Highly selective and robust PDMS mixed matrix membranes by embedding two-dimensional ZIF-L for alcohol permselective pervaporation

Heng Mao,Hong-Gang Zhen,Ali Ahmad,Shen-Hui Li,Yue Liang,Jun-Fan Ding,Yao Wu,Lin-Zhi Li,Zhi-Ping Zhao

High separation performance and superior mechanical properties of the membranes are both of critical importance for membrane modules to achieve high efficiency and long-term stability. Herein, a series of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) with brick-and-mortar architecture are prepared by incorporating two-dimensional zeolitic imidazolate framework-L (ZIF-L) nanosheets into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix for separating alcohols (ethanol, n -propanol or n -butanol) from aqueous solution. The unique leaf-like morphology, flexible pore structure , and high hydrophobicity of ZIF-L nanosheets allow the straight and preferential permeation for alcohols; while the brick-and-mortar architecture renders the tortuous and intricate pathways for water, thus improving the membrane selectivity. Incorporating ZIF-L nanosheets endows the membranes with outstanding pervaporation performance, together with unusual and favorable increase in mechanical properties. More interestingly, the subtle interconnection of ZIF-L nanosheets creates the relatively continuous pathways for penetrants. Consequently, the resultant membrane displays a high separation factor (57.6) and a comparable permeation flux (402 g m −2  h −1 ) in separating 1.0 wt% n -butanol aqueous solution at 40 °C. Furthermore, the presence of ZIF-L nanosheets donates good thermal properties and promising long-term stability to the membranes. The findings of engineering brick-and-mortar architecture through two-dimensional porous fillers may provide new insights into designing high-performance MOF-based membranes for various applications.

Study on CO2 Desorption Behavior of a PDMS–SiO2 Hybrid Membrane Applied in a Novel CO2 Capture Process

Ebrahim Ataeivarjovi,Zhigang Tang,Jian Chen

In this present work, a novel approach has been proposed by which a solvent absorption and membrane desorption methods can significantly reduce the carbon dioxide (CO2) emission and energy consumption. In this method, the CO2 capture processing is based on the combination of membrane and physical solvent. Here, dimethyl carbonate and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)–SiO2 nanocomposite were used as the physical solvent and desorption membrane, respectively. However, the main focus of this research was on the CO2 desorption behavior of PDMS–SiO2 hybrid membrane. To do so, the influence of the operating conditions and membrane properties on the pervaporation process to capture CO2 have been investigated. The PDMS–SiO2 hybrid membrane containing 10 wt % SiO2 was the most effective membrane. Results revealed that increase in CO2 concentration from 1.5 to 3 wt % led to decrease in the selectivity from 94 to 47 and increase in flux from 1.7 to 5.38 (kg/m2·h). In addition, an increase in temperature increased the flux and reached the highest level (8.17 kg/m2·h) at 40 °C. However, the selectivity decreased to 36.13. It was found that the addition of SiO2 nanoparticles to the PDMS membrane not only enhanced the membrane performance but also decreased the energy consumption about 75% compared with gas stripping method and mass transfer about 49% compared with pure PDMS membrane. Finally, these results illustrated that such a novel technique used for pervaporation separation process is a green and promising alternative to separate CO2 from the physical solvent.

Enhanced mechanical and adhesive properties of PDMS coatings via in-situ formation of uniformly dispersed epoxy reinforcing phase

Yuan Wang,Liwei Yan,Youquan Ling,Ying Ge,Congshu Huang,Shengtai Zhou,Shuang Xia,Mei Liang,Huawei Zou

A uniformly dispersed epoxy/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) hybrid system was prepared through hydrosilylation and in-situ polymerization reaction. The obtained epoxy/PDMS coating possessed enhanced mechanical and adhesive properties. The hybrid structure of epoxy/PDMS was confirmed by FTIR, 1 H NMR, GPC and SEM, respectively. Results indicated that the tensile strength , elongation at break and shear strength of the epoxy-containing polydimethylsiloxane (EPS) modified PDMS (EPS-PDMS) were increased by 187 %, 185 % and 137 %, respectively, when compared to the pure PDMS. Besides, TGA analysis indicated that the initial degradation temperature of EPS-PDMS was well maintained when compared to that of pure PDMS. Therefore, the convenient strategy of in-situ formation of epoxy reinforcing phase with flexible long-chain siloxane into PDMS effectively integrated the advantages of two incompatible polymers. The prepared EPS-PDMS coatings with enhanced mechanical and adhesive properties show great potential applications in the aerospace and industrial fields as flexible thermal protection coatings.

