Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), as the emerging pollutants, persistently enter the aqueous environment and can be accumulated in aquatic organisms; this has raised the concern that whether fish oil as a kind of fish products used usually for infants has the risk of being contaminated by PPCPs. In this study, we focused on developing a simple and effective method for the determination of four common PPCPs in fish oil using a deep eutectic solvent (DES) as a green solvent in liquid-phase microextraction (LPME) with the aid of sonication. Effects of the extraction method and DES types were studied by traditional one-factor-at-a-time experiment. Influences of extraction time, volume of DES, and extraction cycles on the recovery were investigated, and these parameters were optimized by the Box-Behnken design of experiment. The results show that DES is a good alternative for the extraction of PPCPs in fish oil via sonication, which is a robust method for dispersing this viscous liquid. Under the optimal condition, sonication-assisted LPME based on DES showed a good linearity in the range of 0.1–20 μg L−1 for sulfamethazine, sulfamethoxazole, as well as triclocarban and 0.05–20 μg L−1 for carbamazepine. The recoveries of these four PPCPs were in the range of 87.0–93.8%, and the RSDs varied from 1.6% to 6.0%. Moreover, the limits of detection (LODs) ranged from 16.7 to 33.0 ng L−1. In general, the sonication-assisted LPME based on DES is a green, sensitive, and convenient method for the determination of PPCPs in fish oil.

A novel fluorescent probe based on CdTe QDs coated with molecularly imprinted polymers (MIP) was prepared for the determination of leucomalachite green (LMG) with the method of synchronous fluorescence quenching. When the wavelength interval of excitation and emission positions (Δl) was set as 340 nm, the strongest synchronous fluorescence emission of MIP-coated QDs was achieved at 260 nm, enabling the maximum fluorescent quenching of LMG because of the inner filter effect. According to this principle, a synchronous fluorescence quenching method for the rapid detection of LMG in fish was developed. MIP-coated QDs were synthesized using acrylamide (AM) and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as functional monomers and cross-linker, respectively. MIP-coated QDs with an average diameter around 67 nm were obtained at the optimum conditions (the molar ratio of 1:8:20 of LMG, AM and EGDMA, 60 mL of acetonitrile, 28 h of polymerization time). The synchronous fluorescence of MIP-coated QDs was linearly quenched by LMG at concentrations from 0.1 to 20 μmol L −1 . Detection limit was 30 nmol L −1 (3 σ , n = 9) with spiked recoveries from 94.0% to 107.8% in fish samples. The results indicate that the method can be applied to the accurate and rapid detection of LMG residues in fish samples.

The effects of gelatin-transglutaminase (TG) crosslinking and anti-oxidant types on the stabilization of curcumin in emulsions have not been studied. This work aimed to analyze the effects of bovine bone gelatin (BBG)-TG crosslinking and vitamin (vitamin C, VC; vitamin E, VE) addition on the properties of curcumin/fish oil-loaded gelatin-stabilized emulsions. The BBG-TG was prepared via a crosslinking method and the emulsions were prepared using a homogenization method. The gelatin-TG crosslinking and low-temperature (4 ± 1 °C) storage increased, VC decreased, and VE had no obvious effect on the emulsion creaming stability. The synergetic use of gelatin-TG crosslinking with VC + VE decreased the peroxidation values at day 7 to 2.1 ± 0.2 mmol/kg oil (room temperature) and 1.6 ± 0.1 mmol/kg oil (4 ± 1 °C). The low-temperature storage induced better curcumin retention than both vitamin addition and gelatin-TG crosslinking. In the in vitro digestion process, the gelatin-TG crosslinking increased the transformation, bio-accessibility, and bio-accessibility index of curcumin, whereas it decreased accumulative released free fatty acid percentages. Vitamin addition increased the bio-accessibility and the bio-accessibility index of curcumin in the emulsions after the in vitro digestion process. This work benefited the encapsulation of curcumin and anti-oxidants (VC and VE) in oil-in-water emulsions and its application in dairy functional food development.

