A new ternary composite of 1T-molybdenum disulfide, hexagonal tungsten trioxide, and reduced graphene oxide (M-W-rGO) is synthesized by using a one-pot hydrothermal process. The synergetic effect of 1T-MoS 2 and hexa-WO 3 nanoflowers improves the electrochemical performance for supercapacitors by inducing additional active sites and hexagonal tunnels, respectively, which lead to high storage capacity and easy transfer of electrolyte ions. The ternary M-W-rGO composite has a high specific capacitance of 836 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 , which is nearly twice that of binary composites of M-rGO and W-rGO with high capacitance retention of 86.35 % after 3000 cycles at a high current density of 5 A g −1 . This study provides a new ternary composite that can be used as an electrode material for high-performance supercapacitors. Graphical The flower of supercapacitors : 1T-MoS 2 and hexa-WO 3 nanoflowers are grown on a 3D network of reduced graphene oxide by using a one-pot hydrothermal process. The hexagonal tunnel structure of WO 3 and 1T conducting phase of MoS 2 provide additional active sites, high storage capacity, and easy electronic transportation for high-performance supercapacitor applications.

Functionalization of metal-oxide semiconductors by noble metal nanoparticles is one of the most efficient methods for enhancing the gas-sensing property of semiconducting sensors. Herein, we synthesized a series of Au-loaded hierarchical WO3 hollow microspheres (Au-WO3) via a facile modified solvothermal method combining with wet impregnation method. The structure, elemental composition, and morphology of the synthesized materials were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope, and transmission electron microscopy. The results show that the materials are uniform and independent WO3 hollow microspheres, and Au nanoparticles are well distributed on the surface of WO3. The gas sensing properties of Au-WO3 materials were investigated and the results suggest that Au loading could greatly improve gas sensing performance of WO3 to aromatic compounds, especially toluene and xylene. Among the samples with different Au loading content, the one with 1.5 wt% Au (G3) exhibits the highest responses toward toluene and xylene at 340 °C. Moreover, the G3 sensor presents good responses, short response/recovery time, excellent selectivity, good reproducibility, and long-term stability to toluene and xylene. Excellent gas sensing properties of Au-WO3 material make it a good candidate for detecting toluene and xylene.

WO 3 –CeO 2 –TiO 2 catalysts for NO (nitrogen monoxide) reduction by ammonia were prepared by a sol–gel method. The catalysts were characterized by BET, XRD, Raman, NH 3 /NO adsorption and H 2 -TPR to investigate the relationships among the catalyst composition, structure, redox property, acidity and deNO x activity. WO 3 –CeO 2 –TiO 2 catalysts show a high activity in a broad temperature range of 200–480 °C. The low-temperature activity of catalysts is sensitive to the catalyst composition especially under low-O 2 -content atmospheres. It may be related to the synergistic effect between CeO x and WO x in the catalysts. On one hand, the interaction between ceria and tungsten oxide promotes the activation of gaseous oxygen to compensate the lattice oxygen consumed in NH 3 -SCR (selective catalytic reduction) reaction at low temperatures. Meanwhile, the Brønsted acid sites mainly arise from tungsten oxides, Lewis acid sites mainly arise from ceria. Both of the Brønsted and Lewis acid sites facilitate the adsorption of NH 3 on catalysts and improve the stability of the adsorbed ammonia species, which are beneficial to the NH 3 -SCR reaction.

The adsorption of Sr2+ ions onto Ta-doped hex-WO3 nanomaterials was studied by measuring the zeta potentials of the powder nanoparticles and by determining the adsorption isotherm and adsorption mechanism. Five important results were obtained: (1) the zeta potential
values of the Ta-doped hex-WO3 suspensions in different electrolyte solutions, within the studied pH ranges, increased with an increase in electrolyte valence; and (2) the zeta potential of the Ta-doped hex-WO3 suspensions increased with an increase in ionic strength.
(3) Sr2+ ion adsorption increased with a decrease in temperature and ionic strength. (4) The adsorption enthalpy was calculated as 47 kJ·mol-1, and the interaction between the Ta-doped hex-WO3 surface and Sr2+ ions was concluded to be chemical
in nature. (5) The adsorption of Sr2+ ions onto the Ta-doped hex-WO3 was attributed to surface chemical adsorption and ion exchange (in tunnels).

Energy used in buildings for heating, cooling, and lighting has been one of the most important sector in the global energy consumption. To decrease the energy consumption in buildings, smart windows that can flexibly change their optical and thermal properties is considered as a promising technology. In this work, a multifunctional smart window is designed by using a complementary structure based on a tungsten oxide thin film and a Prussian blue thin film, which is powered by an integrated dye-sensitized solar cell. A partly covered TiO 2 thick layer accompanied with I − /I 3 − redox severs as the photo-electron conversion system. The WO 3 thin film and Prussian blue thin film are employed as complementary electrochromic layers. The as-designed smart window exhibits continuously adjustable optical modulation and temperature regulation corresponding to the switch between different working modes. Moreover, the device shows energy-storage ability with a specific capacitance of 11.5 mF cm −2 and excellent durability. The as-designed solar-powered multifunctional and multimode electrochromic device presents promising application potentiality as smart windows in modern buildings.

