Ca salts in fly ash have a deactivation effect on SCR catalyst. In this study, the deactivation mechanism of Ca on Ce/TiO 2 catalyst was investigated in term of the in situ DRIFT study. The experimental results indicate that the poisoning effect increases with reaction temperature. From the results of in situ DRIFT study, it may be concluded that the NH 3 -SCR reaction over Ce/TiO 2 catalyst takes place though two pathways: the L -H mechanisms (<200 °C) and the E-R mechanism (>200 °C). For Ce/TiO 2 -Ca, the NH 3 -SCR reaction over it is mainly controlled by L -H mechanism. The deactivation of Ce/TiO 2 -Ca lies in the following two aspects: (1) the inhibited NH 3 adsorption and NO oxidation (<200 °C); (2) the greatly suppressed NH 3 adsorption and activation (>200 °C).

Aliovalent substitution is an effective route to design new nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals. Using SrCdSiS 4 as a parent compound, two new infrared NLO lanthanide thiosilicates, namely LnLiSiS 4 (Ln = La and Ce), have been successfully obtained through aliovalent substitution. Interestingly, these compounds exhibit [LiSiS 4 ] 3- layers composed of vertex- and edge-shared LiS 4 and SiS 4 tetrahedra that significantly different from the [LnSiS 4 ] 3- layers composed of edge-shared LnS 6 trigonal prisms (or LnS 7 monocapped trigonal prisms) and SiS 4 tetrahedra in other ALnSiS 4 (A = K, Rb, Cs, Ln = lanthanide) compounds with larger sized alkali cations. LnLiSiS 4 (Ln = La and Ce) also achieve balanced properties for good infrared NLO materials: largest SHG response among all known thiosilicates (2.0 and 2.1 × AgGaS 2 @ 2 μm for LaLiSiS 4 and CeLiSiS 4 respectively) with phase matching ability, high laser induced damage threshold (14 and 9 times of AgGaS 2 ), wide bandgap (3.71 and 2.92 eV), wide infrared transmission range (0.35–18 μm) and good thermal stability above 700 °C. This work not only enriches the structure chemistry of lanthanide thiosilicates, but also provides an efficient route to design new high performance IR NLO materials.

Sepsis is a life-threatening inflammatory syndrome caused by bacterial infections, with limited therapeutic options in critical care. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from Gram-negative bacteria triggers sepsis by activating toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) through myeloid differentiation protein-2 (MD-2) binding. The phosphate groups in LPS serve as key recognition elements for this interaction. This study developed a zirconium/cerium (Zr/Ce) dual-metal nanozyme with phosphatase activity that catalyzes LPS dephosphorylation, disrupting LPS–TLR4 binding to inhibit NF-κB signaling and reduce inflammation. The nanozyme incorporated l-arginine and tannic acid (TA) to enhance the LPS binding capacity, while TA modification improved the antioxidant capability, constructing a multifunctional TA-Zr/Ce nanozyme. Results show that the nanozyme effectively catalyzes LPS dephosphorylation and suppresses inflammatory cytokine release from macrophages. In septic mice, TA-Zr/Ce treatment improved organ function, reduced systemic inflammation, and increased survival rates while promoting anti-inflammatory M2 macrophage polarization. Furthermore, this study constructed a regenerated cellulose microsphere (RCM)-based hemoperfusion system for loading nanozymes and efficiently removing LPS from blood, demonstrating strong clinical translation potential. Therefore, this research provides additional approaches and tools for the clinical management of sepsis.

