Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are a potential class of nanomaterial for antibiosis and chemotherapeutic effects against human carcinoma cells. However, the DNA-damaging ability of free AgNPs pose the critical issues in their biomedical applications. Herein, we demonstrated a facile method to capture Ag + ions and reduce them into active AgNPs within Zr-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) of UiO-66 with a mild reductant of DMF (AgNPs@UiO-66(DMF)). The average diameters of UiO-66 carriers and AgNPs were facilely controlled to be 140 and 10 nm, respectively. The obtained UiO-66 nanocarriers exhibited excellent biocompatibility and could be effectively endocytosed by cancer cells. Additionally, the AgNPs@UiO-66(DMF) could rapidly release Ag + ions and efficiently inhibit the growth of cancer cells. The half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC 50 ) values of the encapsulated AgNPs were calculated to be 2.7 and 2.45 μg mL −1 for SMMC-7721 and HeLa cells, respectively, which were much lower than those of free AgNPs in the reported works. Therefore, the developed AgNPs@UiO-66(DMF) not only maintained the therapeutic effect against cancer cells but also reduced the dosage of free AgNPs in chemotherapy treatment.
A mild reduction process was developed for the fabrication of AgNPs@UiO-66, which exhibited efficient induction of apoptosis in cancer cells.

Engineering MOFs nanocrystals into hierarchical/macroscopic structures is critical for many applications. However, defects between MOFs nanocrystals often exist due to the uncontrollable nucleation and growth in MOFs crystallization. In our study, inspired by biomineralization processes in nature, we report a facile and generic method to prepare [email protected] capsules with defect-free MOFs layer through controlled interfacial mineralization. Specifically, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) and polydopamine (PDA) capsules are used to prepare the [email protected] capsules. The PDA capsules are exploited to confine Zn 2+ ions within the capsule lumen and on the capsule wall. When incubated into a solution of 2-methylimidazole (2-MeIm), Zn 2+ ions on the capsule wall will trigger the interfacial nucleation of ZIF-8, while Zn 2+ ions in the capsule lumen will diffuse into the capsule wall and react with 2-MeIm, enabling the growth and formation of defect-free ZIF-8 nanolayer. The molecule-sieving property of [email protected] capsules is tested by the controlled permeation of small molecules (methylene blue, 6.0 × 13.8 Å 2 ) through the capsule wall, conferring the enzyme-embedded [email protected] capsules with the unique features of on/off control of enzymatic reactions over multiple reaction cycles, and high stability of entrapped enzymes against long-term storage. Through changing the species of polymer capsules, shapes of polymer capsules and species of MOFs, a series of [email protected] capsules are prepared, highlighting the versatility and functionality extension of this interfacial mineralization method.

Plasmonic materials are fundamental photosensitizer materials for photocatalytic reactions. Various structures, including core–shell types, satellite types, and distribution types, have been designed and prepared for the optimization of photocatalytic reactions. However, understanding the profound enhancement mechanism of various structures is still challenging. Thus, the plasmonic coverage is considered to be an index for analyzing the influence mechanism. Here, Au@Ni-MOF core–shell flower sphere-like photocatalysts are prepared, and the size of the flower sphere can be precisely regulated by varying the amount of Au. Thus, different plasmonic coverages are realized through the tuning of spheres of different sizes. The high plasmonic coverage of catalysts can enhance visible light absorption, facilitate the generation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs, and shorten the photogenerated carrier transport distance. Moreover, the exponential relationship between the photocatalytic hydrogen production performance and the plasmonic coverage can also be used as a guide for material design. As a result, a photocatalytic hydrogen production rate of 3389 μmol·g–1·h–1 is achieved in the Au@Ni-MOF sample with high plasmonic coverage, which will advance the plasmonic application in photocatalytic reactions.

Pomegranate is very favored but highly susceptible to lead contamination that threatens consumer health, and thereby it is essential to establish efficient modes to monitor lead level in pomegranate. A specific and sensitive electrochemical sensor was developed for assessing lead pollution in pomegranate based on Pb 2+ -dependent DNAzyme as recognition receptor and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for signal output. Particularly, the used MOFs exhibited Fenton-like catalytic functions toward methylene blue (MB) as electroactive medium. Integrating with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), the Fenton-like MOFs showed high sensitivity for electrochemical detection of Pb 2+ in pomegranate. Moreover, benefiting from the specific recognition of DNAzyme to Pb 2+ , the adjustable strategy was achieved, in which the approaching MB led to a higher signal with the absence of Pb 2+ while the detached MB gave rise to a lower signal with the presence of Pb 2+ . With the use of Fenton-like catalytic MOFs driving electrochemical aptasensing interface, this simplified detection pattern was endowed with sensitive assessment of lead pollution level in pomegranate, highlighting its promising potential in evaluating the safety of foodstuffs.

