Bi(Mg 0.5 Hf 0.5 )O 3 (BMH) has been frequently exploited to engineer the material’s phase structure, micromorphology, dielectric, piezoelectric, and energy storage performance of BaTiO 3 (BT)-based ceramics for the optimization of multifunctional dielectrics. Herein, combined with the Ba(Ti 0.8 Sn 0.2 )O 3 relaxor, (1 – x )Ba(Ti 0.8 Sn 0.2 )O 3 – x Bi(Mg 0.5 Hf 0.5 )O 3 (BTS- x BMH) ceramic samples were prepared through a solid-state reaction process. The micromorphology, dielectric properties, ferroelectric properties, and energy storage performance of BTS- x BMH ceramics were engineered by increasing BMH content. The addition of BMH can refine the grain size, increase the relaxation degree, raise the breakdown strength, and facilitate the production of the polar nanoregions in the BTS- x BMH ceramics. Compared to pure BTS, the energy efficiency of BTS-BMH is remarkably enhanced, which originates from the disruption of the ferroelectric long-range order owing to the BMH modification. At the maximum applied field of 100 kV/cm, the largest energy density of W rec = 0.3 J/cm 3 was realized at the composition of x = 0.05. The highest energy efficiency of η = 99% was acquired for x = 0.15 at 110 kV/cm. Moreover, the energy efficiency for x = 0.15 displays good temperature stability. These findings can guide the further optimization design of environmentally friendly BT-based ceramic capacitors for energy storage applications.

The effects of Li/Er and Li/Bi co-substitution on the structure, dielectric, and ferroelectric properties of BaTiO3 (BT) ceramics were investigated and analyzed. X-ray diffraction measurements show that the doped samples have a single tetragonal structure without secondary phases. Rietveld refinement results show that the Li/Er and Li/Bi ions tend to replace A-sites of BT lattices at low doping content. As the doping content increases, the Curie temperature moves to the high-temperature region due to the increased tetragonality and internal stress. Compared with the undoped ceramics, the ferroelectric properties of the doped ceramics are improved. The enhanced remnant polarization is attributed to the combined effects of large grain modulation and defect dipole arrangement.

Materials capable of dynamic persistent luminescence (PersL) within the visible spectrum are highly sought after for applications in display, biosensing, and information security. However, PersL materials with eye-detectable and excitation-wavelength-dependent characteristics are rarely achieved. Herein, a nonstoichiometric compound CaGa x O 4 :Bi ( x < 2) is present, which demonstrates ultra-long, color-tunable PersL. The persistent emission wavelength can be tuned by varying the excitation wavelength, enabling dynamic color modulation from the green to the orange region within the visible spectrum. Theoretical calculations, in conjunction with experimental observations, are utilized to elucidate the thermodynamic charge transitions of various defect states, thereby providing insights into the relationship between Bi 3+ emitters, traps, and multicolored PersL. Furthermore, the utility of color-tunable PersL materials and flexible devices is showcased for use in visual sensing of invisible ultraviolet light, multicolor display, information encryption, and anti-counterfeiting. These discoveries create new opportunities to develop smart photoelectric materials with dynamically controlled PersL for various applications.

Human-machine intelligent interaction (HMII) technology, which is an advanced iteration of human-machine interaction technology, has garnered widespread attention owing to its significant achievements in healthcare and virtual reality research. Nonetheless, these fields often depend on elaborate multi-sensor integrations and face challenges in achieving precise control over robotic manipulation. Herein, a novel transistor-like iontronics pressure sensor based on an MXene/Bi 2D heterojunction is proposed. This transistor-like, flexible, all-solid-state, self-powered iontronics device exhibited a fast response time (66.59 ms), long lifetime (up to 50,000 cycles), and static/dynamic response with linear sensitivity. A deep-learning-assisted single-device HMII system was further constructed. Crucially, the system is adept at monitoring subtle skin deformations triggered by the median and ulnar nerves, efficient real-time decoding of sophisticated hand gestures (recognition accuracy of 95.83%), and precise control of robotic hands using tactile perception feedback. This approach addresses the inherent redundancy in multi-sensor devices used to decode motion across multiple finger joints, marking a significant step forward for iontronics in enhancing the perceptual interaction between humans and machines.

