High-Efficiency Air Filter Media with a Three-Dimensional Network Composed of Core–Shell Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8@Tunicate Nanocellulose for PM0.3 Removal

Zhongyuan Huang,Chao Dang,Zhaoxia Sun,Haisong Qi

Particulate matter (PM) in air has seriously endangered human health. Especially, PM0.3 can easily enter the lungs and blood through breathing. Herein, an air filter with a three-dimensional (3D) network consisting of core–shell structured fibers was designed by in situ growth of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 on tunicate nanocellulose/glass fiber composite filter media (ZIF-8@TNC/GF). The filtration performance of the obtained ZIF-8@TNC/GF membranes against sodium chloride particles with the MPPS (most penetrating particle size) was investigated. The air filter media at the optimal ratio of ZIF-8 exhibited an ultrahigh efficiency of 99.998% and a quality factor of 0.0308 Pa–1 for PM0.3. Further characterizations showed that the ZIF-8@TNC/GF air filter had a hierarchical and rich pore structure, showing a large specific surface area (50.3 m2 g–1). More significantly, compared with the TNC/GF prepared by the dipping method, TNCs changed from the original two-dimensional (2D) nonuniform network to a uniform 3D network after the ZIF-8 was introduced. Moreover, the ZIF-8@TNC fibers with a core–shell structure inhibited the aggregation of nanocellulose. This study will shed light on the fabrication of high-efficiency TNC composite air filter media with fluffy 3D networks.

Bio-inspired water resistant and fast multi-responsive Janus actuator assembled by cellulose nanopaper and graphene with lignin adhesion

Xinpeng Che,Meiyan Wu,Guang Yu,Chao Liu,Huanfei Xu,Bin Li,Chaoxu Li

Flexible actuators with responses to various environmental stimuli have attracted great attention, but the issues of weak layer-to-layer bonding and low water resistance of cellulose-based actuators severely restrict their practical application. Herein, inspired by the internal structure of lignocellulose and reversible opening movement of pine cones by external humidity stimuli, a novel Janus film consisting of the insulated lignin-containing cellulose nanopaper (CNP) layer and the conductive reduced graphene oxide (rGO) layer was delicately designed and well fabricated through lignin adhesion between the two layers. Characterization showed that the obtained Janus film with a tensile strength of 141 MPa could be used as a flexible actuator, which could be operated based on water absorption and dehydration of the CNP layer as well as the light-to-heat conversion and high conductivity of rGO layer. Thus, the as-fabricated Janus film with excellent durability (folding resistance (>1000 times), good wet stability, and durable electrical actuation (>500 cycles)) had quick multi-responses to humidity, near-infrared radiation and electrical stimulation. Particularly, the resultant Janus film had the fastest response speed (1.875°/s/V) under the electrical stimuli compared to the reported carbon/polymer-based flexible actuators with comparable weights. Therefore, this CNP-based Janus film can be potentially used in many fields such as humidity sensor, bionic artificial arm/driving motor, and it could be helpful to develop facile and environmentally friendly strategies for the construction of multi-responsive Janus actuator/intelligent devices.

Bimetal-modified g-C3N4 photocatalyst for promoting hydrogen production coupled with selective oxidation of biomass derivative

Qing Yang,Ting Wang,Fang Han,Ziqiang Zheng,Bing Xing,Benxia Li

The solar-driven coproduction of hydrogen (H 2 ) fuel and value-added chemicals from biomass derivatives represents a promising strategy to address the energy and environment issues. Herein, the Ni-Au bimetal modified g-C 3 N 4 photocatalyst was synthesized by a step-by-step photodeposition method and used to promote the photocatalytic coproduction of H 2 and furfural from furfural-alcohol aqueous solution. In the designed Ni-Au/g-C 3 N 4 photocatalyst, g-C 3 N 4 was the main light-harvesting material for generating electron-hole pairs which were separated efficiently by metal/g-C 3 N 4 interface, plasmonic Au nanoparticles further increased the light utilization efficiency, and Ni acted as both electron trap and the active sites for H 2 evolution. Beneficial from the synergy of three components, the Ni-Au/g-C 3 N 4 photocatalyst exhibited 3-folds activity of Au/CN sample toward photocatalytic coproduction of H 2 and furfural. Both photoluminescence spectroscopy and photoelectrochemical measurements demonstrated the more efficient separation and transfer of photogenerated charge carriers in Ni-Au/g-C 3 N 4 photocatalyst. In situ electron spin resonance revealed the generations of hydroxyl radical and carbon center radical in the photocatalytic reaction. Based on the systematic characterizations, a photocatalytic mechanism was proposed and discussed. This work provides a rational construction of photocatalysts for coproduction of H 2 and value-added chemicals from biomass derivatives as well as explores the synergistic effect of bimetallic cocatalyst on enhancing the photocatalysis.

