Preparation of chitosan-coated polystyrene microspheres for the analysis of trace Pb(II) ions in salt by GF-AAS assisted with solid-phase extraction

Xingyu Ding,Xin Teng,Zhuxin She,Yi Li,Yuanyuan Liu,Ying Zhuang,Chaochao Wang

The content of heavy metals is an important index to measure the quality and safety of salt. However, due to the high content of Na(I) in salt causing a large background interference, it is difficult to accurately analyze trace Pb(II) through the existing atomic absorption spectrometry. Therefore, it is of great significance to design a new solid-phase extraction (SPE) material for the removal and determination of Pb(II) from salt. Herein, using polystyrene microspheres as carriers, the chitosan-coated polystyrene SPE fillers PS@SO3H@G-CTS were synthesized by sulfonating with sulfonyl chloride, coating with chitosan and crosslinking with glutaraldehyde successively. The structure was characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, SEM, XRD and thermal stability. The SPE column prepared by PS@SO3H@G-CTS was used for the adsorption of heavy metal Pb(II) in salt, with 0.1 mol L−1 of HCl as Na(I) eluent and 2 mmol L−1 of EDTA-2Na as Pb(II) eluent. The salt concentration below 0.03 g mL−1 could better reflect the performance of column, with the recovery rate of 101.17–106.45% by standard addition. The PS@SO3H@G-CTS fillers could remove Na(I) under certain salt concentration, so as to accurately determine Pb(II) in the actual sample. Their adsorbability was undisturbed by common anions and low concentration of cations.

Highly sensitive electroanalysis of Pb(II) in Chinese herbal medicine by the activated Co site and electron transfer medium S over Co9S8@MoS2 heterostructures

Juan Wei,Jin-Tao Cheng,Min Luo,Xi Wang,Xiao-Yu Xie,Xian Wu,Wei Shen,Pang-Da Dai,Zong-Yin Song,Meng Yang

Designing a highly sensitive electrochemical sensing interface and elucidating the mechanism of enhanced electrochemical signals from the perspective of electronic structure are crucial for accurate detection of heavy metal ions (HIMIs). In this study, a composite transition metal sulfide Co 9 S 8 @MoS 2 heterostructure was developed for the high-sensitivity detection of Pb(II) in Chinese herbal medicine, which achieved a high sensitivity of 103.3 ± 0.5 μA μM −1 and a detection limit of 0.01 μM. Moreover, the fundamental reason for the excellent detection of Pb(II) was investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density functional theory (DFT). The results indicated that the recombination of the heterojunction not only catalyzes the activation of the Co site in Co 9 S 8 but also promotes S as a medium in the electron channel for increased charge transfer. In addition, the proposed method displayed anti-interference ability with outstanding stability and reproducibility in the presence of other HMIs. Importantly, the highly sensitive detection of Pb(II) has also been inherited in herbal Rehmannia glutinosa samples, demonstrating its potential for practical application in the detection of heavy metal ions in Chinese herbal medicine. This work provides essential theoretical guidance for constructing high-performance electrochemically sensitive interfaces from electronic structure-controlled sensing materials.

Synthesis of zeolite-geopolymer composites with high zeolite content for Pb(II) removal by a simple two-step method using fly ash and metakaolin

Shuangjian Yang,Liyun Yang,Mengdan Gao,Hao Bai,Tetsuya Nagasaka

Zeolite-geopolymer composites synthesized using industrial solid waste have mechanical strength, high specific surface area and cation exchange ability. This self-supporting adsorbent can replace natural heulandite zeolite to remove metal ions . In this study, a zeolite-geopolymer composite with a high zeolite content was synthesized by a simple two-step process using fly ash and metakaolin as raw materials. The compressive capacity, pore structure and adsorption ability for Pb(II) in the solution of the composite were analyzed and compared with natural heulandite zeolite. Through the two-step synthesis, the dynamic conditions of zeolite crystallization and geopolymer solidification were determined, and the zeolite-geopolymer composite with 57.5% zeolite A content and 6.42 MPa compressive strength was successfully prepared. The composite had hierarchical pore sizes, including microporous, mesoporous and macroporous pores, and its specific surface area was larger than that of natural heulandite zeolite. The Pb(II) adsorption capacity of the composite could reach 446.73 mg/g through ion exchange and hydroxyl reactions in solution, which was higher than the value of 323.37 mg/g for natural heulandite zeolite. Therefore, zeolite-geopolymer composites with high zeolite content synthesized by the simple two-step method can be used as self-supporting adsorbents to replace natural heulandite zeolites for removing metal ions from water.