GeTe and (Bi,Sb) 2 Te 3 are two representative thermoelectric (TE) materials showing maximum performance at middle and low temperature, respectively. In order to achieve higher performance over the whole temperature range, their segmented one-leg TE modules are designed and fabricated by one-step spark plasma sintering (SPS). To search for contact and connect layers, the diffusion behavior of Fe, Ni, Cu, and Ti metal layers in GeTe is studied systematically. The results show that Ti with a similar linear expansivity (10.80 × 10 −6 K −1 ) to GeTe, has low contact resistance (3 µΩ cm 2 ) and thin diffusion layer (0.4 µm), and thus is an effective metallization layer for GeTe. The geometric structure of the GeTe/(Bi,Sb) 2 Te 3 segmented one-leg TE module and the ratio of GeTe to (Bi,Sb) 2 Te 3 are determined by finite element simulation method. When the GeTe height ratio is 0.66, its theoretical maximum conversion efficiency (η max ) can reach 15.9% without considering the thermal radiation and thermal/electrical contact resistance. The fabricated GeTe/(Bi,Sb) 2 Te 3 segmented one-leg TE module showed a η max up to 9.5% with a power density ≈ 7.45 mW mm −2 , which are relatively high but lower than theoretical predictions, indicating that developing segmented TE modules is an effective approach to enhance TE conversion efficiency.

In this study, Bi₂O₂Se nanosheets were synthesized via a hydrothermal method, and a Bi₂O₂Se/WSe₂ heterostructure was subsequently constructed using a mechanical compounding approach to develop a photoelectrochemical photodetector. By optimizing the mass ratio and KOH electrolyte concentration, the Bi₂O₂Se/WSe₂ heterostructure exhibited optimal performance at a 7:1 ratio in 0.1 M KOH. Benefiting from the interfacial heterojunction between the two materials, the Bi₂O₂Se/WSe₂ heterostructure achieved a photocurrent density of -2.74 µA/cm² under zero external bias, representing an order-of-magnitude enhancement compared to pristine Bi₂O₂Se nanosheets. Concurrently, the rise time was significantly reduced from 0.86 s to 0.28 s, And the decay time decreased from 4.85 s to 0.32 s, demonstrating superior self-powered characteristics. Furthermore, the Bi₂O₂Se/WSe₂ heterostructure exhibited a maximum photoresponsivity of 61 µA/W. The optimized Bi₂O₂Se/WSe₂ photodetector showed no notable performance degradation during a 10,000 s cyclic on/off illumination test. This work highlights the immense potential of the Bi₂O₂Se/WSe₂ heterostructure-based self-powered photodetector in delivering exceptional self-driven functionality, outstanding optoelectronic properties, and robust stability for practical applications.

Intelligent hydrogels can provide various biomimetic actuations in response to external stimuli, but it is still difficult to program their actuating complexity, which severely limits their further applications. Herein, a stimuli-responsive actuating bi-hydrogel with a directional negative layer and a homogeneous positive layer has been explored. The stretched natural rubber latex–polyacrylamide (NRL-PAAm) hydrogel layer can partly maintain this directional structure, which can further integrate with the photothermal-responsive graphene-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (G-PNIPAM) hydrogel layer to obtain the anisotropic bilayer hydrogel. First of all, different from bilayer PNIPAM-based hydrogels, which commonly only achieve two-dimensional (2D) complex actuations, this bi-hydrogel can achieve various not only 2D but also three-dimensional (3D) complex programmable actuations, especially because of its double anisotropy of both bilayer and directional structures. Furthermore, this bi-hydrogel can own a rapid actuating speed reaching 27.7°/s of bending and 18.0°/s of folding in response to non-contact near-infrared (NIR) irradiation, mainly owing to the high photothermal conversion efficiency of composited graphene. Last but not least, thanks to the highly enhanced mechanical performance of the directional NRL-PAAm hydrogel layer, this bi-hydrogel is robust, reaching 4.0 times the tensile strength of pure G-PNIPAM, which owns a relatively powerful force to lift more than 50 times its self-weight. This work provides a promising intelligent hydrogel integrating programmable 2D/3D complex actuation, rapid actuating speed, and powerful force, which will also inspire exploration of other soft intelligent materials.

