Ru/N-Mo 2 C MXene was assembled by hydrothermal and impregnation reduction process. • The introduction of Ru/N-Mo 2 C MXene accelerates the hydrolysis rate of ammonia borane. • Ru/N-Mo 2 C MXene exhibits a high TOF value of 1092 mol H2 ∙mol Ru −1 ∙min −1 . • Dual active sites of Ru and N-Mo 2 C MXene promotes the hydrogen production for NH 3 BH 3 . Ammonia borane (NH 3 BH 3 , AB) is an ideal hydrogen storage medium, but its intrinsic physicochemical properties require efficient catalysts for rapid hydrolytic dehydrogenation at room temperature. Herein, the Ru nanoparticles anchored nitrogen-doped Mo 2 C MXene (Ru/N-Mo 2 C MXene) catalyst was successfully synthesized via a hydrothermal method combined with an impregnation-reduction strategy, using urea as the nitrogen source. When the mass ratio of Mo 2 C MXene to urea was 1:6, the Ru/N-Mo 2 C MXene catalyst exhibited optimal performance. At 298 K, the turnover frequency value of Ru/N-Mo 2 C MXene was 1092 mol H2 ∙mol Ru −1 ∙min −1 , with an activation energy of 51.74 kJ∙mol −1 , and the catalytic activity remained 86.2% after five cycles. Mechanism analysis indicates that the superior hydrogen production performance of AB is attributed to both the generation of 1.59 nm Ru nanoparticles and the modulated local electronic structure induced by N doping originating from Ru/N-Mo 2 C MXene. These features facilitate the generation of dual active sites (electron-rich Ru and electron-deficient N-Mo 2 C MXene), which efficiently promote the cleavage of B H in AB and O H in H 2 O, thereby significantly boosting the catalytic activity of Ru/N-Mo 2 C MXene for AB hydrogen production. This work establishes a feasible strategy for designing high-efficiency catalysts for ammonia borane hydrolysis.

Photocatalytic CO2 reduction using H2O as the sole electron and proton source represents the ultimate challenge in artificial photosynthesis, yet it is severely hindered by the sluggish kinetics of CO2 adsorption and activation processes. Herein, we report a rationally designed photocatalyst comprising Ru-decorated In2O3 nanorods enriched with surface hydroxyl groups and oxygen vacancies (In2O3−x(OH)y), which drives the conversion of CO2 and H2O into CO and CH4 without sacrificial agents. Atomic-level structural design creates surface frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) through the synergy between coordinately unsaturated In sites (Lewis acids) and adjacent In−OH groups (Lewis bases). These FLP sites drastically enhance CO2 adsorption and facilitate its polarization and activation. Meanwhile, Ru nanoparticles not only facilitate electron extraction from the In2O3−x(OH)y nanorods but also function as “nanoheaters” that rapidly raise the local temperature to accelerate water vaporization. The synergistic cooperation between FLPs and Ru cocatalysts fosters balanced and efficient redox kinetics. Consequently, the optimized photocatalyst achieves markedly enhanced CO and CH4 production rates that are 40 and 31 times higher than those of pristine In2O3, respectively, while achieving stoichiometric O2 evolution. This work underscores the pivotal role of surface FLPs and provides a fundamental principle for constructing efficient sacrificial-agent-free photocatalytic systems.

The catalytic hydrogenolysis of glucose to produce 1,2-propylene glycol (1,2-PG) has opened promising avenues for sustainable chemical production. However, traditional Ru-based catalysts suffer from issues such as high metal loading, poor dispersion, and a tendency to agglomerate under harsh conditions, leading to rapid deactivation. This work reports a highly dispersed, low-loading Ru catalyst supported on a magnesium–aluminum ferrite (MAFO) spinel to address these limitations. Strong covalent metal–support interactions (CMSI) between Ru species and the MAFO support not only achieve efficient stabilization of Ru nanoparticles but also promote their redispersion. Under optimized reaction conditions (518 K, 5 MPa H 2 , and 1 h), the Ru/MAFO catalyst achieves 100% glucose conversion and 59.3% selectivity to 1,2-PG. Notably, the catalyst maintains outstanding activity and stability after six consecutive reaction cycles. This study provides an efficient and robust catalytic strategy for 1,2-PG production from glucose, offering significant insights for designing high-performance and stable catalysts for biomass valorization.