The behavior and mechanism of the adsorption of Pb(II) and Cd(II) by a porous double network porous hydrogel derived from peanut shells

Zhilin Yang,Tao Yang,Yuebei Yang,Xiaoyun Yi,Xinrui Hao,Tian Xie,Chang Jun Liao

Adsorption has been deemed as one of the most efficient technologies for the removal of heavy metals from water because of its diversity of adsorbents, low cost, and simple operation. In this study, acrylic acid underwent free radical polymerization in an aqueous solution of lignocellulose extracted from peanut shells (PS) to form a porous double network hydrogel adsorbent, PS(H)-PAA. The PS(H)-PAA hydrogel had high water permeability and a porous network structure, which could provide a fast channel for metal ions diffusion from solution into hydrogel and gave rise to good adsorption performance. The adsorption process of heavy metal ions on the PS(H)-PAA hydrogel was identified to be a spontaneous endothermic adsorption and reached kinetic equilibrium within only 10 min for Pb(II) and 60 min for Cd(II) at an initial concentration of 100 mg/L using 0.5 g/L of adsorbent. According to a Langmuir model, at T =313 K the maximum theoretical adsorption capacities were as high as 250.42 and 109.89 mg/g for Pb(II) (pH 5) and Cd(II) (pH 6), respectively. Moreover, a PS(H)-PAA hydrogel showed good adsorption performance over a pH range of 4–9. The surface properties, dimensional morphology, and thermal stability of the adsorbents were characterized with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and derivative thermogravimetry. The adsorption behavior under different conditions (such as pH, contact time, ion strength, and interfering ions) and the adsorption mechanism were studied. The adsorption mechanism indicated that oxygen- and nitrogen-containing functional groups play a major role in the adsorption process, primarily through chemical interactions, and secondarily through physical interactions. In addition, these adsorbents exhibited strong chemical stability, had very high swelling ratios in water, and could be recycled easily. These results indicate the developed PS(H)-PAA hydrogel is an environmentally friendly and potentially effective adsorbent for the removal of heavy metals.

Selective, highly efficient extraction of Cr(III), Pb(II) and Fe(III) from complex water environment with a tea residue derived porous gel adsorbent

Shuaizhong Zhang,Chengzhen Liu,Yongkai Yuan,Minghao Fan,Dandan Zhang,Dongfeng Wang,Ying Xu

A novel macroporous (~150 μm) double network hydrogel (TR/PAA) was prepared from tea residue and acrylic acid, and its performance was systematically evaluated. The static adsorption experiments showed that gel exhibited high selectivity and adsorption capacity, ultrafast kinetics (~10 min) for Cr(III), Pb(II) and Fe(III). The adsorption behavior showed heterogeneous and chemisorption process adsorption capacities of 206.19, 253.16, and 94.88 mg g −1 for Cr(III), Pb(II) and Fe(III), respectively. In pluralistic systems, TR/PAA showed the adsorption order of Fe(III) > Cr(III) > Pb(II). Mechanism studies confirm that nitrogen and oxygen-containing functional groups play a major role in the adsorption process. In the fixed-bed column experiments, the treatment volume of simulated wastewater reached 1400 bed volumes (BV) (21.6 L), producing only 7 BV (323 mL) eluent. This work provides a new avenue for the combination of TR/PAA reuse and heavy metal removal, which is expected to be applied in actual wastewater treatment.