Functionalized MOF-Derived Nanoporous Carbon as Compatible Nanofiller to Fabricate Defect-Free PDMS-Based Mixed Matrix Pervaporation Membranes

Xu Zhang,Zhaowei Tong,Chao Liu,Lei Ye,Yuwei Zhou,Qin Meng,Guoliang Zhang,Congjie Gao

Metal–organic framework (MOF)-based polydimethylsiloxane mixed matrix membranes applied for alcohol recovery with high permeability and selectivity are drawing more and more attention. However, the design and fabrication of high-quality and stable MOF-based mixed matrix membrane for pervaporation are still a big challenge. Herein, PDMS functionalized MOF-derived nanoporous carbon (P-ZNC) was first explored as compatible nanofiller to mutually blend with polydimethylsiloxane on PVDF substrate to fabricate defect-free mixed matrix membranes via dip-coating and thermal cross-linkng. Induced by UV illumination, hydrophobic modification of MOF-derived nanoporous carbon was successfully realized under mild conditions within one step, simplifying the operation step. By using this facile strategy, we can not only solve the existing problem of agglomeration, but also covalently cross-link MOF derivative with polymeric matrix and effectively eliminate the interface defect between polymer and nanoparticles without any extra steps. The method also gives a good level of generality for the synthesis of versatile stable nanoporous MOF-derived carbon-based mixed matrix membranes on various supports. The prepared PDMS/P-ZNC with commendable structures possessed excellent separation performance in low concentration n-butanol recovery and had a good balance between permeance, selectivity, and stability.

Fabrication of highly sensitive and uniform Ag/PS/PDMS SERS substrate and its application for in-situ detection

Guangming Xu,Xilong Shen,Lei Zhang,Jie Tang,Chuan He,Ziqiang Zhou,Tian Xu,Meifeng Xu,Yonglong Jin,Chaonan Wang

In this study, we developed a flexible and transparent silver/polystyrene/polydimethylsiloxane (Ag/PS/PDMS) substrate with both high density of hot spots and satisfactory uniformity using a cost-effective approach. Via template-guided self-assembly, PS beads were arranged regularly in nanobowls of a square array on PDMS, whose surface structure was transferred from a commercial complementary metal oxide semiconductor chip. Roughness was introduced onto the PS bead surface by nitrogen plasma treatment, followed by sputtering of Ag which generated many hot spots. Differential roughness on the PS bead surface greatly influenced the morphology of the Ag/PS/PDMS substrate. A meat-ball like surface structure was formed with a plasma etching time of 5 min, whose growth mechanism was proposed based on the scanning electron microscope analysis. The high sensitivity and desirable uniformity of the meat-ball like Ag/PS/PDMS substrate were demonstrated by using crystal violet as a Raman reporter, exhibiting an enhancement factor of 2.7 × 107 and a relative standard deviation of 5.04%. Thiram of a lower concentration than the maximum residue limit on the cucumber surface could easily be detected in situ by the proposed substrate, demonstrating its great potential for in-situ food safety analysis.

Rational designed ZIF-8@PDA@PDMS composite sponge for efficient and sustainable particulate matter filtering under harsh environment

Yukui Gou,Yuanye Hao,Weilong Cai,Jianying Huang,Yuekun Lai

Particulate matter (PM) is a significant danger to both environment and human health. Despite the development of a series of air filters, they do not work well in harsh environment such as high temperature, high humidity or long-time filtration. To make a three-dimensional (3D) particle capture device, a sacrificial template approach was used to manufacture polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) sponge, and then zeolite imidazole framework-8 (ZIF-8) was grown in situ on the 3D network of PDMS sponge. The removal efficiency of PM 2.5 or PM 10 is greater than 99.8% because of the high specific surface area and porous network structure of PDMS sponge, as well as the large number of metal sites of ZIF-8. In addition, the sponge filter has long-term filtration stability and still achieves excellent performance after 65 h of filtration. The composite sponge can adapt to harsh environments such as high temperature (250 °C) and high humidity (90% RH). Composite sponge filter has a regular shape, and it may be customized to any shape as required. This study provides a new idea for designing 3D high-efficiency air filters that can adapt to harsh environments.

