Developing high-temperature polyimide (PI) adhesives requires the simultaneous enhancement of bulk cohesive strength and interfacial adhesion. In this work, a 3,3′,4,4′-benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA)/4,4′-oxidianiline (ODA)-based phenylethynyl-terminated PI system was modified via a 30k/8k molecular weight blend strategy to prepare processable, self-supporting adhesive films. To enhance performance, three distinct polar diamines (sulfone, amide, cyano) were introduced to replace a portion of the ODA. This strategy aimed to strengthen substrate wetting for improved interfacial adhesion and to reinforce bulk cohesion through hydrogen bonding. It is confirmed that the amide-containing sample (PI-A50) was the most effective, showing the highest polarity with a dielectric constant of 3.9 and the highest total surface energy of 51.87 mJ/m2. It has also maintained excellent thermal stability, with a glass transition temperature (Tg) of 317 °C and a temperature at 5% weight loss (Td5%) of 537 °C. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations revealed the unique synergistic mechanism for its superior performance. The –CONH– group not only showed a stronger interfacial binding energy with the Al (111) substrate, calculated at −19048.7 kcal/mol, but also formed the densest interchain hydrogen bond network, which explains why it achieved the highest cohesive energy density of 200.42 J/cm3 and the lowest fractional free volume of 44.28%. This simultaneous strengthening of both bulk cohesion and interfacial adhesion is the key to its enhanced performance.

Efficient separation of CO 2 from CH 4 is a critical unit operation for biogas upgrading and achieving carbon neutrality goals. While mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) offer an energy-efficient alternative to traditional separation processes, their industrial deployment is often restricted by engineering challenges, specifically filler agglomeration and non-selective interfacial defects. Herein, we report a novel MOF (metal–organic framework) gel network templated polymerization strategy that effectively circumvents these limitations. In this approach, a continuous, pre-formed network of UiO-66 MOF gel serves as a structural scaffold, within which the 6FDA-ODA polyimide matrix is directly polymerized. This method fosters exceptional interfacial adhesion and uniform dispersion of the filler, successfully eliminating non-selective defects. The resulting MMMs exhibit remarkable gas separation performance, with the optimal membrane (MA-0.075, with 1.6 wt% UiO-66 gel loading) achieving a CO 2 permeability of 30.9 Barrer and a CO 2 /CH 4 selectivity of 135.5 under mixed-gas conditions. This represents enhancements of 212 % and 162 %, respectively, over the pristine 6FDA-ODA polyimide membrane, surpassing the 2008 Robeson upper bound. Furthermore, the membrane demonstrated excellent operational stability over 120 h. This work provides a scalable fabrication route for advanced MMMs, demonstrating significant potential for energy-efficient gas separation applications.

With the increasing severity of electromagnetic (EM) pollution, conductive porous materials have been widely used as effective electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials to protect electronic equipment and human health. Although conventional conductive porous materials exhibit better impedance matching and lower EM wave reflection than metal-plate-based shielding materials. It remains challenging to overcome their poor mechanical strength and large thickness. In this study, we fabricated hot-pressed hierarchically porous polyimide foam (PF)/carbon black (CB)/Ni–P and PF/CB/Fe 3 O 4 –P composites with continuous conductive pathways using a chemical foaming and hot-pressing strategy. Benefiting from the continuous conductive pathways and hierarchically porous architecture, PF/CB/Ni–P containing 80 wt% Ni nanoparticles achieved a maximum EMI shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) of 60.7 dB in the X-band at a thickness of 5 mm. Meanwhile, the thicknesses of PF/CB/Fe 3 O 4 –P and PF/CB/Ni–P were further reduced by the hot-pressing strategy, exhibiting optimal absorption coefficients (A) of 0.51 and 0.68, respectively. The results demonstrate that this preparation method achieves excellent comprehensive performance, including enhanced mechanical strength and absorption-dominated EMI shielding, providing a promising approach for designing adaptive EMI shielding systems for aerospace and electronic applications. Foam-based beds, characterized by their considerable open-pore structures, have demonstrated remarkable efficiency in enhancing the formation dynamics of gas hydrates. However, the relationship between hydration performance and surface wettability of internal pores remains poorly understood. In this work, the sulfonated polyimide (SPI) foams with tunable surface wettability were developed and employed as formation beds for methane hydrates. It demonstrates that the SPI foam with a balanced hydrophobic-hydrophilic surface exhibits a significant enhancement in the formation of methane hydrate. Under static condition, the optimized foam achieves an extremely short induction period and a rapid hydration reaction rate of 2.3 V·V −1 ·min −1 , coupled with a high storage capacity of 119 V/V in water without any chemical additives. The balanced hydrophilic-hydrophobic surface facilitates the construction of hydrogen bonds and hydrate cage nuclei; meanwhile, it reduces interface energy, which promotes the generation and stabilization of hydrogen bond network, leading to rapid hydration reaction. Moreover, it provides a moderate affinity for gas and water, allowing their uniform distribution and thus large contact area, which contributes to a high storage capability. Furthermore, by incorporating super-hydrophobic polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) particles into the excessively-hydrophilic SPI foam, a balanced surface wettability is retraced, resulting in efficient formation of methane hydrates. It confirms that the wettability balance between hydrophobicity and hydrophilicity is crucial for efficient gas hydrate formation on a surface. This work provides insights into the influence mechanism of surface wettability on hydrate formation and offers significant guidance for the design of efficient bed reactors in the field of hydrate technology.

