Adsorption of Cd (II) by a novel living and non-living Cupriavidus necator GX_5: optimization, equilibrium and kinetic studies

Li Xingjie,Xiao Qiusheng,Shao Qin,Li Xiaopeng,Kong Jiejie,Liu Liyan,Zhao Zhigang,Li Rungen

Biosorbents have been extensively studied for heavy metal adsorption due to their advantages of low cost and high efficiency. In the study, the living and non-living biomass of Cupriavidus necator GX_5 previously isolated were evaluated for their adsorption capacity and/or removal efficiency for Cd (II) through batch experiments, SEM and FT-IR investigations. The maximum removal efficiency rates for the live and dead biomass were 60.51% and 78.53%, respectively, at an optimum pH of 6, a dosage of 1 g/L and an initial Cd (II) concentration of 5 mg/L. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model was more suitable for fitting the experimental data, indicating that the rate-limiting step might be chemisorption. The Freundlich isotherm model fit better than the Langmuir isotherm model, implying that the adsorption process of both biosorbents was heterogeneous. FT-IR observation reflected that various functional groups were involved in Cd (II) adsorption: –OH, –NH, C=O, C–O and C–C groups for the living biomass and –OH, –NH, C–H, C = O, C–N and N–H groups for the dead biomass. Our results imply that non-living biosorbents have a higher capacity and stronger strength for absorbing Cd (II) than living biomass. Therefore, we suggest that dead GX_5 is a promising adsorbent and can be used in Cd (II)-contaminated environments.

Enhanced solidification/stabilization of Pb and Cd in contaminated farmland soils using graphene quantum dots: A multi-scale study

Yufei Gao,Zhao Gao,Qiqi Zheng,Jinjie Lv,Chuang He,Wenjie Zhang,Lei Xu,Haijie He

Cement-based solidification/stabilization (S/S) is an effective technique for remediating heavy metal-contaminated soils, yet its practical application in farmland is constrained by the high cement dosage commonly required and the limited chemical stabilization capacity of conventional systems. In this study, highly dispersible graphene quantum dots (GQDs) are introduced as multifunctional additives to enhance the S/S performance of ordinary Portland cement toward Pb- and Cd-contaminated soils at a cement dosage of 15 wt%. The incorporation of GQDs markedly improves heavy metal immobilization, and the optimum dosage of 0.4 wt% reduces the leaching concentrations of Pb and Cd by 81.7% and 84.4%, respectively, compared with the control sample. Meanwhile, Tessier fractionation shows that GQDs promote the transformation of both metals from labile fractions to more stable forms, with the residual fractions of Pb and Cd increasing from 37.53% to 42.74% and from 49.87% to 56.39%, respectively. Multi-scale characterization further reveals the underlying enhancement mechanism. XRD, FTIR, TG/DTG, and SEM analyses demonstrate that GQDs accelerate cement hydration, promote the formation of C–S–H gel, and refine the microstructure, thereby generating a denser solidified matrix that strengthens physical encapsulation. In parallel, aqueous removal experiments provide supporting evidence for the direct interaction between GQDs and heavy metal ions, while molecular dynamics simulations further reveal GQD-metal interfacial interactions at the atomic scale. These results demonstrate that GQDs enhance heavy metal immobilization through the synergistic effects of hydration promotion and surface chemical interaction, offering an effective strategy for developing high-efficiency low-cement S/S systems for contaminated farmland soil remediation.

