Development of multifunctional quaternary ammonium cellulose coating for fruit preservation

Yajie Li,Nan Huang,Ying Sun,Kaidi Peng,Ting Min,Xueyu Jiang,Yang Yi

Due to the lack of preservation technology and cold chain logistics, the decay loss rate of fruits and vegetables is surprisingly high. To meet the demands of environmental protection and food preservation, sustainable coating materials that fabricated by biowaste to wealth approach can efficiently cover the challenges. Hence, quaternary ammonium lotus root residue celluloses (QACs) were homogeneously synthesized by reacting cellulose with 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride for 24 h. In terms of the chemical structure, morphology, rheological property and biocompatibility as well as antimicrobial ability, QACs were characterized. The antibacterial mechanism was investigated at cellular level via disruption of membrane integrity, metabolic inactivation, destruction of antioxidant system. Meanwhile, due to the nature source of cellulose, QACs exhibited inherent outstanding biocompatibility. QACs could extend preservation time of strawberry for least 3 d by decreasing the weight loss and maintaining the hardness and springiness, as well as inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria. The residual amount of QACs coating on the surface of strawberries was <0.1 mg kg −1 , featuring with easy cleaning and safety. This biowaste-derived coating for strawberry preservation not only provides a new strategy for fruit preservation platforms but also expands the high-value application of biowaste resources in the agro-industry.

Cellulose-reinforced highly stretchable and adhesive eutectogels as efficient sensors

Yufang Wu,Xiong-Fei Zhang,Yunhua Bai,Mengjiao Yu,Jianfeng Yao

A cellulose-reinforced eutectogel was constructed by deep eutectic solvent (DES) and cotton linter cellulose. Cellulose was dispersed in the ternary DES consisting of acrylic acid, choline chloride and AlCl 3 ·6H 2 O. The photoinitiator was then introduced into the system to in situ polymerize acrylic acid monomer to form transparent and ionic conductive eutectogels while keeping all the DES. The crosslinks formed by Al 3+ induced ionic bonds and reversible links formed by hydrogen bonds give the eutectogels high stretchability (3200 ± 200 % tensile strain), self-adhesive (52.1 kPa to glass), self-healing and good mechanical strength (670 kPa). The eutectogels were assembled into sensors and epidermal patch electrodes that demonstrated high quality human motion sensing and physiological signal detection (electrocardiogram and electromyography). This work provides a facile way to design flexible electronics for sensing.

Cellulose-based multi-responsive soft robots for programmable smart devices

Yinan Li,Chenglong Fu,Liulian Huang,Lihui Chen,Yonghao Ni,Qinghong Zheng

In the realm of advanced smart manufacturing, the development of fast, sensitive, stable soft robots that can be driven by multiple stimuli remains a significant challenge. In this study, we developed a cellulose-based soft robot featuring a dual-layer structure. The top layer is a hydrophilic composite membrane made from cellulose nanofibers (CNFs), MXene nanosheets, and carbon nanotubes (CNTs), henceforth referred to as the CNF@MXene-CNT (CMN) composite membrane, while the bottom layer consists of a hydrophobic Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene (BOPP) membrane. The soft robot exhibits highly sensitive and fast response towards humidity-, natural light and electrothermal stimuli, which can be attributed to the high humidity expansion (0.0005 (%RH) -1 ), photothermal conversion, and electrical thermal conversion of CMN composite membrane, also the distinctive expansion characteristics of CMN (−0.000757 °C −1 ) and BOPP (0.000137 (°C) -1 ). Remarkably, the soft robot can be actuated with merely 67 mW cm −2 of natural light or a power supply of 2.8 V, achieving a bending range of 360° with a corresponding bending curvature of 2.67 cm −1 . The soft robot’s motion state and speed can be meticulously controlled, further emphasizing their vast applicability in various fields, including medical, industrial, aerospace, and beyond. The soft robot has been applied as a smart curtain, intelligent optical switch, and electrically controlled robot, demonstrating its exceptional multifunctionality and wide ranges of applications.