To investigate how the molecular structure of lubricants influences polyimide-induced alignment superlubricity system, we developed quantitative structure tribo-ability relationship (QSTR) models. These models aim to uncover the relationship between lubricant molecular structures and the phenomena of induced alignment superlubricity. Thirty-eight organic compounds and two ionic liquids underwent testing, with friction experiments carried out using GCr15 steel paired with polyimide. We crafted three distinct models based on two-dimensional (2D) descriptors, three-dimensional (3D) descriptors, and a combination of both. The results indicate that all three models exhibit impressive accuracy, robustness, and predictive ability. By analyzing the impact of different descriptors on lubrication systems, we offer several suggestions regarding molecular structural characteristics that enhance alignment superlubricity.

A novel sulfonated polyimide (SPI-PTDA) is synthesized by introducing low-cost and rigid perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTDA) into the SPI backbone. A sequence of SPI-PTDA-X membranes with different sulfonation levels has been prepared and characterized. The stable retention time of the SPI-PTDA-75 membrane in aqueous solution at 80 °C is greater than 240 h; its tensile strength (25.83 MPa) is three times that of N212, and the results of the theoretical calculations of molecular ESP indicate the existence of certain interactions within the SPI-PTDA molecule, being responsible for the enhanced mechanical strength of the SPI-PTDA membrane. Additionally, the vanadium ion selectivity of the SPI-PTDA-75 membrane is approximately double that of the N212. The VRFB with the SPI-PTDA-75 membrane demonstrates a Coulombic efficiency (CE) of 97.59% and an energy efficiency (EE) of 80.47% at 120 mA cm–2. The results of 400 charge–discharge cycling tests reveal that the SPI-PTDA-75 membrane maintains strong long-term cycling stability.

Noise pollution poses a significant impact on both physical and mental health of humans. Traditional acoustic materials often enhance their performance by increasing their weight, which is incompatible with the requirements of lightweight design. In this study, aramid nanofiber (ANF) is synthesized via using electrospinning, and a blend of polyimide (PI) precursor solution and ANFs are utilized to facilitate the self-assembly of ANF/PI aerogel (APA). By adjusting the content of ANFs and PI, porous network structures are achieved without augmenting the overall density, while maintaining a superior sound absorption performance. Notably, APA exhibits a noise reduction coefficient (NRC) of 0.53 and a sound transmission loss (STL) of 14 dB at 6300 Hz. Furthermore, the incorporation of ANFs and PI provides the aerogels with robust mechanical and physical properties, including only 10 % plastic deformation after 300 compression cycles, exceptional hydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 139°, and low thermal conductivity of 0.0343 W m −1 K −1 at room temperature. This research presents a feasible design approach for the creation of lightweight, efficient, and multifunctional ANF/PI aerogels.

Organic solvent ultrafiltration (OSU) membrane as the crucial supporting layer of thin-film composite (TFC) organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membrane can help the OSN technology to satisfy the rapidly growing demand for small-molecular separation and purification in organic solvent systems. Aiming at the two main bottlenecks of poor tolerance to strong polar solvents and low solvent flux of the conventional commercial polyimide (PI) ultrafiltration (UF) membrane, in this study, a facile method was proposed to prepare a novel polyimide/polyethyleneimine@TiO2 (PI/PEI@TiO2) OSU membrane with improved solvent resistance and permeability by synchronously coupling the non-solvent-induced phase transformation (NIPs), chemical crosslinking and interfacial in-situ biomineralization. Dut to the chemical crosslinking between PEI and PI, the PI/PEI@TiO2 membrane exhibited good resistance to more organic solvents including the strong polar aprotic solvents (e.g., DMF, NMP and DMSO), ordinary polar solvents (e.g., ethanol) and nonpolar solvents (e.g., n-hexane). At the same time, PEI synchronously catalyzed Ti-BALDH to in-situ generate the TiO2 nanoparticles via interfacial biomineralization, which improved the solvent flux of the PI/PEI@TiO2 membrane due to the creation of more channels and promoted the compatibility of TiO2 within PI/PEI matrix. Especially, the PI/PEI@TiO2-5 membrane with 5 wt% TiO2 loading showed the optimal solvent resistance and high flux in strong polar aprotic solvents (>50 L m−2 h−1·bar −1 in DMF). Therefore, the resultant new PI/PEI@TiO 2 OSU membrane will have a promising separation application in the organic solvent systems in the future.

