Active pharmaceutical ingredients are routinely formulated with a range of excipients in the manufacture of drug products. Excipients are considered to be inert components of the formulations, although recent research has contested its inactive behaviour. This study investigated the effect of the excipient polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG 400) on the oral bioavailability and intestinal permeability of cimetidine in male and female human volunteers. Aqueous solutions of cimetidine with pharmaceutically relevant concentrations of PEG 400 at 0% w/v (control), 0.3% w/v, 0.5% w/v, 0.7% w/v and 1.0% w/v were orally administered to both sexes. Urine samples were then collected and assayed for the determination of cimetidine which reflected oral bioavailability. This human study showed that PEG 400 at 0.3% w/v, 0.5% w/v and 0.7% w/v concentrations significantly increased cimetidine bioavailability by 34%, 58% and 41% respectively, although this enhancement was only demonstrated in men and not women (p < 0.05). Ussing chamber transport studies with male human jejunal tissues revealed that cimetidine permeability increased by 26%, 48% and 29% with PEG 400 at 0.3% w/v, 0.5% w/v and 0.7% w/v respectively (p < 0.05). No such enhancement was demonstrated in female tissues (p > 0.05). We have shown that PEG 400 interacts with intestinal P-glycoprotein (P-gp) expression differently in males and females. The mechanistic action of PEG 400 at gut level was further investigated on human jejunal tissues following the pre-treatment of the P-gp inhibitor PSC 833 (valspodar) on the transport of cimetidine. When intestinal P-gp was inhibited, the sex- and dose-dependent modulatory effect of PEG 400 with cimetidine was completely eradicated, thus confirming that PEG 400 has a modulatory – rather than inhibitory – effect on P-gp. In sum, the widely used excipient PEG 400 is not inert at pharmaceutically relevant concentrations and its modulatory effect is demonstrated at a human clinical level. Such pharmacological effects, however, are sex- and dose-dependent via its modulation on intestinal P-gp, as evidenced by the boost in cimetidine bioavailability only in male human volunteers. As such, these findings should be carefully considered towards the co-formulation of PEG 400 with drugs that are P-gp substrates.

Among the Cu(II) removal methods, adsorption is a favorable technique and has attracted large attention because of its effectiveness and low cost. In quest of seeking for a favorable adsorbent with a high Cu(II) adsorption capacity and excellent reusability, researchers have paid much attention to hydrogels with three-dimensional networks. In this study, a novel hydrogel (P(AMPS-co-VDT) hydrogel) based on free-radical polymerization was synthesized with ionic monomer sodium 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfate (AMPS-Na + ) and 2-vinyl-4, 6-diamino-1, 3, 5-triazine (VDT) and applied for Cu(II) adsorption in aqueous solutions. The hydrogel was characterized for swelling performance, surface morphology, functional groups, thermal gravimetric behavior, and elements. The maximum Cu(II) adsorption capacity (175.75 mg/g) was relatively high compared with other hydrogels. The P(AMPS-co-VDT) hydrogel also was found to have a relatively good Cu(II) desorption and reuse behavior. The adsorption mechanism could be chelation and ion exchange. This work provides a new hydrogel for effective Cu(II) removal in the future.

TiO2-based ultraviolet photodetectors have drawn great attention and are intensively explored. However, the construction of TiO2-based nanocomposites with excellent ultraviolet responses remains challenging. Herein, a TiO2nanorod array was successfully prepared on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) conductive glass by a one-step hydrothermal method. Then, polypyrrole (PPy)-TiO2nanorod array composites were designed via subsequent in situ oxidative polymerization. The morphologies, structures, and photocurrent responses of the nanocomposites were systematically investigated. The results demonstrated that polypyrrole-TiO2exhibited a stronger photocurrent response than pure TiO2due to the p-n junction formed between n-type TiO2nanorod arrays and p-type polypyrrole. The PPy-TiO2composite obtained by deposition three times had the best photoelectric properties, exhibiting good performance with a sensitivity of 41.7 and responsivity of 3.5 × 10−3A/W. Finally, the mechanism of the photoelectrical response of PPy-TiO2composites was discussed, guiding the design of high-performance TiO2-based ultraviolet photodetectors. Keywords:titanium oxide;ultraviolet photodetectors;polypyrrole;nanocomposites;p-n junction

