Enrofloxacin (ENR), characterized by its remarkable stability and resistance to degradation, has become a significant contaminant in aquatic ecosystems. In this study, a CNC/UiO-66(Fe) composite was synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal method, and response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to optimize the key experimental conditions for the efficient removal of ENR from aqueous solutions. The incorporation of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) improved the dispersibility and stability of UiO-66, and significantly enhanced the crystallinity of the material, as confirmed by XRD analysis. Iron (Fe) doping introduced additional active sites and defects, synergistically enhancing the overall adsorption capacity. The composite exhibited a high BET surface area of 1294.81 m 2 /g and a well-developed porous structure. The adsorption process was spontaneous and exothermic, fitting well with both the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model. Under alkaline conditions, the material showed excellent adsorption performance, with a theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of 275.84 mg/g for ENR at 25°C and pH 10. The adsorption mechanism involved multiple synergistic interactions, including electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bonding, π-π stacking, metal coordination, and pore filling. Furthermore, CNC/UiO-66(Fe) exhibited excellent stability and reusability, retaining over 80% of its removal efficiency after five cycles. This study provides an effective and sustainable approach for remediating antibiotic contaminants in aquatic environments.

This study developed a novel defective composite material (UiO-66/D-AMP) based on defect engineering and in situ synthesis of ammonium phosphomolybdate (AMP) for the highly selective capture of Cs + and Sr 2+ . The changes in adsorption capacity and surface functional groups of the composite before and after defect engineering were analyzed by adsorption experiment and FT-IR characterization. It was found that the defect-engineered composite had obvious carboxyl groups, and the adsorption efficiency of Sr 2+ was effectively improved. Several analytical methods were employed to verify the effective incorporation of AMP onto the UiO-66 framework. SEM-EDS was utilized to examine surface morphology and elemental composition. FTIR confirmed the presence of functional groups, while XRD analysis validated the crystalline structure. Additionally, TG assessed thermal stability, and BET measurements determined the material's surface area and porosity, collectively confirming AMP loading. The UiO-66/D-AMP composite exhibited significant adsorption affinity for both Cs + and Sr 2+ ions, demonstrating its potential for radioactive wastewater treatment. Under alkaline conditions (pH 10), the composite demonstrated exceptional removal efficiencies of 98.43% for Cs + and 99.54% for Sr 2+ . The maximum adsorption capacities were determined to be 104.3 mg/g for Cs + and 20.18 mg/g for Sr 2+ . Notably, the adsorption kinetics revealed rapid equilibration times of 5 min for Cs + and 60 min for Sr 2+ . The adsorption kinetics of Cs + and Sr 2+ followed the pseudo-second-order model, while the adsorption isotherms fitted well with the Langmuir model. In mixed solutions containing Cs + , Sr 2+ , and four competing ions, UiO-66/D-AMP exhibited excellent selectivity for both Cs + and Sr 2+ . Remarkably, the adsorption capacities for Cs + and Sr 2+ remained stable following exposure to various adsorbed doses. XPS provided direct evidence for the ion exchange mechanism between Cs + and NH 4 + during adsorption. Sr 2+ first exchanged with H + on UiO-66/D-AMP, then coordinated with the oxygen atom in the carboxyl group to be adsorbed.

The development of highly active catalysts is crucial for oxidative desulfurization (ODS) to meet the growing demand for sulfur-free fuels. In this study, a defect-rich composite catalyst UiO-DAlaPW was successfully synthesized via mechanochemical grinding, wherein phosphotungstic acid (HPW) was encapsulated within a defect-engineered UiO-66 framework, utilizing D-alanine (DAla) as a bridging molecule. The synthesized catalyst, UiO-DAlaPW, significantly enhances the utilization efficiency of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ). In the model oil ODS system, the material exhibited exceptional catalytic performance: achieving deep desulfurization at room temperature within merely 5 min under conditions of extremely low acetonitrile cosolvent usage and a low oxidant/sulfur (O/S) ratio, accompanied by remarkably high H 2 O 2 utilization efficiency. Moreover, the catalyst maintained high desulfurization efficiency even in the absence of acetonitrile. Characterization by XRD, FT-IR, TGA, and XPS confirmed the successful encapsulation of HPW within the UiO-66 framework. Mechanistic studies revealed a significant synergistic effect between UiO-66 and HPW. The effective cooperation of the two active sites, namely Zr in UiO-66 and PW, significantly enhances the catalytic performance, contributing to superior oxidative desulfurization activity.

