Synthesis and characterization of block and random POSS/fluorinated PAES tricopolymers

Qiyang Jiang,Jinmeng Hao,Yanfeng Wei,Jianxin Mu

Block and random polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS)/fluorinated poly aryl ether sulfone tricopolymers were synthesized using different synthetic strategies to investigate the effect of sequence distribution on their thermal, dielectric, and surface properties. Analyses indicated that all block and random copolymers showed similar growth tendency of water contact angles and T g values, downward tendency of k values with increased content of POSS. The block copolymer displayed higher T g values up to 187°C than random copolymers (173°C) under the same POSS molar percentage, which were highly related to their different sequence distribution. The dielectric constants of the tricopolymers were drastically reduced because of the presence of POSS and fluorine, and the dielectric constant could achieve as low as 2.71 (1 MHz). Besides, sequence distribution has no obvious influence on its surface properties and properties. Meanwhile, the yields of degradation residues of the tricopolymers were significantly improved by the ceramic formation from POSS moieties during thermal decomposition. Design and synthesis of low-dieclectric polyaryl ethers containing bulky tetraphenyl vinyl pendant group

Wenhua Hou,Lishuai Zong,Linyan Zhu,Jiaming Wang,Yabin Zhang,Zhansheng Li,Jinyan Wang,Xigao Jian

A tetraphenylethylene-containing bisphenol monomer 5-[4-(triphenylvinyl)phenyl]benzene-1,3-diol (TPE-OH) was designed and synthesized by Suzuki coupling and nucleophilic substitution reaction. By adjusting the proportion of TPE-OH, a series of rigid polyaryl ether, namely PPTES, were facilely synthesized by homopolymerization or copolymerization with 4-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2,3-diazepine-1-one (DHPZ) and 4,4′-difluorodiphenyl sulfone (DFS). The following characterization of their structures with nuclear magnetic resonance and infrared spectroscopy confirmed successful synthesis of both monomers and polymers. Large, volume-twisted and non-coplanar rigid tetraphenylethylene could effectively increase the molecular chain spacing and reduce the regularity of the molecular chain, as evidenced by molecular dynamics simulation with Materials Studio, in turn to form an amorphous nature of PPTES phase state. In addition, such PPTESs have excellent solubility, heat resistance, and other comprehensive properties. Their glass transition temperature ( T g ) is between 219 and 300°C, and the 5% thermogravimetric temperature of PPTESs locates at 490–539°C under N 2 atmosphere. At 1 GHz, the intrinsic dielectric permittivity of polymer films is between 2.32 and 2.61, gradually decreases with TPE-OH content. This work would provide new idea and choice for the selection of polyaryl ether resin bisphenol monomer, and promote the development and application of low-dielectric polyarylether materials.

Effects of dopamine-modified ZnO and Ce-Zr oxides on UV resistance and thermal stability of epoxy composites

Yi Li,Ning Zhang,Yanchao Zhu,Min Cheng,Shuang Gao

In this work, surface-modified Ce-Zr oxides and ZnO nanoparticles were conveniently prepared by dopamine (Dpa) treatment and then composited with epoxy (EP) by hot pressing. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and UV-shielding properties of the EP composites with surface modification with Dpa-CZ and Dpa-ZnO were measured. The TGA results showed that the modified treated fillers had no loss of heat resistance of the matrix and had an enhancement effect on the initial and maximum decomposition temperatures. In addition, the UV-shielding properties of EP composites after Dpa-CZ and Dpa-ZnO modifications both showed a significant enhancement effect compared to pure EP. The T(UVA) of the 0.5 wt% Dpa-ZnO modified composite decreased to less than 0.017%, and the T(UVB) decreased to less than 0.0059%. The T(UVA) of the 0.5 wt% Dpa-CZ modified composite decreased to less than 15.98%, and the T(UVB) decreased to below 1.14%. The composites have both excellent thermal stability and UV-shielding efficiency.

