Synthesis of robust superhydrophobic EP/F-CNTs/SiO2 composite coating with excellent anti-corrosion and wear-resistant property

Zhou Jie,Su Jingying,Su Fenghua,Zhao Tianxin,Li Ji,Yang Pengfei,Zhang Qingyu

At present, superhydrophobic coatings have a wide range of applications in self-cleaning, drag reduction, and corrosion protection. However, their poor mechanical stability has a significant impact on the service life and effectiveness of the coatings. In addressing this challenge, this study introduced epoxy resin (EP) with high strength and strong adhesion as the resin matrix. The composite coating, synthesized through a straightforward spraying technique, incorporates modified carbon nanotubes (F-CNTs) and hydrophobic fumed nanosilica (SiO 2 ) as fillers. The robust EP/F-CNTs/SiO 2 superhydrophobic coating exhibited excellent anti-rubbing ability and superadhesion strength, which was attributed to the EP intermediate layer significantly enhancing the adhesion strength between the coating and the stainless steel substrate with a remarkable adhesion grade of one. Tafel and EIS test results revealed a corrosion inhibition efficiency of up to 99.75% for the coating. The exceptional corrosion resistance of the coating is attributed to the outstanding electron transfer capability of F-CNTs. In addition, the coating could resist corrosion from strong acids and bases. It is believed that the facile and low-cost method offers an effective strategy and promising industrial applications for fabricating robust and super anti-corrosion superhydrophobic surfaces on various metallic materials.

Achieving CNTs Growth by Inducing Nanoparticle Nucleation via Non-Active Fe2O3 Clusters Anchored on the α-Al2O3 Surface

Peng Wang,Qianpeng Dong,Chenyu Gao,Lianlian Wang,Ruiliang Wang,Dianming Chu,Wenjuan Bai,Yan He

This research presents a regulation strategy of constructing a heterogeneous bilayer catalyst of Fe and Al2O3, namely, Fe–Al2O3, through interfacial interaction and particle nucleation, in order to modulate the size and catalytic activity of Fe sites and achieve the growth of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Through temperature control, the noncatalytically active Fe2O3 clusters on the surface of Al2O3 are exposed, inducing multiple nucleation of Fe clusters on its surface. Under the synergistic effect of the confinement at the Fe–Al2O3 interface, the fabrication of small Fe nanoparticles is accomplished. The results indicate that the catalytically active Fe nanoparticles have a diameter of approximately 10 nm, and the grown CNTs have a diameter of approximately 15 nm. Based on the systematic characterization results, the nonactive Fe2O3 clusters confined by strong interfacial interaction induce multiple nucleation of Fe on their surface during multiple loading processes, facilitating the formation of nanoparticles. Additionally, the strong interaction between Al2O3 and Fe induces the formation of FeAl4O8, thereby enhancing the thermal stability of the nanoparticles. In conclusion, the targeted regulation of the interfacial interaction of the catalyst active sites offers guidance for the low-cost and large-scale preparation of small nanoparticle catalyst particles.

Shenquan Yang,Baowei Qiu,Mushan Yuan,Zheng Liu,Hang Jia,Binbin Sun,Haichao Meng,Xiaochuang Di,Yang Chen,Weiyi Kong,Huawei Zou

Fiber-reinforced thermosetting polyimide-based composites have broad application prospects in the aerospace field, which makes it particularly important to optimize their preparation process and improve their electromagnetic (EM) wave absorption performance. In this study, quartz fiber/polyimide@carbon nanotubes (QF/PI@CNTs) prepregs with uniform resin distribution and controllable content were prepared through in-situ polymerization combined with a film-coating method. These prepregs were subsequently laminated and molded by vacuum hot-pressing to obtain composites integrating EM absorption and high-load bearing capability. The QF/PI@CNTs composite at a low filler ratio (3 wt% CNTs), by constructing a stable three-dimensional conductive network and inducing multi-scale interfacial polarization effects, demonstrated excellent EM wave absorption. Specifically, the QF/PI@C-3 composite achieved full-frequency absorption across the entire X-band from 25 °C (2.98 mm) to 300 °C (2.01mm), while maintaining an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) covering 88% of the X-band at 400 °C (1.78mm). The minimum reflection loss (RL min ) improved from -26.42 dB at 25 °C to -70.35 dB at 100 °C, and remained -29.17 dB at 200 °C. Moreover, the composite also has a relatively high thermal decomposition temperature (T d5% =557 °C) and flexural strength (501.8 ± 22.9 MPa). This research provides feasible insights for the design of structural integrated materials with high-temperature EM absorption capability.