The detrimental effects on human health and ecological security caused by antibiotic pollution of the aquatic environment have attracted widespread attention. The development of more effective materials is urgently needed for antibiotic removal. In this paper, a mesoporous composite of SiO 2 /UIO-66–400 was prepared via a solvothermal reaction. The synthesized SiO 2 /UIO-66–400 has a good recycling performance (four times). Adsorption kinetics can be observed that the adsorption equilibrium can be reached within 120 min. At a pH of 7.00, a temperature of 5°C and an adsorbent dose of 0.25 mg·mL −1 , the adsorption capacity of the SiO 2 /UIO-66–400 for 200 mg·L -1 ofloxacin (OFL) can be up to 77.60 mg·g −1 . The interactions at the adsorbent-adsorbate interface are multifaceted, encompassing scenarios of monolayer and multilayer adsorption. Several attractive forces such as pore filling, electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding, and π-π attraction are identified as the primary drivers of antibiotic from water.

The selection of different organic ligands when synthesizing metal organic framework (MOFs) can change their effects on the adsorption performance. Here, four La-MOFs adsorbents (La-SA, La-FA, La-TA and La-OA) with different organic ligands and structures were synthesized by solvothermal method for phosphate adsorption, and the relationship between their adsorption properties and structures was established. Among four La-MOFs, their phosphate adsorption capacities and adsorption rates followed La-SA > La-FA > La-TA > La-OA. The results indicated that average pore diameter played a key role in phosphate adsorption and there was a positive correlation between average pore diameter and adsorption capacity ( R 2 = 0.86). Coexisting ion experiments showed that phosphate adsorptions on three La-MOFs (La-SA, La-FA and La-TA) were inhibited in the presence of CO 3 2− and HCO 3 − . The inhibition of CO 3 2− was the most pronounced and the results of redundancy analysis pointed out that it was mainly due to the change of pH value. In contrast, La-OA showed enhanced phosphate adsorption in the presence of CO 3 2− and HCO 3 − , and the combination of pH experiments showed that phosphate adsorption by La-OA was increased under alkaline conditions. Further combined with FT-IR, XRD , high resolution energy spectra of XPS (La 3d, P 2p and O 1s) and XANES , the adsorption mechanisms were derived electrostatic attraction , chemical precipitation and inner sphere complexation, and the last two were identified as the main mechanisms. Moreover, it can be identified from XPS 2p that the phosphate adsorption on La-FA and La-OA were mainly in the LaPO 4 state, while La-SA and La-TA mainly existed in the form of LaPO 4 ·xH 2 O crystals and inner sphere complexes. From the perspective of material morphology, this work provides a thought for the rational design of MOFs with adjustable properties for phosphate adsorption.

A series of graphene-modified copper–metal–organic framework composites (G-Cu-MOF-0.3, G-Cu-MOF-0.5, G-Cu-MOF-1) were fabricated via a solvothermal method. Structural characterizations verified that graphene was successfully composited without damaging the Cu-MOF crystalline framework, among the four materials, G-Cu-MOF-0.5 exhibits the largest specific surface area and pore size. Electrochemical results showed that G-Cu-MOF-0.5 displayed the best CO₂ electroreduction performance, with a current density of − 11 mA cm⁻², a double-layer capacitance (Cdl) of 4.97 mF cm⁻² and a Tafel slope value of 36.5 mV dec⁻¹. At − 1.5 V vs. RHE, the total Faradaic efficiency for CH₄ and CO reached 24% with stable operation over 12 h. Graphene modification significantly improves the conductivity, active site density, and structural stability of Cu-MOF, realizing efficient and controllable CO 2 conversion to C1 products. The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) remains the dominant side reaction, and the Faradaic efficiency toward CH 4 is still moderate, leaving room for further selectivity optimization. This work provides a feasible strategy for designing MOF–carbon composites for electrocatalytic CO₂ reduction to methane.

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have shown great
potential in catalytic oxidative desulfurization (ODS), yet their
efficiency is often hampered by intrinsically inaccessible pore networks
that impede the contact between active sites and reactants. To unlock
the potential of these confined pores, we report a defect engineering
strategy to construct multivariate MOFs by incorporating sulfonated
linkers, which effectively induces linker vacancies to generate defect-fused
pores (DFPs). These DFPs not only expand the pore aperture to 14.8
Å, leading to a 1.8-fold enhancement in dibenzothiophene adsorption
capacity, but also modulate the electronic structure of Zr nodes,
enhancing their electrophilicity. As a result, the optimized MTV-UiO-20
achieves an exceptional desulfurization efficiency of 99.9%, significantly
outperforming pristine UiO-66 (58.3%) under identical conditions.
Combined experimental and theoretical studies reveal that the gate-opening
effect facilitated by DFPs promotes reactant accessibility to active
sites, while hydroxyl radicals generated from H 2 O 2 activation dominate the oxidation process. This work provides a
rational design strategy for activating MOF catalysts through synergistic
pore and defect engineering.