Generally, binary metal oxides often exhibit superior catalytic performance to their single-metal counterparts, with crystal-phase structure being a critical factor alongside the metallic composition. However, systematic studies elucidating the role of crystal phase remain scarce. Herein, we synthesize a series of Mn–Ce oxide catalysts (MnCeOx) with distinct crystal phases─bixbyite (Mn2O3-type) and fluorite (CeO2-type)─by a sol-gel method and evaluate their performance in the catalytic oxidation of benzene, toluene, and their mixture. MnCeOx outperformed individual Mn2O3 and CeO2 in both single- and mixed-pollutant scenarios. Noticeably, the fluorite-phase catalysts displayed markedly higher activity than their bixbyite-phase analogues. In single-pollutant oxidation, benzene is oxidized at a lower temperature (T90) than that of toluene. Conversely, in co-oxidation mixtures, toluene exhibits a lower T90 than benzene, indicating a reversal of reactivity under competitive conditions. Comprehensive characterization and theoretical calculations reveal that the high activity of the fluorite phase originates from its lower-valent Mn centers and oxygen vacancies. In mixed benzene/toluene streams, toluene significantly inhibited benzene oxidation because of competitive adsorption. This work highlights the decisive role of crystal-phase engineering in designing efficient multicomponent oxide catalysts for VOC removal.

Ce(Ⅳ) markedly enhanced the electrochemical removal rate of M. aeruginosa . • Simultaneous removal of algae (92.5%) and MC-LR (94.1%) was achieved in 60 min. • Kinetic analysis indicates a strong synergistic effect in E-Ce (IV) system. • Multi-target cellular damage drives population-level algal inactivation. The frequent occurrence of cyanobacterial blooms poses severe challenges to aquatic environmental safety and conventional water treatment processes. While electrochemical oxidation is operationally simple, its efficiency in algal cells removal is often limited by low current efficiency and prevalent side reactions in conventional systems. This study developed a Ce(IV)-assisted electrochemical system, E-Ce(IV), incorporating Cerium(IV) (Ce(IV)) to boost the removal of Microcystis aeruginosa ( M. aeruginosa ). A synergistic effect between Ce(IV) chemical oxidation and direct electro-oxidation was identified, significantly improving algal removal performance. Under optimal conditions, the E-Ce(IV) system achieved a high removal rate of 92.5% within 60 min, markedly superior to the Ce(IV) alone system (4.68%) and direct electro-treatment (DET) system (57%). Mechanistic investigations revealed that the E-Ce(IV) system synergistically disrupted cellular membrane integrity, as well as their photosynthetic and antioxidant capacities. Concurrently, the system degraded algal organic matter, achieving a 94.1% degradation rate of the cyanotoxin microcystin-LR (MC-LR). Further assessment of different typical water matrices and bodies demonstrated the feasibility of the system for algal control under acidic conditions. As a proof-of-concept batch treatment process under acidic, sulfate-supported conditions, this work extended the E-Ce(IV) process from degrading organic pollutants to removing algal cells, offering preliminary insights into its multi-target synergistic inactivation mechanism. The simultaneous efficient degradation of cyanotoxins suggests that this approach may offer a potential strategy for algal bloom control when applied with mild pre-acidification and sulfate electrolyte supplementation. The geometric interplay in heterogeneous catalysis plays a crucial role in determining the catalytic performance. Based on the stronger affinity of Pd for ceria (CeO 2 ) than for titanium oxide (TiO 2 ) found in this work, we strategically engineered distinct Pd local environments by controlling the architecture of CeO x on TiO 2 through adjusting Ce content. At low Ce content, Pd preferentially assembles onto CeO x islands that are interspersed on TiO 2 ; while at high Ce content, Pd predominantly anchors onto the extensive CeO x surface. The former structure, enriched with CeO x -TiO 2 interface, exhibits superior capability in C-H bond cleavage and O 2 activation, leading to outstanding performance in the oxidation of carbon-containing gases such as light volatile organic compounds (VOCs; e.g., ethane and ethylene) and carbon monoxide (CO). In contrast, the structure dominated by continuous CeO 2 networks shows markedly lower activity. Combined analyses indicate that Pd 2+ species act as the primary active sites, and the consistent activity trend across differently Ce-modified catalysts in VOCs and CO oxidation can be explained by shared mechanistic steps, particularly through common CO and bicarbonate species intermediates. This work provides fundamental insight into the relationship between interfacial geometry and catalytic function.

