Constructing heterogeneous structures to precisely regulate the interface characteristics and loss mechanisms of materials is the key to performance improvement. This study proposes a strategy of constructing the NiS 2 -CdS P-N heterojunction with Porous carbon nanofibers (PCNFs) as the supporting skeleton, and deeply investigates the influence of the interface regulation mechanism of the P-N heterojunction on the absorption performance. The study clarified the structural reconstruction information such as bond parameter distortion, atomic occupation deviation, and lattice disorder caused by the Built-in electric field (BIEF) of the P-N heterojunction through X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) refinement. With the help of Density functional theory (DFT) calculation, the performance regulation mechanism of the heterojunction was revealed at the atomic/electronic scale. A carrier migration model between NiS 2 and CdS was constructed, and the absorption mechanism was analyzed. By utilizing the BIEF and space charge region formed by NiS 2 and CdS, the equivalent impedance is regulated. Ultimately, the cooperative optimization of material impedance matching and energy dissipation is achieved, providing new ideas and development of high-performance electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbing materials. This research provides theoretical support for the subsequent shift of absorbing materials from empirical synthesis to precise design.

Iron regulates redox processes and maintains cellular functions. In this study, a CDs@AuNCs-based ratiometric fluorescence probe was established for selective visual recognition and quantitative analysis of Fe 2+ . The probe combines blue-emitting carbon dots (CDs) and red-emitting gold nanoclusters (AuNCs), generating dual fluorescence emissions with distinct peaks at 435 nm and 610 nm. The I 610 /I 435 ratio was optimized for Fe 2+ detection, achieving excellent sensitivity with a detection limit as low as 3.5 nM. The proposed probe demonstrated superior photostability, high environmental tolerance, and remarkable selectivity towards Fe 2+ over other metal ions and small molecules. Real sample analysis, including ferrous succinate tablets, environmental water, and juice, showed satisfactory recoveries and low RSDs, confirming the reliability and accuracy of the method. CDs@AuNCs ratiometric probe is a promising tool for practical applications in clinical diagnostics, pharmaceutical quality control, and environmental monitoring, offering advantages such as simplicity, rapid response, and cost-effectiveness for Fe 2+ ion detection in complex real samples. A facile catalytic growth route was developed for the low-temperature solution synthesis of Ag2S–CdS matchstick-like heteronanostructures in oleylamine, which are composed of a Ag2S spherical head and a CdS rod-like stem. Ag2S nanoseeds acted as an effective catalyst for the growth of CdS nanorods and remained at the tip of the resultant nanorods, leading to the formation of Ag2S–CdS heterostructures with a matchstick shape. The diameter of the Ag2S heads and the length of the CdS stems could be easily controlled by varying the molar ratios of the Ag/Cd precursors. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and variable-temperature X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies confirmed that Ag2S catalytic seeds underwent a phase change, that is, they were in a high-temperature superionic conducting cubic structure during the CdS nanorod growth and then converted to a low-temperature monoclinic crystal structure as the reaction was cooled to room temperature. The influence of synthetic temperature on the product morphology was investigated and the morphological evolution at different growth stages was monitored using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Furthermore, the growth kinetics of the Ag2S–CdS matchstick-like heteronanostructures, including the dissolution, nucleation and growth of CdS within the Ag2S catalyst, was reasonably discussed on the basis of the structural characteristics of the superionic cubic Ag2S catalyst and the low solubility of CdS in Ag2S derived from the Ag2S–CdS binary phase diagram.

Large-scale hydrogen production through water splitting using photocatalysts with solar energy can potentially produce clean fuel from renewable resources. In this work, photocatalytic hydrogen evolution with a high efficiency was achieved using CdS nanocrystal decorated CdLa2S4 microspheres (CdS/CdLa2S4) successfully prepared by a two-step hydrothermal process. The obtained CdS/CdLa2S4 composite was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron microscopy (EM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV-vis diffuse reflectance absorption spectroscopy (DRS), and photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL). XRD demonstrated that highly crystalline hexagonal CdS was obtained in CdS/CdLa2S4. EM results revealed that CdLa2S4 microspheres assembled from a large number of nanoprisms, were intimately enwrapped by the surrounding CdS nanocrystals with a particle size below 20 nm. This unique architecture resulted in the appropriate dispersion of CdS nanocrystals and intimate multipoint contacts between the CdS nanocrystals and CdLa2S4, which led to significant enhancement of charge separation in CdS/CdLa2S4. Especially, the CdLa2S4 microspheres decorated with 3 wt% CdS nanocrystals containing 0.4 wt% of Pt showed a high rate of H2-production at 2.25 mmol h−1 with an apparent quantum efficiency of 54% under 420 nm monochromatic light. The rate of hydrogen evolution from water splitting was 9 times faster in comparison with the rate observed on pure CdLa2S4, which is ascribed to the presence of CdS nanocrystals that alter the energy levels of the conduction and valence bands in the coupled semiconductor system.