Developing advanced adsorbents with both high selectivity and low regeneration energy remains a central challenge in realizing energy-efficient CO2 capture technologies. In this work, we report an ultramicroporous metal–organic framework, PCP-IPAN, designed with CO2-philic electrostatic cavities to promote strong yet thermally tunable interactions with CO2 molecules. Notably, the framework exhibits highly temperature-sensitive adsorption profiles, characterized by a sharp reduction in CO2 uptake within a narrow temperature range (273–323 K). This significant thermal sensitivity enables a large working capacity and ensures facile desorption at mild temperatures, which is a key requirement for reducing the energy penalty in pressure- and temperature-swing adsorption (P/TSA) processes. Single-component adsorption measurements reveal that PCP-IPAN-Co achieves high CO2 capacities of 4.60 and 3.32 mmol g–1 at 273 and 298 K (1.0 bar), respectively. Furthermore, it delivers CO2/N2 (15/85) IAST selectivities of 71.6 and 99.3, alongside CO2/CH4 (50/50) IAST selectivities of 39.8 and 19.6 at these temperatures. Dynamic column breakthrough experiments for CO2/N2 and CO2/CH4 binary mixtures confirm the material’s excellent separation selectivity, and vacuum pressure swing adsorption (VPSA) simulations demonstrate its efficient separation energy consumption during cyclic operation. These findings highlight PCP-IPAN as an efficient platform for carbon capture.

Owing to their high density of active coordination sites, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been extensively explored for uranium(VI) removal. However, the adsorption performance of pristine ZnHHTP is often limited by strong interlayer π-π stacking interactions, which reduce the effective porosity, hinder mass transport, and restrict the accessibility of uranium-binding sites. Herein, we demonstrate a facile ammonia-triggered assembly and etching strategy to construct defect-rich hierarchical pores within ZnHHTP nanostructures. Morphological and structural characterizations demonstrate that ammonia modulation introduces abundant mesopores into the originally low-porosity framework, creating a hierarchical architecture. This structural evolution leads to a significantly increased specific surface area, enriched defect sites, and enhanced surface hydrophilicity. Consequently, the optimized m-ZnHHTP-25 exhibits outstanding uranium(VI) elimination performance, reaching near-equilibrium within only 100 min and a remarkable maximum adsorption capacity of 521.41 mg·g −1 . Mechanism studies revealed a synergistic effect contributing to the enhanced performance. The hierarchical mesopores function as ion-transport channels, significantly accelerating the mass transfer kinetics. Moreover, the abundant and highly accessible defect sites function as high-density binding locations, where catechol oxygen atoms form strong chemical coordination bonds with UO 2 2+ . This study not only presents a promising candidate material for radioactive wastewater treatment but also offers a powerful protocol for rationally designing hierarchical porosity in porosity-deficient coordination networks for environmental remediation.

Tb-MOFs embedded in agarose hydrogel form a flexible, anti-aggregation film for easy retrieval. • Malachite green quenches fluorescence via energy transfer, enabling visible color change within 5 min. • Integrated with a smartphone RGB colorimeter, the platform achieves 1.73 μM detection limit with reliable recovery. A flexible Tb-MOFs@agarose hydrogel film was developed as a smartphone-assisted fluorescence sensing platform for the detection of malachite green (MG). The Tb-MOFs are spatially confined within a hydrophilic agarose network, and upon MG exposure, the system exhibits a distinct ‘bright-green to dark-green’ fluorescence transition within 5 min at 60 °C (or within approximately 40 min at room temperature) via fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) from Tb 3+ to MG. A Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model was further developed to enable automated image recognition from smartphone-captured fluorescence images. Under optimized conditions (pH 6.0, 60 °C, 0.03 mg/mL Tb-MOFs), the platform shows a linear detection range of 5–140 μM with a limit of detection of 0.63 mg/L. Recoveries of 75.5–127.6% (RSD < 5.4%) were obtained in crucian carp, shrimp, and lake-water samples, with negligible interference from seven co-existing antibiotics. This simple, low-cost approach offers a practical solution for field screening of prohibited MG residues in aquatic products. The direct conversion of photocatalytic CO 2 reduction under moderate circumstances has emerged as an advanced method of mitigating greenhouse effect and energy crisis. The rationally modified approaches of MOFs at atomic scale offers opportunities for promoting stability and activity. In this work, we synthesized a series of Co Zn bimetallic MOFs photocatalysts through a dual-metal site (cobalt and zinc) strategy, achieving the regulated coordination of metal atoms to efficiently balance the behaviors of photogenerated charge separation, structural stability and reaction kinetics. The synergistic effect was ensured by the isostructural nature of Co-tz and Zn-tz, thereby exhibiting remarkably promoted photocatalytic performance in carbon reduction rates. The optimized CoZn-tz (1:1) catalyst exhibits exceptional catalytic performance in converting carbon dioxide to CO under 300 W xenon lamp, achieving a conversion yield of 7.3 μmol/g/h with no liquid-phase by-products outperforms monometallic analogues. This study emphasizes valuable insights into synergistic interplay of solid-solution bimetallic architecture, paving the rational design of MOFs-based photocatalysts towards highly efficiency in CO 2 reduction.