Dongxu Ma,Baiqi Chen,Yuanfang Li,Xueyuan Pang,Quanying Fu,Zihan Xiao,Zhonghong Shi,Xiaolei Li,Chongdai Luo,Zhang-kai Zhou,Yin Chen,Jianhua Zhou

The development of easy-to-use, low-cost, and visualized detection platforms for screening human dental caries and periodontal diseases is in urgent demand. In this work, a Au@Ag nanorods-poly(dimethylsiloxane) (Au@Ag NRs-PDMS) wearable mouthguard, which can visualize the tooth lesion sites through the color change of it at the corresponding locations, is presented. The Au@Ag NRs-PDMS composite exhibits a distinct color response to hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) gas generated by bacterial decay at the lesion sites. Moreover, the Au@Ag NRs-PDMS mouthguard is demonstrated to own desired mechanical properties, excellent chemical stability, as well as good biocompatibility, and can accurately locate the lesion sites in human oral cavity. These findings suggest that the mouthguard has the potential to be utilized on a large scale to help people self-monitor their oral health in daily life, and treat oral diseases locally.

Interference-free Detection of Caffeine in Complex Matrices Using a Nanochannel Electrode Modified with Binary Hydrophilic–Hydrophobic PDMS

Yintao Li,Zisheng Luo,Gangfeng Li,Tarun Belwal,Li Li,Yanqun Xu,Bin Su,Xingyu Lin

In the present study, a novel electrochemical sensor for the direct detection of caffeine in the crude sample has been prepared by plasma-triggered polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) deposition on the indium tin oxide electrodes supported with silica nanochannels. The deposited PDMS contains both the original hydrophobic and oxidized hydrophilic PDMS oligomers. Nanochannels modified with these two kinds of PDMS with opposite wettability only allow the passage of small amphiphilic molecules such as caffeine, while other molecules including hydrophilic, hydrophobic, and large ones were all rejected. With the excellent shielding properties, the modified nanochannel electrode exhibits excellent anti-interference and antifouling capability, which could be directly used for the detection of caffeine in real crude food such as tea, milk, coffee, and coke without sample pretreatments. Moreover, the modified electrode has good repeatability and stability. In contrast, severe interference was observed when conventional electrodes were used directly in these unprocessed samples. The linear ranges of caffeine were determined to be between 50 nmol/L and 700 μmol/L, with a limit of detection of 20 nmol/L. The developed sensor provides a very simple, rapid, and cost-effective way for the interference-free and fouling-free analysis of specific amphiphilic compounds and can be extended to a wide range of applications.

A superhydrophobic fluorinated PDMS composite as a wearable strain sensor with excellent mechanical robustness and liquid impalement resistance

Peng Wang,Weidong Wei,Ziqiang Li,Wei Duan,Huilong Han,Qing Xie

To endow strain sensors with superhydrophobicity may be a promising approach to improve the infrastructure safety in harsh environments. Artificial superhydrophobic strain sensors have exhibited good mechanical robustness and chemical resistance separately. However, a simultaneous demonstration of these characteristics along with superior liquid impalement resistance is still a big challenge. Here, we developed a strain sensor by combining fluorinated PDMS with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The key innovation in this research is achieving a multi-fluorination strategy on the PDMS matrix, which enhances the liquid impalement resistance without sacrificing mechanical robustness. Therefore, our strain sensors not only demonstrated superior sensitivity and excellent reproducibility, but also maintained superhydrophobicity after various kinds of destruction (such as toleration of strain up to 200%, man-made destruction using hands or sandpaper, chemical attack, 200 °C thermal attack and high-speed drop/turbulent jet impacts).

