Ni-MOF-74-derived ZnIn2S4/P-Ni-MOF-74 Z-scheme heterojunctions for highly efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution under visible light irradiation

Hong Yao,Guozhe Sui,Jinlong Li,Dongxuan Guo,Jiaqi Wang,Yuanzhi Yue,Bing Jia,Xuan Xuan,Jing Tang

The construction of efficient Z-scheme heterojunctions is considered as a promising approach to improve the transfer and separation of photogenerated carries in the field of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from water splitting. Herein, a novel ZnIn 2 S 4 /P-Ni-MOF-74 with Z-scheme heterostructure is successfully fabricated from rhombic P-Ni-MOF-74 derived from Ni-MOF-74 through phosphorization treatment and ZnIn 2 S 4 flakes via a hydrothermal method . The Z-scheme ZnIn 2 S 4 /P-Ni-MOF-74 heterojunctions can provide abundant active centers, broaden the response range to visible light region, accelerate the transfer of interfacial charges, and suppress the recombination rate of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. As a result, ZnIn 2 S 4 /P-Ni-MOF-74 (20 wt% P-Ni-MOF-74) acquires a hydrogen production rate of 7865.31 μmol g −1 h −1 , which is 4.46 times higher than that of ZnIn 2 S 4 . An apparent quantum yield is 7.84% at 420 nm wavelength. Overall, this work may provide a new pathway for the rational design of efficient Z-scheme heterojunctions with photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

Enhanced interfacial electric field via sulfur vacancies modified ZnIn2S4-Vs@NiIn2S4 S-scheme photocatalysts for simultaneous H2 evolution and benzyl alcohol oxidation

Maoquan Wu,Yang Yang,Shouchun Ma,Xu Guo,Haochen Yu,Yaodan Cao,Jie Wu,Li Liu,Tongjie Yao

Designing and developing efficient photocatalysts for H 2 evolution and simultaneous oxidation of benzyl alcohol (BA) in aqueous environments provides a cutting-edge strategy for green synthesis. Nevertheless, the photocatalysts suffer from the low photoconversion efficiency because of the sluggish dynamics and repaid recombination of photogenerated charge carriers, which hindering their widespread applications. To address the limitation, a multifunctionnal sulfur vacancies (SVs) modified ZIS-Vs@NIS S-scheme heterojunction with a strong interfacial electric field effect was synthesized to use photocatalytic H 2 production and BA oxidation, simultaneously. Experimental analysis supports that the synergistic effect of SVs and S-scheme heterojunction engineering result in a suitable energy band structure alignment and larger Fermi level potential difference. Those factors can realize effective charge transfer and separation, and enhance the photocatalytic performance. As anticipated, ZIS-Vs@NIS exhibited a superior photocatalytic performance with H 2 and benzaldehyde (BAD) yields up to 168.1 and 146.1 μmol under the simulated solar-light irradiation for 1.0 h, respectively, which are approximately 13.3 and 11.8 times higher than pristine ZIS. Moreover, the photocatalytic H 2 evolution coupled with BA oxidative dehydrogenation mechanism via S-scheme heterojunction over ZIS-Vs@NIS is also demonstrated in detail.

Understanding the Role of Dual Zinc and Indium Vacancies in ZnIn2S4 for the Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalytic Air-Oxidation of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural

Jianghua Zhao,Yifan Wang,Huai Liu,Rui Zhang,Wenlong Jia,Junhua Zhang,Yong Sun,Lincai Peng

