Mild hydrolysis and upgrading utilization of waste PET: Preparation of regenerated TPA and MOF materials and study of their adsorption performance

Wei Lin,Meiling Zhang,Shun Zhang,Sheng Shi,Zeyu Wang,Chengyong Gao,Shuhua Wang,Enbin Zhu

Traditional alkaline hydrolysis is often used for recycling poly (ethylene terephthalate). However, its reliance on harsh conditions such as strong alkalis and high temperatures leads to equipment corrosion and environmental pollution. To address the limitations of harsh traditional hydrolysis, this study presents a mild and eco-friendly strategy using recyclable solid Li 2 CO 3 in an ethanol-water solvent. This method efficiently degrades waste PET into terephthalic acid (TPA) with >99% purity, minimizing equipment corrosion and pollution. Instead of repolymerization, the recovered TPA is upcycled to synthesize MIL-68(Al), a metal-organic framework (MOF) with superior adsorption properties. The resulting MilL-68(Al) demonstrates rapid and high-capacity adsorption for tetracycline (540.54 mg/g within 5 min), fitting Langmuir and pseudo-second-order models. Furthermore, it exhibits robust stability against environmental interference and excellent reusability, maintaining >95% efficiency after five cycles. This work offers a dual solution for plastic waste upgrading and antibiotic pollution control.

Highly thermally conductive and insulating PET nonwoven fabric/PDMS sandwich composite film by synergism of boron nitride nanosheets and alumina particles

Mu-yuan Song,Chuan-guo Ma,Xiao-lei Li,Hong-tao Chi,Ping Zhang,Pei-bang Dai

The accumulation of heat in electronic devices puts forward an urgent demand for thermal interface materials. It is still a great challenge to achieve the good comprehensive performance of high thermal conductivity (TC), insulation, flexibility and tensile strength. In this work, polyester-based nonwoven fabric (NWF) was coated with boron nitride nanosheets (BNNS) by dispersion and interfacial reinforcement of cellulose nanofibers to obtain a three-dimensional thermally conductive network skeleton (BNNS@NWF). The sandwich-structured composite film was assembled by introducing alumina (Al 2 O 3 )/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) layers on the top and bottom surfaces of BNNS@NWF using scratch coating and hot pressing processes. The composite film has a high TC of 6.42 W/mK at 45.8 wt% BNNS content, and has excellent insulation with a volume resistivity of 1.06 × 10 15 Ω cm. This is due to the long-range effective thermal conduction path constructed by BNNS, the bridging effect of Al 2 O 3 and the synergistic effect of the two fillers. PDMS helps the composite film maintain good flexibility and good TC stability after 30 bending cycles. The PET nonwoven interlayer gives the composite film good mechanical properties with a tensile strength of 17.5 MPa. This work provides a strategy for the efficient preparation of flexible composite films with high TC and insulation properties, which is of great importance for the development of innovative thermal interface materials. Highlights A sandwich-structured composite film was prepared by a simple scale-up method. Al 2 O 3 and BNNS achieves synergistic enhancement of thermal conductivity. The film has a high thermal conductivity of 6.42 W/mK and electrical insulation. The film shows good flexibility, high tensile and thermal management properties.

PET-featured fluorescent test papers with smartphone platform based on chitosan carbon dots for visual detecting chloramphenicol in animal-derived foods

Xiaopeng Yang,Xingyu Hou,Lei Wang,Lin Hou,Yuying Han,Mingjun Li,Lixin Ding,Xue Sun

Conventional methods for chloramphenicol (CAP) detection often rely on sophisticated instrumentation and complex sample pretreatment, limiting their applicability for rapid on-site screening. Herein, a highly sensitive and selective fluorescent probe based on chitosan-derived carbon dots (CS-CDs) is developed via a one-step hydrothermal synthesis. The as-prepared CS-CDs exhibit a high quantum yield of 44.5% and excellent photostability. The fluorescence quenching toward CAP is attributed to a photo-induced electron transfer mechanism. The proposed sensing platform demonstrates a linear detection range from 0.1 to 160 μg L −1 with a detection limit as low as 0.03 μg L −1 , which is well below the international residue limits. To address the demand for point-of-care testing, portable test strips integrated with smartphone-based RGB analysis are fabricated, enabling visual semi-quantitative detection of CAP in animal-derived foods and demonstrating the potential of carbon dot-based sensors for rapid on-site antibiotic screening.

