Simple wet chemical method was used to prepare Cu(OH) 2 nanowire-coated copper mesh (denoted as Cu(OH) 2 -CM). Following modification with phytic acid (PA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI), superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic copper mesh (denoted as Cu(OH) 2 /PA/PEI-CM) with excellent mechanical and chemical stability was obtained. The Cu(OH) 2 /PA/PEI-CM exhibited efficient separation for various oil/water mixtures. Importantly, Cu(OH) 2 /PA/PEI-CM shows superior anti-crude oil fouling properties. A 280-cycle test (with only four cleanings) using a 2 cm 2 Cu(OH) 2 /PA/PEI demonstrates a large separation capacity, long-term stability and self-cleaning performance of the mesh during the treatment of a 11.2 L crude oil/water mixture. These distinct advantages give the Cu(OH) 2 /PA/PEI-CM great potential for practical application in separating oil pollutants from water.

Carboxylated cardo poly(arylene ether ketone)s (PAEK-COOH) is a thermally stable and hydrophilic membrane fabrication material. Herein, PAEK-COOH was employed as membrane material, being dissolved in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and 1,4-dioxane (DO) mixed solvent and activated by adding 1-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-3-ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC) and N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) to prepare polymer casting solution . Then the activated polymer film was immersed into polyethylenimine (PEI) aqueous solution that served as coagulation bath for taking the one-step chemical reaction-involved phase inversion process. As illustrated by the SEM images, the fabricated crosslinked tight ultrafiltration membrane had a dense and integrally skinned separation skin layer. Chemical composition and hydrophilicity of membrane surface were studied by ATR-FTIR and water contact angle , respectively. Those results revealed that, via the in situ crosslinking of activated carboxylic acid group and PEI along with the phase inversion process, the PEI molecules had been covalently bonded onto membrane surface and resulted in the increase of membrane hydrophilicity. The optimized membrane had a molecular weight cut off (MWCO) of 12.7 kDa and an isoelectric point of 7.4, indicating which is slightly positively charged. The one-step chemical reaction involved phase inversion between reactive macromolecules, i.e., activated PAEK-COOH original polymer film and PEI crosslinker in coagulant, was an efficient and convenient approach for fabrication of highly permeable and selective tight ultrafiltration membranes. Membrane had a dye solution permeability of 80–84 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 and Congo red (CR) rejection of 99.9% in 100 h long-term filtration testing, being capable for dye removal from textile wastewater .

In this paper, a novel adsorbent, Fe3O4@SiO2@PEI-NTDA, was first prepared by the immobilization of an amine and anhydride onto magnetic Fe3O4@SiO2 nanoparticles with polyethylenimine (PEI) and 1,4,5,8-naphthalenetetracarboxylic-dianhydride (NTDA) for the removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions. The structure of Fe3O4@SiO2@PEI-NTDA was systematically investigated; the results confirmed that amine and anhydride groups were successfully covalently grafted onto the surface of Fe3O4@SiO2, which showed a homogenous core–shell structure with three layers of about 300 nm diameter (Fe3O4 core: 200 nm, nSiO2 layer: 20 nm, and PEI-NTDA layer: 20 nm). The adsorption performance of Fe3O4@SiO2@PEI-NTDA NPs was evaluated for single Pb2+ and coexisting Cd2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, and Zn2+ ions in an aqueous solution in a batch system. The amine and anhydride groups may have a synergistic effect on Pb2+ removal through electrostatic interactions and chelation; Fe3O4@SiO2@PEI-NTDA NPs exhibited preferable removal of Pb2+ with maximum adsorption capacity of 285.3 mg g−1 for Pb2+ at a solution pH of 6.0, adsorbent dosage of 0.5 g L−1, initial Pb2+ concentration of 200 mg L−1 and contact time of 3 h. The adsorption mechanism conformed well to the Langmuir isotherm model, and the adsorption kinetic data were found to fit the pseudo-second order model. Fe3O4@SiO2@PEI-NTDA NPs could be recovered easily from their dispersion by an external magnetic field and demonstrated good recyclability and reusability for at least 6 cycles with a high adsorption capacity above 204.5 mg g−1. The magnetic adsorbents showed high stability with a weight loss below 0.65% in the acid leaching treatment by 2 M HCl solution for 144 h. This study indicates that Fe3O4@SiO2@PEI-NTDA NPs are new promising adsorbents for the effective removal of Pb2+ in wastewater treatment.

