Visualization of the ion exchange mechanism for 137Cs and 90Sr decontamination is important for safe radioactive liquid waste reprocessing and emergency response improvement in the event of a nuclear accident. Here, the remediation of Cs+ and Sr2+ was achieved through ion exchange using a cadmium selenidostannate, [CH3NH3]3[NH4]3Cd4Sn3Se13·3H2O (CdSnSe-1), with rapid exchange kinetics, high β/γ radiation resistances, broad pH durability and facile elution. The framework constructed from mono-lacunary supertetrahedral clusters features a great negative charge density of 3.27 × 10−3 that accounts for the superhigh exchange capacities of 371.4 (Cs+) and 128.4 mg g−1 (Sr2+). Single-crystal structural analysis on the exchanger during the “pristine–ion exchange–elution” cycle supplies instructive information to elucidate the uptake and recycle mechanism for Cs+ and Sr2+. The broken symmetry of the cluster caused by a vacant site, combined with the co-templating effects of mixed methylammonium/ammonium, contributes to the formation of voids I and II that show adsorption activity for both Cs+ and K+ ions. In comparison, the divalent Sr2+ ions with higher hydration degree exchange with (alkyl)ammonium cations in a 1 : 2 molar ratio, resulting in its location at a new void (III) closer to the framework and thus a higher binding strength. The energy variation during the adsorption process based on a DFT calculation illustrates the high efficiency of CdSnSe-1 for capture of both Cs+ and Sr2+. This “visualized” ion exchange underlines the robustness and flexibility of CdSnSe-1 as a Cs+ and Sr2+ trapper, and reveals the deeper structure–function relationship from a new surface interaction viewpoint.

Vertical-oriented Cs-doped rutile TiO 2 nanorod (Cs-TiO 2 NR) arrays were prepared without a seed layer through the hydrothermal method . One-dimension TiO 2 nanorod (TiO 2 NR) arrays not only provide a direct and fast channel for charge transfer but also increase the perovskite loading amount. Further research shows that the conduction band minimum of Cs-TiO 2 NRs increases from − 3.94 eV to − 3.86 eV when compared with the pristine TiO 2 NRs, which favors the positive band alignment at the ETL/perovskite interface and reduces the carrier recombination and energy loss. Furthermore, we simultaneously replaced the expensive and unstable organic hole transport layer and noble metal electrode with a carbon electrode for the purpose of reducing the cost of the PSCs . The study proves that Cs-TiO 2 NRs not only improve the energy level arrangement at the ETL/perovskite interface but also reduce the density of defect states at the interface and increase carrier lifetime. The hole-transport-material-free carbon-based all-inorganic FTO/Cs-TiO 2 NRs/CsPbI 2.25 Br 0.75 /C solar devices exhibited a high-power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 12.72%, showing a 16% increase in PCE when compared with the control device. This work opens the door to the preparation of high-efficiency hole-transport-material-free carbon-based all-inorganic PSCs via the energy level calibration engineering.

The need for high-performance and novel technologies for selective treatment of radionuclides in water has recently stimulated broad research. In this study, we examined the ability of carbon nanotube (CNT) membranes in selective removal of strontium (Sr 2+ ) and cesium (Cs + ) from water and wastewater. In single-metal systems that contained only Sr 2+ , Cs + or their competitive metal ions, the distribution coefficients ( K d ) of functionalized CNT membranes for divalent cations, i.e., Sr 2+ , Ca 2+ , and Mg 2+ , were measured as 4.41 mmol g −1 , 2.14 mmol g −1 , and 1.30 mmol g −1 , respectively, and those for monovalent cations, i.e., Cs + , K + and Na + , were 0.81 mmol g −1 , 0.79 mmol g −1 , and 0.81 mmol g −1 , respectively. When Cs + or Sr 2+ co-existed with a competing cation, both pristine and functionalized CNT membranes showed excellent selectivity to Sr 2+ over Mg 2+ and Ca 2+ while their selectivity to Cs + over K + and Na + diminished. Moreover, the CNT membranes remained their selectivity for Sr 2+ in a wastewater effluent despite the complex water composition. Overall, the selectivity sequence of the CNT membranes for divalent cations support the occurrence of inner-sphere complexation on CNT surfaces, while that for the monovalent cations was probably determined by electrostatic interactions. This study demonstrates that Ar/O 2 plasma treatment is a greener technology for the production of CNT functionalized membranes for selective removal of contaminants from water to achieve “fit-for-purpose” treatment.

Currently, the most effective way to improve the anti-fouling performance of water treatment separation membrane is to enhance the hydrophilicity of the membrane surface, but it can still cause contamination, leading to the occurrence of flux reduction. The construction of a strong hydration layer to resist wastewater contamination is still a challenging task. In this study, a defect-free hydration layer barrier was achieved by grafting chitosan polysaccharide derivatives (CS-SDAEM) on the membrane, which achieved in effective fouling prevention and low flux decline rate. A layer of tannic acid-coated carbon nanotubes (TA@CNTs) has been uniformly deposited on the commercial PVDF membrane so that the surface was rich in -COOH groups, providing sufficient reaction sites. These reactive groups facilitate the grafting of amphiphilic polymers onto the membrane. This modification strategy achieved in enhancing the antifouling performance. The modified membrane achieved low contamination rate with DR of 16.9 % for wastewater filtration, and the flux recovery rate was above 95 % with PWF of 1100 (L·m −2 ·h −1 ). The membrane had excellent anti-fouling performance, which provided a new route for the future development of water treatment membrane.