Electrostatic Adsorption and Cytotoxity of Cellulose Nanocrystals with Loading Trace Metal Elements

Li Xie,Yue Zhang,Ao Huang,Ji Zhou,Ning Lin,Xiang Lu

Cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) is the rod-like nano-object derived from natural cellulose with the features of low toxicity and good biocompatibility, widely used as the functional additive and nanomaterial in the biomedicine. Two negatively charged cellulose nanocrystals, CNC and TO-CNC (surface oxidized CNC), are prepared by the sulfuric acid hydrolysis and further surface oxidization. Based on electrostatic adsorption, five trace metal elements (TMEs) including cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), manganese (Mn), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd) are loaded on the surface of two nanocrystals as the biocompatible nanocarriers. The adsorbed contents of TMEs on two nanocrystals are affected by their surface charge densities and the complexes can keep stability under three varied pH conditions. Two cell lines, viz. human nasopharyngeal cancer cell and normal human bronchial epithelial cell, are selected for the investigation of cytotoxity of these TME-loaded nanocrystals at the concentration range of 0.1–500 µg mL −1 . The high concentrations of TME-loaded nanocrystals will induce the inhibition of cells activity and proliferation, particularly for Pb 2+ - and Cd 2+ -loaded nanocrystals. The cancer cell generally exhibits more sensitivity of cytotoxity to these metal elements than the normal cell, which may be potentially used as the activity inhibitor for specific cells in the future study.

Nanocellulose-enhanced organohydrogel with high-strength, conductivity, and anti-freezing properties for wearable strain sensors

Yanpeng Cheng,Junjiao Zang,Xin Zhao,Hang Wang,Yingcheng Hu

The use of ion-conductive hydrogels in strain sensors with high mechanical properties, conductivity, and anti-freezing properties is challenging. Here, high-strength, transparent, conductive, and anti-freezing organohydrogels were fabricated through the radical polymerization of polyacrylamide (PAM)/sodium alginate (SA)/TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (TOCNs) in a dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)/water solution, followed by soaking in a CaCl 2 solution. The resulting organohydrogels demonstrated a high strength (tensile strength of 1.04 MPa), stretchability (681%), transparency (>84% transmittance), and ionic conductivity (1.25 S m −1 ). The organohydrogel-based strain sensor showed a high strain sensitivity ( GF  = 2.1). In addition, due to a synergistic effect between the DMSO/H 2 O binary solvent and CaCl 2 , the organohydrogel remained flexible (could bend 180°) and conductive (1.01 S m −1 ) at −20 °C. Interestingly, the TOCNs exerted a reinforcing effect on both the mechanical properties and ionic conductivity. This research provides a novel strategy to prepare ion-conductive organohydrogels with good mechanical properties, conductivity, and anti-freezing properties for use as flexible electronic materials.

Polyvinyl alcohol based bio-composite films reinforced by liquefaction products and cellulose nanofibrils from coconut coir

Jun Wu,Dun Wang,Fanrong Meng,Jihui Li,Chunqing Huo,Xueyu Du,Shuying Xu

In this study, coconut coir was chemically converted to coir-polyols (CP) via atmospheric liquefaction under microwave assistance, during which a combination of polyethylene glycol 400 and glycerol, and 98% sulfuric acid were applied as the liquefaction solvents and catalyst, respectively. The obtained CP was then analyzed in terms of its molecular weight distribution, hydroxyl values, and functional groups. Later, CP/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) bio-composite films reinforced without and with coir cellulose nanofibrils (CCNF) were prepared. After comprehensive characterization, the CP/PVA films exhibited higher stability in medium-temperature range, while the CCNF/CP/PVA films on the other hand possessed higher properties of tensile strength, elongation at break, and water resistance. The proper dosage of reinforcing agents for preparing PVA-based ternary blend films were proposed at 3% of CCNF and 10% of CP (based on film dry weight), which exhibited the best balance of properties in the critical parameters such as tensile strength and elongation at break.

