Synergistic oxygen plasma and variable-valence metal (Ni/Mn) doping strategy engineering enhanced low-temperature H2S sensing mechanism in In2O3 nanotubes

Yuchen Jiang,Jiaru Yang,Linlin Dong,Xiaolian Liu,Lanlan Guo,Yingli Yang,Jianliang Cao,Yan Wang,Guodong Wang

Hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S), as a highly toxic gas, poses severe threats to human health when its concentration exceeds safety thresholds. Therefore, it is crucial to develop H 2 S sensors with high response, excellent selectivity and fast response characteristics. In this work, we successfully synthesized In 2 O 3 -based nanotubes through a synergistic strategy combining variable-valence metal ion doping (Ni, Mn) and oxygen plasma treatment, achieving ultra-sensitive H 2 S detection at a low operating temperature of 75°C. Remarkably, the oxygen plasma-treated Ni-doped In 2 O 3 nanotubes (denoted as Ni-In 2 O 3 -plasma) exhibited outstanding sensing performance to 5 H 2 S gas: An unprecedented response value of 6601.4, a low detection limit of 100 ppb and superior anti-interference selectivity. Moreover, in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectra (DRIFTS) proves the possible products in the gas-sensing reactions. Mechanistic investigations through electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed that the enhanced performance is mainly attributed to the two synergistic effects of abundant oxygen vacancies and high Ni 3 + /Ni 2⁺ ratio in the composite materials. This study provides an efficient and controllable optimization strategy for the development of high-performance metal oxide semiconductor (MOS)-based H 2 S sensors.

Fabrication of Pd/In2O3 Nanocatalysts Derived from MIL-68(In) Loaded with Molecular Metalloporphyrin (TCPP(Pd)) Toward CO2 Hydrogenation to Methanol

Zhongjie Cai,Meng Huang,Jiajun Dai,Guowu Zhan,Fu-li Sun,Gui-Lin Zhuang,Yiying Wang,Pan Tian,Bin Chen,Shafqat Ullah,Jiale Huang,Qingbiao Li

Methanol synthesis from CO2 hydrogenation with H2 produced from renewable energy has emerged as a promising method for carbon neutrality. The supported Pd/In2O3 catalyst has attracted great attention due to its superior activity and methanol selectivity, but the formation of the In–Pd bimetallic phase upon over-reduction would lead to quick catalyst deactivation. In this work, we elucidate the reduction behavior of Pd/In2O3 catalysts by using TCPP(Pd)@MIL-68(In) as precursors. During catalyst fabrication, metalloporphyrins (viz., TCPP(Pd)) served as both a capping agent for the growth of MIL-68(In) and a shuttle for transporting the Pd2+, which enhanced the dispersion of Pd0 species on In2O3–x during the calcination and reduction treatments and prevented the formation of In–Pd bimetallic phase by over-reduction. With a low Pd loading of 0.53 wt %, the resultant Pd/In2O3 catalyst exhibited a maximum methanol space–time yield of 81.1 gMeOH h–1 gPd–1 with a CO2 conversion of 8.0% and a methanol selectivity of 81% over 50 h on stream (295 °C, 3.0 MPa, 19,200 mL gcat–1 h–1). In contrast, the comparative Pd/In2O3 catalyst prepared by the impregnation of PdCl2 in MIL-68(In) showed poor activity and stability due to the formation of InPd/In2O3–x surface structures. In addition, we found a strong connection between the reduced degree of In2O3 and the catalytic performance of the supported Pd/In2O3 catalysts by integrating catalyst characterization results with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Interestingly, the surface In/O ratio detected by XPS can reflect information about both metal–support interaction and the amount of oxygen vacancy, which is highly related to the catalytic activity. The DFT calculation also shows that the Pd/In2O3 catalyst has excellent thermodynamic selectivity for the CH3OH product. This work provides an alternative synthetic strategy for Pd/In2O3 nanocatalysts and sheds light on the deactivation mechanism of the supported catalysts.

Based Nafion gas sensor utilizing Pt-MOx (MOx = SnO2, In2O3, CuO) sensing electrode for CH3OH detection at room temperature in FCVs

Weijia Li,Lingchu Huang,Tong Wang,Xidong Hao,Bin Wang,Qi Lu,Xishuang Liang,Fengmin Liu,Fangmeng Liu,Chenguang Wang,Geyu Lu

The development of high-performance gas sensors for detecting trace amount of CH 3 OH is an essential and a challenging task for safety using fuel cell vehicles (FCVs). In this work, the metal oxides (SnO 2 , In 2 O 3 , CuO) are employed as the catalyst carrier materials in fuel cell type sensors for the first time to replace traditional carbon, with which the Pt/MO x based fuel cell type sensors are fabricated. Among them, Pt/SnO 2 based sensor displays the lowest detection limit because SnO 2 carrier can not only support Pt particles but also provide an appropriate number of electrons for Pt, which is beneficial to reduce the adsorption strength of the intermediates and then improves the catalytic ability. The detection limit is as low as 0.5 ppm, the lowest of the various types of CH 3 OH sensors that work at room temperature. Moreover, the Pt/SnO 2 based fuel cell type sensor displays the characters of high selectivity, good repeatability and robust moisture resistance. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report employing MO x as the catalyst carrier materials in fuel cell type sensors.