Enhanced Cd(II) Removal by Nano-Fe3O4/Alginate-Immobilized Shewanella-Serratia Consortium: Adsorption Performance, Reusability, and Preliminary Mechanistic Interpretation

Yan Shiying,Zhang Jian,Liu Yimeng,Chen Yiping,Jiang Tianlan,Gao Yu,Zhang Jie,Gao Jingqi,Li Fosheng,Zhao Jian,Feng Su

This study presents a composite biosorbent, Nano-Fe—SA—XB, synthesized by immobilizing a consortium of Shewanella putrefaciens and Serratia sp. B16 (XB) within a sodium alginate (SA) matrix reinforced with Nano-Fe 3 O 4 (Nano-Fe). A preliminary orthogonal formulation screening identified 4% Nano-Fe, 4% SA, 30 g/L XB biomass, and 4 h crosslinking as the selected preparation condition. At pH 7, using a wet dosage of 0.6 g (equivalent to a calculated dry mass of ~ 0.03 g), Nano-Fe—SA—XB achieved an 80.51% removal efficiency at a 20 mg/L initial Cd(II) concentration. Normalized to dry weight, the experimental maximum adsorption capacity was 72.5 mg/g at 150 mg/L, while the Langmuir-estimated capacity reached 87.8 mg/g. Kinetic and isotherm fitting suggested that Cd(II) uptake was consistent with pseudo-second-order kinetics and Sips/Langmuir-type adsorption behavior. SEM–EDS and FTIR analyses suggested that Cd(II) removal was associated with surface complexation and ion-exchange interactions involving hydroxyl, amide/carboxyl, phosphate, and calcium-containing sites. XRD showed no detectable new crystalline Cd-containing precipitates after adsorption. The material also showed NaCl-regeneration potential and 30-day Cd(II) retention/release stability. Overall, Nano-Fe—SA—XB shows potential as a reusable biosorbent for Cd(II)-contaminated water, while further mechanical, thermodynamic, surface-charge, pore-structure, magnetic, and chemical-state characterization is still needed. Regulation of Thermal Degradation and Char Evolution of Polypropylene by Core–Shell MF@β-CD and Amino-Modified Attapulgite

Jiangtao Guo,Hongxiang Ou,Wenqian Zhou,Honglai Xue,Fang Zhu,Weikang Liu

In this work, a core–shell flame retardant (MF@β-CD) was prepared by coating β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) with melamine-formaldehyde (MF) resin through in situ polymerization. Amino-functionalized attapulgite (ATP-NH 2 ) was also prepared via silane modification. MF@β-CD and ATP-NH 2 were incorporated with piperazine pyrophosphate (PAPP) to fabricate flame-retardant PP composites through melt blending. The incorporation of MF@β-CD and ATP-NH 2 improved the fire performance and thermal stability of PP composites. The PP composite containing the MF@β-CD/ATP-NH 2 system exhibited a limiting oxygen index (LOI) of 33.8% and achieved a UL-94 V-0 rating. Compared with neat PP, the peak heat release rate and total smoke production decreased by 91.9% and 87.7%, respectively. Thermal analysis and char characterization suggested that the MF@β-CD/ATP-NH 2 system promoted the formation of a more continuous and stable char layer during combustion. The MF shell contributed to improved interfacial compatibility between β-CD and the PP matrix, while ATP-NH 2 helped maintain the integrity of the char structure. This work provides a feasible approach for improving the fire safety and condensed-phase stability of PP using bio-based flame-retardant components. Graphical Core–shell structured MF@β-CD was prepared via in situ polymerization and combined with amino-modified attapulgite (ATP-NH 2 ) and piperazine pyrophosphate (PAPP) to synergistically modify polypropylene (PP). The optimized composite achieved a limiting oxygen index (LOI) of 33.8% and a UL-94 V-0 rating. The incorporation of ATP-NH 2 resulted in a distinct lamellar stacking structure on the char residue surface, with the layered silicate sheets of ATP-NH 2 uniformly embedded in the organic char matrix. This enhanced the structural stability and thermal shock resistance of the char layer, preventing its cracking and peeling during high-temperature combustion.