The environmental pollution resulting from organic dye wastewater presents a significant threat to human health. Photocatalysis has emerged as a highly promising approach for mitigating wastewater contamination. In this study, a novel synthetic strategy was developed using NH 2 -UiO-66 as a template. By precisely controlling the amount of Ag + ions introduced into the NH 2 -UiO-66 precursor and employing a straightforward reduction approach, the Ag-NH 2 -UiO-66 composite photocatalyst was successfully synthesized. Comprehensive characterization via X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron microscopy (XPS) confirmed that the incorporated Ag+ ions were effectively reduced to metallic silver and uniformly dispersed within the porous framework. Photocatalytic degradation experiments employing Rhodamine B (RhB) as a model pollutant under ultraviolet irradiation demonstrated that the catalyst with a silver loading of 0.05 mol/L achieved a maximum degradation efficiency of 91% within 150 min, markedly surpassing the 39% efficiency exhibited by pristine NH 2 -UiO-66. Furthermore, cyclic stability tests verified the catalyst's excellent reusability and structural durability. Mechanistic investigations revealed that superoxide radicals (O 2 − ) served as the predominant reactive species responsible for RhB degradation in the Ag-NH 2 -UiO-66 system. This work presents a simple and effective strategy for fabricating highly efficient and stable MOF-based photocatalysts for the remediation of dye-contaminated wastewater.

In recent years, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have proven to be effective nanofillers for fabricating thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes for dye wastewater treatment. In this study, University of Oslo-66 (UiO-66) was modified with polydopamine (PDA) to synthesize PDA@UiO-66 nanoparticles, aiming to overcome their inherent dispersion and compatibility limitations. Subsequently, TFN membranes incorporating PDA@UiO-66 (denoted as TFN-PDU) were fabricated via interfacial polymerization using an aqueous piperazine (PIP) solution containing well-dispersed PDA@UiO-66 and an organic trimesoyl chloride (TMC) solution. Owing to the suitable pore size, improved hydrophilicity, and enhanced compatibility of PDA@UiO-66, the prepared TFN-PDU membranes exhibited elevated water permeability, salt rejection, and dye desalination performance compared to the pristine thin-film composite (TFC) membrane and the TFN membrane containing unmodified UiO-66. The effects of different PDA@UiO-66 loadings on membrane morphology, structure, and performance were systematically investigated. Compared to the conventional UiO-66-incorporated TFN membrane (water permeability: 5.21 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 ), the optimal TFN-PDU2 membrane (with 0.10 wt% PDA@UiO-66 loading) exhibited a higher water permeability of 6.85 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 , an increased Na 2 SO 4 rejection (from 87.6% to 89.4%), and an enhanced methylene blue (MB) rejection (from 93.4% to 95.6%). This study provides a feasible strategy for designing high-performance TFN membranes using hydrophilic MOFs for efficient dye wastewater treatment.

A reasonable introduction of MOFs-derived Ni 2 P with high dispersion is a valid way to reduce the recombination rate of photogenerated electron holes , thus enabling more effective visible light-driven water splitting. Herein, the MOF-on-MOF strategy was used to prepare Ni 2 P@UiO-66-NH 2 by in situ growth of Ni-MOF on UiO-66-NH 2 followed by vapor-phase phosphating, and the composite photocatalyst of CdS/Ni 2 P@UiO-66-NH 2 was obtained by a facile ultrasound method in solvent. UiO-66-NH 2 provides the growth site for Ni-MOF, enabling uniform dispersion of Ni 2 P and the firmly anchoring of CdS. By adjusting the proportion of Ni 2 P@UiO-66-NH 2 , the light absorption capacity and photocatalytic activity can be further optimized. The hydrogen production efficiency of CdS/Ni 2 P@UiO-66-NH 2 can reach up to 2103 µmol·g −1 ·h −1 , which is about 7 times higher than that of pure CdS. The improvement of the photocatalytic performance of CdS/Ni 2 P@UiO-66-NH 2 composites can be mainly ascribed to the increased active sites exposure, well dispersion of CdS, and the creation of multiple heterojunctions , which tune the band gap, broaden the visible light absorption, and facilitate the carrier separation. This work offers an efficient synthetic strategy for creating ternary composites with remarkable catalytic activity and high stability for hydrogen evolution .