To address the demand for high-precision piezoelectric devices featuring high piezoelectric performance and excellent temperature stability, x Ce-PMN-35PT piezoelectric ceramics were synthesized via cerium doping. Ce ions preferentially occupy the A-site substituting for Pb 2 + , as evidenced by XRD peak shifts and Raman spectral evolution. Combined lattice variation and ionic radius data suggest a valence evolution from Ce 4+ towards Ce 3+ with increasing doping content. The results show that the ceramic with 2 mol% Ce doping exhibits superior comprehensive performance: the piezoelectric coefficient d 33 reaches 780 pC/N, the large-signal piezoelectric coefficient d 33 * is 1101 pm/V, and the unipolar electrostrain only degrades by 6.4% across the broad temperature range from 25 to 125 ℃. Through in situ XRD and Rietveld refinement, this study further elucidated the intrinsic correlation among phase structure, domain switching dynamics, and piezoelectric properties, thereby revealing the underlying mechanism by which cerium doping optimizes material performance. This work not only offers a promising material system for medium-temperature high-precision piezoelectric actuators but also presents an effective strategy for tailoring the properties of PMN-PT-based ceramics.

Dual-template hydrothermal synthesis of high-area WO 3 nanosheets. • Ce doping tunes WO 3 with optimal NO 2 sensing at 3% doping level. • Fivefold higher response (189.6 toward 10 ppm NO 2 at 150 °C) vs WO 3 . • Detection limit of 25 ppb with fast response/recovery (28/37 s). Nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) is a hazardous air pollutant, necessitating the development of highly sensitive sensors operating at low temperatures. Herein, Ce-doped WO 3 nanosheets with enhanced surface reactivity were fabricated via a dual-template hydrothermal strategy using PVP and P123. The dual-template approach enables the formation of uniform nanosheets with enlarged specific surface area and abundant accessible active sites, thereby boosting surface adsorption and reaction kinetics. Ce doping further tailors the surface and electronic structures by introducing abundant oxygen vacancies and defect levels that reduce the apparent optical bandgap from 2.45 to 2.37 eV, which enhances charge transfer and adsorption capability. As a result, the 3% Ce-WO 3 sensor exhibits optimal performance at 150°C, delivering a high response of 189.6 toward 10 ppm NO 2 , nearly five times higher than that of pristine WO 3 , along with a low detection limit of 25 ppb, excellent selectivity, and long-term stability. Mechanistic analysis reveals that the synergistic effects of dual-template-derived surface reactivity and Ce-induced electronic modulation reduce the activation energy from 0.57 to 0.31 eV, thereby facilitating NO 2 adsorption and surface redox reactions at low temperatures. This work provides an effective strategy for the rational design of high-performance gas sensors for low-temperature NO 2 detection. Download: Download high-res image (91KB) Download: Download full-size image In summary, we have successfully synthesized Ce-doped WO 3 nanosheets via a dual-template hydrothermal method and systematically investigated their NO 2 sensing performance. Among the investigated samples, the sensor with 3% Ce doping exhibited the optimal NO 2 sensing performance, delivering a high response of 189.6 toward 10 ppm NO 2 at 150°C, which is approximately five times higher than that of pristine WO 3 under identical conditions. In addition, a low detection limit of 25 ppb was achieved, along with rapid response and recovery times of 28 s and 37 s, respectively. Mechanistic investigations reveals that Ce doping introduces abundant surface oxygen vacancies, narrows the apparent optical bandgap from 2.45 to 2.37 eV, and shifts the Fermi level upward, as confirmed by XPS, UV-Vis, and Mott-Schottky measurements. These electronic structure modifications significantly reduce the activation energy and promote surface redox kinetics, thereby enabling highly efficient NO 2 detection at relatively low operating temperatures. This work demonstrates that rare-earth doping, combined with rational morphology engineering, is an effective strategy for regulating the electronic structure and surface properties of WO 3 , providing a promising approach for the development of high-performance gas sensors for next-generation environmental monitoring applications.