Effective coating of crosslinked polyethyleneimine on elastic spongy monolith for highly efficient batch and continuous flow adsorption of Pb(II) and acidic red 18

Yan Liu,Qiang Gao,Chen Li,Shu Liu,Kaisheng Xia,Bo Han,Chenggang Zhou

Adsorption using monolithic adsorbents is an attractive emerging technology for water treatment, but it still remains a great challenge to facilely combine microscopically a well-developed surface functionality with a macroscopic architecture. In this work, we reported a simple, low-cost, and effective method for constructing uniform coating of crosslinked polyethyleneimine (PEI) on monolithic melamine sponge (MS) through pre-modification with polydopamine (PDA), followed by a rotary evaporation-driven “crosslinking–surface deposition” process. Due to the amine groups-rich surface and highly open porous structure, the resulting monolithic adsorbent (PEI@PDA/MS) exhibited high adsorption capacities and fast adsorption kinetics toward Pb(II) (231.81 mg g −1 ; < 100 min) and acid red 18 (AR18, 464.53 mg g −1 ; < 180 min). Moreover, PEI@PDA/MS possessed excellent shape memory property and could be manually collected with tweezers, indicating its great operational convenience in recycling. Cyclic adsorption/desorption experiments confirmed its satisfying reusability. Continuous flow adsorption behaviors of the PEI@PDA/MS monolith were further investigated by directly using it as stationary phase, which also exhibited high removal efficiencies for Pb(II) and AR18. Besides, adsorption mechanisms based on the characterization analyses were also proposed. Our study provides an effective strategy for fabricating high-quality PEI-based monolithic adsorbents with great potential to be used in environmental remediation.

A novel polyamine-type starch/glycidyl methacrylate copolymer for adsorption of Pb(II), Cu(II), Cd(II) and Cr(III) ions from aqueous solutions

Youning Chen,Wei Zhao,Huan Wang,Xiaohua Meng,Linjie Zhang

A novel polyamine-type starch/glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) copolymer with a high capacity for the adsorption of heavy metal ions was prepared via graft copolymerization of GMA and corn starch and a subsequent amination reaction between amino group of diethylenetriamine and epoxy group in GMA. The copolymers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, and adsorption properties on modified starch of Cu(II), Pb(II), Cd(II) and Cr(III) were studied. By analysing the relationship between adsorption capacity and pH, adsorption isotherms and adsorption kinetics, it is proved that the adsorption of the four metal ions is mainly based on the chemical adsorption of coordination. The maximum adsorption capacities of the copolymer were up to 2.33, 1.25, 0.83 and 0.56 mmol g−1 for Cu(II), Pb(II), Cd(II) and Cr(III), respectively. The adsorption of the four concerned metal ions was hardly affected by common coexisting ions such as Na(I), K(I), Ca(II) and Mg(II), whereas it was slightly decreased when Fe(II) and Zn(II) coexisted in the solution, which illustrates the selective adsorption of Cu(II), Pb(II), Cd(II) and Cr(III) from wastewater. After 10 cycles of adsorption–desorption experiments, there was no significant change in the adsorption capacity, indicating that the polyamine-type starch/GMA copolymer has high adsorption capacity and good reusability.

Fabrication of xanthate-modified chitosan/poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) composite hydrogel for the selective adsorption of Cu(II), Pb(II) and Ni(II) metal ions

Shuping Wu,Fan Wang,Haikuan Yuan,Lijuan Zhang,Shimin Mao,Xijian Liu,Njud S. Alharbi,Sohrab Rohani,Jie Lu

A novel xanthate-modified chitosan/poly( N -isopropylacrylamide) (X-CS/NIPAAm) composite hydrogel was fabricated by a facile two-step method for the selective adsorption of Cu(II), Pb(II) and Ni(II) metal ions from aqueous solutions. The equilibrium adsorption data fitted well to the Langmuir model and the adsorption kinetic data followed the pseudo-second-order model. The maximum equilibrium adsorption capacities of composite hydrogel to Cu(II), Pb(II) and Ni(II) at 293   K were about 115.1, 172.0 and 66.9   mg   g −1 , respectively. The thermodynamics parameters showed that the adsorption processes to Cu(II), Pb(II) and Ni(II) were spontaneous and exothermic. The interactions between metal ions for multi-components systems were evaluated by the values of Q b /Q s and Q t /Q s . The adsorption mechanism was analyzed by XPS spectra and the Hard–Soft, Acids–Bases (HSAB) theory. The X-CS/NIPAAm composite hydrogel could be regenerated and repeatedly utilized at least five cycles without obvious adsorption capacity loss.