The ratiometric fluorescent probe UiO-OH@Tb, a zirconium-based MOF functionalized with Tb3+, was synthesized using a hydrothermal method. This probe employs the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) mechanism between Tb3+and malachite green (MG) for the double-inverse signal ratiometric fluorescence detection of MG. The probe’s color shifts from lime green to blue with an increasing concentration of MG. In contrast, the monometallic MOFs’ (UiO-OH) probe shows only blue fluorescence quenching due to the inner filter effect (IFE) after interacting with MG. Additionally, the composite fluorescent probe (UiO-OH@Tb) exhibits superior sensitivity, with a detection limit (LOD) of 0.19 μM, which is significantly lower than that of the monometallic MOFs (25 μM). Moreover, the content of MG can be detected on-site (LOD = 0.94 μM) using the RGB function of smartphones. Hence, the UiO-OH@Tb probe is proven to be an ideal material for MG detection, demonstrating significant practical value in real-world applications.

A novel strategy was devised to synthesize robust nanocarriers by conjugating fish collagen peptides (FCP) with Ampelopsis grossedentata polysaccharide (AGP), culminating in the creation of FCP-AGP nanoparticles (FCAGPs) for advanced drug delivery systems. The innovative approach entailed the systematic investigation of particle size, zeta potential, and surface hydrophobicity alterations in FCAGPs upon varying AGP concentrations. The optimized FCAGP-4 nanoparticles, boasting a precisely engineered AGP content of 2.0 % (w/v) and an average particle diameter finely tuned to 353.2 ± 10.5 nm, demonstrated outstanding characteristics in dispersibility, stability, and emulsifying capacity. Furthermore, the water contact angle of FCAGP nanoparticles notably increased from 46.3 ± 2.8° to 70.2 ± 5.6°, indicating enhanced surface hydrophobicity. The mechanism by which FCAGP nanoparticles were attached to the surface of oil droplets to stabilize the emulsions was elucidated by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Significantly, a modified sample pretreatment technique was employed to demonstrate clearly the emulsion phase interface on the SEM.Innovative FCAGP-stabilized Pickering emulsions achieved 65.39 % in DMY bioavailability, facilitating its slow-release and enhanced bioaccessibility during in vitro digestion. Pickering emulsions loaded DMY demonstrated improved stability and sustained release under simulated digestive conditions, bolstering its therapeutic efficacy. Our findings solidify the theoretical basis for green synthesis of propeptide-polysaccharide nanoparticles and introduce a novel strategy for targeted propeptide Pickering emulsions in drug delivery, highlighting the transformative potential of FCAGP nanoparticles in enhancing lipophilic drug bioavailability and pharmacological impact.

Arsenic (As) speciation and bioaccumulation in fish muscle tissues have been intensively investigated in marine ecosystem. However, little is known about these in freshwater fish. In this study, freshwater fish including 120 specimens and 8 species were collected from the Xiang River, a typical mine-impacted river in China. Six As species including arsenite (AsIII), arsenate (AsV), monomethylarsonic acid (MMA), dimethylarsinic acid (DMA), arsenocholine (AsC) and arsenobetaine (AsB) were simultaneously separated and determined using HPLC-ICP-MS. The mean (± SD) concentration of total As (tAs) in the dried fish muscle was 0.748 ± 0.651 mg·kg − 1 . AsB was found as the predominant As species in most of the studied fish samples, in accordance with the reports in marine fish. However, the diversity of inorganic/organic As proportion observed in the studied freshwater fish species was larger than that in marine fish species due to greater spatial variability of As contamination, mobilization and origination in the studied catchments. The percentage of AsB (AsB%) in fish muscle was irrelevant to tAs concentration, while the percentage of iAs (iAs%) decreased with tAs concentration in a hyperbolic pattern. This can be attributed to restricted assimilation and accumulation of toxic iAs with increasing tAs concentration in fish. Chronic non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks were evaluated through Monte-Carlo simulation. The result indicated that consuming freshwater fish in the Xiang River could cause considerable carcinogenic risk to local inhabitants.

