd 1− x
Yb
x
F 4 nanocrystals with high concentration of the Yb 3+ dopant. We also investigated mechanisms on the formation of such particles ( β -NaGd 0.3 Yb 0.7 F 4 :Er 3+ ) with large size in a sub-micrometer scale, i.e., the aggregation-induced crystal growth. In addition, upconversion luminescence properties of the powdery samples were studied, which is shown to be dependent both on size of the nanoparticles and on dosage of the trisodium citrate.

Constructing heterojunction photocatalysts that can make additional utilization of near-infrared (NIR) light has been a global scientific problem and has gained widespread research interest. Upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) collaborate with semiconductors to construct UCNPs-based photocatalysts that are used to improve solar energy utilization. In this work, the as-prepared UCNPs-based photocatalysts consisting of NaGdF 4 :Yb 3+ /Er 3+ (NGFYE) and bismuth oxyiodide (BOI) are synthesized by chemical epitaxial growth method and in-situ calcination process. The crystalline phase , morphology, optical and electrochemical properties of NGFYE@BOI samples are investigated in detail. Besides, Bi 4 O 5 I 2 /Bi 5 O 7 I Z-type heterojunction is confirmed by EPR test. Moreover, the photocatalytic elimination of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) and its photocatalytic mechanism by NGFYE@BOI samples are explored. This work may provide a promising idea for the efficient and controlled synthesis of UCNPs-based photocatalysts, which will contribute to the future utilization of solar energy.

Using nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) as the capping agent, β -NaYF 4 upconversion microcrystals (UCMCs) were successfully synthesized via a hydrothermal synthesis method. Systematic investigations were conducted to evaluate the influence of NTA/Ln molar ratio, NaF/Ln molar ratio, and pH on the morphology, size, and crystal phase characteristics of the UCMCs. Multiple characterization techniques, such as scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD), were employed to elucidate these effects. The experimental findings reveal that these parameters exert a substantial influence on the morphology and size of the UCMCs, with the crystal phase alterations primarily governed by variations in the NaF/Ln molar ratio. Furthermore, a comprehensive exploration of the growth mechanism of UCMCs was undertaken based on the modulation of reaction time. The emission spectra of the synthesized UCMCs were meticulously investigated, unveiling that microcrystals exhibiting larger size and enhanced crystallinity display more pronounced luminescent properties. Comparative analysis with UCMCs synthesized using ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and sodium citrate (Na 3 Cit) as capping agents, which are extensively applied in diverse fields, demonstrated the superior luminescence properties of the newly obtained NTA-UCMCs. In addition, NTA-UCMCs were also employed for the fabrication of transparent and flexible fluorescent films. This research thus presents a novel approach for the synthesis of highly luminescent UCMCs, holding promise for various applications in practical contexts.

This paper reports on microcrystals with deep tissue penetration depth, strong red light emission, and thermometric function. The red light emission of NaLuF 4 :20 % Er 3+ /1 % Tm 3+ /10 % Yb 3+ microcrystals is exceptionally strong, thanks to the introduction of Tm 3+ and Yb 3+ ions energy capture centers. In bioimaging, the 1532 nm laser exhibits deeper imaging depth due to weak photon scattering and autofluorescence. Furthermore, red light emission has the greatest tissue penetration depth in the visible region. The luminescence intensity and tissue penetration depth of both the excitation and emission light make them suitable for deep tissue imaging. We investigated temperature sensing performance of NaLuF 4 :20 % Er 3+ /1 % Tm 3+ /10 % Yb 3+ microcrystals, and found that the maximum relative sensitivity of LIR (I 521 /I 540 ) reaches 0.92 %K −1 . The microcrystals NaLuF 4 :20 % Er 3+ /1 % Tm 3+ /10 % Yb 3+ are anticipated to have application in deep tissue imaging and temperature sensing.

