Surface modification of WO3 nanoparticles with Pt and Ru for VOCs sensors

Lei CHEN,Yu ZHANG,Bin SUN,Juan HE,Shuai KANG,Zhong-Qiu HUA,Chen TIAN

The production of a large number of metal oxide semiconductor materials is more for design needs, while theoretical exploration is relatively less concerned. In this work, WO 3 nanoparticles were prepared by the tungstic acid thermolysis method, and the catalysts of Pt and Ru were loaded on the surface of nanoparticles with a wet impregnation method. As expected, the sensitive responses were enhanced significantly with the additional loading of Pt, which revealed that bimetallic loading could achieve better properties with a smaller loaded amount than single metal. According to the power-law response to oxygen and H 2 -TPR results, the sensitization mechanism of noble metals loaded WO 3 to acetone as the typical VOCs was investigated. The results showed that the sensing processes were dominated by oxygen adsorption behavior and there was no difference with the loading of Ru. Furthermore, the power-law coefficient n became smaller with Pt loading. It is proposed that oxygen adsorbates on the surface become more active due to Pt. We would like to propose further a perspective, i.e., polymetallic loading that utilizes the properties of different metals to achieve synergism.

Sarcosine Biosensor Based on Pt/g-C3N4 Nanocomposites with High Electrocatalytic Activity

Junyuan Feng,Xiaohui Chen,Xinlin Shi,Weidong Zheng,Xiaofang Zhang,Haipeng Yang

Sarcosine has been shown to be a new biomarker for prostate cancer that is superior to prostate-specific antigen (PSA). By detecting the concentration of sarcosine in the human body, accurate screening and diagnosis of prostate cancer can be achieved in clinical practice. However, the sarcosine level is extremely low in human serum or urine, and accurate detection of sarcosine concentration is difficult. More work is needed to prepare sarcosine biosensors with good anti-interference performance. In this work, we prepared a sarcosine biosensor using a highly electrocatalytically active nanocomposite comprising platinum/carbon nitride (Pt/g-C3N4) as the electrode modification material. The porous lamellar graphite phase carbon nitride (g-C3N4) prevents the agglomeration of Pt nanoparticles and keeps the Pt nanoparticles in a highly dispersed state. The constructed sarcosine biosensor achieves high sensitivity and can selectively detect low concentrations of sarcosine. Its linear detection range is 2–70 μM, and the limit of detection (LOD) is 0.8 μM (S/N = 3). The prepared sarcosine biosensor shows relatively good performance in terms of resistance to interference caused by electroactive substances and provides the potential to be applied in serum for accurate detection of sarcosine.

Hydrothermal-treated Pt/Al2O3 as an excellent catalyst for toluene total oxidation

Xiao Chen,Yong Wang,Jianyu Li,Zhongheng Hu,Ying Zhou,Huayan Liu,Hanfeng Lu

The preparation of highly active supported noble metal catalysts with a low noble metal loading has always been the ultimate goal of researchers working on catalysis. Hydrothermally treated Pt/Al 2 O 3 (Pt/Al 2 O 3 -H) exhibits better catalytic activity than that (Pt/Al 2 O 3 -C) treated via the conventional calcination approach. At the high space velocity of 100,000 mL/(g∙hr), the temperature that correspond to 50% toluene conversion ( T 50 ) of Pt/Al 2 O 3 -H is 115°C lower than that of Pt/Al 2 O 3 -C, and the turnover frequency (TOF) value can reach 0.0756 sec −1 . The mechanism by which the hydrothermal approach enhances Pt/Al 2 O 3 activity has been investigated. The structure associated with the high catalytic activity of Pt nanoparticles (NPs) can be retained via hydrothermal treatment. Furthermore, the support is transformed to AlO(OH) with numerous surface hydroxyl groups, which in turn can facilitate the adsorption of toluene. And the synergistic effects of Pt NPs and AlO(OH) increases the contents of Pt in oxidation state and active oxygen, which are beneficial for toluene oxidation.