Janus-structured nanocomposite films constructed with Ca2+ bridging TOCNF/CNTs networks for enhancing electromagnetic shielding and mechanical properties

Xinxin Cai,Jiayi Li,Xinqi Wang,Ruixiang Zhou,Bin Wang,Shudong Lin

With the advancement of 5G communications, the Internet of Things (IoT), and wearable electronics, there has been an increasing demand for lightweight, flexible, and high-performance electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials. In this study, AgNWs/TOCNF/CNTs* nanocomposite films with Janus structure were successfully prepared by vacuum-assisted filtration followed by hot pressing. The film consisted of a conductive silver nanowire (AgNWs) layer and a supporting TOCNF/CNTs* layer. Specifically, the electromagnetic shielding and mechanical properties were effectively enhanced by constructing a three-dimensional (3D) network within the TOCNF/CNTs* layer through ionic crosslinking between Ca 2+ ions and carboxylate anions (−COO − ). Comprehensive characterization demonstrated that the film possessed excellent mechanical strength (tensile strength of 93.92 ± 3.20 MPa), superior electrical conductivity (67,114 S/m), outstanding EMI shielding effectiveness (EMI SET of 63.70 dB, EMI SEE/t exceeding 10,284 dB·cm 2 /g, and a shielding efficiency of 99.999957 %), as well as rapid Joule heating response under low voltage (2.0 V, reaching 115.60°C within less than 6s). These properties underscore the film’s strong potential for applications in portable electronics, aerospace, and military technologies.

Synergistic Defect Engineering and Interface Stability of Activated Carbon Nanotubes Enabling Ultralong Lifespan All-Solid-State Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Cheng Wang,Yue Wu,Jing Gao,Xiaolin Sun,Qing Zhao,Wenyan Si,Yuan Zhang,Kun Wang,Fuhua Zhao,Takeo Ohsaka,Futoshi Matsumoto,Changshui Huang,Jianfei Wu

Due to the high energy density, high safety, and low cost of sulfur, all-solid-state lithium–sulfur batteries (ASSLSBs) are considered one of the most promising next-generation energy storage devices. Nevertheless, the insufficient interfacial contact between solid electrolytes (SEs) and the active material of sulfur leads to inadequate electronic and ionic conduction, which increases interfacial resistance and capacity decay. In this paper, commercial carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are activated to form porous-CNTs (P-CNTs), which are used as sulfur-bearing matrix, forming S@P-CNTs-based composite cathodes for ASSLSBs. Compared with CNTs, P-CNTs possess a larger specific surface area and more oxygen-containing groups, providing enhanced interfacial contact and stability between S@P-CNTs and Li6PS5Cl SE, which are confirmed by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations. Moreover, P-CNTs can form a 3D conductive network in the composite cathodes, facilitating the migration of electrons and the diffusion of ions, as well as improving the utilization of sulfur. As a result, the S@P-CNTs-based ASSLSBs display excellent electrochemical performances, especially rarely reported ultralong lifespan, which deliver a capacity of 1099.2 mA h g–1 at a current density of 1.34 mA cm–2, and remarkably maintain 70.4% of the initial capacity over 1400 cycles.

In situ synthesis of CNTs@Ti3C2 hybrid structures by microwave irradiation for high-performance anodes in lithium ion batteries

W. Zheng,P. Zhang,J. Chen,W. B. Tian,Y. M. Zhang,Z. M. Sun

To stabilize the layer structures of MXenes, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been successfully grown in situ by a facile microwave irradiation method under ambient conditions. The synthesized composites based on various MXenes including Ti3C2, Ti2C and V2C exhibited hybrid structures with uniformly distributed multi-walled CNTs anchored on the layer structured MXene networks. Benefiting from the unique structural features, these composites exhibit excellent electrochemical properties as anode materials in lithium ion batteries. The CNTs@Ti3C2 composite exhibits high reversible capacities of 430 mA h g−1 at 1 A g−1 and 175 mA h g−1 at 10 A g−1 (31.25 C), and is not only better than the pristine Ti3C2 (99 mA h g−1 and 45 mA h g−1, respectively), but also superior to the recently reported MXene composites. The impressive electrochemical performance is attributed to the synergetic effects of the connective CNT bridges, large-capacity metal/metal oxides and the fine conductive MXene matrix. This in situ growth strategy of CNTs shows great potential in modulating the structure and properties of nanomaterials for advanced applications.