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) belong to a subgroup of two-dimensional (2D) materials which usually possess thickness-dependent band structures and semiconducting properties. Therefore, for TMDCs to be widely used in electronic and optoelectronic applications, two critical issues need to be addressed, which are thickness-controllable fabrication and doping modulation of TMDCs. In this work, we successfully obtained monolayer WS2 and achieved its efficient doping by chemical vapor deposition and chemical doping, respectively. The n- and p-type dopings of the monolayer WS2 were achieved by drop coating electron donor and acceptor solutions of triphenylphosphine (PPh3) and gold chloride (AuCl3), respectively, on the surface, which donates and captures electrons to/from the WS2 surface through charge transfer, respectively. Both doping effects were investigated in terms of the electrical properties of the fabricated field effect transistors. After chemical doping, the calculated mobility and density of electrons/holes are around 74.6/39.5 cm2·V−1·s−1 and 1.0 × 1012/4.2 × 1011 cm−2, respectively. Moreover, we fabricated a lateral WS2 p–n homojunction consisting of non-doped n-type and p-doped p-type regions, which showed great potential for photodetection with a response time of 1.5 s and responsivity of 5.8 A/W at VG = 0 V and VD = 1 V under 532 nm light illumination.

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) have recently emerged as a promising candidate for large-scale energy storage applications, primarily due to their nonflammable nature, low production costs, and satisfactory specific energy. Nevertheless, their cycle stability is significantly limited by the inevitable formation of Zn dendrites and undesirable water-induced parasitic reactions. To tackle these challenges, a porous poly(p-aminoazobenzene) (PPAAB) interfacial protective layer is developed for regulating the transport and deposition behavior of Zn 2+ ions. The engineered PPAAB coating, functionalized with polar moieties ( NH and N ), exhibits strong hydrophilic characteristics that enable controlled Zn 2+ ion flux and deposition behavior via a selective ion-confinement mechanism. Consequently, the Zn@PPAAB anode exhibits improved interfacial dynamics and a low nucleation overpotential, demonstrating stable plating/stripping behavior. When paired with a NaV 3 O 8 (NVO) cathode, the NVO||PPAAB@Zn cell showcases impressive capacity retention, maintaining 84% of its capacity after 1100 cycles at 1.0 A g −1 . This study not only advances accessible interface engineering but also provides deeper mechanistic insights into Zn anode behavior, paving the way for enhanced AZIBs. Graphical A porous poly(p-aminoazobenzene) (PPAAB) protective layer functionalized with polar groups ( NH and N ) is engineered to regulate Zn 2+ flux, suppress dendrite growth, and inhibit side reactions, achieving highly stable and reversible zinc metal anodes for advanced aqueous batteries.

Generation of environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) on solid particles has recently attracted increasing research interest. EPFRs potentially have high reactivity and toxicity. However, the impact of EPFRs on organic contaminant behavior is unclear. We hypothesized that EPFRs in biochars can degrade organic contaminants and play an important role in organic contaminant behavior. We observed obvious degradation of p-nitrophenol (PNP) in the presence of biochars, through the detection of NO3– as well as organic byproducts. The extent of PNP degradation was correlated to the intensity of EPR signals of biochar particles. tert-Butanol (a •OH scavenger) did not completely inhibit PNP degradation, indicating that •OH could not fully explain PNP degradation. The decreased PNP degradation after tert-butanol addition was better correlated with reduced PNP sorption on biochars. PNP degradation through the direct contact with EPFRs in biochar particles could be an important contribution to the PNP concentration reduction in the aqueous phase. The coating of natural organic matter analogue (tannic acid) on biochars did not considerably inhibit PNP degradation, suggesting the ability of biochars to degrade PNP in soil and natural water. Similar EPFR-promoted degradation was observed for five different types of biochars and one activated carbon, as well as one additional chemical (p-aminophenol). Therefore, organic chemical degradation by EPFRs in biochars can be a common process in the environment and should be incorporated in organic chemical fate and risk studies.