Enhanced mechanical properties of polyphenylene sulfide and liquid crystal polymer composites by interfacial bonding capacity of graft-modified graphene oxide and glass fibers

Ke Xu,Shengxin Guan,Jianguang Xu,Lin Xia,Zhaoge Huang

The aim of this study is to broaden the potential applications of polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) by incorporating graphene oxide (GO)-grafted glass fiber (GF) to enhance the mechanical properties of liquid crystal polymer (LCP)/PPS composites. The surface of GF was modified using γ-Aminopropyltriethoxysilane (KH550), allowing for the grafting of GO. Subsequently, GO-GF/LCP/PPS composites were prepared through extrusion injection molding. The properties of the composites were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis. The findings indicate that the interfacial adhesion between GF and composites is significantly improved with the addition of GO, The mass fractions of GO used were 0.1%, 0.5%, and 0.7%. The incorporation of GO-grafted GF proves to be an effective approach in enhancing the tensile and flexural strengths of LCP/PPS composites. Additionally, a reduction in wear volume and tribological coefficient is observed compared to composites without GO-treated GF. Notably, when the GO content is 0.5 wt%, the mechanical properties of the composites show significant improvement, with a 50% increase in impact strength compared to the composite without GO, and a decrease in friction coefficient from 0.28 to 0.22.

Enhanced Dielectric Properties of Polyetherimide-Based Nanocomposite Films With Doped Semiconductor Traps

Jingyu Lin,Lingzhi Nie,Wei Yin,Pengtu Zhang,Peiyuan Zuo,Puke Mi,Qixin Zhuang

The emerging electronic devices demand dielectric polymer films with high energy storage density over a wide temperature range. However, the mobility of charge carriers leads to unsatisfactory dielectric performance even for heat-resistant dielectric polymers such as polyetherimide (PEI). Therefore, to enhance the energy storage density of polymer dielectrics, it is critical to concurrently focus on increasing the dielectric constant and improving the breakdown strength by hindering the migration of electrons, which is highly correlated with the intrinsic bandgap structures of dielectrics. Inspired by the tunable bandgap structure of doped semiconductors, this work is aimed at strengthening the trapping of charge carriers depending on the construction of electron traps and the formation of electron–hole pairs, that is, to tailor the bandgap of ZnS 1−x O x via oxygen doping and the band structure at the ZnS 1−x O x /PEI interface region, thereby significantly enhancing the breakdown strength of the composite films. At room temperature and 450 kV mm −1 , the energy density ( U d ) of 0.4 vol% ZnS 0.7 O 0.3 /PEI reaches 5.7 J cm −3 with a charge–discharge efficiency ( η ) of 96.6%, which is 2.3 times that of pure PEI (2.5 J cm −3 , η = 86.2%). Moreover, the composite film exhibits excellent dielectric stability at high temperatures. At 150°C and 350 kV mm −1 , the U d remains 3.4 J cm −3 , with a high η of 89.1%, significantly higher than that of pure PEI (1.5 J cm −3 , η = 80.6%). This work provides a novel perspective for the design of high-performance dielectric composite films via interfacial engineering.

Preparation of macroporous hydrophobic materials filled with aligned porous hydrophilic domain via emulsion-templated and unidirectional freezing technique

Yun Zhu,Zhen Lu,Jianding Chen,Shengmiao Zhang

A new class of porous materials, having hydrophobic scaffold embedded with aligned porous hydrophilic domains, was in situ fabricated through combination of emulsion-templated method and unidirectional freezing technique. A water-in-oil high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) was prepared with the mixture of styrene and divinylbenzene as continuous phase and a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) aqueous solution as dispersed phase. After polymerization of the continuous phase and subsequently unidirectional freezing, the dispersed phase, a macroporous poly(styrene/divinylbenzene) embedded with an aligned PVA domain, was obtained. The effects of the polymerization temperature, PVA concentration, and freezing rate on these porous materials were investigated. It was found that the PVA domain size and the aligned channel size were dependent on the polymerization temperature, the PVA concentration, and freezing rate. The fabrication method in this work, combining of unidirectional freezing and emulsion template, not only allows to prepare hydrophobic–hydrophilic polyHIPEs having a sea island structure but also dramatically improves the stiffness and specific surface area of the resulting polyHIPEs. Improvement of thermal stability, crystallinity and degradation of poly(butylene carbonate) by incorporation of bio-based poly(ethylene sebacate) segment

