Cu nanoparticles exhibit excellent properties as high-temperature-resistant, conductive, heat-dissipating, and connecting materials. However, their susceptibility to oxidation poses a major challenge to the production of high-quality sintered bodies in the air, severely limiting their widespread adoption in power electronics packaging. This study presents a novel approach to the synthesis of Cu nanoparticles capped with oleylamine ligands. By employing a simple solvent-cleaning process, effective control of the density of oleylamine ligands on particle surfaces was achieved, resulting in high-performance Cu nanoparticles with both oxidation resistance and air-sintering susceptibility. Moreover, through our research, the solvent-cleaning mechanism was clarified, a model for the oleylamine ligand decomposition was developed, the air-sintering behavior of Cu nanoparticles was analyzed, and the impacts of both the sintered bodies and interfaces on the sintering performance were explained. Additionally, Cu nanoparticles subjected to 5 cleaning rounds followed by sintering at 280 °C and 5 MPa in air were confirmed to be able to produce the highest shear strength (49.2 ± 3.51 MPa) and lowest resistivity (6.15 ± 0.32 μΩ·cm). Based on these results, flexible capacitive pressure sensors with Cu sintered electrodes were fabricated and demonstrated a stable pressure–capacitance response over the temperature range of 25–250 °C. These findings underscore the impressive robustness and durability of sintered structures and the potential for high-temperature applications of oleylamine-capped Cu nanoparticles. Our study provides reliable application demonstrations for the low-cost manufacture of high-performance power electronics packaging structures that can operate in high-current–density, high-heat-flow-density, high-temperature, and high-stress environments. Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 (CZA) catalyst remains the benchmark for methanol synthesis but suffers from active-site sintering and insufficient CO2 activation. In this study, we proposed a dual strategy to enhance and regulate the active sites of CZA: hydrothermal treatment induces Cu–Zn coordination to create high-density Cu–ZnO1–x interfaces that promote CO2 conversion, while subsequent La doping regulates Cu0/Cu+ species to favor methanol selectivity. As a result, the maximum space-time yield (STY) of methanol over the designed CZA&5%La-LRCP (prepared by the ligand-regulated coprecipitation method) catalyst improved significantly from 283.0 gMeOH·kgcat–1·h–1 for the conventional coprecipitation-prepared CZA to 400.4 gMeOH·kgcat–1·h–1 under the tested conditions, surpassing most literature reports on La-doped Cu-based catalysts. Comprehensive characterizations and kinetic studies revealed that high-density Cu–ZnO1–x interfaces enhance CO2 adsorption and activation, while uniformly distributed electron-enriched Cu0/Cu+ species promote H2 dissociation and facilitate formate formation and transformation, together establishing an efficient pathway for CO2 activation and hydrogenation. This study demonstrates a promising strategy for the rational design of CO2hydrogenation catalysts through the synergistic modulation of interfacial structure and electronic properties.

In this work, heterogeneous catalysts of Cu(II)-ethylenediamine tetramethylene phosphonic acid (Cu(II)-EDTMPA) complex intercalated layered double hydroxides (EDTMPA-Cu-LDH) was synthesized by co-precipitation method for visible-light photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB). The synthesized catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results indicated that the EDTMPA-Cu-LDH showed a typical layered structure. After intercalation, layer spacing increased from 7.96 to 12.21 Å. The catalysts showed excellent catalytic activity for the degradation of RhB in visible light. The optimum conditions for RhB degradation were confirmed to be natural initial pH value 5.85, 10 mmol L –1 of RhB concentration, 7 mmol L –1 of H 2 O 2 concentration, and 0.3 g L –1 of catalyst dosage. The maximum degradation efficiency was 98.2% under the optimum conditions and excellent reusability and stability were obtained in the regeneration test. In the end, the reaction mechanism that might exist in the heterogeneous UV-Fenton system was proposed.

With the rapid development of third-generation power semiconductor devices, there is an increasing demand for advanced interconnect materials. Copper nanoparticles have emerged as a promising alternative to their cost-effectiveness, superior durability, and electrical conductivity comparable to silver. However, the practical application of copper is hindered by its susceptibility to oxidation, which prevents low-temperature sintering in ambient air. This study introduces an innovative in situ preparation method for copper paste, where benzimidazole-coated copper particles are synthesized directly through a one-step process. This novel approach simultaneously integrates copper particle synthesis, in-situ benzimidazole coating, and paste formulation, thereby obtain oxidation-resistant and well-dispersed copper paste. The entire process is simple, efficient, environmentally friendly, and achieves a yield of up to 99 %. An encapsulation sintering method is further developed to protect the joint from oxidation during sintering via an epoxy sealing layer. The copper paste was successfully sintered in air at 220 °C, and exhibited remarkable performance, with a shear strength of 60.35 MPa and a low resistivity of 19.25 × 10 −8 Ω m. The method of this study effectively reduces the requirement for protective sintering atmospheres of copper nanoparticles, representing a substantial advancement for the power semiconductor industry.