Ceramic–polymer nanocomposites with increased dielectric constant are desired to fabricate advanced film capacitors. However, the introduced ceramics usually lead to a decreased breakdown strength due to their extremely different properties from polymers, thus restricting the substantial improvement of energy density. Herein, a core–shell structured imide-polymer@barium titanate (BT) is designed, and a modulation strategy optimizing the dielectric behavior at the interface of BT-polyetherimide (PEI) by introducing phthalocyanine and –CF3 groups to enhance the dielectric response and construct energy traps is proposed to manufacture a high-performance polymeric dielectric. The interface between BT and PEI is reinforced owing to the electrostatic interaction between the polymer chains of the PEI matrix and the imide-polymer shell. Compared with BT-PEI, the modified BT-PEI nanocomposites exhibit improved comprehensive dielectric properties and breakdown strength. The prepared composite possesses the highest discharge energy density of 3.04 J cm−3 with a charge–discharge efficiency of 89.25%. Moreover, the dielectric properties of the prepared composites possess excellent thermal stability from 20 °C to 150 °C. This work provides a promising strategy to develop polymeric dielectrics for high-temperature applications.

ZIF-8, a metal-organic framework, has large sorption capacities for a series of heavy metals. However, it is difficult to be separated from aqueous solution, limiting its practical application in wastewater treatment . Herein, ZIF-8 was in-situ grown on the polyethyleneimine-functionalized alginate to construct the ZIF-8 @ALG-PEI aerogels with a three-dimensional network structure. This synthesis strategy not only overcomes the above-mentioned defects of ZIF-8, but also provides more functional groups, pores, and channels. The synthesized ZIF-8 @ALG-PEI aerogels exhibit outstanding removal performance towards Pb(II) and Cd(II) with maximum sorption capacity values of 295.986 and 249.838 mg·g −1 , respectively. The sorption of Pb(II) and Cd(II) on ZIF-8 @ALG-PEI is strongly affected by pH, but little influenced by ionic strength. In the multi-component sorption systems, ZIF-8 @ALG-PEI shows better sorption affinity and selectivity for Pb(II) than for Cd(II). The three-dimensional network structure constructed by alginate makes Pb(II) and Cd(II) easier to contact with the surfaces of ZIF-8 @ALG-PEI. The strong surface complexation of the O- and N-containing functional groups provided by ZIF-8 and PEI with Pb(II) and Cd(II) makes the largest contribution to the removal of Pb(II) and Cd(II) by ZIF-8 @ALG-PEI. In summary, the experimental findings of this work prove that the synthesized ZIF-8 @ALG-PEI aerogels have promising applications in practical wastewater treatment .

The reliable and accurate detection of glyphosate is urgently demanded because it is related to food and environmental safety. In this contribution, a PDA-PEI/Cu 2+ complex that possesses peroxidase-mimetic activity and stimulus-responsive fluorescence was fabricated by coordinating Cu 2+ with polydopamine-polyethyleneimine copolymer dots (PDA-PEI CPDs). With the introduction of Cu 2+ , the fluorescence intensity of PDA-PEI CPDs dropped sharply owing to the electron transfer effect. As a peroxidase-mimicking nanozyme , the PDA-PEI/Cu 2+ complex owns catalytic capacity to oxidize the colorless 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) into blue oxTMB, leading a further fluorescence quenching by internal filtering effect by oxTMB. Once the glyphosate participated, the fluorescence signal of PDA-PEI CPDs is recovered significantly because of the formation of more stable Glyp-Cu 2+ complexes, meanwhile the peroxidase-mimicking activity of PDA-PEI/Cu 2+ complex could be strongly hindered. According to this principle, a novel and extremely convenient ‘turn off’ colorimetric and ‘turn on’ fluorescence sensing platform can be established for dual-mode detection of glyphosate. The favorable sensitivity and selectivity and were verified in the analysis of glyphosate in the environment through the marriage of dual-signal sensing platform. The detection limit of the dual-mode glyphosate sensing platform was 103.82 ng/mL for colorimetric assay and 16.87 ng/mL for fluorescent assay, respectively. Satisfactory recoveries in the range of 96.40%–104.66% were obtained, indicating the potential of this method for application in complicated real sample. Thereby, this strategy broadens the applications of polydopamine nanomaterials and holds a promising application in determination of pesticide residues .

