All-solid-state batteries suffer from drastic interfacial reactions between the solid electrolyte and electrode, which restricts the performance of the full cell. Herein, a hybrid solid polymer electrolyte with high ionic conductivity and stability has been fabricated by in-situ polymerization of poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) on glass fiber matrix, followed by polyethylene glycol (PEG) infiltration . Such hybrid electrolyte, namely GF@PEGDA@PEG (GFPP), is featured with an interconnecting ionic conducting network and demonstrates high ionic conductivities of 0.8 × 10 −4 S cm −1 at 20 °C and 4.5 × 10 −3 S cm −1 at 60 °C. The ex-situ Attenuated Total Reflectance-Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) of Na/GFPP/Na symmetrical battery proves the excellent stability of GFPP. Furthermore, in-situ Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) analysis and in-situ Raman spectra confirm the enhanced interfacial dynamics achieved by GFPP, being conducive to the intercalation/deintercalation of Na + . Meanwhile, the optical microscope and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) demonstrate the formation of a stable SEI film and limited interfacial side reaction by the incorporation of GFPP. Full sodium metal batteries based on GFPP have been assembled and demonstrated satisfactory electrochemical performance. After being tested for 1100 cycles at a rate of 0.3 C, the Coulombic efficiency of Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 (NVP) /GFPP/Na full cell remains at almost 99%, with a capacity retention of 91.4%.

Room-temperature Na-ion batteries have attracted great interest for over a decade owing to their natural abundance and similar intercalation chemistry with Li-ion. However, due to the uncontrolled decomposition of electrolyte and formation of solid electrolyte interphase, the large majority of sodium anode materials exhibit extremely low initial Coulombic efficiency and unsatisfactory cycling stability. Here we introduce a novel layered material, P2-Na 0.547 [M g 0.25 M n 0.75 ]O 2 , as an SEI-free negative electrode. This material, delivers a reversible capacity of 126 mAh g −1 with a high initial Coulombic efficiency of 108%, and capacity retention of ∼80% after 1000 cycles at 4C rate. Pairing with Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 cathode, excellent rate performance of ∼60% capability at 15C, and extra-high initial Coulombic efficiency of 97% are achieved, all attributed to the SEI-free feature of Na 0.547 [M g 0.25 M n 0.75 ]O 2 . These results demonstrate the practical potential of our SEI-free anode material for high-power and long-life Na-ion batteries.

Hyper cross-linked polymers (HCPs), as a key precursor of hard carbon (HC) anode materials, stand out because of their capacity for molecular-scale structural design and comparatively straightforward preparation techniques, which are not seen in other porous materials synthesized procedure. A novel synthesis method of HCPs is developed in this paper, which is through the incorporation of functional macromolecules , the structural control and heteroatom doping of the product has been achieved, thus augmenting its electrochemical performance in batteries. In this work, carbonized tetraphenylporphyrin zinc (TPP-Zn) doped HCP-based hard carbon (CTHCP) with stable structure was prepared by Friedel-Crafts reaction and carbonization by using naphthalene and trace TPP-Zn as monomers, dimethoxybenzene (DMB) as crosslinking agent and FeCl 3 as catalyst. The introduction of TPP-Zn, a functional macromolecule with unique two-dimensional structure, realized the pore structure regulation and N doping of the raw carbonized HCP-based hard carbon (CHCP). The results showed that CTHCP had higher mesoporous volume, N content and wider layer spacing than CHCP. In addition, CTHCP anode exhibited excellent Li + /Na + storage performance, initial reversible capacity, rate performance and long cycle life. More amount of N -containing (N-5) active sites and mesoporous content in CTHCP anode was the main reason for the improvement of Na + storage effect. While the increased interlayer spacing had a greater effect on the lithium storage capacity. This study uncovered the design rules of HC anode materials suitable for Li + /Na + batteries and provided a new idea for the preparation of high-performance HC anode materials.

Na 4 Fe 3 (PO 4 ) 2 (P 2 O 7 ) (NFPP) is a promising cathode material for sodium-ion batteries due to its low cost, high safety, and long cycle life. However, its poor electronic conductivity and air instability hinder practical application, and the issue of air stability has received limited attention. Herein, the hydrolysis behavior of NFPP/C in humid air is systematically investigated. Based on the identified degradation mechanism, a surface reconstruction strategy is proposed via in situ liquid-phase encapsulation of nanostructured Na 3 (VO) 2 PO 4 F (NVPOF). During heat treatment, VO x in NVPOF catalyzes carbon ordering and enables partial V doping into the NFPP surface lattice, thereby modulating surface chemistry, crystal and electronic structure of NFPP. Additionally, the aligned NVPOF/NFPP heterostructure with minimal lattice mismatch forms a built-in electric field, reducing Na⁺ diffusion barriers and interfacial stress. As a result, the Na3 site is activated, leading to significantly enhanced electrochemical performance. The optimized NFPP/NVPOF/C composite delivers excellent rate capability, with a discharge capacity of 126.55 mAh g −1 at 0.1C and 114.40 mAh g −1 at 10C. This work addresses the overlooked air stability issue of NFPP and highlights the importance of surface reconstruction coupled with interface engineering.

