Metallic Bi-decorated BiVO4 nanosheets enabling improved photoelectrochemical detection of trace chlorpyrifos under visible light through localized surface plasmon resonance

Feng Luping,Li Xinfeng,Wang Jianghong,Chen Enjun,Fan Yujie,Jin Leyao,Tang Peisong,Zhang Lixiang

A visible-light-powered photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor was devised for chlorpyrifos (CPs) determination  using metallic Bi-decorated BiVO 4 nanosheets (Bi@BiVO 4 NSs) with localized surface plasmon resonance (SPR) synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal method. It was observed that Bi@BiVO 4 -based PEC sensors exhibit significantly enhanced PEC responses over pristine BiVO 4 due to the collaborative effect of metallic Bi’s SPR phenomenon and BiVO 4 ’s visible-light-driven properties. Furthermore, the addition of CPs selectively suppresses the photocurrent signal of the sensor due to the in-situ formation of Bi-CPs complexes, which hindered electron transfer through specific chelation reactions between Bi sites and CPs. The designed PEC sensor achieved high-sensitivity detection of CPs, with a linear concentration range from 0.02 to 20 ppb and a detection limit of  0.01 ppb. These attributes  may offer a blueprint for developing diverse PEC sensing systems to monitor various environmental pesticide contaminants like CPs by synergistic integration of visible-light-responsive BiVO 4 and SPR-active metallic Bi. Bi-based semiconductors composites of BiVO4 quantum dots decorated Bi12TiO20 via in-suit growth with ultrasound for enhancing photocatalytic performance

Tao Wang,Xiqing Liu,Donglai Han,Changchang Ma,Yang Liu,Pengwei Huo,Yongsheng Yan

In this work, two Bi-based semiconductors composites was synthesized through the BiVO 4 quantum dots (BVO QDs) was grown on the Bi 12 TiO 20 (BTO) via an in-suit growth with the ultrasonic method, which was more stability and evenly dispersed. As expected, the BVO-BTO composites exhibited increased visible-light-driven photocatalytic performance for photo-degradation due to the advantages of BVO QDs. Moreover, the possible mechanism of BVO-BTO composites was studied by trapping experiment, photocurrent, UV–vis and so on. The results demonstrated that the BVO QDs can widen the light response range to visible region and hasten the charge transfer and separation. Thus, the photocatalytic activity was enhanced through the BVO QDs decorated on BTO, which provided a new idea for designing Bi-based materials.

Synergistically enhanced photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride by Z-scheme heterojunction MT-BiVO4 microsphere/P-doped g-C3N4 nanosheet composite

Xudong Yin,Xiaojie Sun,Yufeng Mao,Ruzhen Wang,Dehao Li,Wenyu Xie,Zhenghui Liu,Zhisen Liu

The elimination of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl) from water has attracted extensive research attention. This study hydrothermally synthesized composite photocatalysts composed of BiVO 4 microspheres containing coexisting phases of monoclinic scheelite (M-BiVO 4 ) and tetragonal zircon (T-BiVO 4 ), i.e., MT-BiVO 4 , loaded onto P-doped g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets (PCNS). Furthermore, their morphology, structure, and photoelectrochemical properties were comprehensively characterized, and the performance and stability of photocatalytic degradation of TC-HCl were examined. Additionally, the effects of humic acid (HA), coexisting anions/cations, and actual water samples on the degradation efficiency of TC-HCl were investigated, and the degradation mechanism and pathways were examined. The findings indicated that the percentage of M-BiVO 4 in MT-BiVO 4 considerably influences the photocatalytic activity of the composite catalyst. Furthermore, the excellent photocatalytic performance of 5% BVO/PCNS was attributed to the synergistic effects of P-doping the modified g-C 3 N 4 , MT-BiVO 4 isotype heterojunction effects, and the Z-scheme heterojunction constructed from MT-BiVO 4 and PCNS, which can enhance the absorption range of the visible light and accelerate the transfer and separation of charge carriers between catalysts. The free radical capture experiments and electron spin resonance tests indicated that holes and O 2 - were the dominant active species in the photocatalytic degradation process. With high reusability and stability, the 5% BVO/PCNS composite has great potential for practical wastewater treatment applications. This study offers a new approach for preparing photocatalysts synergized by isotype and Z-scheme heterojunctions.

