Chemodynamic therapy (CDT) is an innovative cancer treatment strategy that leverages Fenton or Fenton-like reactions to convert hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) in the tumor microenvironment (TME) into highly cytotoxic hydroxyl radicals (•OH). However, the therapeutic efficacy of CDT against tumor cells is limited by two primary constraints: 1) insufficient H 2 O 2 levels in the TME, which restricts •OH generation; and 2) elevated concentrations of reduced glutathione (GSH) in the TME, which neutralizes excess reactive oxygen species (ROS). To address these challenges, this study developed a nanoplatform based on mixed micelles composed of two distinct polycarbonate materials. One polycarbonate is conjugated with cinnamaldehyde (CA) via side chains to form a polymeric prodrug, enabling pH-responsive release of CA. The other polycarbonate chelates Fe 3+ through side-chain carboxyl groups to initiate Fenton-like reactions. In the acidic TME, the mixed micelles release CA, which elevates intracellular H 2 O 2 levels, thereby overcoming the limitation of inadequate H 2 O 2 supply in tumor cells. Simultaneously, the Fe 3+ complex within the micelles depletes GSH, reducing it to Fe 2+ , which triggers Fenton-like reactions that amplify ROS production, thus enhancing CDT efficacy. Additionally, pH-triggered disassembly of the micelles in the acidic TME releases encapsulated doxorubicin (DOX), which induces tumor cell apoptosis by damaging DNA, further augmenting antitumor therapeutic outcomes. The nanocarrier developed in this study integrates a synergistic strategy of “H 2 O 2 elevation and Fenton-like reaction” with chemotherapy, significantly improving tumor cell eradication and demonstrating substantial potential for cancer treatment.

As a conceptual study for low-energy hydrogen production, potentially coupled with off-grid photovoltaics, this work focuses on overcoming the constraint of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which features a high anode potential and significant overpotential. To reduce energy consumption, the Fe2+oxidation reaction is employed to replace OER, coupled with Fe2+regeneration using natural biomass. Experimental results reveal that Fe2+oxidation reaction is an effective substitute, with an initial oxidation potential of 0.5 V (vs. Hg/Hg2SO4), much lower than that of OER. Fe2+regeneration is notably influenced by both biomass type and reaction temperature. Chlorella pyrenoidosa (CP) achieves the highest Fe3+reduction rate of 90.5% at 190 °C. Water-soluble organic compounds generated during biomass oxidation exert a negative impact on Fe2+electrooxidation by accumulating on or coating the electrode surface, and the compounds derived from CP exert a less detrimental effect. Moreover, enhancing magnetic stirring, elevating temperature, and selecting an appropriate anode material can significantly boost the oxidation reaction. Under optimized conditions, the current density during electrolysis of CP filtrate at 1.1 V reaches 280 mA/cm2, much higher than values reported in similar studies. This highlights the great potential of this co-electrolysis approach for efficient hydrogen production driven by off-grid photovoltaic power.

Acetyl-CoA (AcCoA) functions as a pivotal metabolic node that regulates diverse cellular pathways in organisms (e.g., microalgae). Real-time monitoring of intracellular metabolites is essential for elucidating complex biological processes. However, conventional methods for AcCoA detection often suffer from limitations, including cumbersome procedures, substantial matrix interference, dependence on advanced instrumentation, and inadequate sensitivity for trace-level analysis in biological matrices. To address these challenges, this study developed a fluorescent switch biosensor for AcCoA detection based on iron ion (Fe 3+ )-mediated fluorescence modulation. The sensor utilizes nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) synthesized through pyrolysis of sodium alginate and melatonin. The resulting amorphous N-CDs (average diameter: 3.75 nm) exhibit strong blue fluorescence. The biosensor demonstrates high sensitivity and selectivity, achieving a linear detection range of 1–200 μM with a LOD of 0.268 μM. Moreover, owing to the low cytotoxicity and rapid response of the N-CDs, the system enabled real-time monitoring of AcCoA in live microalgal cells, showing a linear fluorescence response in Ochromonas sp. cultures across volumes ranging from 0.8 to 10 mL. This work provides a robust and biocompatible platform with significant potential for advancing AcCoA-related biological research.