Spray-Coated Commercial PTFE Membrane from MoS2/LaF3/PDMS Ink as Solar Absorber for Efficient Solar Steam Generation

Hanjin Jiang,Hairui Fang,Dong Wang,Jianbo Sun

Due to its promising potential applications in seawater desalination and purification, solar steam conversion has attracted tremendous attention recently. The light-to-heat conversion capacity of solar absorbers directly affects the rate at which freshwater is produced by the evaporation system. Herein, an efficient double-layer evaporator is developed using MoS 2 /LaF 3 /PDMS ink as an absorber that is printed onto a commercial PTFE membrane by the controlled ink-spray method. The LaF 3 nanoparticles-decorated MoS 2 nanoflowers nanocomposite exhibits enhanced adsorption of sunlight due to semiconductor/solid electrolyte interface synergetic effect-induced broadband absorption ability. Combining the advantages of local heating and rapid vapor emission, the water evaporation rate of the evaporator with spray ink in sunlight is 1.76 kg m −2 h −1 and the corresponding high light-to-heat conversion efficiency is 91%. Also, the membrane module has good operability, certain mechanical strength, and good long-term stability. The synergistic effect of a rare-earth solid electrolyte and semiconductor provides new ideas for the design and development of materials with high light-to-heat conversion efficiency and good thermal stability.

Conductive Cross-Linkable PDMS-MXene Nanosheet Networks on Polyurethane Sponges as Robust Superhydrophobic Sensors for Human Motion Detection

Xiaojing Su,Weihua Yang,Zhenhao Zhang,Lexi Deng,Kunquan Li,Huali Xie,Yunhui Wu,Xiaofan Zhang,Wenjian Wu

Wearable piezoresistive sensors have aroused considerable attention for their huge potential in emerging applications such as healthcare monitoring and intelligent electronics. However, the fabrication of piezoresistive sensors that combine excellent sensing performance with outstanding working reliability in watery environments still remains challenging. Herein, a superhydrophobic polyurethane (PU) sponge was proposed as a piezoresistive sensor through the synthesis of d-asparagine-modified MXene nanosheets (MXene-NH2) and coating of a conductive cross-linkable layer constructed by dihydroxyl-terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS(OH)) and MXene-NH2 nanosheets. The microscale sponge skeleton and nanoscale PDMS-MXene nanosheet wrinkles formed a hierarchically rough structure in support of superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 160°. Benefiting from the chemically cross-linkable network and strong adhesion of PDMS-MXene nanosheet coating, the obtained PDMS-MXene@PU sponge exhibited a robust water repellency with water contact angles (WCAs) larger than 150° after enduring chemical and physical damages. Owing to the synergistic effect of the production of microcrack junctions in the PDMS-MXene nanosheet layer and contact separation between conductive backbones, the PDMS-MXene@PU sensor was successfully applied in monitoring full-scale human motions (e.g., blowing, facial expression, finger and knee bending, etc.) with excellent sensing performances of the gauge factor reaching −1.9. The findings conceivably stand out as a methodology to fabricate robust superhydrophobic piezoresistive sensors with desirable sensing property for innovative and broad applications even under special working conditions.

A High-Sensitive PDMS-Based sensor with a Wide Sensing Range by fabricating refined and reconstructable conductive network

Shuaishuai Zhou,Huanhuan Zhang,Qian Chen,Qing-wen Yuan,Sen-hao Zhang,Nannan Bao,Jin-Ping Qu

Flexible and stretchable sensors are increasingly being developed to conformally attach to skin or organs for monitoring human activity. However, due to agglomerations of nanofiller, the preparation of a strain sensor for conductive elastic polymer with high sensitivity and wide detection range remains a major challenge. Herein, a conductive network is refined in PDMS/MWCNTs composites using an   elongational flow field. This well-formed 3D MWCNTs network endows the nanocomposite with a high sensitivity and wide detection range for strain deformation. Moreover, it exhibits excellent recovery and reconstruction capabilities during strain deformation, ensuring exceptional cyclic stability for the sensing material. In particular, the fabricated composite (4 wt% MWCNTs) with good tensile strength (8.1 MPa), exhibits high sensitivity (1151), a wide detection range exceeding 200 % strain, and good stable performance over 2000 stretch-release cycles under 30 % strain. Consequently, the strain sensor made from PDMS/MWCNTs composites can detect subtle actions and larger joint movements, exhibiting a good discriminative ability. In addition, the sensor is successfully applied to detect and recognize human lifting movements based on a big data model, highlighting the potential application in smart wearable devices. This work presents a new strategy for obtaining a highly sensitive PDMS-based sensor with a wide sensing range for human motion detection by fabricating an optimized conductive network.