Aiming at inhibiting the irreversible P2–O2 phase transition of conventional P2-type cathode materials at high voltage and enhancing the cycling stability of sodium-ion batteries, in this article, based on a strategy of adjusting the Na + ion occupancy within the crystal structure, Na 0.67 Ni 0.33 Mn 0.67– x Fe x O 2 (NM– x Fe, x = 0.10, 0.15, 0.20) cathode materials were synthesized by high shear mixer (HSM)-assisted co-precipitation method and evaluated the electrochemical performance at high voltage (4.35 V). The optimal sample NM–0.15Fe exhibits an initial discharge capacity of 130.8 mAh/g (0.1 C), with exceptional retention of 95.9% after 100 cycles (1 C). XRD analysis reveals that Fe intercalation promotes the more amount of Nae-similar occupation; the Nae/Naf ratio equals 1.93 for NM–0.15Fe versus 1.62 for NM, which enhances Na + diffusion kinetics, as confirmed by GITT tests. Through characterizations of in situ XRD, XPS, HRTEM, CV, etc., it is illustrated that the Fe 3+ intercalation can effectively disrupt the Na + /vacancy ordering and inhibit the harmful P2–O2 phase transition, and then improve the cycling stability of the cathode. DFT calculations disclose that intercalated Fe can reduce the electron densities of adjacent transition metallic elements, generating more repulsive forces impacted on sodium and consequently appearance of more Nae sites, leading to a lower Na + diffusion energy barrier. Such strategy of modulating Na occupation sites in crystal structure is conducive to the development of low-cost and high-performance layered cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries.

Na-β"-Al 2 O 3 matrix materials, featuring a stable layered structure and Na + ions double sites, are promising as host materials for luminescent applications. In this work, a series of broadband Na-β"-Al 2 O 3 : x Eu 2+ , 0.08Ce 3+ cyan phosphors were designed and synthesized. Based on the ability of Eu 2+ to occupy two Na + sites in the Na-β"-Al 2 O 3 matrix, the photoluminescence (PL) spectra displayed dual-peak emissions centered at 470 and 500 nm, with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 140 nm. The Na-β"-Al 2 O 3 : Eu 2+ , Ce 3+ phosphors have excellent thermal stability (95.1 %@448 K). Finally, the fabricated white-light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) with CIE 1931 chromaticity coordinates of (0.32, 0.35) and a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 6015 K, indicating their potential for application in full-spectrum WLEDs.

Sodium-ion batteries are renowned for their abundant reserves, cost-efficiency, safety, and eco-friendliness and are prime candidates for large-scale energy storage applications. The development of cathode materials plays a crucial role in shaping both the commercialization path and the ultimate performance capabilities of SIBs. To overcome the intricate synthesis challenges associated with pure-phase sodium-ion cathode materials, this study introduces an innovative and streamlined electrochemical Li+/Na+exchange process, successfully fabricating a high-capacity Ni-rich cathode material. This cathode material boasts a remarkable reversible capacity of 180 mAh g−1at 0.1 C and retains a high-rate capacity of 115 mAh g−1even at 5 C. Additionally, it exhibits exceptional cycling stability, retaining about 85% of its capacity at 1 C after 50 cycles and still maintaining a capacity greater than 60% after 100 cycles. The Na-NMA85 full cell preserves a discharge capacity of 110 mAh g−1after 100 cycles, with a capacity retention rate of 80%. This research underscores innovative strategies for designing ion-intercalation-based cathode materials that enhance battery performance, providing fresh perspectives for advancing high-performance battery technologies.