Defect engineering is an effective strategy to enhance the photocatalytic performance of ZnIn2S4 (ZIS), but it remains a formidable challenge to manipulate the cationic defects in the catalyst because of their high formation energies. Herein, dual Zn and In defects have been successfully created in the ZnIn2S4 (ZIS-5) with a facile cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC)-assisted hydrothermal method. The resulting ZIS-5, rich in cation vacancies, achieved a 3.6-fold higher 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) yield (92.0%) than the pristine ZIS (25.8%) for the visible-light-driven photocatalytic air-oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). Especially, ZIS-5 delivers a high DFF productivity of 1600 μmol g–1 h–1, significantly surpassing the previously reported catalysts (75–953 μmol g–1 h–1) for the photocatalytic oxidation of HMF to DFF in air. Density functional theory (DFT) simulations revealed that the presence of dual Zn and In defects endows the catalyst with defect states that intersect the Fermi level and lower work function. These enhance the migration and separation of photogenerated carriers in ZIS-5, significantly promoting O2 activation and resulting in the generation of more reactive oxygen species (·O2– and 1O2) for the catalytic oxidation of HMF. This study offers valuable insights for guiding the design of photoredox reaction systems through cationic-defect-engineering strategies, enabling the efficient valorization of biomass-derived platform chemicals.

Synergy of sulfur vacancy and piezoelectric effect to tune charge migration in Sv-ZnIn2S4/UiO-66-NH2 for efficient photocatalytic H2 evolution

Ming Fang,Zhenfei Yang,Yang Guo,Shuqin Yuan,Xinnian Xia,Shuaijun Pan

High-performance photocatalytic H 2 evolution materials require strong light absorption capability, excellent photogenerated charge separation ability and efficient charge carrier migration capability. In this study, we designed a piezoelectric photocatalytic heterojunction composed of UiO-66-NH 2 and ZnIn 2 S 4 nanosheets with sulfur vacancies. The Sv-UZ-45 heterojunction achieved piezoelectric photocatalytic H 2 evolution performance of 3886.4 μmol·g -1 ·h -1 , with a 4.6 times enhancement due to the synergistic effect of piezoelectric effect and defect engineering. The introduction of sulfur vacancies enables the heterojunction to obtain stronger light absorption, while the higher CB position of rich-sulfur vacancies ZnIn 2 S 4 is more favorable for the photocatalytic reduction reaction. In addition, the heterojunction with rich-sulfur vacancies exhibits a stronger piezoelectric effect than without vacancies, thus providing a powerful driving force for the separation of photogenerated charge carriers. Finally, ESR was used to explain the potential photocatalytic mechanism and showed that Sv-UZ-45 adheres to the Z-scheme carrier migration pathway. This work elucidates the synergistic interaction between piezoelectric effect and defect engineering, providing new insights for the further development of high-performance piezoelectric photocatalysts.

Fabrication of Z-scheme ZnIn2S4–CdS heterojunction photocatalyst in-situ grown on novel graphene-based substrate for the photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI)

Yongming Zhong,Yangting Liao,Rongni Dou,Xiaolong Yu,Jin Tang,Hang Liu,Dan Liu,Yuming Fang,Yilun Luo,Jianteng Sun

The synthesis of novel film-like photocatalysts is an effective strategy for reducing Cr(VI). Herein, a Z-scheme ZnIn 2 S 4 –CdS heterojunction photocatalyst was fabricated on a self-assembled graphene-based substrate via hydrothermal and solvothermal methods. By controlling the ethanol:water ratio during solvothermal synthesis, differently sized CdS nanoparticles were grown on the ZnIn 2 S 4 nanosheets surface for regulating the photocatalytic activity of ZnIn 2 S 4 –CdS heterojunction. The three-dimensional layered structure of the graphene film provided abundant active sites for material loading and its excellent conductivity rapidly transferred photogenerated electrons. Compared to the ZnIn 2 S 4 –CdS heterojunction samples with other controlled structure, graphene-based film-like photocatalyst bring advantage in enrich photocatalysts for bursting out better activity. Under visible light irradiation, the synthesized RZC-40 sample exhibited a photocatalytic efficiency of 91.02% in photoreducing 20 mg L −1 Cr(VI) within 50 min, highlighting the feasibility and promising practical application prospects of synergistic film-like photocatalysts and laying a theoretical foundation for the further development of photocatalysts with improved activity.