Narrow band red-emitting A2GeF6:Mn4+ (A = Na, K, Rb, Cs) phosphors were prepared through a two-step precipitation–cation exchange route using a K2MnF6 precursor as the Mn4+ source. The phase purity, morphology, and constituent were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectric spectroscopy (XPS), and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) examination. Optical properties were investigated by photoluminescence spectra (PL and PLE) and high-resolution PL. A temperature-dependent PL examination was performed to investigate the electron–phonon coupling emission mechanism of Mn4+ in these alkali fluorogermanates. The PL data show that both ordered distribution and appropriate distance between Mn4+ ions are propitious for enhancement of the emission intensity. A resonance emission enhancement (REE) mechanism has been proposed to explain the intensity increment among these products. These phosphors present bright red emission under blue light (467 nm) illumination, among which Cs2GeF6:0.03Mn4+ exhibits the most excellent optical properties with a quantum yield (QY) of 93%. A WLED (white light-emitting diode) fabricated with blend of commercial YAG:Ce3+ and this phosphor emits intense warm white light with low color temperature (CCT = 3385 K) and high color rendering index (Ra = 90.5), implying its potential application as red phosphor in WLEDs.

Mn2+-doped luminescent materials play a significant role in a variety of fields, including modern lighting, displays, and imaging. Mn2+ exhibits a broad and adjustable emission, hinging on the local environment of the crystal field and the interaction of the 3d5 electrons. However, it is still a challenge to realize the precise control of the emission of Mn2+ ions due to site-prior occupation in a specific lattice. Here, the formation of Mn–Mn dimers is proposed to be an effective strategy to design a novel red emission. Multimode emitters in Mn2+-activated AZn4(PO4)3 (A = K, Rb, and Cs) with unique [Zn4PO12] chains and [ZnOn] groups are observed to achieve regular green and unusual red emissions. KZn4(PO4)3:Mn2+ shows broad dual emissions at 542 and 608 nm, attributed to [MnO4] and [Mn2O7] dimers, respectively. While K is replaced with Rb and Cs, the Zn ions form [ZnO4] tetrahedra and [ZnO5] octahedra. RbZn4(PO4)3:Mn2+ exhibits a broad red emission at 618 nm, ascribing to [Mn2O7] and [Mn2O8] dimers. CsZn4(PO4)3:Mn2+ also displays a broad orange-red emission at 608–620 nm with increasing doping levels, deriving from energy transfer from [MnO5] to [Mn2O7] and [Mn2O8] dimers. This work provides a framework for creating novel red emissions from Mn2+-doped luminescent materials.

Aeromonas sobria , recognized as a psychrotrophic specific spoilage organism in refrigerated aquatic products, facilitates its proliferation by metabolizing proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates, thereby generating spoilage-associated metabolites and compromising product quality. Quorum sensing (QS), a bacterial cell-to-cell communication mechanism, orchestrates the secretion of virulence and spoilage factors in A. sobria via the LuxI/R QS system. Targeting this regulatory pathway presents a novel strategy to mitigate spoilage and extend the shelf life of aquatic products. Previous studies have demonstrated that zingerone (ZRN) exhibits quorum-quenching activity at sub-inhibitory concentrations; however, its practical application is constrained by limited solubility and bioavailability. To overcome these challenges, ZRN was encapsulated within halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) and incorporated into a self-assembled composite film composed of chitosan (CS) and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-Na). The fabricated film was characterized for its structural, thermal, and mechanical properties and subsequently evaluated for its preservation efficacy on refrigerated perch fillets. The composite film exhibited a homogeneous surface morphology with uniformly dispersed HNTs, alongside adequate thermal stability, tensile strength, and physicochemical attributes suitable for refrigerated aquatic product preservation. Notably, the film suppressed spoilage indicators, including total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) accumulation, lipid peroxidation, and bacterial spoilage potential, without inhibiting A. sobria growth. Furthermore, it mitigated muscle tissue degradation and biogenic amine formation in perch fillets during refrigerated storage. Molecular docking simulations revealed that ZRN competitively binds to the LuxR-type receptor at the same binding pocket as the endogenous autoinducer C 4 -HSL, thereby disrupting QS signaling. Collectively, this ZRN-loaded composite film represents a promising biodegradable packaging solution for enhancing the quality and shelf life of refrigerated aquatic foods.

Based on the crystal structure of A2Cu5(TeO3)(SO4)3(OH)4 (A = Na, K), two new compounds ACo5(SeO3)4(OH)2F (A = Rb, Cs) have been synthesized by introducing F− ions, achieving the extension from a one-dimensional kagomé strip lattice to a distorted 2-uniform lattice (T29). Magnetic measurements indicate that RbCo5 exhibits antiferromagnetic order at low temperatures, while CsCo5 shows canted antiferromagnetic behavior. Both compounds display a field-induced magnetic transition at their respective critical fields. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported synthesis of compounds with a distorted 2-uniform lattice (T29).