Magnetic Zr/Ce bimetallic CPs were prepared by a hydrothermal method. • Partial Ce substitution for Zr reduces cost of the bimetallic nodes. • Phthalic acid ligand offers electron-rich aromatic rings for π-π stacking. • DBP uptake reaches 1061–1172 mg/g at 600 mg/L, surpassing most adsorbents. • Magnetic separation enables reuse; capacity drops <5% after five cycles. Phthalate esters (PAEs), as endocrine-disrupting chemicals with reproductive toxicity, pose significant challenges to environmental protection and food safety due to their widespread occurrence and persistence in the environment. In this study, three Zr/Ce bimetallic coordination polymers (CPs) were successfully synthesized via a hydrothermal method combined with a post-modification coprecipitation strategy, using tetrafluoroterephthalic acid (BDC-F₄) and phthalic acid (PA) as mixed ligands. Fe₃O₄ was subsequently deposited in situ to impart magnetic responsiveness to the materials. All three materials exhibited excellent adsorption performance toward dibutyl phthalate (DBP), with adsorption capacities of 1061, 1128, and 1172 mg/g, respectively, at an initial DBP concentration of 600 mg/L, which were higher than the theoretical maximum adsorption capacities of most adsorbents reported in the literature. The adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-first-order model, while the adsorption isotherms were better described by the Freundlich and Temkin models. Thermodynamic analysis indicated that the adsorption process was spontaneous and exothermic and was predominantly governed by physical adsorption. After five consecutive adsorption–desorption cycles, the average decrease in adsorption capacity was approximately 2.7%, demonstrating excellent structural stability and reusability. This study integrates Zr/Ce bimetallic nodes with mixed-ligand functional regulation, providing a magnetically separable adsorbent design strategy for the efficient and selective removal of PAEs from complex aqueous matrices. A sulfide–sulfide ZnIn 2 S 4 /ZnS heterojunction establishes an S-scheme charge-transfer pathway with intimate interfacial coupling. • Ce act as additional regulation centers to modulate interfacial electronic structure and carrier dynamics. • The S-scheme charge-transfer mechanism is supported by XPS, KPFM, DFT calculations, and ultrafast spectroscopy. • Ce-mediated electronic regulation synergistically enhances CO 2 adsorption, activation, and surface reduction kinetics. • The optimized C2ZZ2 catalyst achieves 140.6 μmol g −1 h −1 CO production through coordinated interface and electronic regulation. Solar-powered photocatalytic CO 2 reduction represents a promising strategy for achieving carbon neutrality through sustainable solar-to-chemical energy conversion. Nevertheless, inefficient charge separation and sluggish interfacial reaction kinetics markedly limit its performance. Herein, Ce-regulated ZnIn 2 S 4 /ZnS S-scheme heterojunctions were synthesized via a facile one-step in situ hydrothermal strategy to regulate interfacial charge transfer and surface reaction processes. The ZnIn 2 S 4 /ZnS interface establishes an S-scheme charge-migration pathway, facilitating directional migration and utilization of photogenerated carriers, while Ce incorporation induces electronic redistribution and modulates the local electronic environment. Experimental investigations combined with theoretical calculations reveal that Ce-mediated electronic modulation cooperates with the S-scheme heterointerface to strengthen CO 2 adsorption, accelerate interfacial charge transfer, and reduce the energy barrier of CO 2 reduction. Benefiting from this synergistic electronic regulation, the optimized C2ZZ2 catalyst achieves a CO evolution rate of 140.6 μmol g −1 h −1 , approximately 4.5-fold higher than pristine ZnIn 2 S 4 . This work provides mechanistic insights into rare-earth-mediated electronic regulation in metal sulfide photocatalysts, offering a deeper understanding of the relationship among electronic modulation, interfacial charge-transfer dynamics, and CO 2 reduction kinetics. An S-scheme heterojunction, in which ZnS nanospheres are anchored to a defect-containing cerium-doped ZnIn 2 S 4 micro-flowers structure (CxZZy composite), was synthesized via a one-step in situ solvothermal method. This material exhibits outstanding CO 2 catalytic performance under visible light irradiation. Download: Download high-res image (118KB) Download: Download full-size image