M-type strontium ferrite (SrFe 12 O 19 ) is widely used in various fields due to its low cost and excellent stability. However, its relatively low saturation magnetization ( M s ) significantly restricts its broader applications. Enhancing M s through non-rare-earth doping via the solid-state reaction method is of significant practical importance. The primary challenge lies in simultaneously maintaining lattice stability and regulating Fe 3+ spin alignment through doping. In this study, a series of non-rare-earth Nb–Zn co-doped SrFe 12- x (Nb a Zn b ) x O 19 ( a : b = 1:1, a : b = 4:5, x = 0.1–0.5) were synthesized using the solid-state reaction method. XRD phase analysis indicated that a single M-type strontium ferrite phase was obtained at the stoichiometric doped ( a:b = 1:1). In contrast, for the non-stoichiometric doped ( a:b = 4:5), a trace amount of the secondary phase SrNb 0.5 Fe 0.5 O 3 was detected in Nb–Zn doped samples with x ≥ 0.2. M s of both stoichiometric and non-stoichiometric doped samples increased within the range of 0≤ x ≤ 0.3 but gradually decreased when x exceeded 0.3. Notably, for the composition with a : b = 4:5, M s reached a maximum value of 79.33 emu/g at x = 0.3, accompanied by a synchronous enhancement of 18.5 % in coercivity ( H c ). Raman spectroscopy analysis revealed the enhancement mechanism of M s : the synergistic occupation of Nb 5+ and Zn 2+ ions. Specifically, Zn 2+ preferentially occupies the 4f 1 tetrahedral sites, while Nb 5+ incorporates into the 4f 2 sites. This co-substitution effectively replaces the spin-down Fe 3+ ions, leading to a significant increase in M s . The presence of a trace amount of the secondary phase SrNb 0.5 Fe 0.5 O 3 in the non-stoichiometrically doped samples, effectively inhibited grain growth, thereby contributing to the enhancement of H c . This study successfully synthesized non-rare-earth-doped strontium ferrite materials via a solid-state reaction method, achieving a significant enhancement in M s . Furthermore, the underlying mechanism for the improvement in M s through Nb–Zn co-doping was elucidated for the first time. Our findings are of significance for the development of high-performance, cost-effective ferrite materials.

In this work, an efficient Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) system has been prepared using carbon dots (CDs). A one-step method has been developed using β-cyclodextrin and tryptophan to synthesize the novel CT-CDs with FRET properties. The FRET was found to occur within the CT-CDs from the tryptophan moiety to the CDs. The FRET efficiency of the system increased with excitation time, reaching a maximum efficiency after 120 min. The CT-CDs were then evaluated in Fe3+ detection application, and showed selective and sensitive detection of Fe3+ over 14 other metal ions.

A highly selective and sensitive optical sensor was developed to colorimetric detect trace Fe3+ions in aqueous solution. The sensor was the sulfasalazine (SSZ) functionalized microgels (SSZ-MGs), which were fabricated via in-situ quaternization reaction. The obtained SSZ-MGs had hydrodynamic radius of about 259 ± 24 nm with uniform size distribution at 25 °C. The SSZ-MG aqueous suspensions can selectively and sensitively response to Fe3+ions in aqueous solution at 25 °C and pH of 5.6, which can be quantified by UV-visible spectroscopy and also easily distinguished by the naked eye. Job’s plot indicated that the molar binding ratio of SSZ moiety in SSZ-MGs to Fe3+was close to 1:1 with an apparent association constant of 1.72 × 104M−1. A linear range of 0–12 μM with the detection limit of 0.110 μM (0.006 mg/L) was found. The obtained detection limit was much lower than the maximum allowance level of Fe3+ions in drinking water (0.3 mg/L) regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of the United States. The existence of 19 other species of metal ions, namely, Ag+, Li+, Na+, K+, Ca2+, Ba2+, Cu2+, Ni2+, Mn2+, Pb2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Co2+, Cr3+, Yb3+, La3+, Gd3+, Ce3+, and Bi3+, did not interfere with the detection of Fe3+ions.Keywords:functional microgels;sulfasalazine;Fe3+detection;optical response