The intriguing quasiparticles in solids, known as Dirac, Weyl, and Majorana fermions, etc. with properties akin to those theoretically predicted but never realized in high-energy physics, have excited intensive research activities in recent years. The transition metal dipnictides are attractive because of their extremely large magnetoresistance that is usually attributed to the carrier compensation effect. We briefly review herein the crystal growth, magneto-transport measurements, and theoretical studies of tantalum dipnictides TaAs 2 and TaP 2 , with the emphasis being put on discussion of the nontrivial topological states in both materials. The analysis of quantum oscillations of the magnetoresistance unveils nonzero Berry phase. The chiral negative longitudinal magnetoresistance further points to possible Weyl state, which was recently theoretically suggested as the result of the magnetic field-induced Zeeman splitting effect no matter how large the field is. The analysis of these intriguing behaviors could brush up our understanding about the family of materials and would be valuable for future work on investigating the magnetic field-induced topological phase transition in such semimetals.

Temperature- or pressure-driven n–p conduction-type switching has been described as an emerging phenomenon for potential applications as transistors, switches, and memory devices. The key challenge in the development of such n–p conduction-type switching materials is to establish maneuverable and controllable methods to achieve easy convertibility and nonvolatility. Herein, we report the first example of rewritable pressure and temperature dual-controlled n–p conduction-type switching in marcasite-type CrSb2. At room temperature, CrSb2 exhibits an unexcepted pressure-driven n–p conductivity-type switching around 12 GPa accompanied by a marcasite-to-arsenopyrite structural transition and a semiconductor-to-metal transition. The dramatic conduction-type switching is irreversible after pressure releasing at room temperature but reversible by annealing at a relatively low temperature (>80 °C). Accordingly, a multicycle bistability switching process is established under the dual regulation of both pressure and temperature. The underlying structure–property mechanism is revealed by in situ/ex situ characterization and analyses of the atomic-level microstructure, local lattice distortion, and residual stress induced by compression. This demonstration provides a new platform for the rational design of rewritable temperature/pressure-responsive photoelectric conversion devices.

Particles with circumstance-responsive conductivity have an appealing performance in constructing sensors. Here, “smart” conducting polyaniline-doped poly(styrene-co-N-isopropylacrylamide) composite spheres, i.e. PANI/P(St-NIPAM) particles, are reported. A series of PANI/P(St-NIPAM) particles can be prepared with different ratios of N-isopropylacrylamide to monomers, i.e. N/M ratios. With the improved N/M ratios in polymerization, the amount of polyaniline (PANI) incorporating into the produced particles increased, resulting in an enhanced conductivity. With the improved N/M ratios, the hydrodynamic diameters of PANI/P(St-NIPAM) particles increased at a low temperature, whereas they decreased at a high temperature; resulting in the enhanced volume-change ability with the increasing poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) content in particles. Depending on the temperature-induced volume change, these particles exhibit “smart” conductivity in a homemade device, in which these particles can be used as a temperature-responsive conducting medium to construct an “on–off” circuit, and the switch of an LED lamp can be triggered by temperature. These particles with the smart conducting property provide wide potential applications in sensors, microelectronics, energy storage, and other fields.

