Carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) and sodium alginate (SA), which are excellent polysaccharide-based hemostatic agents, are capable of forming polyelectrolyte complexes (PEC) through electrostatic interactions. However, CMCS/SA PEC sponges prepared by the conventional sol-gel process exhibited slow liquid absorption rate and poor mechanical properties post-swelling. In this work, a novel strategy involving freeze casting followed by acetic acid vapor treatment to induce electrostatic interactions was developed to fabricate novel PEC sponges with varying CMCS/SA mass ratios. Compared to sol-gel process sponge, the novel sponge exhibited a higher density of electrostatic interactions, resulting in denser pore walls that resist re-gelation and swelling according to FTIR, XRD, and SEM analyses. Additionally, the liquid absorption kinetics, as well as compression and tension tests, demonstrated that the novel sponge had significantly improved rapid blood absorption capacity and mechanical properties. Furthermore, in vitro coagulation and drug release studies showed that the novel sponge had a lower blood clotting index and clotting time, along with a slower drug release rate after loading with berberine hydrochloride, showcasing its potential as a rapid hemostatic dressing with controlled drug release capabilities.

Microspheres are micrometer-sized particles that can load and gradually release drugs via physical encapsulation or adsorption onto the surface and within polymers. In the field of biomedicine, hydrogel microspheres have been extensively studied for their application as drug carriers owing to their ability to reduce the frequency of drug administration, minimize side effects, and improve patient compliance. Sodium alginate (ALG) is a naturally occurring linear polysaccharide with three backbone glycosidic linkages. There are two auxiliary hydroxyl groups present in each of the moieties of the polymer, which have the characteristics of an alcohol hydroxyl moiety. The synthetic ALG units can undergo chemical cross-linking reactions with metal ions, forming a cross-linked network structure of polymer stacks, ultimately forming a hydrogel. Hydrogel microspheres can be prepared using a simple process involving the ionic cross-linking properties of ALG. In this study, we prepared ALG-based hydrogel microspheres (ALGMS) using a microfluidic electrodeposition strategy. The prepared hydrogel microspheres were uniformly sized and well-dispersed, owing to accurate control of the microfluidic electrospray flow. ALGMS cross-linked with different metal ions were prepared using a microfluidic electrospray technique combining microfluidic and high electric field, and its antimicrobial properties, slow drug release ability, and biocompatibility were investigated. This technology holds promise for application in advanced drug development and production.

Infected wounds produce pus and heal slowly. To address this issue, we developed a rapid-setting SP/SA@BP-C hydrogel by combining sodium alginate (SA) and soy protein (SP) with black phosphorus (BP) grafted with clarithromycin (Cla) and incorporating Ca 2+ for chelation. This hydrogel dressing exhibits excellent photothermal (PT) and photodynamic (PD) bacteriostatic effects without biotoxicity, making it suitable for treating infected wounds. Characterization confirmed its successful fabrication, and the bacteriostatic effect demonstrated over 99 % efficacy through the synergistic effects of PT, PD, and Cla. Cellular studies indicated nontoxicity and a promoting effect on cell proliferation (121.6 %). In the mouse-infected wound model, the hydrogel led to complete healing in 12 days, with good recovery of the skin's superficial dermal layer and appendages. Consequently, SP/SA@BP-C is a natural hydrogel dressing with promising properties.

In this paper, a hydrogel material with efficient antibacterial, hemostatic, self-healing, and injectable properties was designed for the treatment of diabetic wounds. Firstly, quaternary ammonium salts were grafted with oxidized sodium alginate, and quaternized oxidized sodium alginate (QOSA) was synthesized. Due to the introduction of quaternary ammonium group it has antibacterial and hemostatic effects, at the same time, due to the presence of aldehyde group it can be reacted with carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) to form a hydrogel through the Schiff base reaction. Furthermore, deer antler blood polypeptide (DABP) was loaded into the hydrogel (QOSA&CMCS&DABP), showing good swelling ratio and bacteriostatic effect. In vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrated that the hydrogel not only quickly inhibited hepatic hemorrhage in mice and reduced coagulation index and clotting time in vitro, but also significantly enhanced collagen deposition at the wound site, accelerating wound healing . This demonstrates that the multifunctional hydrogel materials (QOSA&CMCS&DABP) have promising applications in the acceleration of skin wound healing and antibacterial promotion.