Interfacial elaborating In2O3-decorated ZnO/reduced graphene oxide/ZnS heterostructure with robust internal electric field for efficient solar-driven hydrogen evolution

Shudong Liang,Dai Jin,Yongjun Fu,Qingzhuo Lin,Rongbin Zhang,Xuewen Wang

Solar-driven hydrogen evolution over ZnO-ZnS heterostructures is considered as a promising strategy for sustainable-energy issues. However, the industrialization of this strategy is still constrained by suppressed carrier migration, rapid charge recombination, and the inevitable utilization of noble-metal particles. Herein, we envision a novel strategy of successfully introducing In 2 O 3 into the ZnO-ZnS heterostructure. Benefiting from the optimized internal electric field and the charge carrier migration mode based on the direct Z-scheme, the interfacial elaborating In 2 O 3 -decorated ZnO/reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/ZnS heterostructure manifests smooth charge migration, suppressed electron–hole pair recombination, and increased surface active sites. More importantly, the in situ introduction of In 2 O 3 optimizes the construction of the internal electric field, favoring directional light-triggered carrier migration. As a result, the light-induced electrons generated from the heterostructure can be efficiently employed for the hydrogen evolution reaction. Hence, this work would shed light on the in situ fabrication of noble-metal-free photocatalysts for solar-driven water splitting.

Zn-In-O electrocatalysts with co-existing ZnO and In2O3 phases for efficient reduction of CO2 to formate through sacrificial mechanism

Yayu Guan,Jiaying Yan,Yuyu Liu,Fanghua Ning,Jin Yi,Jiujun Zhang

Electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction (eCO 2 RR) is considered an efficient approach to produce value-added chemicals and fuels. In this paper, a series of MOF-derived composite catalysts with coexisting In 2 O 3 and ZnO are fabricated using a simple process for eCO 2 RR to produce formate. The Zn-In-O/800 catalyst achieves a formate Faradaic efficiency (FE HCOO− ) of 94.25 % at −1.16 V vs. RHE, which can maintain over 89 % after 30 h in a stability test. The electrochemical evidence and density functional theory analysis show that the strong interface effect between In 2 O 3 and ZnO can enhance the CO 2 adsorption and activation, and promote the conversion of CO 2 to formate. In addition, the ZnO phase can protect In 2 O 3 , as the main active site, from being reduced to a certain extent for a long time under negative potential, which ensures the high stability of the composite catalyst.

Fabrication of In2O3/Co3O4-palygorskite composites by the pyrolysis of In/Co-MOFs for efficient degradation of methylene blue and tetracycline

Jixiang Xu,Jianyang Gao,Yong Liu,Qingyun Li,Lei Wang

A facile method for fabrication of In 2 O 3 /Co 3 O 4 @palygorskite composites from a Co/In-based metal-organic framework (MOF) was reported. First, Co/In-MOFs hybridized with palygorskite (PAL) was prepared via a one-pot solvothermal method. Second, In 2 O 3 /Co 3 O 4 @PAL composites were obtained by pyrolysis of In 2 O 3 /Co 3 O 4 @PAL in air. It was found that the In 2 O 3 /Co 3 O 4 @PAL composite exhibited higher photocatalytic activities than In 2 O 3 /Co 3 O 4 to the degradation of MB and TC under visible-light irradiation. About 99% of MB (within 40   min) and 80% of TC (within 120   min) were degraded using In 2 O 3 /Co 3 O 4 @5.0%PAL as catalyst. It was supposed that the efficient adsorption of MB and TC, and electrostatic interactions between electron–hole and PAL were responsible for such improvement. The photocatalytic degradation mechanisms of MB and TC on the In 2 O 3 /Co 3 O 4 @PAL were investigated. This work shows that hybridization MOFs with PAL could enhance the photocatalytic properties of MOFs-derived metal oxides for water treatment.