Protein glutaminase (PG; EC 3.5.1.44) is a class of food-grade enzyme with the potential to significantly improve protein functionality. However, its low catalytic activity and stability greatly hindered industrial application. In this study, we employed structural-based engineering and computational-aided design strategies to target the engineering of protein glutaminase PG5, which led to the development of a combinatorial mutant, MT8, exhibiting a specific activity of 31.1 U/mg and a half-life of 216.2 min at 55 °C. The results indicated that the flexible region in MT8 shifted from the C-terminus to the N-terminus, with increased N-terminal flexibility positively correlating with its catalytic activity. Additionally, MT8 notably boosted fish myofibrillar proteins (MPs) solubility under the absence of NaCl conditions and enhanced their foaming and emulsifying properties. Key residues like Asp 31 , Ser 72 , Asn 121 , Asp 471 , and Glu 485 were crucial for maintaining PG5-myosin interaction, with Ser 72 and Asn 121 making significant energy contributions.

The purpose of the present work was to encapsulate zingerone (a bioactive compound from ginger) by self-assembling peptides derived from fish viscera. The encapsulation conditions were investigated and the structure of fish peptides-zingerone complex was characterized. The interaction between zingerone and fish peptides was investigated using fluorescence spectroscopy. Further research was performed on the in vitro release of zingerone and fish peptide-zingerone as well as their antiproliferative effects on colon epithelial Caco-2 cells. The results demonstrated that zingerone can be successfully encapsulated by self-assembling peptides derived from fish viscera with high encapsulation efficiency and loading capacity. Furthermore, transmission electron microscope and confocal laser scanning microscope observations revealed the successful encapsulation of zingerone by fish viscera peptides. In addition, in vitro release and antiproliferative activity against Caco-2 cells can be significantly increased by encapsulating zingerone via peptide self-assembly. The current study advances knowledge of encapsulation of bioactive compounds through peptide self-assembly.

Solar energy-driven steam generation is a renewable, energy-efficient technology that can alleviate the global clean water shortage through seawater desalination. However, the contradiction between resistance to salinity accretion and maintaining high water evaporation properties remains a challenging bottleneck. Herein, we have developed a biomimetic multiscale-ordered hydrogel-based solar water evaporator for efficient seawater desalination. The as-prepared solar water evaporator consists of highly ordered ultralong hydroxyapatite (HAP) nanowires as a supporting backbone and heat insulator, MXene as a sunlight absorber, and hydrophilic hyaluronic acid methacryloyl (HAMA) as an interfacial bonding agent, and a modifier to reduce the water evaporation enthalpy. The MXene/ultralong HAP nanowires/HAMA (MHH) photothermal hydrogel evaporator with the multiscale-ordered hierarchical structure mimics the fish-gill structure. The highly ordered alignment of ultralong HAP nanowires is realized at multiple scales, from the nanoscale to the microscale to the macroscale and from 1D to 2D to 3D in the as-prepared photothermal hydrogel evaporator. The high-performance MHH photothermal hydrogel water evaporator exhibits high efficiency of photothermal conversion, low water evaporation enthalpy, excellent heat management capability, and high solar water evaporation performance. The water evaporation enthalpy decreases from 2431 J g–1 (pure water) to 1113 J g–1 using the MHH photothermal hydrogel evaporator. As a result, the high-performance MHH hydrogel water evaporator can realize a high water evaporation rate of 6.278 kg m–2 h–1 under one sun illumination (1 kW m–2). Moreover, the as-prepared MHH hydrogel evaporator is able to achieve a water evaporation rate of 4.931 kg m–2 h–1 using the real seawater sample, exhibiting excellent salt-rejecting performance. It is expected that the as-prepared MHH hydrogel evaporator has promising applications in high-performance seawater desalination and wastewater purification using the sustainable solar energy.