Industrial wastewater containing heavy metal ions has become an urgent problem to be solved due to its environmental persistence and bioaccumulation. In this study, powdered adsorbent (DE/CBC) and spherical adsorbent (SA@DE/CBC) were prepared from natural diatomite (DE), crab shell biochar (CBC) and sodium alginate (SA) as raw materials, and were used to adsorb Pb(II) from wastewater. The adsorption isotherm fitting showed that the experimental process of DE/CBC and SA@DE/CBC conformed to the Langmuir model, and the maximum adsorption capacity of the monolayer reached 1155 mg/g and 365 mg/g, respectively. The pseudo-first-order kinetic model showed better fitting for the two adsorbents, and the diffusion rate was controlled by multiple steps. Compared with most traditional composite adsorbents, DE/CBC and SA@DE/CBC can achieve 98 % and 93 % adsorption rates at relatively high Pb(II) concentrations, and maintain 83 % and 84 % high adsorption capacity after 10 adsorption–desorption cycles, demonstrating superior Pb(II) adsorption performance and excellent structural stability. The spherical morphology not only effectively solves the problems of adsorbent recovery and secondary pollution prevention and control, but also plays a role in protecting the structure and active sites of powdery materials, making it more durable and practical. Collectively, the developed composite not only enables high-value-added utilization of biowaste but also demonstrates cost-effectiveness and excellent reusability, providing a sustainable remediation strategy for lead-contaminated water systems.

Dye wastewater presents a growing threat to both the natural environment and human health, necessitating the development of efficient, cost-effective, and eco-friendly flocculants for its treatment. In response to this challenge, this study successfully prepared a carboxymethyl cellulose-acrylamide-sodium alginate (CAS) anionic terpolymer via a microwave-assisted copolymerization method. Through the flocculation performance towards a simulated dye wastewater containing 100 mg/L of the cationic dye crystal violet, the optimal synthesis process was determined. Results indicated that the optimal CAS concentration of 30 mg/L achieved a removal rate of up to 93.7% for the dye solution of 100 mg/L. The flocculation mechanism of the CAS polymer is primarily based on charge neutralization, with additional effects from bridging and net trapping. This mechanism allows for excellent flocculation performance across wide ranges of dye concentration, pH, and ambient temperature. Furthermore, the cost of CAS is nearly equivalent to that of commercially available polyacrylamide, yet it offers a significant reduction in operating costs, accounting for only one-fifth of the cost required for polyacrylamide to remove the same amount of dye. The prepared CAS copolymer offers the advantages of abundant sourcing, low cost, eco-friendliness, and high performance, making it a highly competitive candidate for practical wastewater treatment.

Atmospheric Water Harvesting (AWH) is considered a promising approach aimed at addressing global water scarcity by extracting water from the air, which is particularly suitable for arid and water scarce regions. Here, we report an ultrahygroscopic polymer hydrogel bead (SC-LiCl/PNIPAM, SCLP) composed of renewable biomasses, hygroscopic salt, and temperature sensitive materials to extract water vapor from arid climates. Sodium alginate and carboxymethyl cellulose endow a 3D porous structure with enlarged polymer–air interfaces, enabling efficient water capture and vapor transport. Thermoresponsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) can achieve phase transition under daylight conditions to assist the release water collected by hydrogels via hydrophobic interactions. Impressively, SCLP hydrogel beads display a maximum water uptake of up to 9.93 g/g–1 at a relative humidity of 90% and also demonstrate excellent water absorption and release properties in natural conditions. By virtue of plant cultivation experiments and 16S rRNA (16S rRNA), the introduction of SCLP hydrogel beads can effectively capture water from the atmosphere to alter the distribution of dominant populations of soil communities and enhance the activity of defensive enzymes, thereby alleviating the wide impact of drought stress on plant growth. This work provides a feasible prospect for large-scale manufacturing of hygroscopic hydrogels and the ecological restoration of barren slope areas.

Designing a material that can serve as both a submucosal injectable material (SIM) and a wound treatment agent is highly desirable for achieving optimal outcomes in endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), yet it remains a significant challenge. In this study, a series of injectable multifunctional microparticles were developed as SIMs to achieve rapid hemostasis and wound repair after ESD. To enhance the biofunctional properties of these microparticles, sodium alginate (SA) was modified through serotonin and cysteine grafting. Following crosslinking with ferric ions, three types of microparticles (SA/cOSAFe, SA/OSASFe, and SA/cOSASFe) were synthesized. The particle size distribution, adhesion performance, and hemostatic and antibacterial properties were systematically evaluated. Results demonstrated that all these microparticles outperformed normal saline, achieving mucosal uplifting heights exceeding 10 mm and maintenance times over 20 min. Furthermore, the serotonin-containing SA/OSAS Fe and SA/cOSAS Fe microparticles exhibited superior photothermal antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli , along with strong antioxidant activity against DPPH and ABTS radicals, reaching over 85 %, and better hemostatic performance compared with clinical gauze. Notably, SA/OSAS Fe under NIR irradiation significantly facilitated infected-wound regeneration by reducing inflammation, increasing blood vessel formation, and promoting denser collagen fiber deposition, highlighting their great potential for rapid hemostasis and wound repair following ESD.