Wang Rui,Li Shumiao,Huang Hanjiang,Liu Botong,Gao Lu,Qu Meiru,Wei Yanying,Wei Jianfei

An environmentally friendly PET-based Carbon Dots (PET-CDs) with excellent fluorescence properties were prepared with waste PET bottle, pyromellitic acid and ammonia water as raw materials by one-step hydrothermal method. The preparation mechanism of PET-CDs was as follows: PET first underwent ammonolysis reaction to produce terephthalic acid diamide and ethylene glycol, and then dehydrated and carbonized with pyromellitic acid to form PET-CDs. The as-prepared PET-CDs exhibit excitation-independent emission properties in the range from 340 to 440 nm, and the fluorescence quantum yield is as high as 87.36%. In terms of structure, PET-CDs is a spherical structure with an average particle size of 2.0 nm, and its surface contains carboxyl and amino groups. The PET-CDs were dispersed in a PVA matrix to obtain an light blocking films(LBFs) for 250–450 nm light with excellent properties, and its transparency for 450–700 nm light is good. In addition, PET-CDs was used in the fields of LED, and it was found that the color coordinate for the LED assembled with PET-CDs and 395 nm LED chips is (0.55, 0.44) and the correlated color temperature is 2018 K.

PET Imaging of P2X7 Receptor (P2X7R) for Neuroinflammation with Improved Radiosynthesis of Tracer [18F]4A in Mice and Non-human Primates

Guolong Huang,Yifan Qiu,Lei Bi,Huiyi Wei,Guocong Li,Zhijun Li,Peizhen Ye,Min Yang,Yanfang Shen,Hao Liu,Lu Wang,Hongjun Jin

The P2X7 receptor (P2X7R) is a key neuroinflammation target in a variety of neurodegenerative diseases. Improved radiosynthesis was developed according to the previously reported P2X7R antagonist GSK1482160. Biodistribution, radiometabolite, and dynamic positron emission tomography/computed tomography-magnetic resonance imaging (PET/CT-MRI) of the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) rat model and the transgenic mouse model of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) revealed a stable, low uptake of [18F]4A in the brain of healthy rats but a higher standardized uptake value ratio (SUVR) in LPS-treated rats (1.316 ± 0.062, n = 3) than in sham (1.093 ± 0.029, n = 3). There were higher area under curves (AUCs) in the neocortex (25.12 ± 1.11 vs 18.94 ± 1.47), hippocampus (22.50 ± 3.41 vs 15.90 ± 1.59), and basal ganglia (22.26 ± 0.81 vs 15.32 ± 1.76) of AD mice (n = 3) than the controls (n = 3) (p < 0.05). Furthermore, 50 min dynamic PET in healthy nonhuman primates (NHPs) indicated [18F]4A could penetrate the blood–brain barrier (BBB). In conclusion, [18F]4A from this study is a potent P2X7R PET tracer that warrants further neuroinflammation quantification in human studies.

Flexible stretchable electrothermally/photothermally dual-driven heaters from nano-embedded hierarchical CuxS-Coated PET fabrics for all-weather wearable thermal management

Qi Zhang,Dong Liu,Wei Pan,Haiyan Pei,Kunlun Wang,Shengang Xu,Yingliang Liu,Shaokui Cao

The multifunctional photoelectronic devices are recently attracting much more attention due to their potential enlarged applications. The flexible stretchable electrothermally/photothermally dual-driven heaters for all-weather wearable thermal management are presented in this work with nano-embedded hierarchical Cu x S-coated PET fabrics. Herein, the hierarchical nano-embedded Cu x S film is fabricated via a simple chemical bath method for high electrical conductivity and highly efficient inelastic collision of electro/photo-generated carriers. The hierarchical nano-embedded Cu x S morphology produces the low sheet resistance of 1.26 Ω sq -1 and the super low total heat transfer coefficient of 3.256 × 10 -5 W/ o C·mm 2 , which lead to the high-efficient electro/photo-dual-driven heating effect in the Cu x S@PET fabrics. The saturated temperature on the as-fabricated flexible wearable heaters reaches up to 172 °C. The thermal conversion devices also bear the excellent stability, reproducibility, stretchability, controllability and corrosion-resistant characteristics. Interestingly, their excellent thermal conversion performance could be achieved by freely exchanging the driving power sources, such as electricity-supplying equipment, 635-nm laser, infrared physiotherapy lamp and solar simulator, which provides a necessary precondition for the all-weather applications of flexible wearable heaters. The as-fabricated electro/photo-dual-driven heaters on the Cu x S@PET fabrics have the promising applications in wearable electronics, all-weather self-heating facilities, out/in-vivo physiotherapy, and so on.