Chemical pressure effect on the magnetic properties of the ?=12 structural screw chain antiferromagnets ?⁢Co2⁢(Te3⁢O8)⁢(SO4) (?=Hg,Cd)

M. Y. Cui,Z. Y. Zhao,Z. Y. Wu,J. F. Wang,Z. Z. He

Chemical substitution is an effective route to manipulate the magnetic exchange couplings and modify the magnetic properties. However, replacement between ${\mathrm{Cd}}^{2+}$ and ${\mathrm{Hg}}^{2+}$ cations, both belonging to IIB group in the periodic table but having quite close ionic radii, is rarely studied. In this work, the chemical-pressure effect in $A{\mathrm{Co}}_{2}({\mathrm{Te}}_{3}{\mathrm{O}}_{8})({\mathrm{SO}}_{4})\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}(A=\mathrm{Hg},\mathrm{Cd})$ is reported, which is an $S=1/2$ structural screw-chain antiferromagnetic series with two unique Co positions. Magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and high-field magnetization measurements on both polycrystal samples suggest that Hg compound experiences two successive antiferromagnetic transitions at ${T}_{\mathrm{N}1}=25.5\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$ and ${T}_{\mathrm{N}2}=21.5\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$ in zero field, and multiple field-induced transitions at ${B}_{1}=10.5\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\mathrm{T}, {B}_{2}=13\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\mathrm{T}$, and ${B}_{3}=19.5\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\mathrm{T}$ at 1.6 K. By contrast, a single magnetic transition takes place at ${T}_{\mathrm{N}}=20$ K and ${B}_{\mathrm{c}}=10.7\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\mathrm{T}$ in Cd compound. Different twists of ${\mathrm{CoO}}_{6}$ octahedra are discussed to be responsible for the distinct magnetic behaviors. To further understand the influence of the chemical pressure, additional anisotropic characterizations are performed on Hg single crystal and subsequently the magnetic field $\mathrm{versus}$ temperature phase diagrams are established. Large magnetic anisotropy is observed with the moments lying within the $bc$ plane. Besides, a possible field-induced order-disorder transition is uncovered under the application of a magnetic field along the $b$ axis. The opposite features of the anisotropic magnetic susceptibility in Hg compound might demonstrate separate antiferromagnetic orders of the two Co sublattices, the discrepancy of which is reduced due to the weakened twist of ${\mathrm{CoO}}_{6}$ octahedra in Cd compound, leading to a simultaneous occurrence of these transitions instead.

CD-MOF-assisted phase transfer combined with SERS for rapid and eco-friendly detection of zearalenone in edible oil

Haoxiang Liu,Zhenjiong Wang,Lihua Zhou,Weiwei Cheng,Peng Li,Di Wu,Linghan Meng,Yan Zhang,Xiaozhi Tang

A novel and eco-friendly ZEN phase transfer method was developed using CD-MOF. • Amphiphilic character of CD-MOF promotes transfer of ZEN from oil to aqueous phase. • CTAB micelles on Au NRs facilitated adsorption of hydrophobic ZEN to its hotspot. • Rapid SERS sensing of ZEN was achieved based on this novel pretreatment method. An eco-friendly phase-transfer method based on cyclodextrin-metal-organic framework (CD-MOF) was developed to extract zearalenone (ZEN) from edible oil into aqueous phase. Leveraging this green pretreatment approach, a rapid surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) sensing platform was established for ZEN detection. CD-MOF possesses an amphiphilic structure, whose hydrophobic cavities can encapsulate ZEN to form host-guest complexes. The gradual structural collapse of CD-MOF leads to the release of ZEN into the aqueous phase, achieving efficient oil-to-water transfer with an extraction efficiency of 80–90%. Following this extraction method, SERS detection was achieved using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)-capped gold nanorods (Au NRs). The CTAB bilayer on the Au NR surface facilitates the adsorption of hydrophobic ZEN toward the plasmonic hotspots, significantly enhancing the Raman signal. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of CD-MOF extraction and Au NRs-based SERS enhancement, rapid detection of ZEN in corn oil was achieved with performance comparable to that of conventional high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). A synergy strategy of deep eutectic solvents and boric acid modified β-CD polymer for enhancing enantioseparation in HPLC

Xiaoqian Yuan,Ziyi Cheng,Jiajia Fu,Wanting Duan,Yuchen Cui,Ruijun Tang,Xinru Wang,Youxin Li