In recent decades, the incidence of breast cancer has increased year by year, posing a serious threat to human health and quality of life, and about 30% of breast cancer patients have human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) overexpression. Therefore, HER2 has become an important biomarker and indicator for the clinical evaluation of breast cancer in diagnosis, prognosis and recurrence. In this work, polyethyleneimine functionalized MoS 2 nanoflowers (PEI-MoS 2 NFs) with good electrical conductivity and abundant active binding sites were designed and employed as a sensing platform for immobilizing the primary antibody of HER2 (Ab 1 ). In addition, a La-MOF-PbO 2 composite with a large specific surface area and good conductivity was used to load lots of electroactive toluidine blue (TB) and the secondary antibody of HER2 (Ab 2 ) via gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) as the linker. Thus, the constructed sandwich-type electrochemical immunosensor was applied for sensitive detection of HER2, which showed a wide linear range from 100 fg mL −1 to 10 μg mL −1 with a lower limit of detection of 15.64 fg mL −1 . Therefore, the resulting immunosensor in this study would have a potential application in clinical bioanalysis.

Synthesizing of highly conductive conjugated polymers on target substrates must consider both the reaction regime and adhesion. Vapor phase polymerization (VPP) with a relatively simple procedure and mild reaction temperature (40–50 °C) is favorable for polymerization of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) on PET substrates. However, achieving high conductivity and good surface adhesion with target substrates has been challenging. Addressing this, we report that weak alkalinity and enriched amine groups of polyethyleneimine (PEI) were used as a base inhibitor and grafting agent during VPP to improve the PEDOT film's electrical and mechanical properties. The base-inhibited VPP results in a needle-like morphology with enhanced crystallinity in PEDOT, and with this, the conductivity of 1980 S/cm has been achieved. Moreover, many amine groups with high chemical activity in PEI make it successfully grafted on the polydopamine (PDA)-coated substrates. The surface grafting of PEI in PEDOT with PDA through Schiff base and Michael addition reactions make the PEDOT film resistant to ultrasonic cleaning in water or organic electrolyte, presenting significant potential in applying washable and cleanable electronics. We then demonstrate an anti-ultrasonic cleaning electrochromic display based on vapor phase polymerized PEDOT. This work experimentally confirms that PEI is critical in ensuring high-performance PEDOT films. Incorporating this technique on a PET-based medical face shield renders robust wearable electronics.

Bacterial infection is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality to humans worldwide. Thus, a method for nonspecific, sensitive, and rapid enrichment of such bacteria is essential for bacteria detection and treatment. This study demonstrates a self-made core-shell Fe3O4@Polydopamine@Polyethyleneimine magnetic beads (Fe3O4@PDA@PEI MBs) with a high density positive charge-based magnetic separation scheme for the broad-spectrum rapid enrichment of microorganisms in the liquid phase. MBs with a high-density positive charge have a strong electrostatic attraction to most microorganisms in nature. Our scheme is as follows: (1) wrapping dopamine (DA) on the iron oxide through self-polymerization and wrapping PEI on the outermost shell layer in a mode of crosslinking with the PDA; (2) subsequently, the Fe3O4@PDA@PEI MBs were used to concentrate microorganisms from the sample solution; (3) performing magnetic separation and calculating the adsorption efficiency. The as-prepared Fe3O4@PDA@PEI MBs composite was carefully characterized by zeta potential analysis, Value stream-mapping (VSM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Fourier transforms infrared spectrometry (FT-IR). In this study, both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria could be captured in three minutes through electrostatic interaction. Furthermore, the adsorption efficiency on gram-negative (>98%) is higher than that on gram-positive (>95%), allowing for a simple, rapid assay to enrich organisms in resource-limited settings. Keywords:magnetic beads;bacterial enrichment;magnetic separation;electrostatic interaction