Xiaodong Cai,Xiangui Yang,Jianguo Li,Gongying Wang

Multiblock poly(carbonate-co-esters) (PBC-PESe) containing poly(butylene carbonates) (PBC) and bio-based poly(ethylene sebacate) (PESe) had been synthesized successfully by chain-extension of dihydroxyl terminated PBC (PBC-OH) and PESe (PESe-OH) using 1,6-hexmethylene diisocyanate as chain extender. The chemical structures, molecular weights, crystallization behaviors, and thermal and degradation properties of the copolymers were all characterized by proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscope, thermogravimetry analysis, water contact angle, and hydrolytic degradation. The resulting copolymers PBC-PESe all had a sole glass transition temperature (Tg), indicating the two segments, PBC and PESe, were well compatible in the amorphous phase. PESe segment acted a significant role on enhancing the thermal degradation temperature and hydrolytic degradation rate of multiblock copolymers. And the crystallization rate of PBC got dramatically accelerated after PESe segment was incorporated. However, the crystallization mechanism did not change. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of multiblock copolymers could be adjusted by changing the feed composition. Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Enhancing Thermal and Mechanical Properties of Soft PVC Composites With Phosphorylated Boron Nitride

Yawen Li,Guoyang Ma,Shaohong Xu,Zaheer Ahmad,Muhammad Ali,Saad Ahmed,Naveed Ahmed

In the present study, hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanosheets were first functionalized with hydroxyl groups (h-BN-OH), and then phosphonic acid groups were grafted onto the h-BN surface (BNP) using aminotris(methylenephosphonic acid) (ATMP) through a condensation reaction. The BNP was then incorporated into a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) matrix to prepare PVC/BNP composites. Thermogravimetric analysis showed an increase in thermal stability, with BNP/PVC composites exhibiting greater resistance to degradation at elevated temperatures. The addition of BNP improved the dispersion and interfacial adhesion within the PVC matrix, as confirmed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Furthermore, the PVC/BNP composites exhibited a 22.5% increase in tensile strength (21.2 MPa) and an 82% improvement in elongation at break (464%) compared to pristine PVC composites, which showed a tensile strength of 17.3 MPa and an elongation at break of 255%. Moreover, the addition of BNP notably improved the thermal conductivity from 0.18 to 1.50 W/m K as the BNP content increased from BNP-0 to BNP-4. These improvements in thermal stability and mechanical strength, as well as excellent migration resistance, make BNP/PVC composites highly promising for advanced applications.

Di Wu,Ling Weng,Xiaorui Zhang,Lizhu Guan,Zijian Wu

The development of flexible piezoresistive sensors has increasingly attracted widespread attention due to their various potential applications in wearable devices, human–machine interfaces, and health monitoring systems. Developing high-performance sensors that can accurately monitor movement and human health monitoring is very necessary. This study uses silver nanoparticles, MXene, and polypyrrole to prepare conductive fabrics based on various fabrics through layer-by-layer encapsulation. Finally, conductive fabrics with different layers were encapsulated to prepare a multilayer fiber sensor. Next, the series piezoresistive performance of sensors made of different fabric materials and sensors with different layers were tested. The experimental results show that the sensor prepared has the best performance when the selected fabric material is mulberry silk and the number of layers of the fabric is five. After testing, the sensitivity of the sensor is 4.9029 at low strain and 0.7901 at high strain. Moreover, it exhibits good stability during 1600 compression-release cycles and temperatures range from −20 to 60°C. The designed sensor performs well in motion and human physiological signal monitoring. This study provides new ideas and references for the design and research of multilayer fiber sensors.

Formula Design of Hyperbranched Polyarylether-Based Low Dielectric Photosensitive Resin and Study of UV-Cured Films Properties

Lingmei Jiang,Chenghao Wang,Changhong Xiao,Guangsheng Zhang,Yibo Wang,Haoran Liu,Kuanyu Yuan,Lishuai Zong,Jinyan Wang,Xigao Jian