Impact of calcium ions and degree of oxidation on the structural, physicochemical, and in-vitro release properties of resveratrol-loaded oxidized gellan gum hydrogel beads

Peng Wang,Zhi-gang Luo,Zhi-gang Xiao,Ahmed S.M. Saleh

Oxidized gellan gum (OGG) hydrogel beads as delivery systems for resveratrol were fabricated by ionic cross-linking with calcium chloride (CaCl 2 ). The degree of oxidation (DO) and CaCl 2 concentration had significant influences on the formation and functional properties of hydrogel beads. The resveratrol encapsulation efficiency (66.43%–79.84%) and loading capacity (4.15%–5.05%) of OGG hydrogel beads were enhanced as DO increased. The hydrogel beads exhibited a uniform spherical shape as observed by scanning electron microscope. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis confirmed that hydrogen bonds and ionic interaction participated in the formation of hydrogel beads. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the physical state of resveratrol was changed from crystalline to amorphous form after encapsulation. Furthermore, the physical stability and antioxidant capacity evaluation demonstrated that the hydrogel bead fabricated with DO80 OGG and CaCl 2 concentration of 1.0 M could provide high protection for resveratrol against degradation by environmental stresses and maintain its antioxidant capacity. The DO and CaCl 2 concentrations could modulate the in-vitro release behaviors of hydrogel beads and obtain a good small intestinal-targeted release of resveratrol at high DO and medium CaCl 2 concentration. These findings suggested that a promising delivery system for encapsulating bioactive ingredients can be fabricated by rational design.

Highly ionic conductive and mechanically strong MXene/CNF membranes for osmotic energy conversion

Zhe Sun,Mehraj Ahmad,Zongxia Gao,Zhu Shan,Liangmao Xu,Sha Wang,Yongcan Jin

Controllable ion transport in nanofluidic membranes is highly desirable for industrial applications, including energy harvesting, molecular separation, and nanofiltration. However, the nanofluidic materials synthesized using the traditional approach still suffer from complex preparation, insufficient charge density, and poor aqueous stability. Herein, we describe a mechanically robust nanofluidic membrane coupled with highly charged lamellar nanochannels, which is formed through the sequential bridging and alignment of MXene nanosheets and TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (MXene/CNF). The ion conductivity of the MXene/CNF membrane reached up to 4 × 10−3 S cm−1 at a low KCl concentration, while its tensile strength was as high as 171.2 MPa. The MXene/CNF membrane also showed prominent aqueous stability and maintained its high ion conductivity over a period of 10 days. Moreover, an osmotic energy generator based on the MXene/CNF membrane yielded the maximum output power density of 0.15 W m−2 at 1000-fold concentration gradient. The results demonstrated that the MXene/CNF-based nanofluidic membrane can be effectively utilized in the development of high-performance osmotic energy conversion devices.

Preparation and adsorption performance of cellulose nanofibrils/polyvinyl alcohol composite gel spheres with millimeter size

Qing Yi,Sheng Lu,Yutong Fan,Dehua Cheng,Xumei Wang,Shaoling Cheng,Hongxiang Xie

Wastewater treatment is a huge problem facing human beings. The development of recyclable and efficient adsorption materials is of great benefit to solve the problem. Based on the biodegradable cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) derived from biomass resources , the large sized CNFs/PVA composite hydrogel spheres (CV-HSs, 1–3 mm) were successfully prepared by the inverse suspension pellet-forming technology using the polymers as raw materials, and another hydrophobic CNFs/PVA composite aerogel spheres (HCV-ASs) were also obtained by lyophilization and followed silylation of as-prepared CV-HSs. The CV-HSs showed excellent adsorption properties for simulated pollutants, including Cu 2+ , phenol and aniline in water. The maximum absorption capacity of CV-HSs was 17.22 mmol/g for Cu 2+ , 176.72 mg/g for phenol and 341.93 mg/g for aniline respectively. The HCV-ASs exhibited good absorption properties for weak polar organic solvents , such as petroleum ether, ethyl acetate and toluene. In summary, two kinds of large-sized CNFs/PVA composite gel spheres were successfully fabricated, and exhibited good adsorption properties for organic pollutants and heavy metal ions , indicating their potential for wastewater treatment.

