Accelerating the charge separation efficiency is a crucial approach to improve the photocatalytic performance of semiconductors. The design and synthesis of heterojunctions can effectively inhibit the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and enhance the charge separation efficiency. In this work, an easy-handling calcination route was proposed to prepare CdS/ZnS heterojunction loaded on honeycomb-like porous carbon (CZS@C) using chitosan as a precursor. The unique honeycomb-like porous structure facilitated the separation and migration of photoexcited electrons and holes, improving the utilization of visible light and shortening the distance of electron transport. The photocatalytic performance of CZS@C was evaluated by the degradation of tetracycline (TC) and H 2 production from water splitting under visible light. The optimized CZS@C composite can degrade almost 92.40 % of TC under visible light irradiation in 60 min. Such CZS@C composite presented an excellent photocatalytic activity with H 2 production rate of 5.49 mmol h −1 g −1 , which was 54.9 and 2.28-folds higher than ZnS@C and CdS@C. Furthermore, the possible photocatalytic reaction mechanism and pathway towards TC degradation and simultaneous H 2 generation was proposed.

An ultrasensitive and selective sandwich-type fluorescent immunosensor based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) and Au nanorods (AuNRs) was developed for the rapid detection of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV). Modified CdSe/ZnS QDs and AuNRs were bioconjugated with primary antibodies M and GP5, respectively. When the target antigen was present, a well-known sandwich-type form CdSe/ZnS QDs-M antibody-antigen-GP5 antibody-AuNRs was produced, and thus reducing the distance between the QDs and NRs. As a result, FRET occurred and the fluorescence intensity of CdSe/ZnS QDs decreased, and this decrease was used to determine the antigen concentration. Ultrasensitive detection of PRRSV at low concentrations in swine serum was achieved with a limit of detection of 0.55 TCID 50 /mL and a linear detection range of 10 1 –3.5 × 10 4 TCID 50 /mL. Therefore, the fluorescent immunosensor is selective and highly sensitive; specifically, it can detect PRRSV at low concentrations in swine serum over a large concentration range. This proposed detection method can facilitate the development of high-performance fluorescent immunosensors for the detection of PRRSV and other antigens.

CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) and 3,3,5,5-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) were incorporated into a filter paper to produce a paper-based colorimetric device for Hg 2+ detection. Under visible light, the CdSe/ZnS QDs acted as a photocatalyst to oxidize TMB, resulting in blue colorization on the paper. Moreover, Hg 2+ could enhance the photocatalytic activity of CdSe/ZnS QDs and consequently caused an increase in the color intensity of the paper. The color change of the paper-based device can be directly identified by naked-eye observation or captured by a smartphone and analyzed using image processing software for quantitative analysis. Under optimal conditions, a low detection limit of 0.09 µM was achieved. This device was applied for real samples, including tap water and cosmetics, and achieved satisfying results.

Nano-light materials have attracted great interest in materials research due to their excellent fluorescent properties. The hybrid assembly of various nano-optical materials combines their advantages, extending the scope of potential applications. Herein, we report a fluorescence organic–inorganic hybrid nanostructure (T-PNI@QDs) based on binding red-emitting CdTe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) to blue-emitting aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-active polymeric micelles in aqueous media with dual-channel emission. The AIE-active polymeric micelles were obtained by the self-assembly of thiol-terminated tetraphenylethylene (TPE) functionalized poly(N-isopropylmethacylamide) (T-PNI-SH) in water. An interesting assembly behaviour of transformation from a worm-like to a core–shell structure was observed by controlling the ratio of QDs/polymers due to the coordinated interaction between the QDs and the thiol groups. The dual-emission of T-PNI@QDs has obvious temperature-sensitive behaviour on account of PNIPAM. The novel fluorescent hybrid nanostructure was used as a probe to selectively detect picric acid (PA) in pure water. We expect this work will open up a new perspective for the construction of organic–inorganic hybrids based on different nano-light materials.