Robust 2D/0D/2D MXene@TiO2/ZnIn2S4 ternary integrated heterojunction with efficient multi-interface charge transport and enhanced surface adsorption for gas sensing

Dehua Wang,Qixi Duan,Hai Sun,Jiahao Li,Zhenyu Zhu,Zhaolong Fang,Yanxing Yang,Yong Yang

MXene-based materials have received increasing attention in gas sensing due to their excellent electrical conductivity and favorable surface properties. However, their practical applications are severely limited by low sensitivity, limited selectivity and poor stability. In this study, a robust sandwich-like 2D/0D/2D MXene@TiO 2 /ZnIn 2 S 4 ternary integrated heterojunction is designed and constructed. The architecture effectively promotes charge transfer across multiple heterointerfaces (metal/semiconductor interface, semiconductor/semiconductor interface), enabling highly sensitive and selective detection of volatile organic compounds, particularly triethylamine. The MXene@TiO 2 /ZnIn 2 S 4 ternary integrated heterojunction exhibits a high response value of ∼48 (R a /R g ) toward 100 ppm triethylamine at 300 °C, along with excellent selectivity, fast response/recovery, low limit of detection (697.2 ppb), remarkable humidity tolerance and long-term stability over 110 days. It is found the efficient multi-interface charge transport channel and enhanced gas adsorption/oxidation characteristics of the MXene@TiO 2 /ZnIn 2 S 4 ternary integrated heterojunction contribute to the excellent gas sensing performance. Moreover, the construction of sandwich-like 2D/0D/2D hierarchical open structure not only greatly promotes the diffusion of gas molecules, but also enhances the stability of pristine MXene. This work not only offers a novel strategy to enhance the performance of MXene-based gas sensing materials, but also provides significant insight into charge transport mechanisms at muti-interfaces in resistive-type gas sensors.

S-scheme ZnIn2S4/α-Fe2O3 heterojunction with interfacial SO bonds accelerating the Fe3+/Fe2+ cycle for Photoelectro self-Fenton degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride

Yingying Chen,Zhihua Liu,Jinshan Liu,Miao Zhou,Zhifeng Liu

The visible-light-driven photoelectro-Fenton technology integrates the synergistic advantages of photoelectrocatalysis and the Fenton reaction. However, the design of current photoanode materials still suffers from issues such as low interfacial charge transfer efficiency and insufficient exposure of active sites. In this study, a novel S-scheme ZnIn 2 S 4 /α-Fe 2 O 3 heterojunction photoanode was successfully constructed. The built-in electric field established at the S-scheme heterointerface effectively facilitates the spatial separation of photogenerated charge carriers. The S O bonds formed at the two-phase interface serve as atomic-level electron transport channels, enabling rapid and directional transfer of photogenerated electrons enriched in the conduction band of ZnIn 2 S 4 to the Fe 3+ sites on the α-Fe 2 O 3 surface, where Fe 3+ is reduced to Fe 2+ . The generated Fe 2+ promotes the conversion of H 2 O 2 to produce hydroxyl radicals (·OH), while the regenerated Fe 3+ from the reaction is again reduced to Fe 2+ by photogenerated electrons, establishing a self-sustaining cycle that endows the system with highly efficient oxidative degradation capability. The results demonstrate that the synergistic mechanism leads to a 5.55-fold increase in the degradation rate. Benefiting from the efficient directional charge transfer and separation, the total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiency reaches 80.09% within 60 min.

Ternary photocatalysts based on MOF-derived TiO2 co-decorated with ZnIn2S4 nanosheets and CdS nanoparticles for effective visible light degradation of organic pollutants