Porphyromonas gingivalis ( P. gingivalis ) invades host cells to evade antibiotics, driving the recurrence of periodontitis. However, current clinical treatment strategies remain ineffective in addressing this intracellular invasion by the bacteria. Here, we report a host-directed strategy that blocks bacterial invasion by targeting key host factors, including collagen I (using FT011), lipid rafts (using simvastatin), integrin β1 (using ATN-161), and FAK signaling (using YH-306). Inhibiting these targets significantly reduced P. gingivalis infection in human oral keratinocytes and periodontal ligament stem cells. Crucially, simvastatin restored the osteogenic ability of P. gingivalis -infected PDLSCs. These drugs subsequently functioned as effective antibiotic adjuvants. The combination of simvastatin or YH-306 with metronidazole, a standard-of-care antibiotic for periodontitis, exhibited potent synergistic effects, significantly eradicating intracellular bacteria at reduced antibiotic dosages. In a rat periodontitis model, simvastatin-metronidazole therapy yielded superior outcomes, significantly mitigating bacterial load, inflammation, and alveolar bone loss. The repurposing of clinically available drugs, such as simvastatin, as antibiotic adjuvants represents a promising, readily translatable therapeutic approach for periodontitis.

To address the issues of energy depletion and environmental pollution caused by the combustion of fossil fuels, electrocatalytic overall water splitting for hydrogen production is one of the very promising approaches. The key to the large-scale application of electrocatalytic overall water splitting lies in the search for low-cost, high-content, and high-performance electrocatalysts. In this paper, through a two-step process of carbonization followed by phosphination, the P-modified Co2C@Co/NF composite material (P–Co2C@Co/NF) was successfully designed and synthesized. P–Co2C@Co/NF exhibits excellent performance in hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) and oxygen evolution reactions (OER). Under alkaline conditions, the overpotential for HER and OER can reach 10 mA cm–2 current density with only 75 mV and 246 mV respectively. P–Co2C@Co/NF demonstrates excellent overall water splitting capability, requiring only 1.63 V of driving voltage to achieve 10 current density. This provides a new method for enhancing the electrocatalytic performance of heteroatom-modified transition metal compounds.

Urea electrolysis is critically important for the advancement of sustainable and clean energy conversion technologies, addressing global energy shortages and environmental concerns. The urea oxidation reaction (UOR) poses a significant challenge due to its unfavorable thermodynamics, making it a pivotal step in urea splitting. The 6-electron transfer process of UOR presents a bottleneck due to its sluggish kinetics. Consequently, the development of efficient urea oxidation electrocatalysts and gaining insights into the electronic configuration of the central metal ion are of paramount significance in achieving high-performance urea-based energy conversion technologies. In this study, we report the successful synthesis of hierarchical Ni 2 P nanosheets@nanorods (P-Ni 2 P HNNs) as promising catalysts to enhance UOR efficiency. This catalyst is designed and constructed using a hexamethylenetetramine-hydrolytic coprecipitation-oxidation process and a straightforward phosphorus-substituted method. X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy indicates that the presence of P-modified metal centers is responsible for the elevated UOR activity of P-Ni 2 P HNNs, with the electronic structure of Ni n + significantly enhancing Ni―O―O bond coupling for rapid UOR kinetics. Thanks to the highly exposed Ni n + centers and the well-designed architecture, P-Ni 2 P HNNs exhibit superior UOR activity and stability, with a low overpotential of 132 mV at 10 mA∙cm −2 , a small Tafel slope of 33.7 mV∙dec −1 , and sustained durability for 6 h at 10 mA∙cm −2 . Furthermore, a two-electrode cell for overall urea electrolysis is assembled with a P-Ni 2 P HNNs-2/NF anode, yielding a low potential of 1.411 V at 10 mA∙cm −2 and a high current density of 100 mA∙cm −2 at 1.595 V. This study presents an effective and viable approach for designing and synthesizing high-efficiency nickel-based phosphide electrocatalysts, which could pave the way for cost-effective and energy-efficient electrochemical hydrogen production, and advance phosphide research for various energy-related applications.