Zinc Oxide (ZnO) has been extensively applied as electron transport material (ETM) in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) since the emergence of PSCs. However, some chemisorbed oxygen species on the surface of ZnO can cause the degradation of CH 3 NH 3 + (MA + ) based perovskite. To avoid the destructive effect of ZnO, a facile solution strategy was proposed to produce a ZnS shell around the ZnO nanorods arrays (ZnO-NRs), i. e. ZnO@ZnS core–shell nanorods (ZnO-NRs@ZnS). The ZnO-NRs@ZnS cascade structure can not only facilitate carrier transport, but also enhance the stability of ZnO based PSCs. A power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 20.6% was finally yielded, which is the-state-of-the-art efficiency for PSCs with one-dimensional (1D) ZnO electron transport materials (ETMs). Moreover, over 90% of the initial efficiency was retained for the unencapsulated device with ZnO-NRs@ZnS ETMs at 85 °C for 500 h, demonstrating excellent stability. This work provides a simple and efficient avenue to simultaneously enhance the photovoltaic (PV) performance and stability of 1D ZnO nanostructure-based PSCs.

In this paper, three kinds of ZnS NPs capping different amount of mercaptoethanol (ME) were synthesized, and the effect of capping amount on ZnS NPs was studied, indicating that the capping amount of ME on ZnS surface decreases, while ZnS size increases as the decrease of added capping agent in synthesis process, and ZnS NP capping middle amount of ME (~27.7 wt%) shows a highest apparent refractive index (RI) value. ZnS NPs were composited into polymeric matrices by a simple “one-step” thermocuring method characterized by adding a small amount of functional monomer of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and solvent of N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) The reaction mechanism, studied by 1H NMR spectra, indicates that the epoxy of GMA monomer can be easily opened and chemically grafted on ME-capped ZnS surface under the catalysis of DMF, and then copolymerized with other monomer. By the route, ZnS NPs can be composited into pure poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide)-type (DMA-type), DMA-type copolymer, and DMA-free matrices to fabricate transparent films, and its RI value can be improved by either optimizing capping amount on ZnS surface or increasing ZnS content in the nanocomposites. The RI value of resulting dried nanocomposites can be improved to 1.764 by compositing 80 wt% ZnS capping middle amount of ME.

Exploring electrocatalysts with low cost and excellent performance for oxygen reduction reaction is still a significant challenge. In this paper, we introduce a novel strategy to fabricate ZnS, Fe, and P co-doped N enriched carbon (ZnFeSP/NC) via the direct carbonization of PVP/ZIF-8 combined with absorption, sulphurization , and phosphorization processes. The as-synthesized ZnFeSP/NC was used as electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). We explored the influence of Fe, S, and P elements on the ORR activity of the catalysts. It can be found that ZnS nanoparticles were formed and attached on the surface of the ZnFeSP/NC nanoparticles. α-Fe and P element were well dispersed on ZnFeSP/NC nanoparticles. Fe, S, and P element can highly enhance the ORR activity of the catalysts. Compared to Zn/NC, ZnFe/NC, and ZnFeS/CN, ZnFeSP/NC shows the optimal ORR performance with the half-wave potential of 0.859 V and a current density of 3.33 mA cm −2 at −0.85 V. Furthermore, ZnFeSP/NC also exhibits excellent long-term operation stability, effectively avoiding any ORR performance decay.

In this work, a new application of Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots (Mn-ZnS QDs) was developed to screen chloramphenicol (CAP) and tetracycline (TC) residues simply and rapidly. Mn-ZnS QDs synthesized by a hydration method and modified by L-cysteine for better stability emit phosphorescence at 583 nm with the excitation wavelength at 289 nm. Based on the overlap of the Mn-ZnS QDs excitation spectra and CAP or TCs ultraviolet spectra, the excited light of the Mn-ZnS QDs was partially absorbed by CAP or TCs owing to the inner-filter effect (IFE), leading to a decrease in the phosphorescence intensity. The phosphorescence intensities of the samples prepared by mixing different TCs and CAP were in good agreement with the expected results from adding a single antibiotic sample. Therefore, the total molar concentrations of CAP and TCs could be screened based on the linear equation of a single standard substance. Represented by tetracycline (TC), as a member of the tetracycline family, under optimized conditions, showed a good linear relational concentration range over 4 orders of magnitude from 50 to 1.5 × 105 nM with a limit of detection (LOD; S/N ratio = 3) down to 8.6 nM. The phosphorescent sensor was also used to detect total TCs in actual samples successfully. The evaluations of the recovery rate and selectivity were good. These results demonstrated that the presented phosphorescent sensor can be a simple and rapid screening platform for CAP and TCs.