In this study, amine vapor-sensitive films with ratiometric fluorescence attributes were developed. The pH-sensitive fluorescein 8-hydroxypyrene-1,3,6-trisulfonic acid trisodium salt (HPTS) and its tetraphenylethylene derivative (TPB) were selected as ratiometric indicators and incorporated into a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix to produce HPTS/TPB-PVA films. The films responded well to amine vapors, and the interference of aromatic vapors did not substantially affect the fluorescence signals of the films. Under UV light at a wavelength of 365 nm, the fluorescence of the films changed from dark pink to light pink and finally to yellow when the freshness of the fish was visually checked during storage. In addition, the color difference values of the films showed a positive correlation with the total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N), ranging from 12.7 to 24.8 mg/100 g at 25 °C and 8.4 to 25.6 mg/100 g at 4 °C, respectively. This indicates that fluorescent films have good potential for quantifying fish freshness in the near future when connected to an automatic data processing system based on color differences.

Smart packages based on natural pigment and macromolecular exhibited great potential in fresh meat but were limited by their poor stability and hydrophobic properties. Herein, we designed a stable smart packaging consisting of a series of preservation films (GPEF series) and smart labels (GPEF-C series), through emulsification and polyelectrolyte complexation. Cinnamic acid-chitosan nanoparticles (CC NPs) were used to prepare gallic acid-garlic essential oil W/O/W emulsions (EC) and emulsions loaded with curcumin (EC-Cur). The added emulsions and in-situ generated calcium CaHPO 4 nanoparticles significantly improved the hydrophobicity of films (WCA 111.3°–124.8°). As the emulsion concentration increased, films exhibited significant enhancement in antioxidant activity (50.2%–97.6%), antimicrobial properties (12.4%–99.8% against E. coli , 89.9%–100% against S. aureus ) and UV shielding properties (transmittance 0.7%–5.1%). Moreover, these films were environmentally friendly and degraded in soil after 10 days. GPEF-C 3 and GPEF-C 5 showed excellent color and fluorescence stability after 4.5 months, as well as pH response between pH 8–13. Compared with PE, GPE 5 F extended the shelf life of fish at 4 °C from 3 days to 5 days, and the color/fluorescence response of GPEF-C 3 exhibited consistency with TVB-N and CFU, which could accurately reflect the freshness of fish in real-time. Smart packaging based on GPE 3 F and GPEF-C 3 was a prospective option for preserving and monitoring fresh meat.

Simple SummaryThe coexistence of two environmental pollutants, glyphosate (GLY, a widely used herbicide) and microcystin-LR (MC-LR, a toxic byproduct from harmful algal blooms) has become an issue that cannot be ignored. The adverse effects of both individual and combined exposures to GLY and MC-LR on aquatic organisms warrant increasing attention. This study demonstrates that exposure to GLY and MC-LR, either individually or in combination, can induce toxic effects on fish gill structure, potentially impairing their physiological function and ultimately threatening fish survival. Overall, the findings of this study not only enhance our understanding of the detrimental impacts of these pollutants on aquatic animals but also provide valuable insights for ecological and health risk assessments.Glyphosate (GLY) and microcystin-LR (MC-LR) frequently co-occur in natural water bodies. In this study, a subacute exposure test was conducted on zebrafish treated with 3.5 mg/L GLY and 35 μg/L MC-LR, individually and in combination, for 21 d to determine their effects on the gills of zebrafish and their potential mechanisms. The hematoxylin and eosin staining and scanning electron microscopy examination results showed that GLY and MC-LR exposure caused structural damage to gills. Biochemical analysis revealed Na+-K+-ATPase activity decreased, and the levels of reactive oxygen species, 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine, and malondialdehyde increased, inducing oxidative damage to DNA and lipids of gills. Meanwhile, the inflammatory and immune function of the gill was significantly influenced, as evidenced by the alteration of the expression of tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-1β, complement 3, and immunoglobulin M. RNA-seq results revealed that GLY and/or MC-LR treatment induced transcriptional changes in the fish gills, which may affect various biological functions, and the lipid metabolism disruption potentially involved in the aforementioned process. Integrating histopathological, biochemical, and transcriptomic analyses, this study revealed that both individual and combined exposures to GLY and MC-LR had adverse effects on zebrafish gills, with combined exposure appears to result in more pronounced adverse effects, potentially compromising fish health.