Comparative study of layered double hydroxides intercalated by MoS42− and Mo3S132− on removal of Cu(II) and Pb(II): Adsorption mechanism and environmental stability

Menglan Zhao,Yu Wang,Xiaoyu Liu,Jiyue Ding,Pingke Yan,Qian Zhang,Yujuan Gao,Zilin Meng

Mg Al layered double hydroxides (LDHs) intercalated by Mo 3 S 13 2− and MoS 4 2− (Mo 3 S 13 -LDHs/MoS 4 -LDHs) were prepared through the ion exchange method and compared their removing ability of Cu(II), Pb(II) from wastewater. When the batch experiment conducted at dosage 0.3 g/L, pH neutral, contact time 360 min, concentration 6 mmol/L and temperature 298 K, the adsorption capacity of Cu(II)/Pb(II) onto Mo 3 S 13 -LDHs and MoS 4 -LDHs was 2.76, 4.85 and 2.15, 4.66 mmol/g, Mo 3 S 13 -LDHs showed a higher adsorption capacity, which was because the larger amount of adsorption sites on Mo 3 S 13 2− . In mixed systems, Mo 3 S 13 -LDHs/MoS 4 -LDHs exhibited the preferential selectivity of Pb(II). When Mo 3 S 13 -LDHs/MoS 4 -LDHs adsorbed the low concentrations of Cu(II)/Pb(II), Mo 3 S 13 2− /MoS 4 2− first captured heavy metals and fixed into the interlayer. With the increase of concentration, Cu(II)/Pb(II) were still captured by the interlayered Mo 3 S 13 2− unlike MoS 4 -LDHs that hydroxyl groups onto LDHs began to capture Cu(II)/Pb(II). In the dynamic adsorption experiment, Mo 3 S 13 -LDHs could treat a larger volume of sewage than MoS 4 -LDHs. Mo 3 S 13 -LDHs exhibited better selectivity for Cu(II)/Pb(II) under the interference of organic and other metal ions in wastewater, and heavy metals after the treatment by Mo 3 S 13 -LDHs were more stable in the environment. Therefore, Mo 3 S 13 -LDHs could be considered as an environmentally stable adsorbent to remove heavy metals from wastewater compared to MoS 4 -LDHs.

Zeolite-supported nanoscale zero-valent iron: New findings on simultaneous adsorption of Cd(II), Pb(II), and As(III) in aqueous solution and soil

Zhangtao Li,Lu Wang,Jun Meng,Xingmei Liu,Jianming Xu,Fan Wang,Philip Brookes

Nanoscale zero-valent iron (NZVI) has a high adsorption capacity for heavy metals, but it forms aggregates easily. In this study, zeolite-supported nanoscale zero-valent iron (Z-NZVI) was synthesized from a simplified liquid-phase reduction of iron(III) salts which simultaneously adsorbed As(III), Cd(II) and Pb(II) from aqueous solution and soil. Scanning electron micrographs showed that aggregation was eliminated and the NZVI evenly dispersed onto the surface of zeolite. FTIR spectra reveal that NZVI was protected from oxidization on the surface of Z-NZVI. XRD and XPS patterns confirmed the formation of Cd(OH) 2 , Pb 0 , and FeAsO 4 in Z-NZVI after adsorption. The experimental maximum adsorption capacity of Z-NZVI was 11.52   mg As(III)/g, 48.63   mg Cd(II)/g, and 85.37   mg Pb(II)/g at pH 6, respectively, much higher than that of zeolite. Batch experiments indicate that various adsorption mechanisms including electrostatic adsorption, ionic exchange, oxidation, reduction, co-precipitation, and complexation coexisted with the selected heavy metals. Due to the formation of multiphase compounds on the Z-NZVI, the synergy and competition among heavy metals were concurrent. Most arsenic, cadmium and lead in the soil samples were immobilized after mixing with 30   g/kg Z-NZVI. These results suggest that Z-NZVI has great potential for treating water and soil multi-contaminated with heavy metals.

