N -acetyl- l -cysteine-capped Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots (QDs) were prepared by hydrothermal methods. It could emit phosphorescence at 583 nm with the excitation wavelength at 315 nm. The phosphorescence intensity of QDs could be quenched dramatically by increasing the concentration of Co 2+ ion. The novel phosphorescence sensor based on N -acetyl- l -cysteine-capped QDs was developed for detecting Co 2+ ion with a linear dynamic range of 1.25 × 10 –6 –3.25 × 10 –5 m . The limit of detection and RSD were 6.0 × 10 –8 m and 2.3%, respectively. Interference experiments showed excellent selectivity over numerous cations such as alkali, alkaline earth and transitional metal ions. The possible quenching mechanism was also examined by phosphorescence decays. The proposed phosphorescence method was further applied to the trace determination of Co 2+ ion in tap and pond water samples with recoveries of 97.75–103.32%. Mn-doping into CdS quantum dots (QDs) has been demonstrated a useful way to enhance the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of quantum dot sensitized solar cells (QDSCs), the detailed systematic study is needed to get a better fundamental understanding. This work focuses on the study of the effects of Mn dopant on light harvesting, charge transfer, and charge collection of the solar cells. The results indicate that the Mn-doping into CdS QDs increases the light absorbance and extends the light absorption range, which results in the enhancement of the photo-generated current density. In addition, both the electron transport rate and the electron diffusion length are also increased with the introduction of Mn dopant. So the charge collection efficiency ( η cc ) of the solar cell increases from 89.9% for CdS sample to 96.7% for Mn/CdS sample. As a result, the PCE of Mn/CdS QDSC reaches 3.29%, which is much higher than that of CdS QDSC (2.01%).

Solid-solution phase K(Mn,Zn)F3 mesoporous microspheres have been successfully prepared via a simple one-pot hydrothermal method by using citrate ions as a chelating agent. Effects of the reaction time on the phase transformation and morphological evolution of the K(Mn,Zn)F3 microspheres have been carefully investigated. The results revealed that the hierarchical mesoporous spherical structures with a solid-solution phase were formed from a core–shell structure with mixed phases via the nanoscale Kirkendall effect. It is noted that Yb3+/Er3+-codoped K(Mn,Zn)F3 microspheres exhibit intense single-band red up-conversion emission with environmental responsivity upon excitation using a 980 nm laser diode, indicating a promising potential biomedical application for drug delivery.

Since the widespread use of antibiotics, the residues of antibiotics have frequently been detected in various water sources, making antibiotic pollution an urgent environmental issue. In this paper, one-step green synthetic reduced graphene/manganese nanoparticles (rGO/Mn NPs) composites have been utilized as a novel environmentally-friendly catalyst for tetracycline (TC) removal. The results demonstrated that rGO/Mn NPs exhibit excellent adsorption performance for TC, and can efficiently activate sodium persulfate (PDS) to oxidize and degrade TC. Furthermore, the rGO/Mn NPs adsorption-oxidation system (85.2%) was more effective than the adsorption process (70.9%) in removing TC (50 mg L −1 ). Free radical quenching experiments and EPR results elucidated that singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) and superoxide radicals (·O 2 − ) are the primary reactive species responsible for the degradation of TC in the oxidation system. Based on the characterization results, a mechanism of oxidative degradation of TC by rGO/Mn NPs has been proposed. To further elucidate the degradation pathway of TC, the degradation products were identified by high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS). This analysis provides a foundation for understanding how the rGO/Mn NPs composites activate PDS to degrade TC. Additionally, the ecological structure-activity relationship analysis revealed that TC is converted into intermediates with lower toxicity.

Inorganic nanofibers have emerged as a promising frontier in biomedical research thanks to their unique nanomorphology and bioactivity. Furthermore, the ions released from these inorganic biomaterials play a crucial role in determining cell identity and driving tissue-specific functions. Notably, Cu and Mn, which are essential trace elements in the human body, play significant roles in promoting bone health and participating in metabolic processes. Therefore, in this study, a series of Cu/Mn-doped SiO2–CaO composite nanofibers (CNFs) prepared by sol–gel electrospinning were obtained, and their morphology, flexibility, mineralization property, photothermal property, and antibacterial activity were studied. Experimental research has shown that the 2.5Cu and 2.5Mn CNFs calcined at 800 °C have the best flexibility, and as the Cu/Mn content or calcination temperature increases, the flexibility of CNFs decreases. In addition, 10Cu and 10Mn CNFs calcined at 800 °C have the best photothermal property, reaching temperatures of 65 and 62 °C under near-infrared irradiation (NIR) of 2 W cm–2 in the wet state, respectively, and the increase in calcination temperature results in decreased photothermal temperatures. The bacterial inhibition rates of CNFs (5Cu and 5Mn) with and without NIR are over 89 and 68%, respectively. The mineralization experiment also proved that Cu/Mn-doped CNFs have excellent mineralization activity. Therefore, these Cu/Mn-doped CNFs with excellent flexibility, photothermal property, mineralization activity, and antibacterial ability show great application potential in the treatment of tumors and bone defect-related diseases.