Gd-BiVO4 photocatalyst for organic contaminants removal: Short-term synthesis at sub-100 °C and enhanced sunlight-driven photocatalytic activity

Hussein Abdelraouf,Jing Ding,Jiayi Ren,Guanshu Zhao,Fanyang Zhou,Shuyan Guan,Xuedong Zhai,Qingliang Zhao

A novel and short-term preparation method was conducted to fabricate pristine BiVO 4, and Gadolinium (Gd) doped BiVO 4 photocatalysts at sub-100 °C. The optical, structural, morphology, microstructure, and compositional characteristics of the fabricated photocatalysts were examined, which illustrated that the doping of Gd stabilized the existence of the tetragonal phase structure and enlarged the specific surface area of the pristine BiVO 4 . The comparison of the photocatalytic performance, preparation power consumption , and preparation cost showed the superiority of Gd doped BiVO 4 photocatalyst fabricated by the Short-Term Synthesis Method at sub-100 °C. The ofloxacin (OFL) removal rate with 5%, 7%, and 10% Gd-BiVO 4 photocatalysts was 1.53, 1.61, and 1.83 times that with pristine BiVO 4 under sunlight, respectively. The degradation performance of target contaminants, including diclofenac, tetracycline HCl , ofloxacin, rhodamine B, and sulfadiazine, was demonstrated after one hour of sunlight irradiation with 5% Gd-BiVO 4 , achieving the removal efficiencies of 98.63%, 98.07%, 97.98%, 92.09%, and 78.56%, respectively. The effect of various factors on the removal performance was revealed, indicating that SO 4 2− and H 2 PO 4 − had a remarkable inhibitory effect on the degradation. The 5% Gd-BiVO 4 also showed excellent reusability and stability after five-cycle runs. The photogenerated holes (h + ) and the superoxide radicals ( • O 2 − ) were the predominant generated active species , and the possible photocatalytic mechanism for the degradation of organic contaminants was proposed. Simple prepared Gd-BiVO 4 photocatalysts were revealed to be a practical and potential choice for efficiently degrading contaminants with sunlight as green energy.

Construction of dual Z-scheme UNiMOF/BiVO4/S-C3N4 photocatalyst for visible-light photocatalytic tetracycline degradation and Cr(VI) reduction

Jiabao Gu,Chaogang Ban,Jiazhi Meng,Qianwen Li,Xuanyu Long,Xiaohan Zhou,Nan Liu,Zequan Li

Rapid recombination of the photogenerated carrier, a limited range of photoexcitation, and unsatisfactory photocatalytic activity are the limiting factors in photocatalytic applications. Accelerating photogenerated carrier transfer and constructing surface active sites have become critical tasks. In this study, a dual Z-scheme UNiMOF/BiVO 4 /S-C 3 N 4 (NBSCN) photocatalyst with a 2D/3D/2D structure was successfully constructed. Under visible-light irradiation, NBSCN outperforms single and binary composites in photocatalytic tetracycline photodegradation and Cr(VI) photoreduction due to the synergistic effect of adsorption and photocatalysis. The maximum photocatalytic efficiency of tetracycline (90.1 %) and Cr(VI) (93.6 %) in 120 min was achieved by NBSCN-20 %. The exceptional photocatalytic activity of NBSCN-20 % can be attributed to the large specific surface area, increased active sites, improved visible-light absorption ranges, and the construction of heterojunctions. The fabricated dual Z-scheme heterojunction at the interface of NBSCN reduces the recombination rate of photogenerated carriers and widens the range of light absorption. NBSCN-20 % exhibits excellent stability in the process of cyclic experiments. On the basis of the results, the feasibility of the dual Z-scheme mechanism is proposed. This work demonstrates that NBSCN-20 % photocatalyst has promising application prospects in removing heavy-metal ions and organic pollutants from aqueous environments.

Synthesis of BiVO4/g-C3N4 S-scheme heterojunction via a rapid and green microwave route for efficient removal of glyphosate

Zengyue Chen,Yunfeng Li,Fei Tian,Xin Chen,Zhansheng Wu

In this work, a green reaction route for the preparation of BiVO 4 /g-C 3 N 4 composite is constructed using the acetic acid and reusable ethylene glycol system combined with the microwave method. The rice grain-like BiVO 4 is successfully deposited on the surface of hollow tubular g-C 3 N 4 to form a S-scheme heterojunction within 25 min. The performance of the prepared photocatalysts is evaluated by removing glyphosate, methyl orange and tetracycline   hydrochloride from simulated agricultural and urban runoff. The degradation evaluation results show that acetic acid in this route could play a better induction role compared to the conventional inducer nitric acid, while the ethylene glycol in this route can be recycled. The recovery of ethylene glycol could reach more than 85%, and the performance of the produced photocatalyst will not be decreased after the recovery of ethylene glycol reaches 20 times. The BV/CN 60 -R 20 sample has the highest photocatalytic activity for glyphosate removal under simulated sunlight irradiation, which is 14.5 times and 9.7 times higher than that of pure BiVO 4 and g-C 3 N 4 , respectively. In summary, the establishment of the ethylene glycol and acetic acid system not only provides a new perspective for the replacement of strong acids in the preparation of BiVO 4 -based photocatalyst but also provides a reference for the construction of other harmless and recyclable systems.