Simultaneous detection of Cd(II) and Pb(II) by differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry at a nitrogen-doped microporous carbon/Nafion/bismuth-film electrode

Lili Xiao,Hongbo Xu,Shenghai Zhou,Ting Song,Huanhuan Wang,Shouzhu Li,Wei Gan,Qunhui Yuan

Recently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their carbon derivates have been demonstrated as new electrode modifying materials for electrochemical sensing. In this work, the first example of the detection of heavy metal ions with a MOF-derived sensing platform was presented. The platform was based on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified by Nafion-bismuth/nitrogen doped microporous carbon (NMC) composite, in which the NMC was derived from a zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8). The good dispersibility, large specific surface area (941 m 2   g −1 ), high nitrogen content (25.0 at.%) and good electrical conductivity of the NMC materials, as well as the synergistic effects of Nafion and bismuth-film contributed to the enhanced signals of the electrode during the differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV) measurements for simultaneous detection of trace Cd(II) and Pb(II) in aqueous solution. The calibration curves for Cd(II) covered two linear ranges varying from 2 to 10   μg   L −1 and 10 to 100   μg   L −1 . As for Pb(II), the linear calibration curves ranged from 0.5 to 10   μg   L −1 and 10 to 100   μg   L −1 . The detection limits were estimated to be 1.5   μg   L −1 (S/N   =   3) for Cd(II) and 0.05   μg   L −1 (S/N   =   3) for Pb(II), which were 2 times and 200 times lower than the guideline values of drinking water given by the World Health Organization (WHO), for Cd(II) and Pb(II), respectively. In addition, the good reproducibility and stability of the modified electrode offered a promising perspective for the detection of trace metal ions in practice. Compared with other porous carbon modified electrodes that obtained by either drop-casting or screen-printing method, the proposed Nafion/Bi/NMC/GCE showed a much lower detection limit for Pb(II) and a lower or comparable detection limit for Cd(II). Moreover, the obtaining of uniformly ordered N-doped carbon polyhedron could shed light on the preparation of other heteroatom-doped electrode modifying materials for the detection of heavy metal ions .

Conversion and utilization of waste biomass into sustainability treasure: Surface modified eggplant biomass by PEI and enhanced removal of Pb(II) from aqueous solutions

Yao Zhu,Jiayi Hua,Junjie Yuan,Ziyu Yuan,Yuting Dai,Tao Zhang,Fengxian Qiu

It is imperative to develop innovative methods for transforming natural biomass waste into environmentally benign and cost-effective functional adsorbents for use in the remediation of contaminated water environment. In this work, a polyethyleneimine (PEI) functionalized biomass-based adsorbent (PEI@E-Bio) with a high density of amino groups and rough and expansive surface was synthesized using waste eggplant as the raw material, exhibiting a high removal efficiency and a rapid rate of Pb(II) removal from polluted water. The maximum Pb(II) removal efficiency of 99.36 % was achieved for the optimized run with conditions of pH: 6, temperature: 20 °C, adsorption time: 90 min, PEI@E-Bio dosage: 0.2 g/L, and initial Pb(II) concentration: 10 mg/L. The pseudo-second order kinetic model provides a superior fit to the adsorption data, suggesting that the removal of Pb(II) by the PEI@E-Bio adsorbent occurs via a chemisorption process. Additionally, the influence of microstructure and surface chemistry on Pb(II) adsorption efficiency was also evaluated. The results demonstrated that the plate-like structure was the primary factor influencing the physical adsorption process. Conversely, the abundance of functional amino groups could markedly enhance the impact of chemical adsorption. The negative values of Δ H o and Δ G o demonstrate that the exothermic characteristic of the spontaneous and feasible adsorption process. The PEI@E-Bio has demonstrated robust adsorption stability and efficient regeneration performance in practical applications, highlighting its potential as a feasible, cost-efficient, and sustainable material for removing Pb(II). This research study is centered on the transformation of natural waste into biomass to effectively eliminate pollutants. It establishes a theoretical framework for environmentally conscious waste treatment, resource utilization, and the conversion of waste biomass into advanced materials.