Biodegradable cellulose scaffolds embedding kartogenin-loaded microspheres for cartilage regeneration

Xinding Yu,Jian Wang,Shenglai Zhou,Peng Pan,Tiantian Chen,Xi Wang,Wentao Liu

Due to the extreme difficulty of cartilage, we endeavored to fabricate a novel biodegradable scaffold using natural polysaccharide cellulose and poly(lactic- co -glycolic acid) (PLGA) microspheres incorporating controllably released the cartilage inducer kartogenin (KGN) for enhancing regenerative healing in cartilage tissue. Initially, to facilitate the loading of KGN, PLGA/KGN microspheres were fabricated using the solvent volatilization method. These microspheres exhibited high sphericity, with particle sizes diminishing from 12.11 to 3.27 μm as the emulsification rate increased. Demonstrating adequate encapsulation efficiency, the microspheres enabled controlled drug release, positively influencing cell migration and recruitment. Subsequently, a biodegradable cellulose composite scaffold loaded with PLGA/KGN microspheres was prepared using the freeze-drying method. Compared with pure MCC scaffolds, composite scaffolds had a lower degradation rate, and the incorporation of microspheres promoted cell proliferation and significantly elevated expression of cartilage-related specific genes. In a rat cartilage defect model, it was further demonstrated that the composite scaffold combined with stem cell implantation achieved an optimal repair effect, characterized by vigorous extracellular matrix secretion and increased maturity of the regenerated cartilage tissues, suggesting potential clinical application value as a novel articular cartilage repair product in the future.

Bonding Wood via Cellulose Aqueous Solution as Cell Wall Adhesive

Zhonglei Huang,Zhiru Cao,Dafang Huang,Suiyi Li,Mingwei Zhu,Yanfeng Chen

The size of the wood plays a crucial role in determining its ultimate application. In order to break through the dimensions of natural wood, multiple pieces of wood are often bonded together with adhesives to form larger sizes. The physical and chemical properties of adhesives are different from those of natural wood, and this difference often leads to failure of the adhesive bonding interface. Herein, an aqueous solution of dissolved cellulose has been used as an adhesive to bond wood. The regenerated cellulose produced by recrystallization combines the wood fibers that originally existed on the wood surface cell wall. The resulting bonding wood interface consists of densely packed regenerated cellulose and wood cellulose fibers, which possess strong hydrogen bonds and physical entanglements. The shear strength has surpassed those of typical bio-based adhesives and commercial adhesives. The same composition as natural wood endows this bonding interface with physical and chemical properties similar to natural wood such as weatherability. Bonding wood with this cellulose aqueous solution as an adhesive reduces the dependence on petrochemical-based adhesives, and this facile and pressureless bonding strategy offers a promising route to manufacture sustainable wood composites with robust bonding interfaces.

Bionic silanized cellulose superhydrophobic paper for efficient oil-water separation

Shenghui Ning,Guangyi Tian,Fuchao Yang

With the frequent occurrence of oil spill accidents and the increasing discharge of industrial oily wastewater, oil–water separation has become a global challenge to protect the ecological environment. Simple, fluorine-free preparation of high-throughput superhydrophobic materials is important for realizing efficient separation of oil/water mixtures. Paper-based materials have several advantages, such as low price and renewability, which make them valuable for applications. In this work, we propose a simple and economical two-part immersion technique to prepare superhydrophobic cellulose paper, which is modified with octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) directly and then assembled hydrophobic silica. The prepared functionalized paper is not only superhydrophobic (static water contact angle up to 157°) and superoleophilic, but also exhibits acid and alkali resistance and abrasion cycle resistance. After 10 separation cycles for a variety of heavy oil/water mixtures, the separation efficiency was as high as 99.31 % with fluxes greater than 5100 L/(m 2 ·h). This simple, scalable, low-cost superhydrophobic paper shows great potential in the field of oil/water separation.