A novel ultrasensitive electrochemical aptasensor was proposed for quantitative detection of Cd 2+ . To this end, flower-like polyethyleneimine-functionalized molybdenum disulfide-supported gold nanoparticles (PEI-MoS 2 [email protected] NPs) were used as substrates for the modification of bare gold electrodes (AuE). PEI-MoS 2 [email protected] NPs not only possessed excellent biocompatibility and large specific surface area to enhance the cDNA loading capacity, but also possessed good conductivity to accelerate the electron transfer rate. Furthermore, the preparation of dendritic platinum-palladium nanoparticles (PtPd NPs) can effectively load Cd 2+ -aptamer. Thionine and aptamers were loaded onto PtPd NPs to construct Thi-PtPd NPs-aptamer signal probes. The signal probes were captured by the cDNA immobilized on the electrode via base-pairing rule, and the signal of Thi was detected by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). In the presence of Cd 2+ , aptamer-cDNA unwinded, and the combination of aptamer and Cd 2+ caused the signal probes to fall off the electrode and the electrical signal decreases. Under optimal conditions, the proposed aptasensor exhibited a linear relationship between the logarithm of Cd 2+ concentration and the current response over a wide range of 1 × 10 −3 nM to 1 × 10 2 nM, with a detection limit of 2.34 × 10 −4 nM. At the same time, the aptasensor was used to detect Cd 2+ in tap water with satisfactory results. In addition, it has good reproducibility, selectivity and stability, and has broad application prospects in heavy metal analysis.

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes, widely used for their stability, face limitations due to the hardly adjustable pore size in nanoscale and inherent hydrophobicity. To address this, we proposed a co-deposition method incorporating dopamine (DA), polyethyleneimine (PEI), and silicon dioxide (SiO 2 ) nanoparticles with glutaraldehyde cross-linking for precise regulation of pore size and hydrophilicity in PVDF hollow fiber membranes. Notably, the pore diameter reduced from 119.0 ± 3.55 nm to 18.4 ± 0.36 nm, while the contact angle decreased from 107.7° to 40.9°. This simultaneous regulation led to a high-performance PDA/PEI/SiO 2 -PVDF hydrophilic ultrafiltration membrane with a rejection rate exceeding 99% for 20 nm nanoparticles in a long-term simulated separation experiment while achieving a significant protein permeability of 97% in BSA permeation experiments. Additionally, the membrane demonstrated exceptional long-term stability, offering a novel approach for tuning the performance of ultrafiltration/microfiltration membranes.

A rapid sandwiched immunoassay of microcystin-LR (MC-LR) in water is proposed with flow injection chemiluminescence detection. The magnetic beads (MBs) were first modified with polyethyleneimine (PEI) by acylamide bond between the carboxyl group on the surface of MBs and the primary amine group in PEI, followed by immobilizing of anti-MC-LR (Ab1) onto PEI with glutaraldehyde as linkage. The resulting Ab1 modified MBs captured the target MC-LR in water, reacted with the horseradish peroxidase and anti-MC-LR co-immobilized silica nanoparticles, and were detected with flow injection chemiluminescence. When using PEI/MBs as the carrier of anti-MC-LR, the CL signal was greatly enhanced up to 9-fold compared to that using MBs without PEI modification. The CL signal was further amplified 13-fold when Si/Ab2 was used as the signal probe. Under the optimal conditions, the present immunoassay exhibited a wide quantitative range from 0.02 to 200 μg L−1 with a detection limit of 0.006 μg L−1, which was much lower than the WHO provisional guideline limit of 1.0 μg L−1 for MC-LR in drinking water. The relative standard deviation was 4.8% and the recoveries for the spiked samples ranged from 84% to 115%, which indicated acceptable precision and accuracy for MC-LR. The present method is easier to perform and less time-consuming (the entire analysis process lasted about 40 minutes) and has been applied to the detection of MC-LR in different water samples successfully.