Endotoxins, specifically lipopolysaccharides (LPS), are components of the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria. Due to the fact that even extremely low concentrations of endotoxins can trigger the human body’s inflammatory cascade, there is an urgent need to develop highly sensitive detection technologies for accurate identification and quantitative analysis of trace amounts of endotoxin. This study, based on an electrochemical sensing platform constructed using AuNPs/NH 2 –UiO-66/PEI/MCNs functionalized nanocomposite materials, has successfully achieved efficient detection of endotoxins in food. Given the complex food matrix and numerous interfering substances, this sensor enhances its anti-interference capability through a multi-level cooperative interface design. It uses polyethyleneimine-modified mesoporous carbon nanospheres (PEI/MCNs) as the substrate and integrates the directional loading capability of NH 2 -UIO-66 with the conductivity-enhancing effect of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), thereby significantly improving signal stability. This biosensor achieves a remarkable detection limit as low as 40 fg/mL, enabling trace-level identification of LPS. Additionally, it exhibits excellent selectivity against common foodborne interferents, facilitating rapid and accurate LPS detection. This study presents a novel, portable detection solution for the rapid screening of microbial contamination in food. The nanocomposite interface construction strategy employed herein provides significant guidance for developing trace-level hazard detection technologies in complex matrices. Graphical

Engineering the surface and interfacial architectures of nanomaterials is fundamental to bridging the gap between dispersion stability and tribological efficiency. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), characterized by their structural diversity and programmable surface chemistries, represent a burgeoning class of organic–inorganic hybrids for next-generation lubricant additives. Herein, we systematically decipher the synergistic interplay between metal-node identity (M = Ce, Zr, Hf) and surface amphiphilicity in steering the tribological behavior of UiO-type frameworks. Through precise amidation-induced grafting of gradient alkyl chains (C4/C8), we achieved nuanced control over surface hydrophobicity while maintaining structural integrity. Notably, the octanoic-functionalized Zr-UiO-66-NH2 exhibits exceptional lubrication performance in 500SN base oil; at a low loading of 0.2 wt %, it yields a 27% reduction in the steady-state friction coefficient and a remarkable 81% suppression in wear volume. Advanced surface analysis reveals that the alkyl-chain functionalization promotes the enrichment of aliphatic and carbonyl moieties at the sliding interface, effectively lowering interfacial adhesion and shear resistance. Furthermore, XPS depth profiling identifies a robust, protective tribofilm composed of MOF-derived inorganic clusters and organic decomposition products, which significantly enhances oxidative stability. This work provides a versatile strategy for the molecular-level engineering of MOF-based additives to meet the demands of high-performance lubrication technologies.

Efficient separation of organic dyes from inorganic salts in high-salinity textile wastewater remains a major challenge for resource recovery. Although graphene oxide (GO) membranes show promise for ion-sieving applications, their practical use is hindered by interlayer swelling, pore compaction, and the inherent permeability–selectivity trade-off. Here, a synergistic interlayer-engineering strategy based on a “skeleton–filler” architecture is proposed using CNT/UiO-66-NH 2 to regulate the GO/substrate interface. In this architecture, carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT-COOH) scaffolds, together with metal–organic framework (MOF) particles, effectively mask the macroporous defects of the substrate and suppress sagging of the flexible GO nanosheets. Meanwhile, the hierarchical interlayer creates low-resistance transport pathways, thereby generating a gutter effect and reducing mass-transfer resistance. Consequently, the optimized GCU-27 membrane delivers a high water permeance of 105.14 L·m ‒2 ·h ‒1 ·bar ‒1 , together with a high Congo red rejection of 99.91% and a low MgCl 2 rejection of 3.60%. As a result, a high separation factor of 1071.11 is achieved. In addition, GCU-27 shows good antifouling performance ( = 88.16%) and stable separation performance during 100 h of continuous operation at 70 °C. This work provides an effective interfacial-engineering strategy and mechanistic insight for the rational design of high-performance GO-based membranes for dye/salt fractionation.