Developing efficient, stable and CO-tolerant electrocatalysts for alkaline hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) is vital for hydrogen fuel cells. Herein, we report a phytic acid-modified polyaniline-derived N, P-codoped porous carbon supported ruthenium catalyst (Ru/PA-Ani) for alkaline HOR. The catalyst exhibits an outstanding anodic current density of 8.97 mA cm −2 at 50 mV overpotential over 10 times higher than Ru/Ani and much better than commercial Pt/C. Mechanistic study suggested that the phosphate groups of Ru/PA-Ani catalyst establish a stable complexation system with polyaniline, and the molecular orbital distribution features of its HOMO and LUMO afford molecular-level support for the valence state modulation of Ru 3+ Meanwhile, N, P co-doping optimizes active site dispersion and electronic structure, promoting OH* generation and charge transport. This work provides an effective strategy for high-performance HOR catalysts and guides the design of low cost, stable anode catalysts for alkaline fuel cells.

The synthesis of high performance catalysts for the catalytic wet oxidation (CWO) of N-methyldiethanolamine (MDEA) in water remains a challenge, and is a topic of considerable importance in relation to sustainability. In this paper, a Ru-CNx/CeO2catalyst was synthesized through a modified impregnation process for the CWO of MDEA, exhibiting a high activity of 80% COD removal at 180 °C and 2.5 MPa. EPR, Raman, and XPS characterizations revealed that the CNxspecies facilitated the reduction in Ru4+to Ru0species and enhanced the Ru–Ce interaction to form a high-density Ru-O-Ce structure with Ce3+sites, which strongly correlate to the generation of oxygen vacancies. The oxygen vacancies enabled the adsorption and activation of the oxygen, generating active species (h+, ·O2−, and ·OH) that effectively oxidized the MDEA during the catalytic reaction.

Ruthenium has regards as a potential electrocatalyst candidate towards hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) to substitute platinum and its surface property regulation is vital for increasing catalytic activity to realize the wide industrialization. Herein, we report a simple and facile method to regulate the metallic surface of Ru nanoparticles through high temperature calcination without particle overgrowth. The nanopores in Ketjenblack EC-600JD are employed as nanoreactors with Ru precursor ultrasonicated and impregnated and the subsize Ru nanoparticles embedded in porous carbon with highly metallic surface are obtained by high temperature annealing. The as-prepared Ru@KB-900 electrocatalyst shows excellent catalytic activity for HER with the overpotentials reached 9.9 mV and 28 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 and the mass activities of 7404 A g Ru −1 and 478 A g Ru −1 at the overpotential of 50 mV, in acidic and alkaline electrolytes, respectively, which outperformed that of commercial Pt/C catalyst in the corresponding conditions. Furthermore, it also delivers a very good life-span performance at the overpotential of 50 mV over 48 h. The high HER activity is ascribed to the highly metallic surface of active site tuned by calcination temperature and the efficient exposure of active sites for the ultrasmall particle size. This study provides a simple and effective method for designing highly active sites with efficient exposure.

The ionic materials consisting of cationic Ru complexes and Wells-Dawson polyoxometalate anion (POM, K 6 P 2 W 18 O 62 ) have been constructed via a non-covalent interaction. The as-synthesized catalysts have been characterized thoroughly by NMR, XRD, FESEM, and FT-IR, etc. The characterization suggested that a hydrogen bond interaction occurred between the proton of the amine ligand in the cationic Ru complexes and the oxygen atom of the POM anion. The hydrogen bond played an important role in enhancing catalytic activity for the transfer hydrogenation of methyl levulinate (ML) to γ-valerolactone (GVL) under very mild conditions. Especially, the transfer hydrogenation reaction proceeded via a heterogeneous catalysis approach and the heterogenized catalysts even afforded much better catalytic performance than homogeneous analogs. Notably, the catalysts can be recycled without an obvious loss of activity, and further extended to highly selective transfer hydrogenation of α,β-unsaturated ketones and aldehydes, etc. into the corresponding α,β-unsaturated alcohols without any base external additives. The high catalytic performance of these anchored catalysts was highly related to the hydrogen bond interaction and the basicity of the polyanion. The obtained knowledge from this work could lead us to a new catalysis concept of tethering active homogeneous complexes for constructing highly active anchored Ru complex catalysts for hydrogenation reaction.

Improving the intrinsic catalytic activity of NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH), which is a benchmark electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), is a significant challenge. In the present study, we doped ruthenium ions into NiFe LDH (Ru-NiFe LDH) to accelerate the OER kinetics. Electrochemical measurements of NiFe LDH and Ru-NiFe LDH at similar mass loadings showed that Ru-NiFe LDH demonstrated a higher OER activity than that of NiFe LDH. Ru-NiFe LDH only requires an overpotential of 246 mV at 10 mA cm−2 in alkaline media. This attributes to ruthenium doping primarily, which can promote the catalytic activity of Fe sites and boost the electronic interaction among the Ni, Fe, and Ru metals according to the theoretical calculations. Ru-NiFe LDH is stable during OER stability measurements, which was confirmed by structure and elemental analysis. These findings will provide a useful approach for promoting the intrinsic activity of multi-metallic (oxy) hydroxide electrocatalysts toward the OER.