As a widely produced and used antibiotic, tetracycline (TC) has been frequently found in rivers, soil and drinking water . In this study, the degradation of TC was investigated by UV/Fe 3+ /persulfate (PS) coupled process. The degradation behavior was well fitted with pseudo-first-order model. Hydroxyl radicals (·OH), sulfate radicals (SO 4 − ·) and superoxide radical (O 2 − ·) were identified as the primary reactive oxygen species (ROS) in UV/Fe 3+ /PS process, the contribution to TC degradation were found to be 41.94%, 33.94% and 17.44% at pH 3.0, respectively. Fe(IV) generated from the system also played a crucial role in TC removal. The effects of process parameters (PS/Fe 3+ dosages, pH, humic acid , Cl − , HCO 3 − , NO 3 − and CO 3 2− ) on degradation were investigated. It was found that the degradation of TC was highly pH-dependent, and the optimal performance was obtained at pH 3.0. Except for Cl − , the presence of HA, HCO 3 − , NO 3 − and CO 3 2− inhibited TC degradation. The possible transformation pathway involving the hydroxylation, N -demethylation, hydrogenation and dehydroxylation was proposed. Furthermore, the toxicity and mutagenicity of TC and transformation products (TPs) were estimated using ECOSAR and TEST softwares, demonstrating that the toxicity level of most TPs was lower/equal to their precursors. The evaluation of DBPs showed that UV/Fe 3+ /PS process could reduce the potential of DBPs formation, especially for TCAA and TCM. Microbial community composition was analyzed by 16 S rDNA sequencing, and the relative abundance of ARG-carrying opportunistic pathogens was significantly declined after UV/Fe 3+ /PS treatment. In general, this study provides an economical, efficient and safe strategy for TC removal.

The fluorescent boron, nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon dots (BNSCDs) were prepared by simple hydrothermal reaction of 4-carboxyphenylboronic acid and 2,5-diaminobenzenesulfonic acid at 200 °C for 8 h. The fluorescence of the BNSCDs could be quenched by Fe 3+ based on the electron transfer between Fe 3+ and BNSCDs, so a label-free, good selectivity and high sensitivity method for Fe 3+ determination was established with linear range and LOD of 1.5–692 μmol/L and 87 nmol/L, respectively. And then the fluorescent probe was employed for detection of Fe 3+ in tap water, coal gangue, fly ash and food samples successfully. Moreover, the as-prepared BNSCDs could serve as a novel pH fluorescent probe in the range of pH 1.60–7.00, which could be attributed to the proton transfer of carboxyl groups on the surface of BNSCDs. More importantly, the pH fluorescent probe possesses fast, real-time and low toxicity, applying for intracellular pH fluorescence imaging in HIC, HIEC, LO2 and SMMC7721 cells. In view of its simplicity, timely response and outstanding compatibility, the as-fabricated BNSCDs show the potential applications in water quality and solid waste monitoring, food detection, real-time measuring of intracellular pH change in vitro.