Background Enantiomeric separation is essential in pharmaceutical analysis because enantiomers can differ markedly in pharmacological activity, metabolism, and safety. HPLC using chiral mobile-phase additives (CMPAs), particularly cyclodextrin-based selectors, provides a flexible and cost-effective alternative to dedicated chiral stationary phases. However, conventional cyclodextrin CMPA systems are often limited by insufficient stereodiscrimination under aqueous-organic mobile-phase conditions, where solvation and weak noncovalent interactions can restrict chiral recognition. This study explores the potential of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as auxiliary mobile-phase modifiers for enhancing enantioseparation in β-cyclodextrin polymer-based HPLC chiral mobile phase analysis. Results Seven DESs with different hydrogen-bond donor/acceptor compositions and molar ratios were prepared and characterized by FT-IR, 1 H NMR, DSC, viscosity, and column-pressure measurements. The DESs were incorporated into HPLC-CMPA systems containing boric acid-modified β-cyclodextrin polymer (BA-β-CDP) and four other cyclodextrin derivatives as chiral selectors. The DES-assisted BA-β-CDP system improved the resolution of all ten chiral analytes. The resolutions of chlorpheniramine, propranolol, metoprolol, and bisoprolol increased by 17.16, 14.61, 12.63, and 8.86, respectively. Furthermore, danshensu, salbutamol, naringin and neohesperidin achieved complete separation with Rs of 2.60, 1.82, 1.52 and 2.52, respectively, which were slightly separated (Rs = 0.98 for danshensu and 0.40 for salbutamol) or remained unresolved in the absence of DES (Rs = 0 for naringin and neohesperidin). The system remained stable for at least 60 days, with RSD values below 1.30%. Significance and novelty In this paper, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) by modulating the hydrogen-bonding network and solvation microenvironment were introduced as auxiliary modifiers into the chiral mobile-phase additive (CMPA) mode of HPLC for the first time which could synergistically enhance chiral recognition. This strategy offers a green, versatile, and cost-effective solution for advancing chiral separation on conventional C18 columns in HPLC.

Immobilization of Pb and Cd in red soil using Fe–Mn modified sugarcane bagasse biochar: mechanisms and plant uptake

Ma Chuang,Liu XueMei

Lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) in soil threaten agroecosystem safety and human health. Due to the high bioavailability and mobility of heavy metals in red soil, the risk is further increased. Biochar is widely used for heavy metal immobilization, but original biochar suffers from inherent limitations. Most existing studies of iron (Fe)–manganese (Mn) modified biochar have not focused on red soil, and the relationship with soil–plant responses remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the efficacy of sugarcane bagasse biochar (BC) and Fe–Mn modified sugarcane bagasse biochar (FMBC) for Pb and Cd immobilization in red soil, and clarify their effect on plant uptake. BC and FMBC were applied to Pb and Cd contaminated red soil for pot experiments with pak choi ( Brassica rapa chinensis ) as an indicator plant. The results showed that both BC and FMBC elevated soil pH, organic matter (SOM), enzyme activities, reduced Pb and Cd bioavailability, and transformed Pb and Cd to stable fractions. FMBC outperformed BC, and the 5% FMBC treatment achieved the optimal remediation efficacy. The 5% FMBC decreased the acid-extractable Pb and Cd by 9.33 and 34.40% compared to control. The plant biomass was significantly increased, Pb and Cd content in edible shoots met the limit standards, and bioconcentration (BCF) and translocation factors (TF) were lowered. Overall, this study establishes theoretical foundations and empirical bases for the application of FMBC to immobilize Pb and Cd in red soils, thereby providing a feasible and eco-friendly approach to support sustainable agriculture and the recycling of agricultural waste.