Nickel-doped CNTs composite as cathode by sulfur vapor deposition for high-performance all-solid-state lithium‑sulfur batteries

Wenyan Si,Jing Gao,Yuan Gao,Fuhua Zhao,Yuan Zhang,Xiaolin Sun,Jianfei Wu

Shuttle effect of polysulfide in the cathode and the safety issues arising from dendrite formation at Li metal anode are the main challenges of traditional liquid lithium‑sulfur batteries. In order to solve the shuttle effect and prevent short circuit, the all-solid-state lithium‑sulfur battery (ASSLSB) is proposed. However, the huge volume expansion of sulfur and the improvement of sulfur conversion efficiency during charge and discharge, which could lead to the limitation of electrochemical performance. Herein, a homogeneous Ni-doped carbon-nanotubes (H-Ni-SVD@CNT) composite cathode of ASSLSB is prepared by sulfur vapor deposition to confine sulfur and promote the conversion of sulfur and Li 2 S. In this work, SVD-5-S@CNT composite cathode demonstrates high reversible discharge capacity of 1001.1 mAh g −1 after 127 cycles and capacity retention rate of 78.6 % at the rate of 0.1C and 60 °C. Moreover, H-Ni-SVD@CNT composite cathode exhibits superior electrochemical performance, displaying the discharge specific capacity of 1519.3 mAh g −1 at 0.1C and 60 °C. Meanwhile, the discharge specific capacity of H-Ni-SVD@CNT composite cathode is 1060.9 mAh g −1 at room temperature. The synergistic effect of physical confinement and chemical catalysis improves the electrochemical performance of the all-solid-state lithium‑sulfur battery. This work proposes a new strategy for the cathode structure design of the all-solid-state lithium‑sulfur battery.

Bamboo-structured N-doped CNTs/FeF3·0.33H2O derived from melamine as a high-performance cathode for Li-ion batteries

Jing Ding,Xiangyang Zhou,Chucheng Luo,Juan Yang,Jingjing Tang

FeF3·0.33H2O with a special one-dimension tunnel structure has been considered as a potential cathode material. However, the low electron conductivity of FeF3·0.33H2O prevents its practical application. FeF3·0.33H2O coupled with a carbon material is an effective method to solve the low electric conductivity of FeF3·0.33H2O. Hence, we apply a facile approach using the catalyzed pyrolysis of melamine and a fluorination–annealing process to synthesize the N-doped CNTs/FeF3·0.33H2O composite with a bamboo-like morphology. The as-prepared composite displays a good cycling performance with a reversible discharge capacity of 160.7 mA h g−1 at 40 mA g−1 after 100 cycles and a good rate performance, as well as a good electrochemical performance even at a relatively high mass loading. The good electrochemical properties can be mainly ascribed to the fact that N-doped CNTs play the role of a cross-linked conductive network to provide an electron-transport expressway in the active material. This simple catalyzed pyrolysis and fluorination–annealing approach provides a promising avenue for the application of iron fluoride as a cathode material.

Robust and multifunctional sucrose-derived biocarbon aerogel reinforced by CNTs for integrated mechanical property, thermal insulation and oil adsorption