Huan Liu,Jingzhe Li,Yue Chen,Xuting Sun,Xun Xu,Lingfang Qiu,Shuwang Duo,Ping Li

One of the feasible strategies to enhance the photocatalytic properties of TiO2 is to broaden the visible light response range and accelerate the separation rate of photo-induced electron–hole (e−–h+) pairs by designing and synthesizing heterostructures using narrow-band-gap semiconductors. In this study, a ternary heterostructure based on MOF-derived TiO2 was first fabricated via the self-sacrificing template method followed by a two-step chemical bath process. The as-obtained CdS/ZnIn2S4/TiO2 ternary heterostructures exhibited better visible-light photocatalytic properties for the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) and tetracycline (TC) than single-component and dual-component systems. Among the ternary heterostructures, it was found that the CdS/ZnIn2S4/TiO2-II showed the highest photoreactivity of 95.3% for RhB removal and 91.8% for TC removal within 40 min. In addition, CdS/ZnIn2S4/TiO2-II could maintain its photocatalytic properties during the stability test. The improvement in photocatalytic properties is attributed to the reasonable construction of a ternary heterostructure, which significantly accelerates the separation and transport of photogenerated e−–h+ pairs, improves the specific surface area, and broadens the visible light response range. This study demonstrates a promising strategy for developing ternary heterostructures as effective photocatalysts for the degradation of organic pollutants.

The roles of gold and silver nanoparticles on ZnIn2S4/silver (gold)/tetra(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin iron(III) chloride hybrids in carbon dioxide photoreduction

Pan Li,Xiaorui Jia,Jinping Zhang,Jieqiong Li,Jinqiang Zhang,Lijing Wang,Junmei Wang,Qingfeng Zhou,Wei Wei,Xiaoli Zhao,Shuaijun Wang,Hongqi Sun

The construction of hybrid catalysts composed of inorganic semiconductors and molecular catalysts shows great potential for achieving high photocatalytic carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) conversion efficiency. In this study, ZnIn 2 S 4 was first synthesized via a solvothermal route. Gold (Au) and silver (Ag) nanoparticles were then deposited on ZnIn 2 S 4 via the reduction of noble metal precursor by sulfur vacancy defects. The obtained composite was further combined with tetra(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin iron(III) chloride (FeTCPP) molecular catalyst for efficient photocatalytic CO 2 conversion. The roles of different noble metal nanoparticles in charge separation and interfacial electron transfer have been comprehensively studied. The photocatalytic performance and photoelectrochemical characterizations demonstrate that the introduction of Ag or Au nanoparticles is beneficial for charge separation. More importantly, the presence of Ag nanoparticles plays a crucial role in promoting the interfacial charge transfer between ZnIn 2 S 4 and FeTCPP, whereas, Au nanoparticles function as active sites for the water reduction reaction.

Construction of a recyclable dual-responsive TiO2-based photocatalyst modified with ZnIn2S4 nanosheets and zinc phthalocyanine for Cr(VI) reduction under visible light

Cong Liu,Yanhui Li,Xu Cui,Chen Liang,Gaojun Xing,Qian Duan

This study synthesized a recyclable dual-responsive core–shell photocatalyst Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @TiO 2 @ZnIn 2 S 4 /ZnPc   (FSTZP) used for hexavalent chromium (Cr   (VI)) reduction. Core-shell Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @TiO 2   (FST) was prepared and modified with ZnIn 2 S 4 and zinc-tetra   ( N -carbonylacrylic)   aminephthalocyanine (ZnPc) to obtain FSTZP and characterized by XRD, XPS, SEM, HRTEM and UV–vis DRS. In FSTZP, ZnIn 2 S 4 could provide more adsorption active sites and promote charge-carrier separation; ZnPc would efficiently use visible light to transfer energy. Both of ZnIn 2 S 4 and ZnPc in FSTZP could improve the light-harvesting resulting in excellent photocatalytic performance of FSTZP towards Cr   (VI) reduction and pollutant degradation. The highest reduction efficiency of Cr   (VI) by FSTZP   (0.3 g/L) was up to 96.4% in 60 min at pH = 6. The removal efficiencies of Rhodamine B (RhB), Methylene blue (MB), Methyl Orange   (MO) and Tetracycline hydrochloride   (TC•HCl) by FSTZP   (0.3 g/L) under visible light were 99%, 99%, 95% and 86% in 40 min at pH = 6. Meanwhile, almost all of Cr   (VI) and organic molecules in the coexistence system could be removed by FSTZP under visible light. FSTZP also presented the adsorption property and the mechanism of dual-responsive FSTZP for Cr   (VI) reduction and organic pollutants removal was explored. Moreover, as an efficient photocatalyst, FSTZP still maintained stability after reused for fourth photocatalytic cycle by magnetic recovery. This study was devoted to develop an efficient photocatalyst suitable for removing Cr   (VI) and organic pollutants.