Crosslinked-AuNPs@CD-MOF Incorporated into PLA-Zein Composite Film with Humidity-Responsive Antimicrobial Release for Agaricus bisporus Preservation

Tahirou Sogore,Meimei Guo,Jin Huang,Xinyu Liao,Tian Ding,Mofei Shen

Foodborne pathogens cause hundreds of millions of illnesses annually, underscoring the urgent need for advanced antimicrobial food packaging materials. The objective of this study was to develop a crosslinked cyclodextrin metal–organic framework, loaded with gold nanoparticles (CL-AuNPs@CD-MOF) and integrated into a PLA-Zein composite film with humidity-responsive antimicrobial release, as a sustainable and high-performance packaging solution to address the critical limitations of conventional materials in controlling microbial contamination during food storage. Therefore, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were synthesized via a green approach using CD-MOFs as stabilizers and p-coumaric acid as a natural reducing agent, then crosslinked with diphenyl carbonate (DPC) to produce CL-AuNPs@CD-MOF. Crosslinking conditions were optimized to a CD-MOF:DPC ratio of 1:1, 1080 min reaction time, and 80 °C, preserving the cubic morphology and crystalline structure while transforming burst release into sustained antimicrobial activity againstE. coliandS. aureusover 7 days. Then, the incorporation of CL-AuNPs@CD-MOF into PLA-Zein films yielded a composite packaging material with favorable mechanical and barrier properties, including a water vapor transmission rate of 539.44 g/m2·24 h and an oxygen permeability of 235.90 cm3/m2·24 h·0.1 MPa. Progressive elimination ofE. coli,S. aureus, andL. monocytogenesover 7 days was confirmed, with antimicrobial efficacy originating exclusively from the CL-AuNPs@CD-MOF component. Application onAgaricus bisporusover 12 days of refrigerated storage demonstrated superior preservation performance: mushrooms inoculated withL. monocytogenesand packaged with CL-AuNPs@CD-MOF/PLA-Zein exhibited a weight loss of only 6.20 ± 2.06%, compared to 17.74 ± 3.15% for PLA-Zein and 41.50 ± 3.01% for PE controls. Color stability was equally improved, with lightness values of 71.46 ± 1.47 retained under CL-AuNPs@CD-MOF/PLA-Zein packaging, versus 58.37 ± 0.86 for PLA-Zein and 23.34 ± 2.34 for PE. Mushrooms inoculated withE. coliandS. aureusfollowed consistent trends. These results establish CL-AuNPs@CD-MOF/PLA-Zein as a promising multifunctional antimicrobial packaging platform for sustainable food preservation.

β-CD-Ag nanoparticles combined with ordered Au nanoshells array as a dual-substrate SERS platform for antibiotic detection

Yanying Rao,Binggui Wang,Hong Li,Xiaoying Ding,Kaiguo Liu,Xiaojuan Wang,Yue Li

Integrating β-CD-AgNPs and AuNSs arrays enables rapid, quantitative SERS sensing of antibiotic residues. • The system detects AMP, CIP, ENR, NFX individually and in mixtures with high sensitivity. • The combined substrate enabled accurate, applicable antibiotic detection in real waters. β-Cyclodextrin-functionalized Ag nanoparticles (β-CD-AgNPs) were synthesized via a one-step method and integrated with ordered Au nanoshells (AuNSs) arrays to construct a highly sensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensor for antibiotic detection. The specific dimensions of the β-CD-AgNPs enable selective binding, drawing antibiotic molecules into close proximity with the AgNPs surface. This proximity generates plasmonic hot spots, significantly amplifying the Raman signals. In this design, the β-CD-AgNPs serve a dual role as both the primary SERS substrate and an internal standard. A strong linear relationship was established between the concentration of antibiotics and the intensity ratio of the characteristic antibiotic peak to the β-CD-AgNPs peak. Based on this principle, we achieved sensitive detection of both individual antibiotics and their mixtures, and validated the method through spike-and-recovery experiments in environmental water samples. The calibration plots were established by linearly fitting the intensity ratio (antibiotic characteristic peak/internal standard peak) against the concentration of Ampicillin (AMP), Ciprofloxacin (CIP), Enrofloxacin (ENR), and Norfloxacin (NFX) solutions, all exhibiting excellent linearity (R 2  > 0.99), as well as for binary mixtures of CIP and AMP, with R 2 values of 0.9942 and 0.9953, respectively. The limits of detection (LODs) for these antibiotics ranged from 0.0827 to 0.3365 μmol·L −1 , and the limits of quantification (LOQs) ranged from 0.27 to 1.11 μmol·L −1 . The linear working ranges were 0.61–5.00, 0.55–12.00, 0.48–12.00, and 1.11–12.00 μmol·L −1 for AMP, CIP, ENR, and NFX, respectively. In environmental water samples, apparent recovery rates of individual antibiotics ranged from 98.84% (±0.03%) to 100.02% (±0.01%), with relative standard deviations (RSDs) between 1.32% and 4.92%. For CIP and AMP mixtures in similar samples, recoveries ranged from 98.53% (±0.01%) to 111.29% (±0.04%), with RSDs between 1.15% and 5.71%. These results demonstrate that the proposed SERS sensor enables efficient and accurate antibiotic detection, offering a viable approach for the rapid and highly sensitive monitoring of antibiotic contaminants in the environment. High-sensitivity determination of Pb(II) and Cd(II) on a glassy carbon electrode modified with polypyrrole/sepiolite nanofibers