The extraction and separation of platinum group metals (PGMs) from HLLW is of great value for resource recycling and the running of reprocessing plants. In this paper, the photochemical method was proposed to extract and separate PGMs (Pd, Ru) from simulated high level liquid wastes (HLLW). Pd and Ru metal were extracted from aqueous solution by photoreduction with high efficiency (reduction ratio >90%) in the presence of alcohols, which was confirmed by UV–vis spectroscopy, XRD, XPS and TEM analysis. The effects of various parameters such as exposure wavelength, reducing agents, Cl − and pH value were investigated to optimize the photoreaction. The highly efficient extraction and separation of Pd or/and Ru metal from their mixture with lanthanide (Nd) by selective photoreduction was realized. The results suggest that the photochemical method is a promising method for the efficient extraction and separation of PGMs from HLLW.

The environmental hazards posed by bisphenol A (BPA) have become a critical global concern. Consequently, the development of rapid, user-friendly, and highly sensitive methods for BPA detection is essential for pollution control and health risk assessment. In this study, a novel electrochemiluminescent (ECL) sensor was designed using Ru(bpy) 3 2+ -encapsulated Zn-based metal–organic frameworks (Ru-ZnMOF) integrated with gold nanoparticles (Au@Ru-ZnMOF) as efficient ECL probes. Notably, BPA caused a significant quenching effect on the ECL signal of Au@Ru-ZnMOF in the presence of tripropylamine (TPA) as a coreactant. Under optimized experimental conditions, a glassy carbon electrode modified with Au@Ru-ZnMOF (glassy carbon electrode (GCE/Au@Ru-ZnMOF) demonstrated exceptional ECL performance for BPA detection, with a broad linear detection range (1.0 × 10 −9 to 5.0 × 10 −4 mol·L −1 ) and an ultra-low detection limit of 2.5 × 10 −11 mol·L −1 . The proposed sensor was successfully applied for the quantification of BPA in thermal paper samples, achieving recovery rates between 95.8 % and 98.5 %, confirming its high accuracy and reliability.

Development of active and cost-effective electrocatalysts to substitute platinum-based catalysts in alkaline hydrogen evolution reactions (HERs) remains a challenge. The synergistic effect between different elements in alloy catalysts can regulate electronic structure and thereby provide an abundance of catalytic sites for reactions. Thus, alloy catalysts are suitable candidates for future energy applications. Conventional methods for enhancing the performance of alloy catalysts have mainly focused on element composition and thus have often neglected to examine catalyst design. In this paper, a ruthenium–manganese–niobium alloy catalyst (Ru 62 Mn12Nb 21 O 5 ) is reported with a supra-nanocrystalline dual-phase structure that is fabricated through combinatorial magnetron co-sputtering at ambient temperatures. The induced crystal–crystal heterostructure of Ru 62 Mn 12 Nb 21 O 5 reduced system energy, thereby achieving balance between stability and catalytic activity. Ru 62 Mn 12 Nb 21 O 5 exhibited excellent HER performance, as demonstrated by low HER overpotential (18 mV at 10 mA cm −2 ) and robust stability (300 h at 1.2 A cm −2 ). Moreover, oxygen-rich interfaces in Ru 62 Mn 12 Nb 21 O 5 enhanced charge transfer and the kinetics of water dissociation as well as optimized hydrogen adsorption/desorption processes, thus boosting HER performance. The crystal–crystal heterostructure and oxygen-rich interfaces in Ru 62 Mn 12 Nb 21 O 5 are induced by its dual-phase nanocrystalline structure, which represents a new structural design for enhancing the performance of catalysts for sustainable energy development.

Modifying the catalyst's electronic structure is essential for improving the hydrazine oxidation reaction (HzOR) and alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), but it is still very difficult. We have developed a new heterostructured electrocatalyst in this work using Ru nanosheets and NiCo layered double hydroxides (LDH). In-situ Raman and theoretical studies show that the heterostructure of Ru/NiCo LDH lowers absorption of hydrogen's Gibbs free energy and the d-band center of Ru/NiCo LDH (from −1.7250 to −1.3341 eV), causing the directed development of interfacial H 2 O (ΔG H* , from 1.65 to 0.23 eV). With an overpotential of 19 and 75 mV to achieve 10 and 100 mA cm −2 for HER, these beneficial characteristics provide the Ru/NiCo LDH with exceptional electrocatalytic capabilities. For HzOR, 10 and 100 mA cm −2 may be produced using just −118 and−112 mV, respectively. The Ru/NiCo LDH electrolyzer also only needs 22 and 223 mV to produce 10 and 100 mA cm −2 , respectively. This work lays the groundwork for developing bifunctional catalysts for the green hydrogen industry.