Patulin (PAT), a hazardous mycotoxin found in fruits and their products, poses significant health risks. While UiO-66-NH2 has been primarily explored as an adsorbent or carrier for mycotoxin removal, this study investigates its previously underexplored role as an oxidase-mimicking nanozyme for PAT degradation. UiO-66-NH2 achieved a maximum degradation efficiency of 84.01% within 48 h and 97.63% after 96 h. Mechanism studies revealed that the Zr–O cluster activates O2 to generate reactive oxygen species (·O2– and ·OH), which mediate the oxidative opening of the lactone and furan rings in PAT. The −NH2 enhances both PAT affinity and electron transfer of UiO-66. Three-dimensional fluorescence and LC-MS/MS analyses identified four degradation products (C7H7O5, C7H9O7, C4H5O5, and C3H5O3), enabling the proposal of a plausible degradation pathway. Applied to apple juice, UiO-66-NH2 removed 85.29% of PAT in 72 h, with a negligible impact on juice quality. This work offers an efficient nanozyme-based strategy for PAT detoxification in food applications.

The development of efficient oxidative desulfurization (ODS) catalysts is of great importance for clean energy. In this study, we report a method for the preparation of defect-enriched UiO-66(Zr) materials via a high-energy ball-milling pretreatment-assisted followed by rapid ethanol crystallization. This method significantly enhances ligand deficiency (46.1 %) and average pore diameter (4.1 nm) without using toxic solvents or pre-synthesized clusters, distinguishing it from conventional solvothermal and one-step mechanochemical approaches. Under the optimal parameters, the resulting UiO-66-BM catalyst exhibits excellent ODS performance, achieving full conversion of dibenzothiophene (DBT, 1000 ppm) within 6 min at 50 °C and 20 min at 30 °C using only 20 mg of catalyst and an O/S molar ratio of 5. The turnover frequency (19.85 h −1 ) and mass specific activity (53 mmol g −1 h −1 ) surpass those of most reported pristine MOFs-based catalysts. Moreover, the catalyst reaction activity maintains high activity over six consecutive cycles, showing excellent stability. The superior performance is attributed to the synergistic effect of ball milling and ethanol crystallization, which generates the enriched structural defects and enlarged mesopores, facilitating mass transfer and active site accessibility. This work presents an effective and eco-friendly strategy for the scalable synthesis of high-performance MOF catalysts for deep desulfurization.

NH 2 -UIO-66 has been regarded as a promising porous material owing to its high specific surface area and structural stability, although its limited conductivity restricts its application in supercapacitors. In this work, a NiCo 2 S 4 /NH 2 -UIO-66 nanoflower composite (NCS/NU) was synthesized via a vulcanization process with thioacetamide. Electrochemical measurements conducted in a three-electrode system revealed that the composite delivered a specific capacitance of 172.4 mAh g −1 at 1 A g −1 and maintained 82.1% of its initial capacitance after 5000 cycles at 5 A g −1 . Morphological characterization indicated that the nanoflower architecture was largely preserved after sulfurization. The in-situ formed NiCo 2 S 4 contributed to enhanced pseudocapacitance and induced surface wrinkling of the petals, which helped stabilize the composite structure supported by NH 2 -UIO-66. For the anode, S and N co-doped three-dimensional porous carbon (SNC) was prepared via a sol-gel method followed by stepwise high-temperature carbonization using ammonium persulfate as the activator. A hybrid supercapacitor was subsequently assembled with the NCS/NU as the positive electrode and SNC-700 as the negative electrode. The device delivered an energy density of 28.8 Wh kg −1 and retained 74.1% of its initial capacitance after 5000 charge-discharge cycles.