For large-area electronic and high shape complexity structure applications, various solution-processable materials are chosen as dielectric layer due to their simple molding process via spin-coating, casting, or 3D printing at room temperature. Herein, the acrylic-ended fluorinated hyperbranched polyaryletherketone ( hb -P6FAEK-Ace) was used as the prepolymer and then, the composition of photosensitive resin formula was regulated by adjusting the addition ratio of hb -P6FAEK-Ace and diluents (acrylimorpholine [ACMO] 1,6-Hexanediol diacrylate [HDDA]). These photosensitive resin solutions showed the relative low viscosities ranged ranging from 18 to 253 mPa S at 100°C which was in favor of the future 3D printing method and printing accuracy. Then, the obtained UV-cured films show the maximum tensile strength up to 71.9 MPa and superior thermal properties with the T g of 157°C–177°C and T 5% of 314°C–351°C. Moreover, they also exhibited the good dielectric performance with dielectric constants of 2.43–2.20 and dielectric loss of 0.013–0.014 at 1 MHz–1 GHz. These abovementioned satisfactory performance could be ascribed to the aromatic skeleton of hb -P6FAEK-Ace, introduced polarizability-CF 3 groups and the inner cavities for the hyperbranched structures, also the precise control of formula composition. Additionally, the curing degree, shrinkage of solid, and moisture properties were also researched thoroughly. This work provides a simple formula design though to construct the high performance and low dielectric photosensitive resin for the requirements of microelectronic applications.

Graft-crosslinked graphene oxide nanofiltration membrane with pH-responsive nanochannels

Yangyang Wang,Hongding Yan,Mengxu Ma,Chenkai Zhou,Qian Hou,Zehong Xu,Min Xia,Huagang Ni,Yanrong Jia,Peng Ye

Electrostatic effect and Donnan effect could effectively improve the separation performance of nanofiltration membrane. Polyions were grafted from graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets to prepare the nanofiltration membrane, and the electrostatic effect and Donnan effect in the membrane pores could be greatly improved. The GO was modified by introducing double bonds. Then, polyanionic poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and polycationic diallyldimethylammonium chloride (PDDA) were grafted from GO nanosheets, which were employed to fabricate the nanofiltration membranes, respectively. Therefore, nanofiltration membranes GO-PAA and GO-PDDA with cross-linked structure and pH responsiveness were prepared. The separation effect of the anionic dyes was over 99%, and the membrane had perfect adsorption effect on cationic dyes. The cross-linked structure formed between GO nanosheets inhibited the change of the interlayer spacing of the nanofiltration membrane. The conformation of the graft chains could be adjusted by the pH value of the solution, by adjusting the size of the nanochannel. The rejection rates of the nanofiltration membranes for the cationic dyes could reach more than 98%, and the membrane had perfect adsorption effect on anionic dyes. Similar to the grafted polyanion, the grafted polycation also formed a cross-linked structure between the graphene nanosheets, thereby inhibiting the change of the nanochannels with the pH value to a certain extent. Polyionic nanofiltration membranes have excellent selectivity and could be widely used in the treatment of dye wastewater and other fields.

Green Preparation of Ammonium Polyphosphate With Shell–Core Structure for Enhancing Fire Safety of Thermoplastic Polyurethane

Jiahao Duan,Congling Shi,Ling Yang,Xiaodong Qian,Mei Wan,Hongqing Zhu,Houwang Wang

In the recent years, the development of high-performance flame retardants (FRs) for thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) has become increasingly important due to its wide applications in various industries and the growing demand for fire safety. In this study, ammonium polyphosphate (APP) was used as the core, whereas chitosan (CS) and nano-silica (SiO 2 ) served as the shell to create a shell–core-structured FR through a self-assembly process in an aqueous phase. APP, APP@CS, and APP@CS@SiO 2 were incorporated into TPU at a concentration of 20 wt%, and their effects on TPU properties were compared. The findings showed that APP@CS@SiO 2 exhibited superior flame retardancy for TPU. Compared to pure TPU, the TPU/APP@CS@SiO 2 showed reductions in peak heat release rate, total heat release, peak smoke production rate, total smoke production, peak CO production rate, and peak CO 2 production rate by 58%, 80%, 80.5%, 89.1%, 20.4%, and 60.1%, respectively. Additionally, APP@CS@SiO 2 effectively inhibited the thermal degradation of TPU and enhanced its thermal stability, resulting in the residual carbon content of the composite rising to 28.5%, which is about 20 times higher than that of pure TPU. In conclusion, APP@CS@SiO 2 significantly improved the fire safety of TPU by efficiently catalyzing char formation in the condensed phase, diluting flammable gases, and hindering gas-phase free radical chain reactions, thereby opening new avenues for the practical application of TPU composites.