Visible-light-driven photocatalysis offers a sustainable strategy to eliminate indoor volatile organic compounds (VOCs) like acetaldehyde (AA), thereby improving indoor air quality. Although heterojunctions based on MoS 2 quantum dots (MQDs) attract attention for oxidation reactions, MQDs/WO 3 composites for VOC removal remain largely underexplored. In this study, MQDs/WO 3 heterojunctions were constructed by coupling MQDs with monoclinic (m-WO 3 ) and hexagonal (h-WO 3 ) phases to systematically investigate phase-dependent charge transfer, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, and AA degradation pathways. Comprehensive characterizations indicated that MQDs incorporation increased oxygen vacancies, promoted ROS generation, and enhanced visible-light absorption. Furthermore, PL and in situ DRIFTS analyses revealed that MQDs/m-WO 3 exhibited superior electron-hole separation and stronger surface reactivity than the h-WO 3 system. DFT calculations confirmed MQDs as the primary adsorption sites for indoor VOCs, with MQDs/m-WO 3 exhibiting stronger AA adsorption. Consequently, the optimized 0.5MQDs/m-WO 3 demonstrated enhanced AA degradation and mineralization under visible light, exhibiting excellent stability under indoor-relevant operating conditions. This work provides profound insights into interface-regulated charge transfer and offers a promising material design strategy for advanced indoor air purification.

Multicarbon fuel synthesis achieved via photothermal-photocatalytic coupling. • Localized thermal flux synergizes with charge dynamics to accelerate surface kinetics. • Pt loading minimizes carrier recombination and maximizes solar-to-chemical efficiency. The integration of photothermal and photocatalytic processes presents a promising pathway to boost solar-driven CO 2 conversion, yet achieving efficient photo–heat synergy under concentrated sunlight remains challenging. Here, we report a Pt-nanoparticle-decorated WO 3 catalyst fabricated via chemical reduction, which demonstrates exceptional activity for CO 2 reduction under concentrated solar irradiation. The optimized 0.8Pt/WO 3 catalyst achieves CO, CH 4 , and C 2 H 4 production rates of 4.12, 2.12, and 0.63 μmol·h −1 ·g −1 , respectively, with a noteworthy 25.8- and 28.3-fold enhancement in CO and CH 4 yields upon switching from unconcentrated to concentrated light. Systematic characterization reveals that Pt nanoparticles not only act as electron sinks to facilitate charge separation and interfacial transfer, but also enhance visible-light absorption and photothermal conversion. Under concentrated irradiation, the coupled photothermal effect elevates the local temperature to ∼405 °C, promotes high-density carrier accumulation, and significantly lowers the apparent activation energy from 21.21 to 13.80 kJ·mol −1 . This work elucidates a synergistic photothermal–photocatalytic mechanism where enhanced charge dynamics and localized heating jointly drive efficient CO 2 valorization, offering a design blueprint for high-performance solar fuel catalysts.

Dual-template hydrothermal synthesis of high-area WO 3 nanosheets. • Ce doping tunes WO 3 with optimal NO 2 sensing at 3% doping level. • Fivefold higher response (189.6 toward 10 ppm NO 2 at 150 °C) vs WO 3 . • Detection limit of 25 ppb with fast response/recovery (28/37 s). Nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) is a hazardous air pollutant, necessitating the development of highly sensitive sensors operating at low temperatures. Herein, Ce-doped WO 3 nanosheets with enhanced surface reactivity were fabricated via a dual-template hydrothermal strategy using PVP and P123. The dual-template approach enables the formation of uniform nanosheets with enlarged specific surface area and abundant accessible active sites, thereby boosting surface adsorption and reaction kinetics. Ce doping further tailors the surface and electronic structures by introducing abundant oxygen vacancies and defect levels that reduce the apparent optical bandgap from 2.45 to 2.37 eV, which enhances charge transfer and adsorption capability. As a result, the 3% Ce-WO 3 sensor exhibits optimal performance at 150°C, delivering a high response of 189.6 toward 10 ppm NO 2 , nearly five times higher than that of pristine WO 3 , along with a low detection limit of 25 ppb, excellent selectivity, and long-term stability. Mechanistic analysis reveals that the synergistic effects of dual-template-derived surface reactivity and Ce-induced electronic modulation reduce the activation energy from 0.57 to 0.31 eV, thereby facilitating NO 2 adsorption and surface redox reactions at low temperatures. This work provides an effective strategy for the rational design of high-performance gas sensors for low-temperature NO 2 detection. Download: Download high-res image (91KB) Download: Download full-size image In summary, we have successfully synthesized Ce-doped WO 3 nanosheets via a dual-template hydrothermal method and systematically investigated their NO 2 sensing performance. Among the investigated samples, the sensor with 3% Ce doping exhibited the optimal NO 2 sensing performance, delivering a high response of 189.6 toward 10 ppm NO 2 at 150°C, which is approximately five times higher than that of pristine WO 3 under identical conditions. In addition, a low detection limit of 25 ppb was achieved, along with rapid response and recovery times of 28 s and 37 s, respectively. Mechanistic investigations reveals that Ce doping introduces abundant surface oxygen vacancies, narrows the apparent optical bandgap from 2.45 to 2.37 eV, and shifts the Fermi level upward, as confirmed by XPS, UV-Vis, and Mott-Schottky measurements. These electronic structure modifications significantly reduce the activation energy and promote surface redox kinetics, thereby enabling highly efficient NO 2 detection at relatively low operating temperatures. This work demonstrates that rare-earth doping, combined with rational morphology engineering, is an effective strategy for regulating the electronic structure and surface properties of WO 3 , providing a promising approach for the development of high-performance gas sensors for next-generation environmental monitoring applications.