Hierarchical construction of a new Z-scheme Bi/BiVO4-CdS heterojunction for enhanced visible-light photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride

Yongtao Xue,Zengyue Chen,Zhansheng Wu,Fei Tian,Bing Yu

Developing cost-effective photocatalysts with efficient electron hole separation efficiency and excellent light absorption performance for the remediation of organic pollutants from wastewater is highly desirable. Herein, a new Z-Scheme Bi/BiVO 4 -CdS heterojunction with leaf-like morphology has been successfully fabricated for the first time and its application as a photocatalyst for the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) has been explored. Compared with BiVO 4 and Bi/BiVO 4 , the as-prepared Bi/BiVO 4 -CdS exhibits improved light absorption capacity and electron-hole separation efficiency, and it has a superior performance of photocatalytic degradation of TCH. The degradation ratio of TCH by Bi/BiVO 4 -CdS based photocatalysis reaches 85.5% within 30 min. The rate constant of TCH degradation for Bi/BiVO 4 -CdS is 1.32 and 1.18 times of the BiVO 4 and Bi/BiVO 4 , respectively. In addition, Bi/BiVO 4 -CdS displays a high stability without obvious decay for its TCH degradation efficiency (<5%) during four recycles. The ESR characterization and reactive species trapping experiments indicates that the generated h + , •O 2 – , and •OH from Bi/BiVO 4 -CdS based photocatalysis are responsible for TCH degradation. Since several intermediates are identified by HPLC-MS, the pathways for Bi/BiVO 4 -CdS based photocatalytic degradation of TCH are proposed.

Study on cobalt-phosphate (Co-Pi) modified BiVO4/Cu2O photoanode to significantly inhibit photochemical corrosion and improve the photoelectrochemical performance

Xue Li,Jinquan Wan,Yongwen Ma,Yan Wang,Xitong Li

The serious recombination of photogenerated carriers and the photochemical corrosion of the electrode extremely restricted its photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance, which could not reach the theoretical photocurrent intensity. However, so far, there are few comprehensive reports on the mechanism of corrosion inhibition and stability improvement of electrodes in photocatalytic degradation. In this paper, BiVO 4 /Cu 2 O heterojunction modified by Cobalt-phosphate (Co-Pi) co-catalyst was successfully prepared to address the aforementioned issues. Co-Pi completed the holes capture and release process through the change of its own chemical state (Co 2+/3+ →Co 4+ →Co 2+/3+ ), and also affected the energy band bending of the BiVO 4 /Cu 2 O heterojunction. In addition, the effect mechanism of the Co-Pi film thickness on the PEC performance of the photoanode was systematically discussed in this report. When the deposition amount was 0.05C∙cm −2 , the photocurrent density reached 2.22 mA∙cm −2 at 1.23 V (vs. RHE), which was 2.8 times that of bare BiVO 4 . The LSV curves, EIS and UV–vis absorption spectra reveal the enhanced PEC performance and light stability of the prepared electrode materials. When it is applied to photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants, BiVO 4 /Cu 2 O/0.05Co-Pi shows high activity and potential for MB and CIP degradation, and is expected to be stably applied to the field of photocatalytic degradation of refractory organic pollutants in water.

Efficient ammonia removal and toxic chlorate control by using BiVO4/WO3 heterojunction photoanode in a self-driven PEC-chlorine system

Yan Zhang,Youzhi Ji,Jinhua Li,Jing Bai,Shuai Chen,Linsen Li,Jiachen Wang,Tingsheng Zhou,Panyu Jiang,Xiaohong Guan,Baoxue Zhou

The efficient removal of ammonia is a difficult issue in wastewater treatment because ammonia is easily converted to nitrate instead of N 2 . The oxidation of ammonia by chlorine radical (Cl ) is recognized as an effective method. However, the massive generation of toxic byproducts chlorate and nitrate pose great risk for its practical application due to the excessive oxidation capacity of hydroxyl radical. Herein, we propose a novel method to selectively generate Cl for efficient ammonia removal using BiVO 4 /WO 3 photoanode in a self-driven photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) system. Cl was predominantly produced by regulating the valence band edge of WO 3 though modifying BiVO 4 , which tuned the moderate oxidative force of hole to reduce OH generation and thereby inhibited the formation of chlorate and nitrate. The self-driven ammonia degradation was achieved by employing BiVO 4 /WO 3 and Si photovoltaic cells as composite photoanodes to improve light-absorption and electron-hole separation, thus enhancing Cl production. These results showed that 10 mg L −1 of ammonia-N was completely removed (99.3 %) in 120 min with 80.1 % of total nitrogen removal. Toxic byproducts chlorate and nitrate were inhibited by 79.3 % and 31 %, respectively, compared to WO 3 . This work provides new insights to develop efficient, energy-saving and environment-friendly method for ammonia pollution treatment.