Pan Yan,Dong Yong-Ping,Chu Xiang-Feng,Ding Hou-Cheng

Polypyrrole-sepiolite ( PPy/SPL ) nanofibers were prepared by in situ chemical oxidation polymerization in the presence of sepiolite. A PPy/SPL composite modified glassy carbon electrode ( PPy/SPL/GCE ) was prepared and characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and electrochemical methods. Differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry for the simultaneous determination of trace Pb(II) and Cd(II) was carried out at the PPy/SPL/GCE. Operational parameters such as the deposition potential and time, the amount of modified suspension, and the pH values were optimized for the purpose of determination of trace metal ions in 0.10 M acetate buffer solution. Under the optimal conditions, the stripping peak currents showed good linear relationships with Pb(II) and Cd(II) at concentration ranges of 5.0 × 10 –9 ‒1.2 × 10 –6 M and 5.0 × 10 –9 ‒1.2 × 10 –7 M, and the detection limits were 1.2 and 1.5 nM, respectively. The proposed method is applicable to the simultaneous determination of trace Pb(II) and Cd(II) in real water samples with the relative standard deviations of less than 4.4% and the recovery rates of 97.9‒102.2%.

Bioaccessibility of Cd and its Correlation with Divalent Mineral Nutrients in Locally Grown Rice from Two Provinces in China

Liu Peng,Xiao Weiwei,Wang Kai,Yang Zhaoguang,Wang Lin

Rice and rice products are the main sources of Cd contamination in humans. The total and bioaccessible concentrations of Cd and three divalent nutrients, Mn, Cu, and Zn, in locally grown rice grains from Hunan and Guangdong Provinces in China were investigated. An in vitro physiologically based extraction test method was introduced to evaluate the bioaccessibility of the target metals in the rice grains. The mean concentrations of Cd in the rice grains were 0.245 mg/kg and 0.235 mg/kg from Hunan and Guangdong Provinces, respectively. Large variations were observed in the Cd concentrations, indicating a heterogeneous distribution of Cd contamination throughout the study areas. The bioaccessibility of Cd, Mn, and Zn in the gastrointestinal fractions was significantly lower than that in the gastric fractions. In contrast, the bioaccessibility of Cu at the intestinal phase was detected in the rice grains from both provinces. The correlation analysis showed significant relationships between total Cd concentrations and bioaccessible Cd fractions, indicating that higher total Cd in rice grains always resulted in higher bioaccessible Cd. Consistent correlations in the rice grains were observed between Zn and Mn. However, a lack of correlation was found between Cd and Zn in the current study. Risk assessment according to bioaccessible Cd would significantly reduce the exposure risk to Cd from rice consumption.
