In this study, ZIF-8 modified fluorinated graphene composite (FG@ZIF-8) was innovatively prepared and used as a novel functional filler to improve the anticorrosion performance of epoxy coating on Q235 carbon steel. The morphology and structure of FG@ZIF-8 composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), x-ray powder diffractometer (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) tests. The results showed that the structure and morphology of the composites largely depended on the composition ratio of FG and ZIF-8. The mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of FG@ZIF-8 modified coatings were also investigated. The unique two-dimensional sheet structure and insulation of FG in the FG@ZIF-8 filler can not only inhibit the penetration of corrosive media but also discourage electron migration effectively on the interface of coating/matrix during the electrochemical reaction. Meanwhile, the chemical cross-linking between the amine groups in ZIF-8 and the epoxy group increases the degree of densification of the coatings. Besides, the 2-methylimidazole from the dissolution of ZIF-8 on FG@ZIF-8 will also inhibit the corrosion reaction. These advantages endow the FG@ZIF-8 modified epoxy coatings an excellent long-term corrosion resistance. Our findings may inspire the development of new graphene-based materials with superior protective properties for metallic materials.

In this work, β-cyclodextrin (β-CD)/mesoporous carbon (CMK-8) nanocomposite was synthesized and used as an electrochemical sensing platform for highly sensitive and selective detection of Cu2+. The morphology and structure of β-CD/CMK-8 were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). In addition, the dates from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and Cyclic voltammetry (CV) demonstrated that the β-CD/CMK-8 possessed a fast electronic transfer rate and large effective surface area. Besides this, the β-CD/CMK-8 composite displayed high enrichment ability toward Cu2+. As a result of these impressive features, the β-CD/CMK-8 modified electrode provided a wide linear response ranging from 0.1 ng·L−1to 1.0 mg·L−1with a low detection limit of 0.3 ng·L−1. Furthermore, the repeatability, reproducibility and selectivity of β-CD/CMK-8 towards Cu2+were commendable. The sensor could be used to detect Cu2+in real samples. All in all, this work proposes a simple and sensitive method for Cu2+detection, which provides a reference for the subsequent detection of HMIs.Keywords:copper ion;β-cyclodextrin;mesoporous carbon;electrochemical sensor

Nanomedicines represent new promising strategies for treating atherosclerosis (AS), because they enhance drug bioavailability and have lower side effects. Nevertheless, nanomedicines have several challenges with these advantages, including a limited circulation life, lack of precise targeting, and insufficient control of drug release. Accordingly, the development of drug delivery systems (DDSs) with abilities to enhance the payload delivery to the AS plaque lesion and to control drug release can boost the therapeutic efficacy and safety for AS treatment. Herein, we employed a one-step self-assembly approach for effectively encapsulating the anti-AS drug simvastatin (SIM) in zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) (SIM/ZIF-8), and then coated it with hyaluronic acid (HA) to fabricate the SIM/ZIF-8@HA nanoplatform. The resulting nanoplatform could efficiently accumulate in plaque regions through the specific recognition between HA and CD44. Meanwhile, the acid environment breaks down ZIF-8 to release SIM. The in vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrated that SIM/ZIF-8@HA could inhibit the proliferation of smooth muscle cells and have good biocompatibility. Moreover, SIM/ZIF-8@HA can effectively suppress the development of AS plaques without any considerable side effects in mice treatments. The findings revealed that SIM/ZIF-8@HA may be a promising nanomedicine for safe and efficient anti-AS applications.

Pesticides are the primary defending strategy against major biological invaders and important for ensuring national food security. Intelligent nanopesticides with precise controlled release modes are currently an emerging area of interest in the field of green, safe, and sustainable pesticide formulation. In this study, β-cypermethrin (β-CYP) was loaded into ZIF-8 by the one-pot method, which successfully prepared a pH-responsive delivery nanoparticle (β-CYP/ZIF-8) to control termites. Results demonstrated that β-CYP/ZIF-8 had a mean diameter of 188 ± 2 nm and a loading capacity of approximately 21%. In vitro release experiments showed that β-CYP/ZIF-8 releases better in acidic than in neutral conditions due to the presence of intermediate acid-unstable imidazole organic compounds. The acidic microenvironment in which termites thrive can promote β-CYP release due to ZIF-8 decomposition, thus improving pesticide targeting and reducing toxic side effects. The bioactivity survey confirmed that β-CYP/ZIF-8 could control termites (Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki) for a longer duration compared to commercial wettable powder (WP) and emulsifiable concentrate (EC). Moreover, an acute toxicity test showed an over 2- and 10-fold reduction in the acute toxicity of β-CYP/ZIF-8 to earthworms and zebrafish, respectively, compared to that of commercial WP and EC. Finally, the cytotoxicity assay of β-CYP/ZIF-8 showed higher safety to human hepatocyte LO2 cells. Overall, these β-CYP/ZIF-8 nanoparticles, prepared using the one-pot method, have great application potential in sustainable pest management and protection of the ecological environment.