A co-sintering route for fabricating ZrO 2 /Al 2 O 3 bi-layer ultrafiltration membranes on quartz supports was proposed. By combining the piezoelectric support and the weak capillary force of transition layer, a thin (∼300 nm), narrowly distributed pore size, and built-in ultrasonic antifouling ultrafiltration membrane was prepared. Considering the mechanical strength of the Al 2 O 3 layer and the interfacial bonding, a co-sintering temperature of 950 °C was selected. Meanwhile, a holding step at 600 °C was introduced to alleviate the thermodynamic mismatch between the two layers caused by the phase transition of the support. The membrane maintained excellent piezoelectric response, along with high flux (366 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 ), low roughness (11.6 nm), and small pore size (∼16 nm). The antifouling performance of the piezoelectric ultrafiltration membrane was evaluated through filtration experiments of nano-sized water-in-oil emulsions. The stable permeability of the ultrafiltration membrane was 2.8 times higher than that of the support and further increased by 16.4 % when in situ ultrasound is applied, reaching 0.829 in the stable normalized flux ( J/J 0 ). Additionally, after cleaning, the membrane flux was almost completely restored. The piezoelectric ceramic membranes prepared by this method have great potential for oil-water separation.

Two-dimensional lubricating fillers play a crucial role in strengthening the tribological performance of polymer coatings. In this study, MXene-PDA-Bi 6 O 7 (MXene/Bi 6 O 7 ) heterostructured composite nanofillers were prepared via a mussel-inspired chemical method. Polyimide (PI) composite coatings with varying MXene:Bi₆O₇ mass ratios were fabricated, and their microstructure, mechanical properties, and tribological performance were systematically characterized. The loading of Bi 6 O 7 nanoflowers onto the surface of PDA-modified MXene was achieved through in situ assembly, resulting in the formation of MXene/Bi 6 O 7 heterostructures. The experimental results demonstrated that the synergistic effect of MXene and Bi 6 O 7 significantly enhanced the properties of the PI composite coatings. Specifically, when the MXene-to-Bi₆O₇ mass ratio was 4:6, the PI composite coatings exhibited an 11.2 % reduction in friction coefficient and a 70.5 % decrease in wear rate compared with pure PI. Additionally, the tensile strength of the PI matrix was increased to 185.99 MPa. The MXene/Bi 6 O 7 heterostructure effectively reduced direct contact between the friction pairs by forming a dense transfer membrane, thereby maintaining stable lubrication performance under a broad range of conditions. The study elucidates the role of two-dimensional heterostructures in enhancing the interfacial mechanics and tribological properties of polymers, providing theoretical guidance and technical routes for the development of high-performance abrasion-resistant polymer coating materials.