Hydrothermal synthesis of 3D/2D heterojunctions of ZnIn2S4/oxygen doped g-C3N4 nanosheet for visible light driven photocatalysis of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid degradation

Ahmed Uddin,Tahir Muhmood,Zichang Guo,Jiayu Gu,Huan Chen,Fang Jiang

This study focused on the fabrication of a peculiar 3D/2D ZnIn 2 S 4 /oxygen-doped graphitic carbon nitride (ZnIn 2 S 4 /SO-GCN) through a simple hydrothermal method . The flower-like morphology of hexagonal ZnIn 2 S 4 disperse on the SO-GCN nanosheets are evidenced by XRD , scanning and transmission electron microscopy . The as-synthesized nanocomposites were intensively applied for the visible light photocatalytic removal of aqueous phase 2,4-D. The heterojunction creation and the well-developed combined interface between ZnIn 2 S 4 and SO-GCN significantly increases its photogenerated charge separation capability. The photo-degradation mechanism disclose that the heterojunction has improved catalytic degradation activity, due to efficient transferring of photogenerated electron-holes pairs. Under visible-light irradiation, these nanocomposites showed 3–5 times higher degradation rate of 2,4-D (i.e. 0.0112/min, by 30%-ZnIn 2 S 4 /SO-GCN), as compared to solo ZnIn 2 S 4 and SO-GCN, attributed to the composite’s synergistic effect in unique 3D/2D heterojunction, that accelerates the electron-hole separation. The h + and •OH species contribute a noteworthy role in the degradation process of 2,4-D over 30%-ZnIn 2 S 4 /SO-GCN. In addition, the synthesized nanocomposites sustained their reusability performance in five cyclic run. Our research have implications of constructing 3D/2D nanocomposites which is beneficial for scalable solution of efficient photocatalysts .

Robust hollow tubular ZnIn2S4 modified with embedded metal-organic-framework-layers: Extraordinarily high photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity under simulated and real sunlight irradiation

Quan Zhang,Huajun Gu,Xiaohao Wang,Lingfeng Li,Juhua Zhang,Huihui Zhang,Ye-Fei Li,Wei-Lin Dai

This work reported a facile one-step method for constructing hollow tubular ZnIn 2 S 4 modified by metal-organic-framework-layers (MOFL) with In-MOF as precursor to be efficient photocatalysts (ZnIn 2 S 4 -MOFL) for robust photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE). The dominant catalyst of ZnIn 2 S 4 and cocatalytic role of MOFL synergistically promoted the separation of electron and hole pairs due to the direct Z-scheme photocatalytic system, leading to an extraordinarily high PHE activity. The density functional theory (DFT) results revealed the remarkably decreased density of states (DOS) of ZnIn 2 S 4 after coupling with the organic ligands of MOFL, indeed proving an effectively suppressed recombination of charge carriers and benefited the performance of photocatalytic reactions. Experimental PHE results showed that a large number of hydrogen bubbles were visible to naked eyes and the optimal hydrogen evolution reached 28.2 mmol/g/h, the highest value reported so far among ZnIn 2 S 4 -based photocatalysts, and almost 14.8 times higher than that of pristine ZnIn 2 S 4 . More importantly, the superior apparent quantum efficiencies (AQEs) of 22.67 % at monochromatic light (350 nm) and the stable hydrogen generation capability (5.7 mmol/g/h) under real sunlight irradiation all confirmed a promising catalyst of ZnIn 2 S 4 -MOFL for hydrogen evolution applications.