The effect of nominal Na/Bi ratio on the microstructure and electrical conductivity of A-site fully stoichiometric sodium bismuth titanates , Na 0.5+ x Bi 0.5− x TiO 3− δ , was investigated in this study. Bulk samples with x = 0, 0.01, 0.03, 0.05, 0.07, and 0.1 were prepared by conventional solid state reaction method. The as-calcined powders primarily exhibited the perovskite structure, which was identified by X-ray diffraction. Electron microscopic investigation of the sintered samples, however, revealed the presence of secondary phases, the amounts of which were found to increase with increasing Na/Bi ratio. Further elemental analysis by energy dispersive spectroscopy indicated that the secondary phases were mainly composed of sodium titanates with different Na/Ti ratios. The grain bulk and grain boundary conductivities of Na 0.5+ x Bi 0.5− x TiO 3− δ , measured by two-probe AC electrochemical impedance spectroscopy , significantly increased with increasing Na/Bi ratio when x ≤ 0.03, but remained almost constant at higher x . The synergetic effect of oxygen vacancy creation, grain size reduction, and secondary phase formation on the variation in the conductivity upon increasing the nominal Na/Bi ratio in Na 0.5+ x Bi 0.5− x TiO 3− δ was discussed.

High-capacity anode materials are highly desirable for sodium ion batteries. Here, a porous Sb/Sb 2 O 3 nanocomposite is successfully synthesized by the mild oxidization of Sb nanocrystals in air. In the composite, Sb contributes good conductivity and Sb 2 O 3 improves cycling stability, particularly within the voltage window of 0.02–1.5 V. It remains at a reversible capacity of 540 mAh·g –1 after 180 cycles at 0.66 A·g –1 . Even at 10 A·g –1 , the reversible capacity is still preserved at 412 mAh·g –1 , equivalent to 71.6% of that at 0.066 A·g –1 . These results are much better than Sb nanocrystals with a similar size and structure. Expanding the voltage window to 0.02–2.5 V includes the conversion reaction between Sb 2 O 3 and Sb into the discharge/charge profiles. This would induce a large volume change and high structure strain/stress, deteriorating the cycling stability. The identification of a proper voltage window for Sb/Sb 2 O 3 paves the way for its development in sodium ion batteries.

Well-distributed graphene sheets doped with nitrogen (NGSs) were prepared via a thermal annealing strategy with the use of cyanamide. The cyanamide can efficiently restrain the conglomeration of the resultant graphene sheets and simultaneously ensure the doping of nitrogen. Followed by the next-step of the low-temperature solvothermal route, uniform ultrasmall tin sulfide (SnS2) nanocrystals were readily grown on the preformed NGS (denoted as SnS2–NGS). Benefiting from the synergistic function between NGSs and SnS2, the resultant composites exhibit excellent electrochemical performance. When evaluated as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), SnS2–NGS with a moderate weight ratio of SnS2 delivers outstanding electrochemical performance giving a high reversible capacity of 1407 mA h g−1 at 200 mA g−1 after 120 cycles. The composites can also maintain a reversible capacity of about 200 mA h g−1 at a high current density of 10 A g−1. The lithium-ion storage ability of the prepared SnS2–NGS electrode is at the top rank in comparison with those of other studies. The obtained composites also achieved good sodium storage ability.

The preferentially selective extraction of Li+ from spent layered transition metal oxide (LiMO2, M = Ni, Co, Mn, etc.) cathodes has attracted extensive interest based on economic and recycling efficiency requirements. Presently, the efficient recycling of spent LiMO2 is still challenging due to the element loss in multistep processes. Here, we developed a facile strategy to selectively extract Li+ from LiMO2 scraps with stoichiometric H2SO4. The proton exchange reaction could be driven using temperature, accompanied by the generation of soluble Li2SO4 and MOOH precipitates. The extraction mechanism includes a two-stage evolution, including dissolution and ion exchange. As a result, the extraction rate of Li+ is over 98.5% and that of M ions is less than 0.1% for S-NCM. For S-LCO, the selective extraction result is even better. Finally, Li2CO3 products with a purity of 99.68% can be prepared from the Li+-rich leachate, demonstrating lithium recovery efficiencies as high as 95 and 96.3% from NCM scraps and S-LCO scraps, respectively. In the available cases, this work also represents the highest recycling efficiency of lithium, which can be attributed to the high leaching rate and selectivity of Li+, and even demonstrates the lowest reagent cost. The regenerated LiNi0.5Co0.24Mn0.26O2 and Na1.01Li0.001Ni0.38Co0.18Mn0.44O2 cathodes also deliver a decent electrochemical performance for Li-ion batteries (LIBs) and Na-ion batteries (NIBs), respectively. Our current work offers a facile, closed-loop, and scalable strategy for recycling spent LIB cathodes based on the preferentially selective extraction of Li+, which is superior to the other leaching technology in terms of its cost and recycling yield.