A direct competitive nanozyme-linked immunosorbent assay based on MnO2 nanosheets as a catalytic label for the determination of fumonisin B1

Xinfa Cai,Meijuan Liang,Fei Ma,Sherif Ramzy Mohamed,Amira Abdel Goda,Dawood H. Dawood,Li Yu,Peiwu Li

A direct competitive nanozyme-linked immunosorbent assay (dcNLISA) based on MnO2 nanosheets (MnO2 NSs) as a nanozyme label was developed for the highly sensitive determination of fumonisin B1 (FB1). MnO2 NS-labeled fumonisin B1-bovine serum albumin was easily synthesized as a competing antigen for the dcNLISA. And color changes derived from the MnO2–3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) system were exploited as the output signals of the dcNLISA. Several experimental parameters including the concentrations of the coating antibody, pH values, ionic strength and methanol concentration were optimized. Under the optimal conditions, the proposed method demonstrated a linear range (1.17–20.74 ng mL−1) with a reliable correlation coefficient (R2 = 0.9989), a satisfactory limit of detection (0.63 ng mL−1) and high selectivity for the detection of FB1. The recoveries of FB1 in spiked corn and wheat samples were in the range of 85.31–108.16% with coefficients of variation (CVs) ranging from 6.14% to 9.23%. Meanwhile, the testing results showed good consistency (R2 = 0.9892) between the developed dcNLISA and the reference method, liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method. The proposed method was proven to be simple, sensitive, cost-effective and reliable for the screening of FB1 in cereals.

Effective Adsorption and Sensitive Detection of Cr(VI) by Chitosan/Cellulose Nanocrystals Grafted with Carbon Dots Composite Hydrogel

Hua Zeng,Zhiyuan Hu,Chang Peng,Lei Deng,Suchun Liu

Due to its lethal effect on the human body and other creatures, Cr(VI) ions have attained widespread public attention, and an effective adsorbent for removing Cr(VI) ions is vital. Chitosan (CS)/cellulose nanocrystals grafted with carbon dots (CNCD) composite hydrogel with strong sorption ability and sensitive detection ability for Cr(VI) was formed. The cellulose nanocrystals (CN) offered a natural skeleton for assembling 3D porous structures, and then improved the sorption ability for Cr(VI); moreover, carbon dots (CD) acted as a fluorescent probe for Cr(VI) and provided Cr(VI) adsorption sites. With a maximum adsorption capacity of 217.8 mg/g, the CS/CNCD composite hydrogel exhibited efficient adsorption properties. Meanwhile, with a detection limit of 0.04 μg/L, this hydrogel was used for selective and quantitative detection of Cr(VI). The determination of Cr(VI) was based on the inner filter effect (IFE) and static quenching. This hydrogel retained its effective adsorption ability even after four repeated regenerations. Furthermore, the economic feasibility of the CS/CNCD composite hydrogel over activated carbon was confirmed using cost analysis. This study provided one new method for producing low-cost adsorbents with effective sorption and sensitive detection for Cr(VI).Keywords:chitosan;cellulose nanocrystals;carbon dots;adsorption;hexavalent chromium

A novel medically imageable intelligent cellulose nanofibril-based injectable hydrogel for the chemo-photothermal therapy of tumors

Zhiping Chen,Rimei Chen,Chao Zhao,Zongyan Quan,Hongxiang Zhu,Lei Wang,Qing Bu,Yonghui He,Hui He

The design of injectable hydrogels with excellent biocompatibility, medical imaging, and antitumor activity to improve the therapeutic efficiency on tumor tissues and to reduce toxic side effects is very important in clinical practice. A novel medically imageable pH-, temperature- and NIR- intelligent cellulose nanofibril (TOCNF)-based injectable hydrogel was designed using pH-, and temperature-responsive TOCNF as the carrier, citric-acid-stabilized Prussian blue nanoparticles (PBNPs) as the contrast agent and photothermal switch, and doxorubicin (DOX) as the chemotherapeutics agent. The hydrogel possessed a nanocage structure and a 3D network structure, which allowed a high loading capacity of PBNPs (2 mg/g) and DOX (415 mg/g). The PBNPs stabilized on TOCNF through electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bond could aid medical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and photoacoustic imaging (PAI). Interestingly, the temperature, pH, and NIR tri-stimuli-responsive intelligent switches, inspired by the mimosa leaf, contributed to the controllable sustained DOX release property of the hydrogel. Therefore, in vivo bimodal MRI/PAI and tumor therapy results showed that the previously prepared hydrogel could be ideal for the rapid diagnosis and chemo-photothermal therapy in the clinical treatment of tumors.