Fabrication and application of ZIF-8 derived In2O3-ZnO nanocomposites for ultra-sensitive NO2 sensing under UV irradiation at room temperature

Xingyu Kang,Jianhui Lv,Lei Han,Bin Huang,Huizhang Zhao,Dong Wang,Hairui Fang

Nitrogen oxide (NO 2 ) is common by-products of industrial production, posing significant health risks to workers. Therefore, real-time monitoring of NO 2 is crucial. In this study, innovative In 2 O 3 -ZnO nano-materials were prepared by combining In 2 O 3 with ZIF-8 via electrospinning, for detecting trace amounts of NO 2 at room temperature (RT). Compared to pure In 2 O 3 , the In 2 O 3 -ZnO nano-materials (V2) with a 10 % weight ratio of ZIF-8 exhibited a significantly higher response (389.99) and a faster response time (16.9 s) to NO 2 under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation at RT. The superior gas sensing performance of the V2 nano-materials is attributed to the formation of n-n heterojunctions, enhanced optical absorption, increased oxygen vacancy ratio, and excellent dispersion among the nano-materials. The results demonstrate that V2 nano-materials can detect NO 2 at parts-per-billion (ppb) levels at RT, making them suitable for monitoring trace amounts of NO 2 in open environments. Furthermore, a portable real-time NO 2 monitoring device was constructed using V2 as the sensing material, an LM358-based amplifier circuit for data acquisition, an STM32F103C8T6 microcontroller as the main control unit, and a buzzer as an alarm device. Compared to devices using a helical Ni-Cr wire as an indirect heat source, this integrated NO 2 detection device offers real-time alarms with lower energy consumption. This application not only enhances worker health and safety in industrial environments but also demonstrates higher energy efficiency in practical application.

Insights into the roles of the MgO additive in crystal structures, sintering behaviors, and optical properties of transparent In2O3 semiconductor ceramics

Bo You,Bin Lu,Dazhen Wu,Ruijie Pei

MgO was found to be a good sintering aid for densification of several types of ceramics; however, the previous reports seldom provided persuasive evidence to support their proposed functional mechanism. In the present work, we successfully fabricated polycrystalline transparent In2O3 semiconductor ceramics using MgO as an additive and offered vital insight into the additive roles in sintering behavior and optical properties, which are conducive to mastering the microstructure evolution principle and interaction function mechanism. The oxygen defect and solute drag mechanisms have combined effects on the sintering of MgO-doped In2O3 ceramics. Additionally, MgO also helps to improve the thermal stability. At the optimized MgO content of 0.5 at%, the In2O3 ceramic sintered at 1600 °C under an oxygen atmosphere achieves an in-line transmittance of 63.0% at 633 nm (∼83% of the theoretical transmittance of a perfect In2O3 single crystal) with a fine average grain size of ∼9.7 μm. Upon deep UV excitation, the transparent In2O3 semiconductors exhibit broad spectral bands covering from the near-UV to the entire visible region, where the dominant ∼493 nm cyan light derives from the deep-level defect emission. The MgO dopants enhance the photoluminescence intensity and prolong the deep-level fluorescence lifetime. The cathodoluminescence spectra show broad orange emission, with the emission centers located at 626 and 613 nm for the intra-grain and grain-boundary regions, respectively. The integral intensity of cathodoluminescence increases as the acceleration voltage increases, while the intensity in the grain interior is much higher than that on the grain boundary at each voltage.

Laser-induced fabrication of In2O3-incorporated surface defects-enriched porous graphene electrodes for high-performance supercapacitors with excellent mechanical flexibility and cyclability

Yunhao Chang,Lishi Jiao,Mengqiang Hou,Enze Zhu,Junling Liu,Sen Chen,Huan Wang,Jian Qi

Electronic devices are trending toward smaller, thinner, lighter, and more flexible designs. Laser-induced graphene (LIG) is a cost-effective, flexible, and electrically superior alternative for next-gen wearable and portable gadgets. However, LIG-based supercapacitors (LIG-SCs) face limitations in practical use due to their low energy density, owing to the small surface area of LIG electrodes and few electrochemically active sites. To address these limitations, the current work employs a two-step laser scanning strategy to in situ synthesize interdigitally structured three-dimensional porous In 2 O 3 -LIG composite electrodes. The prepared In 2 O 3 -LIG-4-9.5-SC device demonstrates remarkable performance enhancements: an areal specific capacitance of 60.5 mF/cm 2 at 20 μA/cm 2 current density (representing a 115-fold improvement over pristine LIG), coupled with superior power density (0.008 mW/cm 2 ) and energy density (5.38 μWh/cm 2 ). Furthermore, the device exhibits exceptional cycling stability with 90.1% capacitance retention after 10,000 charge–discharge cycles, along with stable performance under various bending conditions. The two-step laser scanning protocol works synergistically to create almost dual enhancements. It increases the surface area through secondary scanning and enriches the LIG framework with C-C=O hydrophilic functional groups. Meanwhile, the incorporation of In 2 O 3 nanoparticles introduces structural disorders or defects and additional electrochemically active sites into the LIG framework. This synergistic optimization mechanism effectively overcomes the inherent limitations of LIG-SCs.