Atomic Ce-Fe dyad in Ni 3 S 2 enables kinetic-stability synergy for urea electrolysis. • Low cell voltage of 1.37 V at 100 mA·cm −2 with over 510 h durability. • Operando Raman, XAFS and DFT reveal optimized Ni-S bond and d -band center. Replacing the energy-intensive oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with the urea oxidation reaction (UOR) presents a promising route for energy-saving hydrogen production coupled with wastewater remediation. However, developing electrocatalysts that simultaneously achieve high activity and long-term stability remains a formidable challenge. Herein, we propose and validate a novel “kinetic-structural synergy” design principle by constructing atomic-scale Ce-Fe binary catalytic unit within Ni 3 S 2 nanoarrays. Unlike random doping, this defined architecture enables a functional division of labor. The Fe site acts as a kinetic promoter to dramatically lower the potential for active NiOOH phase formation, while the adjacent Ce site functions as a structural and electronic stabilizer, securing the high-valent Ni intermediates. The resulting catalyst achieves an ultra-low UOR potential. When configured in a two-electrode urea electrolyzer, it requires only 1.37 V to deliver 100 mA·cm −2 current density and maintains remarkable stability for over 510 h. In situ Raman spectroscopy directly evidences the earliest formation and exceptional persistence of the NiOOH phase on this catalyst. Combined X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations elucidate from the atomic-level principle that the Fe-Ce unit cooperatively tunes the local coordination and electronic structure of Ni, leading to an optimal Ni-S bond length and a favorable d -band center of Ni site, collectively facilitating the reaction pathway. This work demonstrates that targeted lanthanide-transition metal pairing can create integrated catalytic units where activity and stability are inherently coupled, providing a new design strategy for advanced energy conversion systems. Download: Download high-res image (166KB) Download: Download full-size image The successful doping of Ce and Fe asymmetric metals to form the Fe-S-Ni-S-Ce catalytic chain alters the bond length/strength of the original Ni-S bond, promoting the formation of high-valent nickel species while enhancing their stability at high oxidation potentials, ultimately achieving a balance between high activity and long-term operation in the urea oxidation process.

In this study, a novel Ce metal–organic framework (Ce-MOF) material was successfully synthesised via structural defect engineering using 5-hydroxyisophthalic acid as a defect agent by precisely controlling the Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ valence ratio and hydroxyl content. Experimental results demonstrated that Ce-MOF not only effectively scavenged the free radicals generated in epoxy resin (EP) during γ-irradiation through the synergistic interaction between hydroxyl defects and Ce, thereby reducing the radical-induced chain scission and considerably enhancing the γ-radiation resistance of EP, but also improved the mechanical properties and thermal stability of EP via chemical bonding and hydrogen bonding. The oxidation inhibition rate improved from −34.2% for pure EP to −6.2% for EP/Ce-MOF-OH3. Furthermore, the material maintained high tensile strength and fracture toughness even after irradiation, exhibiting excellent radiation stability. After exposure to 800 kGy of γ-radiation, the changes in tensile strength and fracture toughness of pure EP were −23.05% and −24.07%, respectively, while the changes in those of EP/Ce-MOF-OH3 were only −9.75% and −5.39%, respectively. This study provides a new strategy for developing advanced radiation-resistant materials with considerable application potential.