Green fabrication of Pt nanoparticles via tea-polyphenols for hydrogen peroxide detection

Hui Hu,Fengxia Wang,Xu Ding,Sarah Imhanria,Wei Wang,Ji Zhang

To address the environmental hazards associated with traditional chemicals in fabricating metal nanoparticles , greener synthetic method using plant-derived material would be a good choice. In this study, platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) were greenly fabricated by tea polyphenol (Tp) and applied in hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) detection. As-prepared Pt NPs have been characterized by a series of analysis. Physical characterizations show the presence of Pt NPs whose size are about 2.7 ± 0.5 nm and very homogeneous. The electrochemical results show that, as-obtained Pt NPs by Tp (Tp-R-Pt) exhibit good anti-interference, quite a long-term stability and high sensitivity (9.1 μA mM −1 cm −2 ), and it could detect H 2 O 2 without any additional mediator or enzyme. This work would play a positive role in the development of ‘green’ fabrication pattern of nanomaterials using natural resources.

Boosting methylcyclohexane dehydrogenation over Pt-based structured catalysts by internal electric heating

Wang Wenhan,Cui Guoqing,Yan Cunji,Wang Xuejie,Yang Yang,Xu Chunming,Jiang Guiyuan

Methylcyclohexane (MCH) serves as an ideal hydrogen carrier in hydrogen storage and transportation process. In the continuous production of hydrogen from MCH dehydrogenation, the rational design of energy-efficient catalytic way with good performance remains an enormous challenge. Herein, an internal electric heating (IEH) assisted mode was designed and proposed by the directly electrical-driven catalyst using the resistive heating effect. The Pt/Al 2 O 3 on Fe foam (Pt/Al 2 O 3 /FF) with unique three-dimensional network structure was constructed. The catalysts were studied in a comprehensive way including X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM)-mapping, in situ extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), and in situ CO-Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) measurements. It was found that the hydrogen evolution rate in IEH mode can reach up to above 2060 mmol·g −1 Pt ·min −1 , which is 2–5 times higher than that of reported Pt based catalysts under similar reaction conditions in conventional heating (CH) mode. In combination with measurements from high-resolution infrared thermometer, the equations of heat transfer rate, and reaction heat analysis results, the Pt/Al 2 O 3 /FF not only has high mass and heat transfer ability to promote catalytic performance, but also behaves as the heating component with a low thermal resistance and heat capacity offering a fast temperature response in IEH mode. In addition, the chemical adsorption and activation of MCH molecules can be efficiently facilitated by IEH mode, proved by the operando MCH-FTIR results. Therefore, the as-developed IEH mode can efficiently reduce the heat and mass transfer limitations and prominently boost the dehydrogenation performance, which has a broad application potential in hydrogen storage and other catalytic reaction processes.

Atomic decoration of Pt on Co nanoparticles for enhanced oxidative esterification performances

Xin Zhao,Ruiqi Fang,Zirong Shen,Fengliang Wang,Yingwei Li

Transition-metal catalysts with metal nanoparticles (NPs) as active sites are widely utilized in various reactions. In this work, we report the atomic decoration of Pt upon Co NPs for enhanced catalytic performances in oxidation esterification. Systematical characterizations imply the single-atom nature and homogeneous distribution of Pt throughout the formed single-atom alloy (SAA). The synergistic interactions between Pt and Co lead to significant charge redistribution and up-shifted density of states (DOS) toward the Fermi level, which are verified favorable for the adsorption and activation of substrates. The esterification performances of Pt 1 Co@C are evaluated in the transformation of 54 kinds of aromatic alcohols (5-hydromethylfurfural, furfural, and benzyl alcohols) into the corresponding mono- and diesters. Pt 1 Co@C shows not only remarkably enhanced reactivity but also reliable durability in both batch and continuous flow reactors. Mechanism investigations clearly reveal the rapid transformation of 5-hydromethylfurfural over Pt 1 Co@C through a simplified route with reduced energy barriers.