Regulating interfacial active sites to improve peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation efficiency is a hot topic in the heterogeneous catalysis field. In this study, we develop an inverted loading strategy to engineer asymmetric Mn–O V –Ce sites for PMS activation. Mn 3 O 4 @CeO 2 prepared by loading CeO 2 nanoparticles onto Mn 3 O 4 nanorods exhibits the highest catalytic activity and stability, which is due to the formation of more oxygen vacancies (O V ) at the Mn–O V –Ce sites, and the surface CeO 2 layer effectively inhibits corrosion by preventing the loss of manganese ion active species into the solution. In situ characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) studies have revealed effective bimetallic redox cycles at asymmetric Mn–O V –Ce active sites, which promote surface charge transfer, enhance the adsorption reaction activity of active species toward pollutants, and favor PMS activation to generate (•OH, SO 4 •− , O 2 •− and 1 O 2 ) active species. This study provides a brand-new perspective for engineering the interfacial behavior of PMS activation.

The excessive use of antibiotics has accelerated the rise of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and rapid antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) is very important for the early detection, early prevention and treatment of AMR. On this basis, we combined manganese-doped zinc sulfide quantum dots (Mn-ZnS QDs) with aminated dendritic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (DMSNs-NH 2 ) to prepare Mn-ZnS QDs@DMSNs-NH 2 room-temperature phosphorescent (RTP) nanocomposites. H 2 O 2 can quench the RTP of Mn-ZnS QDs@DMSNs-NH 2 nanocomposites, while catalase-positive bacteria can cause the hydrolysis of H 2 O 2 . Hence, RTP detection of different antibiotic tolerance for Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) was achieved. This sensing system can achieve rapid bacterial detection and AST through the difference in RTP intensity. Experimental results demonstrated that the linear detection range for bacteria is 0×10 5 -64×10 5 CFU·mL -1 , with a limit of detection (LOD) of 1×10 5 CFU·mL -1 for MRSA and 0.7×10 5 CFU·mL -1 for S. aureus . The pore confinement effect of DMSNs-NH 2 can induce the aggregation of Mn-ZnS QDs, which strengthens the RTP of Mn-ZnS QDs@DMSNs-NH 2 nanocomposites and improves the sensitivity of RTP detection. This method is not only free from sample background fluorescence interference, but also shortens the AST time (less than 90 min), making antibacterial treatment more time-saving and efficient and reducing patient pains. This nanosensor provides a new strategy for rapid clinical bacterial detection and effective assessment of antimicrobial susceptibility.

Cancer immunotherapy has improved the survival rate of patients with malignant tumors. However, the response of solid tumors to immunotherapy is quite limited. Here, we report a pH-responsive nanocomposite for augmented sonodynamic-chemodynamic immunotherapy. This Mn-CaCO 3 -2,2′-azobis[2-(2-imidazolin-2-yl) propane]-dihydrochloride (AIPH) nanosystem, Lipo@MCA, was prepared through a simple two-step reaction. It released sonosensitizer AIPH and Ca 2+ within the acidic tumor microenvironment. AIPH generated alkyl free radicals under ultrasound irradiation, and Mn 2+ produces ·OH through Fenton-like reaction. The Ca 2+ induced calcium overload in tumor cells. This induced mitochondrial dysfunction and promoted tumor cell apoptosis. Lipo@MCA also inhibited the phosphorylation of Akt and PI3K. In vitro experiments indicated that the nanoparticle inhibited tumor cell invasion and migration, and induced tumor cell apoptosis. In vivo experiments demonstrated that Lipo@MCA inhibited tumor growth by promoting cytokine secretion, stimulating dendritic cell maturation, and enhancing T-cell differentiation. In summary, this study paves the way for synergistic inhibition of tumor cell metastasis and immunotherapy in solid tumors through PI3K signaling pathway inhibition.