Residual antibiotics in wastewater have gained widespread attention because of their toxicity to humans and the environment. In this work, Cu-doped ZIF-8s (Cu-ZIF-8s) were successfully synthesized by the impregnation of Cu2+in ZIF-8 and applied in the removal of ofloxacin (OFX) from water. Remarkably, excellent adsorption performance was obtained in Cu-ZIF-8s, especially for Cu-ZIF-8-1, in which the adsorption capacity (599.96 mg·g−1) was 4.2 times higher than that of ZIF-8 and superior to various adsorbents reported previously. The adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherm follow the pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir model, respectively. Furthermore, the removal efficiencies of OFX in Cu-ZIF-8-1 reached over 90% at low concentrations. It was revealed that electrostatic interaction and complexation play important roles in the adsorption process. In addition, the material can be regenerated by simple methods. Therefore, the obtained Cu-doped MOFs may have a promising application in the treatment of antibiotic-containing wastewater.Keywords:adsorption;complexation;metal-organic frameworks;ofloxacin

Forward osmosis membranes have a wide range of applications in the field of water treatment. However, the application of seawater desalination is restricted, so the research of forward osmosis membranes for seawater desalination poses new challenges. In this study, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) was synthesized by a mechanical stirring method, and its crystal structure, surface morphology, functional group characteristics, thermochemical stability, pore size distribution and specific surface area were analyzed. The cellulose acetate (CA)/ZIF-8 mixed matrix forward osmosis membrane was prepared by using the synthesized ZIF-8 as a modified additive. The effects of the additive ZIF-8 content, coagulation bath temperature, mixing temperature and heat treatment temperature on the properties of the CA/ZIF-8 forward osmosis membrane were systematically studied, and the causes were analyzed to determine the best membrane preparation parameters. The structure of the CA membrane and CA/ZIF-8 mixed matrix forward osmosis membranes prepared under the optimal conditions were characterized by Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), contact angle and Atomic force microscope (AFM). Finally, the properties of the HTI membrane (Membrane manufactured by Hydration Technology Innovations Inc.), CA forward osmosis membrane and CA/ZIF-8 mixed matrix forward osmosis membrane were compared under laboratory conditions. For the CA membrane, the water flux and reverse salt flux reached 48.85 L·m−2·h−1and 3.4 g·m−2·h−1, respectively. The reverse salt flux and water flux of the CA/ZIF-8 membrane are 2.84 g·m−2·h−1and 50.14 L·m−2·h−1, respectively. ZIF-8 has a promising application in seawater desalination.Keywords:desalination;ZIF-8;forward osmosis membranes

A novel nanoassembly was constructed through encapsulating upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) into a metal–organic framework structure (ZIF-8), in which doxorubicin (DOX) was absorbed into pores of ZIF-8. The blue emission of UCNPs was quenched by DOX through the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) strategy. When the nanoprobe was exposed to food samples with different pH values, ZIF-8 collapsed to release DOX molecules, resulting in upconversion recovery. The porous structure of ZIF-8 provides abundant space for DOX absorption, which significantly improves the detection capacities and accuracy. It is shown that the probe has a good linear relationship when pH values vary from 2.5 to 7.4, and can distinguish pH variations as low as 0.5 in real samples. This strategy has been successfully used to determine food spoilage by determination of pH variations. Graphical abstract

The efficiency of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has surpassed all other thin-film solar cells. It is well known that the mismatch between the perovskite film and electron transport layer is an important factor to damage the stability of PSCs. Herein, an effective modification strategy to improve stability by using FAI@ZIF-8 is demonstrated. It is found that the FAI@ZIF-8 modification reduces the trap-state density of the perovskite by slowly releasing FAI from the ZIF-8 pore. Besides, FAI@ZIF-8 improves energy-level alignment at TiO 2 /perovskite interface, which facilitates electron extraction at the interface. As a consequence, an optimal power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 23.52% is achieved for the FAI@ZIF-8-treated PSCs. After storing under 20–30% relative humidity and room temperature for 2000 h, the FAI@ZIF-8-treated device sustains 96% of its initial PCE; nevertheless, the control device maintains only 73% of its initial PCE under the same conditions. This strategy is helpful to guide the development of high-performance PSCs and promotes commercialization of perovskite materials.

The design of positively charged ultrathin films for surface modification is of crucial importance for biomedical applications. Herein, we report the layer-by-layer assembly of pure positively charged ultrathin films based on the host–guest interaction of cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]). Two positively charged poly(ethylenimine)s (PEI) functionalized with guest moieties methyl viologen (MV) and indole (ID) were alternately assembled with the formation of CB[8] ternary complex under basic conditions. The growth of the (PEI-MV@CB[8]/PEI-ID) films was monitored by spectroscopic ellipsometry and quartz crystal microbalance. The morphology and structure of the films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and UV–vis spectroscopy, respectively. These positively charged (PEI-MV@CB[8]/PEI-ID) films were very stable in the pH range from 4 to 9 but disassembled immediately when subjected to a competitive guest adamantylamine. Finally, the films were successfully employed as nanocontainers for DNA loading and subsequent directing the transfection of the adhered cells.

The quality of the perovskite active layer is the critical factor that affects the photovoltaic performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). In this paper, the 8-hydroxyquinoline lead (Pbq 2 ) containing pyridine bonds, C–O bonds, and quinoline ring groups was introduced into the MAPbI 3 perovskite layer to improve the performances and stabilities of PSCs. The doped Pbq 2 could adjust the growth of perovskite crystals by coordinating interactions between the above functional groups in Pbq 2 with Pb 2+ , MA + , and I − in perovskite together. And as a result, high-quality and dense perovskite films with larger grain sizes were obtained. At the same time, large molecule-sized Pbq 2 chelated at the grain boundary of perovskite, which passivated the defects and suppressed non-radiative recombination of photo carriers and ion migration at grain boundaries. Therefore, the interface energy barrier between the perovskite layer and the electron transfer layer (ETL) was reduced by the Pbq 2 doping, which accelerated the separation and transportation of carriers at the ETL/perovskite layer interface. Finally, Pbq 2 -modified PSCs achieved a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 20.82% with an open circuit voltage (V oc ) of 1.144 V and a fill factor (FF) of 77.4% compared to a PCE of 17.87% for the reference sample. Furthermore, Pbq 2 -modified PSCs showed better light stability and moisture resistance in air conditions.