Two-dimensional (2D) vertical heterojunctions possess peculiar electronic and optoelectronic properties according to their complementary composition, ultrathin thickness, and unique geometry. However, it is still a challenge to synthesize 2D vertical heterojunctions based on non-layered materials due to strong covalent bonds and abundant surface dangling bonds. Here we developed a partial cation exchange method for the synthesis of 2D vertical Cu2S/CdS heterojunctions. Large-size and single-crystalline CdS nanosheets prepared by a van der Waals epitaxy method served as host lattices for cation exchange reactions. The evolution of the nanosheets in terms of their morphology, composition and crystal structure was elaborately characterized. The as-prepared 2D vertical heterojunctions have two-layer ultra-thin structures and form large-area junctions at their interfaces. Under light irradiation, the photogenerated electron–hole pairs can be quickly separated under the electric field in the junction region, minimizing the possibility of charge recombination. As a result, the device based on 2D vertical Cu2S/CdS heterojunctions exhibits a higher photoelectric conversion capability compared with the device based on single-component 2D CdS or Cu2S Schottky junctions. Our work opens up opportunities to explore 2D vertical heterojunctions based on non-layered materials for high-performance optoelectronic devices.

The introduction of various amounts of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) to CdS/CdSe quantum dots co-sensitized solar cells was investigated to enhance the light absorption and to promote the electron transfer. The characterization and comparison of optical and electrochemical properties as well as the performance of the resultant quantum dot-sensitized solar cells (QDSCs) with different amounts of RGO have been investigated systematically. The introduction of RGO demonstrated to enhance the light harvesting and consequently increase the short-circuit current density (Jsc). ZnS inserting between QDs and RGO can effectively block the charge recombination at the interface; however, the defects of RGO in the TiO2/QDs/ZnS/RGO photoanode still may accelerate the interface charge recombination in QDSCs and lead to a slight decrease of the open-circuit voltage (Voc). The balance between the light harvesting and charge recombination in RGO modified QDSCs is a key for achieving high power conversion efficiency (PCE). Finally, the CdS/CdSe/ZnS co-sensitized cell with modification RGO (3 min) achieved a high PCE of 5.28% (Jsc = 15.8 mA/cm2, Voc = 572 mV), more than 13% higher than that of 4.69% (Jsc = 13.7 mA/cm2, Voc = 602 mV) obtained for the cell without RGO.

Control of structural and compositional characteristics of photoanodes is a crucial step toward rapid transport of charges and high-efficiency loading of dye or quantum dots in the case of solar cell application. Hierarchical ZnO microspheres (ZMS) and TiO2 hybrid photoanode film were prepared for improved CdS/CdSe quantum dot sensitized solar cells (QDSCs). The addition of ZMS into TiO2 electrode films resulted in both increased short circuit current density (Jsc) and open circuit voltage (Voc). Such an improvement is ascribed to the increased light harvesting owing to scattering by ZMS and the reduced charge recombination due to the surface modification. TiO2/ZMS hybrid photoanode displays superior charge injection/transport performance due to the ZMS with unique hierarchical structure, providing charge transfer continuity and multiple electron transport channels for timely electron transport. As a result, the Jsc, Voc, and the photovoltaic conversion efficiency (PCE) were all remarkably enhanced with the insertion of hierarchical ZMS though varied appreciably with the amount of ZMS. Thus, the designed TiO2/ZMS heterostructure-based QDSCs with an optimizing ZMS ratio of 20 wt % achieved a PCE of 5.99%, which is about 35% increase of the efficiency for the devices without ZMS (4.45%).

We demonstrate a strategy for the growth of Mn2+ ion doped cadmium based II–VI semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) with a designed buffer layer of ZnS (MnS/ZnS/CdS or Mn:CdS QDs), which aims to meet the challenge of obtaining highly efficient and well-resolved Mn2+ ion emission. First, small, high quality MnS cores are obtained by using thiols to replace conventional alkyl amines as capping ligands. Then a buffer layer of ZnS with a tailored thickness is introduced to the QDs before the growth of CdS shells to reduce the size mismatch between the Mn2+ (dopant) and Cd2+ (host) ions. The fabricated MnS/ZnS/CdS core/shell QDs exhibit a high PL QY of up to 68%, which is the highest ever reported for any type of Mn2+ ion doped cadmium based II–VI semiconductor QD. The photoluminescence (PL) of the QDs consists of well-resolved Mn2+ ion emission without any detectable emission from the CdS band edge or surface defects. In addition, our MnS/ZnS/CdS QDs cannot only be made water-soluble, but can also be coated by ligands with short carbon chain lengths, nearly without cost to the PL QY, which could make them strong candidates for practical applications in biology/biomedicine and opto/electronic devices.