Blue-light-excitable near-infrared (NIR) emitting materials exhibit significant potential for compact light sources in bioimaging, nondestructive detection, and night vision. However, achieving efficient NIR-II/III (1000–1800 nm) emission under blue excitation remains challenging due to the large excitation–emission Stokes shift and the forbidden nature of f – f or d – d transitions. In this study, we report on the Ni 2 + -doped monoclinic double perovskite Ca 2 ScTaO 6 , which exhibits broadband NIR-II/III with a full width at half maximum of 240 nm and a photoluminescence quantum yield of approximately 21% when excited at 425 nm. The incorporation of Fe 3+ ions significantly improves the photoluminescence quantum yield to approximately 37% through energy transfer pathways from Fe 3+ to Ni 2+ and crystal field modulation. Structural and spectroscopic investigations reveal the presence of Fe 3+ ions at various lattice sites, resulting in localized distortions that facilitate the relaxation of d – d transitions in Ni 2+ . A prototype NIR light-emitting diode utilizing Ca 2 ScTaO 6 :Fe 3+ , Ni 2+ exhibits strong NIR-II/III emission, facilitating the visualization of subsurface damage in various materials, including fruits, capsules, meat, and silicon wafers. This work demonstrates an effective strategy for designing blue-light-excitable NIR materials through synergistic energy transfer and crystal field engineering.

A simple method was developed in the synthesis of fluorescent carbon dots (referred to as M-CDs), calcined treatment of mangosteen pulp in air, without the assistance of any chemical reagent. The M-CDs possess good-solubility, satisfactory chemical stability and can be applied as the fluorescent temperature probe. More strikingly, the fluorescence of M-CDs can be fleetly and selectively quenched by Fe 3+ ions. The phenomenon was used to develop a fluorescent method for facile detection of Fe 3+ with a linear range of 0–0.18 mM and a detection limit of 52 nM. Eventually, the M-CDs were applied for cell imaging, demonstrating their potential toward diverse applications.

Fe3+-activated luminescent materials have recently evoked considerable interest owing to their environmentally friendly and versatile applications potential. In this study, novel Li2MgTi3O8: Fe3+ phosphors are synthesized and its luminescence properties were systematically investigated. The Li2MgTi3O8: Fe3+ phosphor exhibits a broad excitation spectrum covering the ultraviolet–visible region from 250 to 600 nm. Upon 417 nm excitation, the as-prepared phosphor shows a broad far-red emission band centered at 709 nm due to the 4T1 (4G) → 6A1 (6S) transition of Fe3+ ions, along with a good internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of 39%. Importantly, the emission band of phosphors can be well matched with the absorption spectra of plant pigments. Furthermore, the temperature sensing properties of the phosphor samples were analyzed by using the fluorescence intensity (FI) and fluorescence lifetime (FL) technique, achieving maximum relative sensitivities (Sr) of 1.73% K–1@423 K and 3.52% K–1@373 K, respectively. These results indicate that Li2MgTi3O8: Fe3+ phosphors have potential applications for optical thermometry and plant growth illumination.

P(NIPAM-AM)/CS/TA-Fe 3+ hydrogel integrates NIR actuation and self-sensing. • Optimized network enables a 4.7 s fast response and 104° maximum bending. • TA-Fe 3+ coordination offers a high photothermal conversion efficiency of 27.76%. • Linear resistance-strain mapping predicts bending angles with ≤ 2.67% error. • The dual-function material allows real-time feedback for closed-loop control. Conventional hydrogel actuators often suffer from single functionality and a lack of real-time state feedback, restricting their potential in closed-loop control and intelligent applications. To address this, we designed a synergistically crosslinked composite hydrogel based on poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylamide) (P(NIPAM-AM)), tannic acid-iron ion (TA-Fe 3+ ) complexes, and chitosan (CS). This hydrogel integrates near‑infrared (NIR)‑driven actuation with resistive self‑sensing and exhibits excellent shape programming and multidirectional actuation capabilities. By systematically optimizing the composition, the hydrogel with 0.1 mL of CS solution achieves a rapid response time of only 4.7 s and a maximum bending angle of 104°. Furthermore, at an Fe 3+ content of 120 mg, the hydrogel demonstrates a high photothermal conversion efficiency of 27.76% and an initial conductivity of 2.549 (Ω·m) −1 . It exhibits excellent self-sensing characteristics, with a bending gauge factor of 0.019 and high angle-sensing accuracy with an error of ≤ 2.67%.