Polyimide (PI) fibers are widely regarded for their exceptional thermal stability, mechanical strength, and chemical resistance, making them highly promising for aerospace, protective textiles, and flexible thermal insulation applications. However, their intrinsic brown–yellow tone and traditional carrier dyeing processes suffer from poor color fastness, structural damage, and wastewater pollution, which severely restrict their application expansion in multifunctional integration and green manufacturing. To overcome these limitations, this study proposes a molecular-level design strategy by precisely regulating the steric hindrance and electron cloud distribution of dianhydride monomers, leading to the development of a colorless poly(amic acid) (PAA, polyimide precursor) solution. It was demonstrated that increasing the concentration of PAA and storing it in solid form significantly delayed degradation while preserving favorable spinnability. Building upon this, a dope-dyeing strategy was employed by directly incorporating organic dyes (Dye), inorganic nanosheets, or thermochromic precursors (polyacrylonitrile (PAN)) into the PAA matrix. Using phase-separation-based wet spinning followed by thermal imidization, these functional agents were uniformly embedded within the fiber interiors. This approach enabled the formation of porous PI composite fibers with tunable pore distributions and stable coloration while benefiting from in situ structural reinforcement. Among them, PI/Preoxidized filament (panof, produced by preoxidizing PAN during the thermal imidization process) fibers showed the most outstanding performance in mechanical strength (22.34 MPa), flame retardancy (limiting oxygen index 53.0%), and thermal insulation (thermal conductivity 0.02907 W/m·K), due to molecular entanglement. This comprehensive strategy provides a feasible path for the green engineering of multifunctional thermal protection fibers and lays the theoretical foundation for their application in military thermal insulation textiles and extreme environment clothing.

Cellulosic paper is an appealing substrate for flexible electronics, yet its modest strength, limited heat tolerance, and intrinsic hydrophilicity constrain performance. We report a polyimide (PI) sizing that permeates the fiber network to create an interpenetrating PI–cellulose framework. The treated paper reaches a tensile strength of 47.1 ± 3 MPa, reported as an ∼700 % gain over the control. It also shows strong chemical tolerance, with <3 % mass loss in acid (pH = 2.6). Reversible hydrogen bonding between PI carbonyls and cellulose hydroxyls mediates bond rupture and re-formation under heat, enabling shape-memory actuation. The glass-transition temperature ( T g ) attains 196 °C-approximately twice that of the control-and the thermal decomposition temperature ( T d ) is 296 °C. Shape memory metrics include 94.6 % recovery and 98.5 % fixation. The system is reprocessable in N , N -dimethylacetamide (DMAc), affording >77 % cellulose recovery and facile reshaping. This practical sizing route recasts paper as a strong, heat-resistant, and recyclable platform for flexible electronics.

Marine equipment continues to face the threat of marine biofouling, and the large-scale preparation of antifouling coatings using thermal spray technology has been emerging as one of the effective strategies. Polyimide coatings were prepared by flame spraying precursor liquid materials, and the spraying distance and substrate temperature were altered to obtain optimal coating structure. A novel antifouling agent NH 2 -ZIF-8@BITEP was synthesized by using a zinc-based metal-organic framework ZIF-8 as a nanocarrier to bond epoxidized BIT. This antifouling agent was mixed with polyamide solution, and the MOF-based coatings were fabricated via flame spraying. The coating showed a sterilization rate of over 99.99% after co-incubation with Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus for 24 h, and effectively reduced the adhesion of diatoms after 14 days of co-culturing. This new MOF-loaded polyimide coating would open a new window for designing and constructing marine antifouling coating for long-term applications.

Converting CO 2 into valuable chemicals through photocatalytic reduction is a promising method to achieve carbon neutrality. Nonetheless, the insufficient active sites of photocatalysts lead to low CO 2 reduction efficiency and product selectivity. Taking advantage of the synergistic effect of photocatalytic heterostructures is an effective way to overcome this shortcoming. Here, metal-organic frameworks (MIL-101(Cr))-titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) staggered gap (type II) heterojunctions were deposited on different woven polyimide (PI) substrates (MIL-101-TiO 2 PI hybrid photocatalysts) via atomic layer deposition and hydrothermal reaction for CO 2 photoreduction. The immobilized photocatalysts on the PI substrates resolved the challenge of separating powdered photocatalysts from liquid products or reactants. The prepared MIL-101(Cr)-TiO 2 PI hybrid photocatalysts displayed synergistic photocatalytic reduction performance towards CO 2 by separating the photogenerated charge carriers. The charge transfer between the heterojunctions and the substrates extended the lifetime of the excited electrons and holes, thereby generating synergy effects and promoting the CO 2 reduction yield. The rougher surface and higher specific area of the PI felt enabled higher loadings of heterojunctions compared with other woven structures of the fabric and mat. As a result, MIL-101(Cr)-TiO 2 PI felts showed multiple reduction pathways over the heterostructures and enhanced photocatalytic performance, with the main product yields of 29.6, 9.2, and 0.8 μmol g −1 h −1 for CO, CH 4 and H 2 , respectively. Meanwhile, CO selectivity of the MIL-101(Cr)-TiO 2 PI felt reached as high as 75 %. This study provides significant insights into the role of the substrate in flexible and immobilized hybrid photocatalysts with synergistic performance to achieve enhanced CO 2 reduction yield.