A Cellulose Salt Gel with Mechanical Transformation and Thermal Control

Yifan Liu,Jiazuo Zhou,Yudong Li,Xiaohan Sun,Ziyao Wang,Haiyue Yang,Chengyu Wang

Gels as compelling soft material shows its promising versatility in actuators, soft electronics, and biomedical sensors. However, most gel materials are too rigid to cope with long-term changing scenarios and specific needs. Inspired by the switchable behavior of bio-behavior of muscle, the study reports a thermodynamically controllable and stiffness-transformative cellulose-salt gel by simple thermal mixing of hydrous salt, cellulose nanofiber, and polyacrylamide. The achieved cellulosic gel with dynamic microstructure presents an amazing stiffness switchability between crystalline state and melted states of 32.38 to 0.02 MPa, as well as the regulable light transmittance between 41.59% and 93.43%. In addition, this cellulose-salt gel has excellent thermal controllable behavior. That is, by controlling the crystallization process, the cellulose-salt gel displays the start-stop releasing-energy behaviors on demand. Enabled by these outstanding properties, the study further demonstrates the promising application of cellulose-salt gel in controllable soft-rigid coupling thermoelectric device, showing the broader implications for wearable electronics aiming at on-demand work.

Efficient acid-catalyzed hydrolysis of cellulose in organic electrolyte solutions

Zehui Zhang,Bing Liu,Zongbao (Kent) Zhao

A novel method for cellulose hydrolysis catalyzed by mineral acids have been developed in organic electrolyte solutions at 70 °C under atmosphere pressure without pretreatment. Several reaction parameters including reaction time, temperature, catalyst loading and the ratio of ionic liquids to organic solvents have been evaluated and optimized. Under optimal conditions, the maximum total reducing sugars (TRS) yield in 68.8% and glucose yield in 39.2% were obtained in 1.0 g NMP/3.0 g [Bmim]Cl system at 70 °C. Due to the low temperature of cellulose hydrolysis, this method shows a promising potential as an energy-efficient and cost-effective approach for the biorefinery of lignocellulosic biomass.

Synthesis and hplc chiral recognition of regioselectively carbamoylated cellulose derivatives

Shouwan Tang,Xiaofang Li,Fang Wang,Guihua Liu,Yonglong Li,Fuyou Pan

Four regioselective-carbamoylated cellulose derivatives having two different substituents at 2-, 3-, and 6-position were prepared and evaluated as chiral stationary phases (CSPs) for high-performance liquid chromatography. Investigations showed that the nature andarrangement of the substituents significantly influenced the chiral recognition abilities of the heterosubstituted cellulose derivatives and each derivative exhibited characteristic enantioseparation. Some racemates were better resolved on these derivatives than the corresponding homogeneously substituted cellulose derivatives including a commercial CSP, Chiralcel OD. Racemic compounds shown in this study were most effectively discriminated on cellulose2,3-(3-chloro-4-methylphenylcarbamate)-6-(3,5-dimethylphenylcarbamate) and 2,3-(3,5-dimethylphenylcarbamate)-6-(3-chloro-4-methylphenylcarbamate). Preparation of amino cellulose aerogel and its formaldehyde adsorption properties

Jianxi Song,Zhongzheng Liu,Yaning Li,Chuanxi Chi,Yang Zhang,Guiquan Jiang

The aerogel prepared from cellulose has the advantages of low density, high porosity, large specific surface area, good gas diffusion and adsorption space, which is a good gas adsorption material. In this study, microcrystalline cellulose was used as raw material, and LiBr ionic liquid was used as a solvent system. In addition, cellulose aerogel was modified by polyethyleneimine , which retained three-dimensional network structure and had excellent formaldehyde adsorption capacity. The adsorption capacity of polyethyleneimine-modified cellulose aerogel (PCA) to formaldehyde can reach 12.3 mg/g at 25 ℃. It was found that the adsorption capacity of PCA aerogel for formaldehyde changed with the increase in nitrogen content. The adsorption of formaldehyde was mainly through the chemical adsorption of the Schiff base reaction between NH 2 and formaldehyde molecules in polyethylenimine (PEI).