In the realm of sustainable road construction, bio-oil has emerged as a promising and eco-friendly alternative for rejuvenating aged asphalt. Nevertheless, challenges arise due to poor stability, diminished performance at elevated temperatures, and limited anti-aging properties. This study introduces an innovative approach by blending biochar, obtained from the pyrolysis of waste coffee grounds, into bio-oil to create a composite modified regenerator. Initially, the study conducts a microscopic characterization of the biochar using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Subsequently, the rheological properties of this composite rejuvenated asphalt are evaluated across low, moderate, and high-temperature ranges using bending beam rheometer (BBR), linear amplitude sweep (LAS), and multiple stress creep and recovery (MSCR) tests. Departing from the traditional emphasis on initial property restoration, it further delves into performance alterations after re-aging of rejuvenated asphalt through temperature sweep (TS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) tests, providing a comprehensive assessment of the anti-aging characteristics of rejuvenated asphalt. Additionally, gel permeation chromatography (GPC) is employed to quantitatively analyze the changes in asphalt molecular weight distribution. The microscopic characterization reveals the development of a rough and porous structure within the biochar, facilitating enhanced adhesion and interaction between the rejuvenator and the asphalt binder. Moreover, bio-oil rejuvenated asphalt exhibits excellent low-temperature crack resistance and moderate-temperature fatigue resistance. Following the incorporation of biochar, notable enhancements in high-temperature rutting resistance and anti-aging properties are observed, validating the efficacy of the biochar with bio-oil composite modified regenerator. To achieve optimal performance outcomes, a biochar content of 6 % (as a proportion of aged asphalt), corresponding to a 1:1 ratio of biochar to bio-oil, is recommended. Under this condition, the properties of the composite modified rejuvenated asphalt demonstrate comparability to those of the original asphalt. In summary, this research underscores the potential for integrating waste coffee biochar material into infrastructure development, thereby promoting circular economy principles and advancing more sustainable construction practices.

SnO 2 -based materials are promising electrocatalysts for the conversion of CO 2 to formate however increasing their activity further is challenging due to the suboptimal CO 2 adsorption and activation capacity. The interfacial engineering has proven effective in modulating the electronic structure and adsorption behavior of electrocatalysts. Herein, a heterostructure Bi/SnO 2 was constructed for the CO 2 electroreduction to formate in which a formate Faraday efficiency of 94.9 % and single-pass carbon efficiency of 40.3 % were achieved at −1.0 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode in 1.0 M KOH. During a 30-hour stability test, the current density was nearly constant without a significant decrease while the formate Faraday efficiency was maintained around 90 %. This remarkable activity is attributed to the strong electronic interaction arising from p–p orbital coupling at the Bi/SnO 2 interface, according to the experimental and theoretical investigations. The computational insights suggest that the p–p orbital coupling promotes the electron transfer from Bi to SnO 2 and optimizes the adsorption strength of the intermediate (*OCHO) to enhance the catalytic activity. The formation of *OCHO during formate generation was confirmed by the i n situ attenuated total reflectance surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy. This work might contribute key insights into the mechanisms underlying activity enhancement via strong electronic interaction between dual p- block metal catalysts.

In this study, bi-functions of surface adsorption and laccase like catalysis were integrated by the hybrid membranes of Cu-MOF (Cu-2MI) uniformly incorporated polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) for the first time, which endow an unexpected utility in surface physical adsorption and chemical catalytic engineering. In which, the loading of Cu-2MI was varied to optimize the surface performance of the membranes. The adsorption conditions were optimized based on batch adsorption experiments, and the adsorption kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamics were discussed by using theoretical models to elucidate the adsorption mechanism. In addition, the laccase-mimicking catalytic performance of these Cu-2MI/PVDF hybrid membranes was explored based on the colorimetric reaction of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DP). The laccase-like catalytic kinetics, including K m and V max , were determined, and their catalytic stability under varying pH, temperature, organic solvents, and storage time was systematically tested and compared to that of free laccase. The maximum adsorption capacity of the obtained Cu-2MI/PVDF hybrid membrane for acid fuchsin (AF) is 4789.5 μg cm −2 . Moreover, the hybrid membrane exhibits a good linear relationship in the range of 5.0–750 μM in adrenaline detection, with a detection limit of 3.60 μM. This work highlights the exceptional surface activity and stability of the Cu-MOF/PVDF hybrid membranes, which ensure promising applicability in surface physical and chemical engineering.