Atomic-level steering of charge flow from type-II to S-scheme in In2O3/BiOCl via vacancy–metal pairs for CO2 photoreduction

Jie Huang,Ziang Zong,Penghui Wang,Hong Zhou,Yuxuan Zhang,Zhanjun Li

Photocatalytic CO₂ reduction is a promising route for solar fuel production, yet it is often hampered by inefficient charge separation and compromised redox power in conventional heterojunctions. Here, we report a thermal-mediated strategy that intelligently reconfigures the charge transfer pathway in In 2 O 3 /BiOCl heterojunctions from a conventional Type-II to a S-scheme. This transition is driven by the in situ formation of synergistic dual defects—oxygen vacancies and metallic bismuth—enabled by precise solvothermal control. The oxygen vacancies serve as efficient CO 2 adsorption and activation sites, while metallic Bi functions as effective electron bridges. This defect synergy collectively reconstructs the interfacial electronic structure, as directly evidenced by in situ XPS and EPR and confirmed by DFT calculations, which reveal a reversed band alignment conducive to S-scheme charge flow. The resulting S-scheme In 2 O 3 /BBC-Ov heterojunction (InBBC-4) achieves a superior CO production rate of 96.11 μmol g −1  h −1 with 96.7 % selectivity, substantially outperforming its Type-II counterpart. This work offers profound atomic-level insights and establishes a simple thermal-tuning paradigm for designing high-performance photocatalysts through defect-mediated control of charge pathways.

Modification of In2O3 by electronic promoters to regulate electron transfer behavior of CO2/H2O adsorption and the selectivity of photocatalytic CO2 reduction

Hong Wang,Zhongming Wang,Mingquan Xiao,Zizhong Zhang,Xianzhi Fu,Wenxin Dai

Improving product selectivity is the most important goal for the artificial photosynthesis of CO2 and H2O considering that the adsorption behaviors of reactants may play an important role in the product selectivity of CO2 conversion. In this work, a black In2O3 sample was modified with fluoride anions (F−) as electron donors or amino ions (NH2+) as electron acceptors. F-modified In2O3 provided additional F− and In2+ sites, which promoted H2O to accept more electrons from the material, and exhibited a high selectivity to CH4 of 81.95%. NH2-modified In2O3 caused H2O to donate electrons to the material by constructing a hydrophobic layer, resulting in a high combined selectivity to methanol and carbon monoxide of 87.64%. Based on the two different H2O adsorption behaviors at In2+ sites adjacent to oxygen vacancy defects (VO–In2+) or at In3+ sites, the respective formation of hydrogen ions (H+) or protons (*H) is key to regulating the product selectivity of CO2 reduction. The formation of a confined-space structure of CO2 and its capacity to accept more electrons from the material induced by a higher number of VO–In2+ sites after modification both ensure the proceeding of CO2 reduction. The findings presented in this work add to the understanding of artificial photosynthesis.

Au Nanoparticle and CdS Quantum Dot Codecoration of In2O3 Nanosheets for Improved H2 Evolution Resulting from Efficient Light Harvesting and Charge Transfer

Dandan Ma,Jian-Wen Shi,Diankun Sun,Yajun Zou,Linhao Cheng,Chi He,Zeyan Wang,Chunming Niu

Au nanoparticle (NP)- and CdS quantum dot (QD)-codecorated In2O3 nanosheets, assembled into flowerlike structure (In2O3/Au/CdS), were synthesized to facilitate photocatalytic H2 production. The optimized In2O3/Au4/CdS-12 (4 wt % Au NPs and CdS QDs were deposited for 12 cycles) displays achieved a photocatalytic hydrogen generation ability of 17.23 μmol/h (10 mg of catalyst), which is 22.97, 5.08, and 5.05 times as high as that of pristine In2O3 (0.75 μmol/h), In2O3/Au4 (3.39 μmol/h), and In2O3/CdS-12 (3.41 μmol/h), respectively. This significant improvement of H2 generation rate can be attributed to the following factors: the heterojunction at the In2O3–CdS interface and the Schottky barrier at the interface between In2O3–Au and CdS–Au improves the migration and separation of charge carriers, and the surface plasma resonance (SPR) effect of noble metal Au NPs enhances the light harvesting capacity of In2O3 and boosts the generation of hot electrons, efficiently improving the utilization rate of sunlight.