Preparation of bacterial cellulose-based Janus fibers with photothermal deformation

Cao Hui,Cheng Zhenyu,Liu Jianan,Zhao Zhenzhen,Zhang Jincheng,Dai Manman,Cheng Lu,Wang Ying,Xia Xin,Ke Huizhen,Zhou Huimin

Flexible intelligent response devices are fabricated using several matrix materials. Among these, bacterial cellulose (BC) exhibits higher crystalline characteristics along with a higher degree of polymerization, elastic modulus, tensile strength, and water absorption. In this study, to further increase the response of fiber-based materials and expand their wearable applications, BC-based Janus fibers are prepared via wet spinning and used as fibrous intelligent response materials driven under photothermal stimulation. The BC-based Janus fibers exhibited excellent photothermal response with hydrophilic graphene oxide (GO)/BC as the actuation layer and hydrophobic graphene/BC as the supporting layer. When an infrared light was used to stimulate the GO side, the resulting dehydration and contraction of the GO side drove deformation. When the infrared stimulus was removed, the BC and GO quickly absorbed water and expanded owing to their favorable water-absorption properties. The material recovered its original straight shape, achieving reversible deformation. The experiment showed that the fibers prepared with 35 wt% GO and 100 wt% graphene exhibited a superior photothermal actuation performance compared to the BC fibers, GO/BC fibers, and graphene/BC fibers. When the actuation layer was exposed to infrared light for 27 s, the fibers started to bend upward along the illuminated section. After 55 s of exposure, the bending angle reached 135°. After the infrared light was turned off, the bent fibers returned to their original straight shape.

Synthesis of Bulky Cellulose Derivatives for Efficient Enantioselective Fluorescent Sensing

Wang Weiqi,Wang Fan,Wang Yuqing,Zhang Lili,Okamoto Yoshio,Shen Jun

Four cellulose derivatives bearing benzothienyl or carbazolyl fluorophore pendants were successfully synthesized through carbamoylation followed by Steglich esterification or only esterification process, respectively. The enantioselective fluorescent sensing properties of the obtained derivatives were then evaluated using eight chiral substrates, including chiral aromatic amines and chiral amino alcohol-based drug intermediates. The four bulky host macromolecules exhibited good enantioselective fluorescence response to most of the tested guests with high enantioselectivity and sensitivity. Especially, a high enantiomeric fluorescence difference ratio ( ef  = 37.16) was achieved on cellulose tris(2-benzothienylformate) ( Cel - 3 ) for the α-methylbenzylamine ( Q2 ), an important chiral agricultural drug intermediate. Worthy to be mentioned, an interesting opposite fluorescence response and a dual fluorescence enhancement pattern were also observed on the benzothienyl derivative Cel - 3 for the enantiomer pairs of 1-(4-methoxyphenyl) ethylamine ( Q3 ) and phenylglycinol ( Q6 ), a critical intermediate for chiral drug as an antilipemic agent in high demand, respectively. It indicated that the bulky Cel - 3 possessed excellent enantioselective fluorescent sensing properties to the chiral aromatic amine and amino alcohols, revealing good potential as efficient chiral fluorescent sensors. It was speculated that a beneficial chiral domain may be constructed by the appropriate arrangement of bulky conjugated benzothienyl or carbazolyl pendants on the phenylcarbamates or esters surrounding the helical backbone of cellulose, which was crucial for the efficient chiral fluorescent sensing performance. The introduction of bulky fluorophore pendants on the cellulose phenylcarbamates or esters presents an efficient strategy to produce effective chiral fluorescent recognition materials.