137 Cs and 131 I exhibit pronounced radiotoxicity, prolonged environmental persistence, and high mobility, posing dual threats to ecosystems and human health. The simultaneous removal of Cs + and I − using a single adsorbent is an area of growing research interest. In this study, a rationally designed dual-imprinted membrane (IPA-MC) was engineered via electrospinning and ion-imprinting technology for selective cesium and iodine adsorption. Crosslinking of zwitterionic polyethyleneimine-acrylic acid (PEI-AA) yielded hierarchical porous structures, which enhanced adsorption selectivity and capacity. Optimal adsorption performance occurred at pH 6.0, and its adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order model, indicating that chemical adsorption was the dominant mechanism mechanisms. IPA-MC maintained efficient and selective adsorption in the presence of interfering ions and demonstrated excellent regeneration capacity. Synergistic amino-carboxyl interactions enhanced adsorption for Cs + and I − , with particularly high efficiency for iodine removal. This work demonstrates an effective strategy for the selective extraction of nuclides using composites through multiple interactions. These composites show significant potential for radioactive wastewater treatment applications.

A series of new PMDA@CS/PVA composite membranes were fabricated by the crosslinking of pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) with chitosan (CS) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) in the presence of glutaraldehyde (GA) as a crosslinking agent. While, their adsorptions for Cu(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) in a single- and multiple mixed solutions were investigated. It was found that the incorporation of PMDA in the membranes can significantly enhance the adsorption capacity of membranes for these metals. The fitting of kinetic modeling s showed that the sorption manner of Cu(II), Co(II) and Ni(II) on the membranes obeyed the quasi-2nd kinetic modeling, indicating that it was dominated by chemisorption. The kinetic rate constants K 2 of membranes A-E for Cu(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) were in the region of 0.005–0.02, 0.026–0.082, and 0.002–0.053 [g/(h·mg)], respectively. The fitting of sorption isotherm modeling followed the Langmuir isotherm equation and the maximal Langmuir adsorption capacities for Cu(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) could reach 36.466, 32.119, and 30.916 mg/g, respectively. In addition, in the multi-component solutions, these membranes exhibited better selection for Cu(II) in Cu(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) mixed solutions. Moreover, it can be recycled five times when an EDTA was used as a de-sorbent. The exploration based on statistical physics principle confirmed that the adsorption of these membranes for Cu(II) is a mono-ion manner. These findings suggest that PMDA@CS/PVA composite membranes are promising sorbents for the removal of toxic metal ions from waste vehicle power batteries or metal-bearing wastewater.

Supported Cs-based catalysts are considered as potential candidates for methyl methacrylate (MMA) synthesis via one-step aldol condensation, but they suffer from low activity. In this paper, the acid–base properties of the Cs/SiO2 catalyst were modulated by loading different amounts of the Al element. The changes in structural and physicochemical properties following Al introduction were revealed by a series of characterizations. In-depth investigation of the catalytic mechanism through in situ DRIFT combined with DFT calculations unveiled the synergistic effects between the Al and Cs components on the promotion of catalytic performance. The results showed that the presence of Al species facilitated the formation of weak and medium acid and base sites, along with the dispersion of the active Cs component, leading to an improvement of MMA yield. Additionally, the kinetic studies indicated that the addition of Al efficiently reduced the activation energy in comparison to pristine Cs/SiO2.

Four alkali metal bismuth sulfates, NaBi(SO 4 ) 2 · H 2 O ( 1 ) and ABi(SO 4 ) 2 [A = K ( 2 ), Rb ( 3 ), Cs ( 4 )], were successfully synthesized by hydrothermal methods. The crystal structure of 1 features a three-dimensional tunnel framework constructed by BiO 9 tri-capped trigonal prisms and SO 4 tetrahedra interconnected via common corners and edges. Compound 2 exhibits a two-dimensional 2 ∞ [Bi(SO 4 ) 2 ] – double-layered structure, assembled by one-dimensional 1 ∞ [BiS(1)O 4 ] + chains which are linked via S(2)O 4 2– tetrahedra. The isostructural compounds 3 and 4 possess a two-dimensional layered structure, and the layers being composed by BiO 8 square antiprism and SO 4 tetrahedra. The alkali metal cations are located between the layers or in the tunnels of the structures, respectively. The differences in the crystal structures of the title compounds can mainly be attributed to the different sizes of the alkali metal cations and their different coordination environments. Thermogravimetric analysis evidence that compound 1 losses one equivalent of water at 120 °C whereas the anhydrous compounds 2 – 4 are stable up to about 450, 575, and 578 °C, respectively. The solid-state UV/Vis/NIR diffuse reflectance spectra indicate bandgaps of approximately 4.48, 4.43, 3.98, and 3.96 eV for compounds 1 – 4 , respectively.