Photocatalytic CO 2 reduction into value-added chemicals such as CO is of great importance for carbon-neutral in the future. However, both high CO 2 activation barriers and sluggish charge kinetics make it still a challenge for CO 2 photoreduction with high reactivity. Herein, a type-II heterojunction (CZ/C), which consists of CdS (C) nanospheres anchored on the defective Ce-doped ZnIn 2 S 4 (CZ) microflowers, was synthesized by an in-situ solvothermal route, realizing exceptional CO 2 catalytic performance under simulated sunlight irradiation. According to the detailed characterizations and density functional theory calculations, the energy barrier of the rate determining step is significantly reduced due to the outstanding CO 2 adsorption and activation on rare earth Ce atoms. Simultaneously, the separation and transfer efficiency of photogenerated carriers are greatly facilitated by type-II heterojunction constructed by anchoring CdS on CZ and S vacancies resulting from a heteroatom doping strategy. Thus, the optimum photocatalyst of CZ2/C2 composite provides an advantageous platform for CO 2 photoreduction to CO, which is roughly 7.5- and 3.0-fold higher than those of the pristine ZIS and CZ2, respectively. This work offers a promising avenue for designing effective catalysts with a dual-strategy method for photocatalysis.

As the growing presence of antibiotic residues in environmental water bodies poses an increasing risk to ecological safety and human health, developing simple and efficient methods for the targeted detection of antibiotics is of particular importance. In this study, we propose a simple method for the one-step hydrothermal synthesis of N, S-co-doped carbon dots (N, S-CDs) using disulfide bonds from discarded badminton shuttlecocks. We investigated the effects of different synthesis temperatures on its performance and confirmed the method’s excellent performance in detecting tetracycline (TC) concentrations, with results demonstrating that varying synthesis temperatures affect the degree and distribution of carbonization, thereby influencing fluorescence intensity. Consequently, employing N, S-CDs-180, which exhibits optimal photoluminescence properties, as the sensing probe for the detection of TC solutions at varying concentrations yielded an excellent linear equation for fluorescence quenching and the detection limit is 1.963 mg/L. Additionally, the fluorescence stability of N,S-CDs-180 was investigated in laboratory water, tap water, seawater, lake water, and industrial wastewater, all of which demonstrated exceptional environmental adaptability. Furthermore, a systematic investigation into the target selectivity of N, S-CDs-180 toward various antibiotics revealed that this material exhibits a sensitive quenching response specifically to tetracycline-class antibiotics while showing no quenching effect on non-tetracycline antibiotics, collectively indicating that the as-prepared N, S-CDs can serve as potential fluorescent probes for the highly selective detection of tetracycline-class antibiotics in complex aqueous systems.

Carbon dots (CDs) have emerged as a promising class of nanomaterials owing to their remarkable fluorescence, excellent water solubility, and low cytotoxicity. In this study, phosphorus doped CDs were synthesized via a simple, green, one-step hydrothermal method using Solanum lyratum , a traditional Chinese medicinal herb, as a carbon source and phosphoric acid as a dopant. The resulting CDs exhibited uniform spherical morphology with an average particle size of 3.46 nm, as revealed by TEM. FTIR and XPS analyses confirmed the presence of multiple surface functional groups including C–N, C=O, N=N, and P–O, indicating successful heteroatom doping. The CDs showed excitation-dependent photoluminescence and good aqueous dispersibility. Antibacterial evaluation demonstrated that the CDs effectively inhibited the growth of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus , with minimum inhibitory concentrations of 0.0115 mg/mL and 0.010 mg/mL, respectively. These results highlight the potential of Solanum lyratum -derived CDs as a novel, eco-friendly antimicrobial nanomaterial from medicinal plants.

S-scheme heterojunction nanozyme (C 3 N 4 @CDs-ZIF) in hydrogel for photo-/piezo synergy. • Tunable multienzyme-like activities (POD/OXD/CAT/SOD) to UV/Vis/NIR and ultrasound. • Built-in E-field suppresses recombination, enabling 92.5% RhB and 96.47% S. aureus kill. • Microenvironment regulation for infected diabetic wound healing achieves 85% closure by day 12. Inspired by the multienzyme-like cascade of natural antioxidative systems, we report a sustainable photoluminescent hydrogel platform (PAM:C 3 N 4 @CDs-ZIF) engineered with synergistic photo-/piezoelectric enhancement. By constructing an S-scheme heterojunction between carbon nitride (C 3 N 4 ) nanosheets and carbon dot-functionalized ZIF-8 (CDs-ZIF) within a polyacrylamide matrix, the hydrogel integrates multiple enzyme-mimicking activities, including peroxidase (POD), oxidase (OXD), catalase (CAT), and superoxide dismutase (SOD). The catalytic activities are tunable and stimulus-enhanced under multi-wavelength photoexcitation (UV/Vis/NIR) and ultrasound-induced piezoelectric stimulation. Band-structure analysis, ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS), electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy, and transient photocurrent response collectively support an S-scheme charge-transfer pathway, in which interfacial electric-field-assisted charge separation promotes reactive oxygen species generation and conversion. As a result, the hydrogel achieves 92.5% Rhodamine B degradation within 5 min under combined UV/ultrasound stimulation and exhibits 96.47% antibacterial efficiency against Staphylococcus aureus . In addition, an infected diabetic wound model demonstrates accelerated wound closure, suggesting the potential of this adaptive catalytic hydrogel for antibacterial tissue repair. This work provides a rational strategy for designing smart, energy-stimulated hydrogel nanozymes for environmental remediation and biomedical applications.