Abstract Selective detection of trace (weakly reducing) dimethyl sulfide (DMS) in highly humid exhaled breath using metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) sensors, with the presence of strong reducing H2S interference gas, is essential for the early diagnosis of hepatic diseases. However, it remains a big challenge in principle. Herein, a bilayer MOS sensor with a Pd–WO3 sensing film and a CuO/Al2O3 filtering overlayer was proposed. The temperature-dependent H2S catalytic oxidation experiment suggests that CuO could effectively filter H2S even under room temperature. Dispersing the CuO particles into insulative Al2O3 carrier could not only selectively remove H2S without significant consumption of DMS but also isolate the underlying Pd–WO3 sensing layer’s response signal from interference caused by that of CuO. By adding the CuO/Al2O3 1:9 filtering overlayer, the response ratio of DMS to H2S was significantly enhanced from 3.3 to 50.4, furthermore, an ultrahigh response (701.3) to 10 ppm DMS, and a low limit of detection of 10 ppb under 90% RH were achieved, which promises the future breath disease diagnosis.

Here, the photo-thermal synergistic catalytic CO 2 reduction over WN-WO 3 /In 2 O 3 was studied in detail. By changing the component ratio of the ternary catalyst, the CO/CH 4 selectivity can be precisely regulated. Besides, compared to the sole photocatalysis, the introduction of external heat significantly enhanced the reaction activity, and led to a prominent effect on production selectivity. The optimal CH 4 selectivity was given by the ternary catalyst with 20% WN dosage under the reaction condition of 200 °C and 143 mW·cm −2 of 420 nm LED irradiation, with the CO and CH 4 production rates were 21.99 and 9.51 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 , respectively. EPR tests suggested the Z-scheme carrier transfer mechanism of the ternary catalyst, and In situ DRIFTS confirmed that *COOH and *CH 3 O are the important reaction intermediates for the generation of CO and CH 4 , respectively. Our work provides a new strategy for developing catalysts with both high CO 2 reduction efficiency and good product selectivity.

The electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NO 3 - RR) offers a promising route to sustainable ammonia synthesis, potentially replacing the energy-intensive Haber-Bosch process. While often studied in neutral or alkaline media, NO 3 - RR in acidic conditions is particularly relevant due to widespread industrial acidic nitrate wastewater, yet it remains challenging due to corrosion and dominant hydrogen evolution. To address this, we designed a corrosion-resistant Ru/WO 3- x heterostructure that spatially separates proton and nitrate adsorption sites. Here, we show that a reverse hydrogen spillover effect, where the WO 3- x support stores and transports protons to surface Ru active sites, dramatically enhances hydrogenation kinetics and suppresses parasitic hydrogen evolution. This catalyst achieves an ammonia Faradaic efficiency of 94.09% at a high current density of 500 mA cm −2 and a working potential of 0.026 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode. Furthermore, we demonstrate a sulfide-nitrate “batterolyzer” with a discharge power density of 43.4 mW cm −2 . This work reveals an effective proton-management strategy for efficient acidic NO 3 - RR, advancing its potential for coupled ammonia synthesis and wastewater treatment.

Single-atom catalysts have drawn tremendous attention on account of their high activity, selectivity and stability. Z-scheme heterojunctions can effectively improve the utilization of optical energy due to the enhanced separation of photogenerated electrons and holes. In this work, several catalysts associated with single-atom Fe (FeSA) loaded on Z-scheme heterojunction WO 3 /BiOBr were prepared; their structure, morphology and photoelectric properties were analyzed; their photocatalytic degradation performance of Ciprofloxacin (CIP) was investigated; and the effects of initial pH, initial CIP concentration, catalyst dosage, light intensity , inorganic anions and humic acid on CIP removal rate were examined. Relevant results showed that the percentage of CIP removal by FeSA/WO 3 /BiOBr could reach 98.5% (120 min); the optimal conditions were pH= 9, [CIP] 0 = 10 mg/L, [FeSA] 0 = 0.8 g/L and I light = 500 W (100% degradation rate within 30 min);·O 2 - and h + were the key active species. Results of the cyclic experiments suggested good stability of the catalyst. Furthermore, the mechanism of CIP photocatalytic degradation was proposed to be a synergistic mechanism of Z-scheme heterojunction migration and valence cycling between single-atom Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ . Finally, the products and pathways of CIP degradation were analyzed.