Synergetic tuning of photocatalytic activity and photostability of Ag3PO4 via yttrium doping, carbon quantum dots and BiVO4 for atenolol degradation

Yifei Wang,Jing Niu,Xin Gao,Yanlin Zhang

In this study, Y-doped Ag 3 PO 4 , carbon quantum dots (CQDs), BiVO 4 were used to synthesize Z-scheme Y-Ag 3 PO 4 /CQDs/BiVO 4 . X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS) were employed to probe into the crystalline structure, morphology, optical property and chemical composition of Y-Ag 3 PO 4 /CQDs/BiVO 4 . The kinetic constant of the prepared Y-Ag 3 PO 4 /CQDs/BiVO 4 was approximately 2.8 times that of pristine Ag 3 PO 4 for atenolol degradation. The degradation of atenolol mainly depended on the excited holes, •OH and •O 2 − . The photocatalysis mechanism of Y-Ag 3 PO 4 /CQDs/BiVO 4 conforms to the Z-scheme mechanism deduced by reactive species trapping experiment, electron spin resonance (ESR) and photoelectrochemical measurement (photocurrent response and EIS). The introduction of yttrium, CQDs and BiVO 4 significantly promoted the photogenerated carriers separation of Ag 3 PO 4 and inhibited the photogenerated electron-holes pairs recombination of Ag 3 PO 4 during the degradation of atenolol. Oxygen defects caused by the doping of Y 3+ into Ag 3 PO 4 were the centers of capture of photogenerated electrons to generate •O 2 − , inhibiting the recombination of photogenerated electron-holes pairs and the photocorrosion of Ag 3 PO 4 .

Simultaneous Cr(VI) reduction and bisphenol A degradation by a 3D Z-scheme Bi2S3-BiVO4 graphene aerogel under visible light

Qianwei Liang,Sittipranee Ploychompoo,Jingda Chen,Tingting Zhou,Hanjin Luo

Rational design strategy and facile synthesis method of photocatalysts with high efficiency and stability have been still a significant challenge for the removal of environmental contaminants. In this study, a three dimensional (3D) all-solid-state Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalytic system containing bismuth sulphide (Bi 2 S 3 ) and bismuth vanadate (BiVO 4 ) was constructed as Bi 2 S 3 -BiVO 4 graphene aerogel (SVGA) by a facile hydrothermal method. The potential application of as-synthesized SVGA was demonstrated to remove Cr(VI) and bisphenol A (BPA) simultaneously in aqueous media via the synergy of adsorption and photocatalysis under visible light irradiation. The removal rates of Cr(VI) and BPA both nearly reached 100% after adsorption for 40 min and photocatalysis for 120 min under visible light (λ > 420 nm), which was much better than the removal efficiency of individual Bi 2 S 3 and BiVO 4 , as well as Bi 2 S 3 graphene aerogel (SGA) and BiVO 4 graphene aerogel (VGA) samples. The rGO played an important role as photoinduced electron transfer mediator between Bi 2 S 3 and BiVO 4 , which promoted the photogenerated electrons transfer efficiency and enhanced photocatalytic ability of SVGA efficiently. The harmful Cr(VI) was conserved into hypotoxic Cr(III) and BPA was degraded into CO 2 and H 2 O after photocatalysis on SVGA, and the fabricated SVGA also presented favorable stability and satisfactory application effect in practical water samples, implied that such photocatalyst has a promising application for simultaneous removal of heavy metals and organics from aqueous environment.

Yi Zhou,Zhiyue Chen,Jiaxin Li,Minghui Xiang,Yinghong Zhou,Jiangtao Niu,Jin Zhang

Design and construction of a heterojunction structured photocatalyst with efficient electron transfer is of great significance. In this work, we prepared a unique Z-scheme Ag/Agln 5 S 8 /BiVO 4 photocatalyst of which BiVO 4 has highly exposed (040) crystal facets. Ag as an electronic medium to build a special and efficient electron transfer path. In addition, the surface plasmon resonance effect of Ag improves the sunlight utilization of photocatalyst, and Ag as an electron transport medium and co-catalyst enhances the photocatalytic ability of the photocatalyst. Under optimum reaction conditions, the loading of AgIn 5 S 8 is 30%, the reaction rate constants of tetracycline degradation over Ag/BA-30% were 1.96 and 5.58 times of pure BiVO 4 and AgIn 5 S 8 . The possible Z-scheme electron-hole pair transfer mechanism was presented through the capture experiment. It is suggested that ·O 2 − , h + and ·OH are engaged in the degradation of TC. And the prepared photocatalysts were proved to have a potential application value after four consecutive cycles.