Mesoporous MnO x -Y and LnO x /MnO x ozone decomposition catalysts were prepared by calcination of Mn-BTC (BTC = 1,3,5-benzentricarboxylate) and doping of lanthanide elements (Ln = La, Ce, Sm, Eu, Er). Compared to MnO x -Y catalysts, the LnO x /MnO x catalysts showed higher ozone catalytic activity, the mutual conversion between Ln n+ and Mn n+ was helpful to improve ozone decomposition. The CeO x /MnO x catalyst showed the highest catalytic that showed 93% conversion of 40 ppm O 3 in the relative humidity (RH) = 65% after 360 min, which was attributed to the largest specific surface area, more oxygen vacancies , Mn 3+ and O ads . In addition, the CeO x /MnO x catalyst was loaded into the non-woven fabric to obtain CeO x /MnO x -NWF catalyst, which showed a highly efficient and stable ozone conversion under the RH range from less than 5%–85%. This work will promote the practical application of Mn-BTC derived catalysts.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with abundant pores are excellent adsorbents for metal ions. However, the subsequent treatment of used MOFs and their reutilization still lack promising solutions. Herein, the surface-restructured Mn-doped Cu 2 O (RM-Cu 2 O) catalyst containing asymmetric Mn−Cu sites is prepared by glucose reduction using the spent Cu-based MOF (HKUST-1) as the precursor. The RM-Cu 2 O catalyst shows good potential in tunable photocatalytic syngas (CO and H 2 ) production in a pure water system. The syngas ratios can be tuned from ∼1:2 to ∼1:1 by increasing CO production. DFT calculations and photoelectrochemical tests confirm that the asymmetric Mn−Cu sites on the RM-Cu 2 O catalyst accelerate the photogenerated charge transport and optimize CO 2 adsorption and activation. In situ irradiation X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is conducted to investigate the dynamic charge transport and reactions on the RM-Cu 2 O catalyst. Based on in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and simulations, the mechanism of photocatalytic syngas production is elucidated. This work provides a promising solution for the resource utilization of the spent MOFs-based adsorbents and photocatalytic energy development.

In this research, we present an innovative, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective alcohothermal method for synthesizing Mn2+ and Mn2+–Cu+ doped 0D Cs3ZnCl5, a green luminescent material, marking the first time this approach has been reported. An exhaustive analysis of the luminescence properties of both undoped and doped Cs3ZnCl5 was conducted, with a particular emphasis on the energy transfer mechanisms in the Mn2+ mono-doped and Mn2+–Cu+ co-doped systems. The results demonstrate the successful construction of an efficient energy transfer pathway that significantly enhances the luminescence efficiency of Cs3ZnCl5:Mn2+. Specifically, the photoluminescence quantum yield of Mn2+ within the Cs3ZnCl5 matrix has been improved from 51.6% to 71.1%, thanks to the Cu+ codopant acting as an effective energy transfer mediator. A mechanism for the luminescence and energy transfer phenomena observed in the Mn2+–Cu+ co-doped Cs3ZnCl5 system has been also proposed. Furthermore, to assess the practical applicability of the synthesized materials, their structural and photoluminescent stability were evaluated. In essence, our study presents a promising solution to current challenges in the synthesis of advanced luminescent materials and opens up new possibilities for harnessing the potential of Mn2+-activated 0D metal halides in optoelectronic applications.

While photocatalytic technology has been recognized as an effective means for removing low-concentration NOx in ambient atmosphere, it still faces the challenge of the deep oxidation in high efficiency. In many cases, the release of more toxic NO 2 byproduct appeared to be inevitable during the photocatalytic oxidation of NO. Herein we report that the atomically dispersed MnO x cocatalyst on TiO 2 (B) microspheres could significantly enhance the deep oxidation of NOx under mild photocatalytic conditions (1 mW/cm 2 UV-A light, 1 L/min flow rate). At an initial NO concentration of 0.35 ppm, ca. 67.15% of NO is oxidized on the MT-0.5 sample, which is 2.76 times higher than the pristine TiO 2 (B) sample. More importantly, the release of NO 2 is suppressed by 2.11 times. Comprehensive spectral analyses suggest that atomically dispersed MnO x effectively promotes the charge separation of photogenerated carriers in TiO 2 (B), even better than MnO x nanoparticles-loaded TiO 2 (B). EPR and in-situ FTIR analyses illustrate that atomically dispersed MnO x -loaded TiO 2 (B) sample exhibits excellent low concentration NOx abatement performance, thus providing a rational mechanism for the NO deep oxidation pathway. This study not only provides a unique approach for preparing non-noble metal atomically dispersed co-catalysts, but also affords an effective means for efficient photocatalytic NO degradation.