Single Atomic Pt on SrTiO3 Catalyst in Reverse Water Gas Shift Reactions

Yimeng Xing,Mengyao Ouyang,Lingling Zhang,Ming Yang,Xiaodong Wu,Rui Ran,Duan Weng,Feiyu Kang,Zhichun Si

Copper catalysts were widely developed for CO2conversion, but suffered severe sintering at temperatures higher than 300 °C. Platinum was the most active and stable metal for RWGS reactions. However, the high price and scarcity of platinum restrained its application. Downsizing the metal particles can significantly improve the atom efficiency of the precious metal but the size effect of Pt on RWGS reactions was still unclear. In the present work, the single atomic Pt on SrTiO3was prepared using an impregnation leaching method, and the catalyst showed significant activity for an RWGS reaction, achieving a CO2conversion rate of 45%, a CO selectivity of 100% and a TOF of 0.643 s−1at 500 °C. The structures of the catalysts were characterized using XRD, STEM and EXAFS. Especially, the size effect of Pt in RWGS was researched using in situ FTIR and DFT calculations. The results reveal that single Pt atoms are the most active species in RWGS via a “–COOH route” while larger Pt cluster and nanoparticles facilitate the further hydrogenation of CO. The reaction between formate and H* is the rate determination step of an RWGS reaction on a catalyst, in which the reaction barrier can be lowered from 1.54 eV on Pt clusters to 1.29 eV on a single atomic Pt.Keywords:size effect;single Pt atoms;SrTiO3;reverse water gas shift (RWGS)

Abating ammonia emission from poultry manure by Pt/TiO2 modified corn straw

Yunhong Jiao,Jie Huang,Jing Hu,Anthony J. Weatherley,Wei Liu,Chaoyu Li,Zhiling Ma,Bing Han

Poultry manure is a significant source of ammonia (NH 3 ) emissions, which not only poses detrimental impacts on human well-being and the ecological system, but also leads to economic losses in the agricultural industry. Herein, we modified corn straw (CS) with 1 wt% Pt/TiO 2 catalysts using a low-temperature partial-oxidation technology to mitigate NH 3 emissions from poultry manure. It was found that Pt/TiO 2 can enable exothermic processes to occur at lower temperatures by reducing the activation energy. Under optimal modification conditions of 220 °C, the NH 3 uptakes of modified CS samples were markedly greater compared to those of the original CS. Addition of 20–50% modified CS to poultry manure resulted in significant reductions of 54.1–98.6% in NH 3 emissions compared to the control. Mechanistic studies indicate that NH 3 adsorption on the modified CS is mainly driven by the presence of acidic and alkaline functional groups, while surface area and pore structure have a negligible effect. XPS combined with NH 3 -TPD reveals that the formation of amide and amine bonds contributes to the excellent stability of adsorbed NH 3 . H 2 -TPR, O 2 -TPD, and d -band theory suggest that strong metal-support interactions between Pt and TiO 2 could be particularly crucial in catalyzing CS modification. This study proposes an environmentally sustainable and economically viable solution for abating NH 3 emissions from poultry manure, thereby addressing crucial environmental and economic concerns in the agricultural sector.

Preparation of Pt/CNT catalyst with high dispersion structure via plasma jet

Li Shaolong,Liang Yuchen,Chang Qiang,Gao Fanchuan,Wang Yixuan,Wu Jingyu,Zhang Ye,Guo Ruiyu,Guo Jiaru

A plasma jet (a high temperature jet formed by blowing a free arc through high pressure air) method based on free arc was carried out to disperse carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in gas phase while generating Pt nanoparticles (Pt-NPs) on them at the same time. The plasma jet is generated through the discharge between the cathode composed of CNTs, PtCl 4 and DI water and the anode with a hole. Plasma jet prepares the Pt/CNT catalyst by directly spraying. The CNT carrier in the catalyst have good dispersion by SEM images. The mean size of Pt-NPs estimated by TEM images is 3.41 nm with the plasma jet method and about 4.77 nm with the commercial Pt/C respectively. It was showed that the bulk of Pt-NPs produced by plasma jet is in metal state in the analysis of XPS measurements. Compared with Pt/C, Pt/CNT have roughly equal catalytic activity and higher durability by cyclic voltammetry measurements. Based on these properties, the plasma injection method solves the problems of carrier dispersion and metal particle preparation at the same time, which greatly simplifies the catalyst preparation process.