Experimental analysis on products distribution, characterization and mechanism of waste polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) degradation in sub-/supercritical water

Zegang Fu,Ye Shui Zhang,Guozhao Ji,Aimin Li

Supercritical water (SCW) treatment of plastics is a clean technology in the ‘waste-to-energy’ path. In this work, PP and PET plastics were processed by sub-/supercritical water. The results showed that temperature was the most important factor of the PP and PET degradation. The influence of factors on the degradation of plastics follows the following order: temperature > residence time > plastic/water ratio. These factors influenced the yield of gas products by promoting or inhibiting various reactions (such as reverse water gas shift reaction, methylation reaction, and Fischer-Tropsch synthesis reaction). Besides, the composition of liquid oil was also analyzed. The main composition of the liquid oil produced by PET was benzoic acid and acetaldehyde, which were generated from the decarboxylation of terephthalic acid (TPA) and dehydration reaction of ethylene glycol (EG). The liquid oil from PP was mainly long-chain olefins , long-chain alkanes, cycloalkanes , etc., which were formed by the interaction of various methyl, alkyl, hydroxyl, and other free radicals . This study could build fundamental theories of plastic mixture treatment.

Shape-memory polyurethane elastomer originated from waste PET plastic and their composites with carbon nanotube for sensitive and stretchable strain sensor

Xing Zhou,Guosheng Wang,Dexiang Li,Qi Wang,Keming Zhu,Yaya Hao,Yueyang Xu,Neng Li

Chemical recycling of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles is prospective for reducing waste plastics. The transformation of waste PET into valuable composites in high efficiency still remains a formidable challenge. Here we report the synthesis of polyurethane elastomer (PUE) by using the degraded products from waste PET via one-pot chain extended process. Then, the composites composed of PUE as substrate with carbon nanotubes as fillers are applied in fabricating stretchable strain sensor. The results show that the degraded product was successfully introduced into the polyurethane chains. The PUE chains showed disordered stacking as the degraded product content increased, with the modulus and elongation at break were up to 763.9 %. The composites assembled strain sensors exhibited stable sensing performance and excellent durability after 1000 cycles at 20 % tensile strain . This may supply a path to efficiently recycle waste PET plastic into valuable and functional composites, and even devices.

All-in-one integrated flexible PE@PET/MXene films for high-performance electromagnetic shields with self-reinforced conductivity and mechanical properties

Zhou Sha,Huan He,Hongjie Ma,Bo Hong,Jian Lu,Xiang Fei,Meifang Zhu

MXene-based composites are deemed as promising electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding candidates to address the rapidly increasing electromagnetic interference and radiation concerns. However, developing high-performance flexible polymer-MXene composites with excellent EMI shielding efficiency (EMI SE), good mechanical properties and superior serving stability is a significant challenge. Herein, a type of all-in-one designed lightweight, thin, ultra-flexible PE@PET/MXene films are developed using a novel PE@PET nonwoven fabric (NWF) as the supporter. A mussel-inspired polydopamine modification facilitates the uniform loading of MXene, achieving high electrical conductivity of the resultant PE@PET/MXene films. A simple hot-pressing process is then employed to melt the sheath PE component of PE@PET to serve as a “self-glue” in adhering and wrapping the loaded MXene nanosheets, while maintaining the core PET fibers as the internal “steel” skeleton. As such, the resultant PE@PET/MXene films exhibit multiple self-enhancement metrics involving high mechanical strength, good electrical conductivity, robust serving stability, and superior EMI shielding performance. An optimized PE@PET/MXene film can preserve an excellent EMI SE of 50.44 dB and an ultra-high absolute shielding effectiveness (SSE/t) of 10606 dB cm 2  g −1 . The versatility of PE@PET/MXene EMI shielding films is further indicated by integrating the flame-retardant additives to endow its flame-retardant function, demonstrating excellent versability and expandability.