In this research, SrWO 4 substrates co-doped with Eu 3+ and Er 3+ were employed to fabricate phosphors with a homogeneous distribution of Eu and Er. The optimal doping concentrations of Eu 3+ and Er 3+ (3% and 4%, respectively) were determined experimentally, and the luminescence mechanism of the phosphor was thoroughly investigated. The concentration quenching mechanism was also analyzed, and thermal stability tests were performed. The experimental results indicate that, due to the thermal quenching effect, the luminescence intensities of both Eu 3+ and Er 3+ ions gradually decrease with increasing temperature. Based on the experimental findings and numerical calculations, the quenching activation energy was determined. The absolute sensitivity ( S a , 0.417% K −1 and 1.132% K −1 ) and relative sensitivity ( S r , 4.236% K −1 and 1.401% K −1 ) of the phosphors were obtained through simulations, and these values are greater than those reported in previous studies. The phosphors were then mixed with ink, and the obtained mixture was printed to produce a pattern, the colors of which became visible under different excitation light sources. The configuration displays a variety of colors at different temperatures, demonstrates effective applicability for anti-counterfeiting purposes, and exhibits multi-mode anti-counterfeiting functionality. These features indicate that the proposed phosphors meet the requirements of advanced anti-counterfeiting technologies.

Rare earth (RE) ions combined with two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors can exhibit unexpected optical properties. However, fluorescence quenching has always been inevitable due to defects associated with the synthesis and doping of 2D materials. In this work, we reported an efficient upconversion (UC) enhancement of Er3+ doped BiOCl nanosheets, utilizing a defect engineering strategy conversely rather than eliminating defects. Experiments and theoretical calculations provide evidence that oxygen vacancies (OVs) and lattice strain are simultaneously formed in the BiOCl:Er3+ nanosheets through self-doping of Cl− ions. Under 980 nm excitation, samples doped with 300 mol% Cl− ions exhibit the best luminescent emission, and the green and red UC emissions are enhanced 3.5 and 15 times, respectively. We showed that the OVs in the 2D semiconductor can act as energy bridges to transfer charges to the Er3+ energy level, enriching the electron population at the excited levels; while, the lattice strain enhances the energy transfer and charge accumulation, which synergistically enhance the UC luminescence. This research provides a new insight into the development of defect engineering for UC PL in 2D nanomaterials.

Al 2 O 3 : Er 3+ /Yb 3+ transparent ceramics codoped with Zn 2+ ions with intense upconversion and near infrared emission were prepared by conventional solid-state reaction and vacuum and hot isostatic pressing sintering. The effects of Zn 2+ incorporation to the structure, transparent, upconversion and NIR luminescence were discussed in detail. The as prepared Al 2 O 3 ceramics exhibited a total transmittance of ~ 75% in infrared regions (800–3300 nm) and ~ 50% in visible regions (500–800 nm). Under the excitation of a 980 nm laser diode , the as prepared Al 2 O 3 ceramics displayed two tense upconversion emission peaks of a green one centered at 550 nm and a red one centered at 660 nm and a tense near infrared emission peak centered at 1.532 µm, characteristic of Er 3+ emission. Compared with Er 3+ /Yb 3+ doped only, Zn 2+ codoped Al 2 O 3 :Er 3+ /Yb 3+ transparent ceramics showed higher upconversion and near infrared emission of ~ 11 times and ~ 4 times, respectively. The enhancement mechanism due to incorporation of Zn 2+ ions was also discussed in detail.

Dual-band near-infrared (NIR) phosphors simultaneously covering the NIR-I (700-1000 nm) and NIR-II (1000-1700 nm) windows are highly desirable for practical optoelectronic devices, yet conventional rare-earth doped systems typically rely on ultraviolet sensitization. Herein, we report Yb 3+ /Er 3+ co-doped Cs 2 NaHoCl 6 double perovskite microcrystals (MCs) synthesized via a green aqueous-phase evaporation method, in which the intrinsic ∼450 nm absorption of Ho 3+ serves as a self-sensitizer, enabling competitive energy transfer from Ho 3+ to Yb 3+ and Er 3+ , predominantly via dipole-dipole interactions. This generates efficient dual-band emissions at 985 nm (NIR-I) and 1540 nm (NIR-II), with a high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 85.6% under blue-light excitation, alongside excellent thermal stability and photostability. An NIR phosphor-converted light-emitting diode (pc-LED) fabricated with the optimized phosphor demonstrates practical utility in night vision, non-destructive detection, and high-contrast biological imaging. This work establishes an eco-friendly route for mass-producing efficient dual-band NIR emitters directly compatible with commercial blue LED chips.