Mechanochemical Synthesis of Pt/Nb2CTx MXene Composites for Enhanced Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Xiaoyuan Fan,Peng Du,Xiaoxuan Ma,Ruyue Wang,Jingteng Ma,Yonggang Wang,Dongyu Fan,Yuanzheng Long,Bohan Deng,Kai Huang,Hui Wu

Production of hydrogen from water splitting has been considered as a promising solution for energy conversion and storage. Since a noble metal-based structure is still the most satisfactory but scarce kind of catalyst, it is significant to allow for practical application of such catalysts by engineering the heterogeneous structure and developing green and facile synthetic strategies. Herein, we report a mechanochemical ball milling synthesis of platinum nanoclusters immobilized on a 2D transition metal carbide MXene (Nb2CTx) as an enhanced catalyst for hydrogen evolution. After annealing at 600 °C, ultrafine Pt3Nb nanoclusters are formed on the Pt/Nb2CTxcatalyst. As prepared, the Pt/Nb2CTx-600 catalyst demonstrates superior electrochemical HER activity and stability with an ultralow overpotential of 5 mV and 46 mV to achieve 10 mA cm−2and 100 mA cm−2, respectively, in comparison with other Nb2CTx-based catalysts and commercial Pt/C catalysts. Moreover, the remarkable durability is also confirmed by accelerated durability tests (ADTs) and long-term chronoamperometry (CA) tests. The excellent HER performance was attributed to high Pt dispersion and more active site exposure by the mechanochemical process and thermal treatment. Such results suggest that the mechanochemical strategy provides a novel approach for rational design and cost-effective production of electrocatalysts, also providing other potential applications in a wide range of areas. Keywords:hydrogen evolution;Pt-Nb alloy;mechanochemical synthesis;thermal annealing

A trace ppb-level electrochemical H2S sensor based on ultrathin Pt nanotubes

Peng Zuo,Ruixin Wang,Fenghua Li,Fengxia Wu,Guobao Xu,Wenxin Niu

An amperometric sensor has been developed with high sensitivity for real-time measurement of H 2 S gas at room temperature (25 °C ± 2 °C). In order to enhance the utilization of platinum and improve its catalytic performance, an ultrathin and one-dimensional (1D) Pt nanotubes (Pt NTs, ~3.5 nm in wall thickness) were designed and used as sensing electrode materials . Different concentrations of H 2 S gas were tested to evaluate the sensitivity of the sensor and to obtain the relationship between the electricity response signal and H 2 S gas concentration. At room temperature, the sensor based on Pt NTs shows better sensing performance than that based on Pt nanoparticles , which is mainly attributed to two factors, namely, the inherent characteristic of the hollow 1D Pt NTs. The Pt NTs-based sensor shows a detection limit as low as 0.025 ppb, which are the lowest among H 2 S gas sensors reported in the literatures. The response and recovery times are 0.75 s and 0.86 s for 0.8 ppb H 2 S, respectively. In addition, the sensor shows a wide range (100 ppm-0.025 ppb), high selectivity compared to other gases (including CO, NH 3 , CH 2 O, NO and NO 2 ), good reproducibility, and satisfactory long-term stability. Thus, the ultrathin Pt NTs-based gas sensor would be a great potential to the real-time and online monitoring of the trace ppb-level H 2 S gas at room temperature.

Surface sites assembled-strategy on Pt–Ru nanowires for accelerated methanol oxidation

Mingxuan Li,Yao Wang,Jing Cai,Yunrui Li,Yujie Liu,Yin Dong,Shuna Li,Xiaolin Yuan,Xin Zhang,Xiaoping Dai

Modifying the surface active sites of Pt-based catalysts at the atomic level is of great significance to enhance the electrooxidation of methanol molecules. Herein, efficient active site assembly strategies are proposed, precisely, aimed at building high-performance electrocatalysts. Serving as proof-of-concept examples, both instances of Pt nanowires surface doping isolated Ru atoms (Ru/Pt NWs) and Ru nanoparticles supported on Pt nanowires (Ru@Pt NWs) are specially designed to optimize the catalytic performance of methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). The specific activity and mass activity of optimal Ru/Pt NWs can reach up to 3.93 mA cm−2 and 568.40 mA mg−1Pt, respectively, which is 1.53/1.94 times that of the Ru@Pt NWs and 2.03/2.59 times that of pure Pt NWs. Detailed studies on mechanism reveal that the Pt–Ru alloy can significantly improve the electron transfer kinetics of MOR, and activate more Pt atoms involved in the Langmuir–Hinshelwood (L–H) pathway compared with Ru@Pt NWs, all of which collectively accelerate the methanol oxidation. This surface engineering strategy via assembling active sites can reveal a promising method in the design of advanced Pt-based catalysts for direct methanol fuel cells.