Fabrication of High Performance PET/TLCP Fibers through the Synergistic Interfacial Enhancement and Compatibilization of Functional 1D and 2D Carbon Nanomaterials

Wenguang Yu,Xuefeng Gao,Yuzhou Wang,Xuechen Wang,Xingxiang Zhang

The maleic anhydride functionalized graphene oxide (GO-MA) is fabricated by an efficient and solvent-free Diels–Alder reaction. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET)/thermotropic liquid crystal polyester (TLCP), PET/TLCP/GO-MA, PET/TLCP/aminated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-NH 2 ), and PET/TLCP/GO-MA/MWCNTs-NH 2 composite fibers are systematically melt-spun. The structure and compatibilizing effects of GO-MA and MWCNTs-NH 2 on the mechanical, thermal, and crystallization properties of the composite fibers are indicated. The non-isothermal crystallization kinetics and X-ray diffraction (XRD) data show that TLCP and nanofillers can change the crystalline morphology of PET. The mechanical properties of the fibers rise with increasing TLCP content. The tensile strength 929 MPa and modulus 17.5 GPa of the fibers with 7 wt% TLCP and 0.25 wt% nanofillers (0.1 wt% GO-MA and 0.15 wt% MWCNTs-NH 2 ) are significantly higher than those with 7 wt% TLCP (tensile strength 622 MPa and modulus 16.1 GPa) and even higher than those with 15% TLCP (tensile strength 836 MPa, and modulus 18.0 GPa). When the GO-MA and MWCNTs-NH 2 co-exist, the anti-dripping phenomenon is improved. Therefore, the TLCP, GO, and MWCNTs synergistically strengthens the mechanical properties. This is promising for the industrial fabrication of high-strength fibers.

Time-programmed release of curcumin and Zn2+ from multi-layered RSF coating modified PET graft for improvement of graft-host integration

Han Gao,Ni Chen,Luyi Sun,Dandan Sheng,Yuting Zhong,Mingru Huang,Chengxuan Yu,Xing Yang,Yuefeng Hao,Shiyi Chen,Zhengzhong Shao,Jun Chen

Artificial graft serves as the primary grafts used in the clinical management of sports-related injuries . Until now, optimizing its graft-host integration remains a great challenge due to the excessive inflammatory response during the inflammatory phase, coupled with an absence of tissue-inductive capacity during the regeneration phase. Here, a multi-layered regenerated silk fibroin (RSF) coating loaded with curcumin (Cur) and Zn 2+ on the surface of the PET grafts (Cur@Zn 2+ @PET) was designed and fabricated for providing time-matched regulation specifically tailored to address issues arising at both inflammatory and regeneration phases, respectively. The release of Cur and Zn 2+ from the Cur@Zn 2+ @PET followed a time-programmed pattern in vitro. Specifically, cellular assays revealed that Cur@Zn 2+ @PET initially released Cur during the inflammatory phase, thereby markedly inhibit the expression of inflammatory cytokines TNF-a and IL-1β. Meanwhile, a significant release of Zn 2+ was major part during the regeneration phase, serving to induce the osteogenic differentiation of rBMSC. Furthermore, rat model of anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) showed that through time-programmed drug release, Cur@Zn 2+ @PET could suppress the formation of fibrous interface (FI) caused by inflammatory response, combined with significant new bone (NB) formation during regeneration phase. Consequently, the implementation of the Cur@Zn 2+ @PET characterized by its time-programmed release patterns hold considerable promise for improving graft-host integration for sports-related injuries.

Strategies for the construction of superamphiphilic surfaces of PET films based on the synergistic modification of UV-cured EP/HEA/CNTs

Yinchuan Pu,Duoduo Huang,Wei Xu

Recently, it is urgent for PET films to demonstrate both superhydrophilicity and superoleophilicity to meet evolving industrial demands in applications such as precision printing and biomedical interfaces. This work developed a superamphiphilic PET surface through synergistic integration of oleophilic/hydrophilic units and micro/nano-structures, utilizing a highly efficient UV-curable technology. Epoxy resin (EP) and hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA) were utilised as the crosslinking matrix, with carboxylated carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as functional fillers for micro/nano-structures formation. The modified PET films exhibited complete wetting behavior, showing 0° contact angles for both water and diiodomethane, along with a 66.8 % increase in surface energy (81.4 mN/m) compared to unmodified films. The E1H2C3 coating maintained 3B-grade adhesion without compromising tensile strength. Futhermore, the highly conductive CNTs significantly enhanced the film's antistatic properties, ultimately reducing resistivity by 11 orders of magnitude versus pristine samples.