In this study, an efficient green light-emitting CuInS 2 /ZnS core/shell quantum dots were synthesized using a low temperature (130 °C) hot injection methods combined with multi-layers ZnS coating strategy. S-OAm (S powder dissolved in oleylamine) was used as sulfur source instead of conventional dodecanethiol, which supplied high concentration of H 2 S at low temperature and led to explosive nucleation of CuInS 2 and hence high concentration small size of CIS cores. Meanwhile, this method could supply enough sulfur sources for the ZnS coating process , resulting in high quality ZnCuInS 2 alloyed interface and ZnS surface coating layers, which led to excellent lattice match between the CuInS 2 core and ZnS shells, and better surface passivation . As the consequence, a maximum photoluminescence quantum yields of ∼85% at peak wavelength of ∼530 nm has been achieved. Based on this, the light emitting diodes with a maximum luminance of 4450 cd m −2 , luminous efficiency of 3.52 cd A −1 and an external quantum efficiency of 1.44% has been obtained, which is the best result so far for the green emission light emitting diodes based on the CuInS 2 quantum dots.

A novel composite membrane was prepared successfully by blending polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) with the synthesized graphene oxide-zinc sulfide (GO-ZnS) nanocomposites via phase inversion method. The dispersion of GO-ZnS and its effect on the performance of the PVDF membrane were investigated using the morphology, crystal structure and chemical composition of the composite PVDF membrane. With the content of GO-ZnS in the PVDF membrane increasing from 0 to 5.0 wt%, the contact angle declined continuously and thus the hydrophilicity of membrane increased after modification. Similarly, the pure water flux of GO-ZnS/PVDF membrane reached up to 431.9 L/(m 2 h) when 5.0 wt% GO-ZnS was blended. All membranes presented a high bovine serum albumin (BSA) removal and the rejection was about 86.5%. More importantly, the GO-ZnS/PVDF membrane exhibited a smaller irreversible fouling ratio and a higher flux recovery rate, revealing that blending with GO-ZnS could improve the self-cleaning under UV irradiation and the antifouling properties of PVDF membrane.

Graphical Approaching a junction : A monolithic photomembrane by the judicious integration of ZnS/CdS heterojunction nanorods and multilayer graphene sheets has been fabricated and used as monolithic photocatalyst or a freestanding photoanode for efficient hydrogen evolution. Its outstanding performance can be attributed to the efficient charge separation/transfer brought by its unique structural characteristics. Highly efficient and easy recyclable monolithic photocatalysts with ideal separation/transport route for photogenerated charge carriers are much desired. In this work, a ZnO seed-induced growth approach is developed to fabricate a ternary monolithic photomembrane, that is, ZnS/CdS heterojunction nanorods in situ grow into the interspaces of multilayer reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheets (denoted as ZnS/CdS/rGO). The monolithic ZnS/CdS/rGO photomembrane can serve as an efficient visible-light photoactive membrane for photocatalytic (PC) or photoelectrochemical (PEC) hydrogen generation. The fast electron transport of 1D CdS nanorods, the excellent electronic conductivity of multilayer stacked rGO sheets, the intense visible-light absorption of CdS, the unique hierarchical structure, and double heterojunctions (ZnS/CdS and CdS/rGO) efficiently boost the photogenerated electron-hole pairs separation and transfer across the interfacial domain of the photomembrane under visible-light irradiation. Furthermore, the superior stability and reusability of the photomembrane is achieved by the ideal process of photogenerated electron-hole pair separation/transfer, i.e., holes transfer to ZnS and electrons transfer to rGO to inhibit CdS from photocorrosion.

An immunoassay is described for either colorimetric and fluorometric determination of the cancer biomarker α-fetoprotein (AFP). It is making use of ZnS nanospheres modified with CdTe quantum dots (QDs). These display strong fluorescence due to the enrichment of the QDs onto the porous ZnS nanospheres. In this assay, the release of millions of zinc(II) ions can be triggered to form a purple complex (with an absorption maximum at 571 nm) on addition of the reagent 2-(5-nitro-2-pyridylazo)-5-(N-propyl-N-sulfopropylamino) phenol. This results in a sensitive colorimetric immunoassay which can also be used as a visual test. It represents an enzyme-free alternative to the commonly used ELISAs. It also can be evaluated by fluorometry (with excitation/emission maxima at 400/645 nm). The detection limits are 10 pg·mL −1 for fluorometry and 7 pg·mL −1 for colorimetry. This sensitivity is better by one order of magnitude than that of the commercial ELISA. The dual detection feature provides good complementarity and reduces the risk of false-positive or false-negative results.