Shiqi Wu,Jiahao Shi,Daming Chen,Xinghong Zhang,Wei Wang,Aimei You,Ruixia Yuan

Green bio-carbon aerogels were fabricated by freeze-drying and heat treatment. • Sucrose-chitosan-CNTs synergy boosts mechanical strength and thermal insulation. • Aerogel shows high strength (2.18 MPa) and low thermal conductivity (64.8 mW/m·K). • Aerogel has high oil adsorption capacity and durability (11.35 g/g after 20 cycles). Driven by the "dual carbon" goal and demand for fossil carbon alternatives, biocarbon aerogels have become a research focus for their renewability and environmentally friendly. However, most biocarbon aerogels suffer from uncontrollable pore structure, huge high-temperature volume shrinkage and poor performance synergy. Herein, chitosan (CS) and sucrose were used as the carbon skeleton to fabricate green sucrose/CS/carbon nanotube (CNTs) composite biocarbon aerogels via freeze-drying and high-heat treatment. CS’s 3D cross-linked network effectively suppressed the uncontrolled foaming of sucrose, thus enabling precise microstructure regulation of the composite biocarbon aerogel. By utilizing the structural support of CNTs, the composite biocarbon aerogel achieved simultaneous optimization of the mechanical and thermal insulation performance. After heat-treated at 1200 °C, the composite biocarbon aerogel exhibited low density (0.0773–0.1226 g/cm 3 ), high porosity (87.66%–91.88%), excellent compressive strength (0.77–12.09 MPa) and a maximum specific compressive strength of 17.79 MPa·cm 3 ·g −1 . Besides, the thermal conductivity reached as low as 0.0648 W/m·K at 25 °C, and only raised to 0.1644 W/m·K at 900 °C. Moreover, the material also showed high oil absorption capacity and ideal combustion recyclability. The synergistically multifunctional composite carbon aerogels exhibit application potential in aerospace thermal insulation and oil spill remediation, offering insights for designing multifunctional biomass carbon aerogels. Hook-and-Loop-Inspired CNTs/CNFs Structure for Flexible Strain Sensors With Ultra-High Sensitivity and Wide Sensing Range

Junjie Tang,Chenling Wu,Taihong Wang,Ming Zhang

The morphology and propagation behavior of channel cracks significantly influence the performance of crack-based thin film strain sensors. To date, flexible strain sensors still face a conflict between sensitivity and sensing range, which severely hinders their applications in flexible wearable electronics. Inspired by the hook-and-loop structure, this work proposed a multiscale design strategy and successfully constructed a composite film with a multi-path network structure via in situ growth of curved carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on carbon nanofibers (CNFs). Through the design of a micro-nano hierarchical structure, CNTs/CNFs sensor exhibits a segmental ultra-high sensitivity with a gauge factor of 5679.4 within the 120%–163% strain range, alongside a broad overall sensing range of up to 163%. The dense conductive network and bridging behavior of CNTs/CNFs film effectively resolves the problem of sensing failure in strain sensors under large strain, exhibiting excellent sensing performance over the entire monitoring range. Finally, we demonstrated the applications of CNTs/CNFs sensor with rapid response/recovery time and good sensing stability in encrypted information transmission, showing its great potential in the fields of health monitoring, human-machine interaction, and secure information transmission.

Polydopamine-Mediated Anchoring of Pd on Magnetic Ni@CNTs: A Robust Core–Shell Nanocatalyst for Recyclable Heck Cross-Coupling

Rui Yu,Yuli Lan,Guoliang Huang,Congmei Chen,Maofei Ran,Wenjing Sun

The development of high-performance, magnetically recyclable nanocatalysts remains challenging, primarily due to the poor stability and inadequate control over active metal dispersion in conventional magnetic supports. To address these limitations, we designed a Ni@CNTs@PDA–Pd catalyst through innovative interfacial engineering. Carbon nanotube channels effectively encapsulate and protect magnetic nickel nanoparticles, while a polydopamine (PDA) coating enables uniform dispersion of palladium nanoparticles (2.0 ± 0.7   nm). The catalyst exhibits strong superparamagnetism (6.64   emu·g⁻¹), allowing efficient magnetic separation. In Heck reactions, it achieves a turnover frequency (TOF) of 958   h⁻¹ and retains 89.5% conversion after ten cycles, outperforming most reported Pd/CNT and magnetic catalysts. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that although Ni encapsulation increases the electron density of the CNT surface—which may hinder Pd deposition—the PDA interlayer counteracts this effect via strong coordination bonds, ensuring excellent Pd stabilization. This study provides key insights into electronic metal–support interactions and offers a scalable strategy for designing high-performance magnetically recyclable catalysts. It highlights the active role of the magnetic core in modulating the electronic environment of catalytic sites and underscores the critical synergy between the core, shell, and active metal in rational catalyst design.