Multi-heteroatom co-doped carbon aerogels featuring abundant micro/mesoporous structures are highly used as electrode materials for supercapacitors, showing excellent specific capacitance and cycle stability. In this study, the hierarchical porous carbon aerogel (BHPC-4) co-doped with heteroatoms containing nitrogen (3.23 atom%), oxygen (12.17 atom%), boron (10.09 atom%) and sulfur (0.74 atom%) was prepared with sodium lignosulfonate and sodium alginate as carbon precursors and ammonium pentaborate as boron source and activator. The material demonstrates an impressive specific capacitance of 381.0 F·g −1 at 1 A·g −1 in a three-electrode system with an electrolyte of 6 M KOH. In a symmetric supercapacitor, it has a high capacitance retention rate of 95.9 % and a coulomb efficiency of 97.2 % after 10,000 cycles at 5 A·g −1 . Remarkably, the symmetric supercapacitor achieves an energy of 15.1 Wh·kg −1 at 72.0 W·kg −1 . The study presents a novel approach to efficient use of renewable biomass to produce nitrogen, oxygen, boron and sulfur multi-heteroatom doped carbon aerogels for supercapacitors.

This study investigates the clinical challenges associated with conventional catheters, particularly bacterial adhesion and catheter-associated infections (CAI), which are exacerbated by surface hydrophobicity. To address these issues, a functional modification strategy for thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) catheters was developed, leveraging the complexation between sodium alginate (SA) and the cationic antimicrobial agent poly (hexamethylene biguanide) hydrochloride (PHMB) to construct a dual-functional composite coating system with combined hydrophilicity and antibacterial properties. A hydrophilic coating was first formed on the TPU surface using 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (KH-560) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), significantly reducing surface hydrophobicity. Simultaneously, the anionic properties of SA were utilized to complex cationic antimicrobial agents, forming a long-lasting antibacterial functional layer. The modified catheter exhibited a reduction in the coefficient of friction from 1.3 to 0.03, corresponding to a 53 % improvement in lubricity. Compared to unmodified catheters, the coating introduction showed no significant impact on maximum tensile force or hardness, but slightly reduced the bending modulus, enhancing adaptability in vascular environments. Zone of inhibition assay confirmed the strong antimicrobial efficacy of the hydrophilic-antibacterial coating against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ). Additionally, cytocompatibility and hemocompatibility verified the biosafety of the modified catheters. By optimizing the composite coating modification, this study successfully achieved efficient synergy between hydrophilicity and antibacterial properties in TPU catheters, providing an innovative solution to reduce the risk of CAI.

Novel composite hydrogels composed of Capparis spinosa L. extract (CSL) and sodium alginate (SA) were developed for biomedical applications using calcium chloride (CaCl₂) as a nontoxic ionic crosslinker. The swelling degree, antioxidant activity, water retention, and biocompatibility of the CSL/SA composite hydrogels were thoroughly analyzed, along with their antibacterial properties. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results indicated that the CSL/SA composite hydrogels exhibited a three-dimensional porous structure with uniform pore distribution. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) results suggested that CSL was successfully incorporated into composite hydrogels. When the CSL concentration reached 9 %, the swelling degree attained 765.89 ± 21.36 %. Furthermore, the addition of CSL enhanced the oxidation resistance of the composite hydrogels. Agar disk diffusion assessments confirmed that the CSL/SA composite hydrogels exhibited significant antibacterial effects against E. coli and S. aureus. Cytotoxicity studies demonstrated that the composite hydrogels effectively accelerated cell proliferation. Therefore, these hydrogels show promising potential for application as wound dressings.

Graphical Sodium alginate/cellulose nanofiber/polyacrylamide (SA/CNF/PAM) composite hydrogel microspheres are prepared by grafting PAM onto porous SA/CNF microspheres. These microspheres demonstrate exceptional adsorption capacity for heavy metal ions, outstanding salt tolerance, and reusability, providing a highly effective and sustainable solution for wastewater treatment. Water contamination derived from heavy metal ions has caused serious harm to water ecosystem and human health. Hence, it is crucial to exploit a material that can effectively remove heavy metal ions from wastewater to solve this problem. Herein, sodium alginate/cellulose nanofiber/polyacrylamide (SA/CNF/PAM) composite hydrogel microspheres for heavy-metal adsorption were prepared by grafting PAM onto the porous SA/CNF hydrogel microspheres, which was produced by integrating sodium alginate with cellulose nanofibers utilizing microfluidic method. The adsorption performances of the original SA/CNF microspheres were enhanced with the introduction of PAM. Various factors influencing adsorption processes, including pH, temperature, co-existing ion, salinity, etc. were systematically explored. The results showed the adsorption course for Pb 2+ was the most consistent with the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models, forecasting a predominantly chemical adsorption mechanism. At 20 °C, the adsorption capacity of Pb 2 ⁺ using the Langmuir model was up to an unprecedented 676.97 mg/g. In summary, an extremely utility adsorption technology derived from hydrogel adsorbents has been gestated, offering an effective solution for the removal of heavy metal ions from real-world wastewater.