Realizing ideal deuterium separation from isotopic mixtures remains a daunting challenge because of their almost identical sizes, shapes, and physicochemical properties. Using the quantum sieving effect in porous materials with suitable pore size and open metal sites (OMSs) enables efficient hydrogen isotope separation. Herein, synthetic HKUST-1-derived microporous mixed-valence Cu(I)Cu(II)-BTC (BTC = benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate), featuring a unique network of distinct Cu(I) and Cu(II) coordination sites, can remarkably boost the D2/H2 isotope separation, which has a high selectivity (SD2/H2) of 37.9 at 30 K, in comparison with HKUST-1 and other porous materials. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the introduction of Cu(I) macrocycles in the framework decreases the pore size and further leads to relatively enhanced interaction of H2/D2 molecules on Cu(II) sites. The significantly enhanced selectivity of Cu(I)Cu(II)-BTC at 30 K can be mainly attributed to the synergistic effect of kinetic quantum sieving (KQS) and chemical affinity quantum sieving (CAQS). The results reveal that Cu(I) OMSs exhibit counterintuitive behaviors and play a crucial role in tuning quantum sieving without a complex structural design, which provides a deeper insight into quantum sieving mechanisms and a new strategy for the intelligent design of highly efficient isotope systems.

Summary By leveraging a Cu(OH)F precursor, we construct a disk-like Cu(I)/Cu(0) interface model (P-Cu x /Cu 2 OF) composed of F-stabilized Cu(I) shell and Cu(0) core by one-step pulsed potential conversion. The interfacial region is shown to facilitate ethanol formation, guaranteeing a high FE(C 2+ ) of up to 80.2%. Tuning the Cu(I)/Cu(0) ratio enhances the ethanol yield by 18.5-fold over pure P-Cu, with the corresponding partial current density (j ethanol ) reaching up to 128 mA/cm 2 . This is enabled by a 3.6-fold boost in selectivity for the ethanol product (35.4%) and an overall 7.8-fold boost in activity ( j C 2 + up to 288 mA/cm 2 ). The interactions between P-Cu and Cu 2 OF upshift the d-band center of Cu sites on the interface region, which is critical to asymmetrical C-C coupling to form OCCOH∗, concurrent with a lowered energy barrier for ethanol formation. On the other hand, the ethylene-forming symmetrical C-C coupling occurs primarily on P-Cu away from the Cu(I)/Cu(0) interface.

Cu(II) is generally considered to be a poor activator for PMS decomposition, thus the potential impact of trace Cu(II) on PMS induced oxidation of typical pollutants is always overlooked. In this study, we reported that trace Cu(II) could significantly promote PMS induced degradation of four selected sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs), namely, sulfamehoxazole (SMX), sulfathiazole (STZ), sulfamerazine (SMZ), and sulfamonomethoxine (SMM). Different from conventional PMS-induced oxidation process, high-valent Cu(III) was ascertained as the primary reactive intermediate for SAs degradation, which was confirmed by raman tests and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). High concentrations of Cu(II) or PMS were beneficial to degradation of the selected contaminants. In PMS/Cu(II) oxidation system, all the selected SAs could undergo several different degradation pathways including continuous oxidation of aniline group, hydroxylation and S–N bond cleavage. In particular, for six-membered SAs, such as SMZ and SMM, a SO 2 extrusion pathway was also detected. The potential mechanism for Cu(III) formation was also proposed, which was believed to be highly related to the nature of the SAs. Hydroxylamine-SAs (N 4 –OH–SAs), generated from direct PMS oxidation of SAs, was deduced as the “promoter” for the whole oxidation process. And the generation of Cu(III) was likely to proceed through the interaction between PMS and Cu(I), which possibly derived from the reduction of Cu(II) by N 4 –OH–SAs. The results obtained in this study validated the contribution of Cu(III) to the elimination of pollutants and expanded our understanding of the oxidation process of PMS in the presence of trace amounts of Cu(II).

Effective removal of heavy metal complexes from contaminated water remains a challenging task. In this work, a limestone/PMS system was constructed for the efficient degradation of Cu-EDTA. Under the conditions of 3.0 g/L limestone and 1.0 mM PMS, the degradation efficiency of 10.0 mg/L Cu-EDTA reached 99.0 % in 60 min, and the removal efficiency of Cu ions approached 50.0 %. The main active specie revealed by quenching and EPR experiments was the singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ). Interestingly, Trace amounts of Cu(II) in limestone react with PMS enhancing the degradation of Cu-EDTA. The results of the HPLC-MS analysis showed that the reactive species attacked the Cu–O and Cu–N bonds, as well as triggered a decarboxylation process, resulting in the decomposition of Cu-EDTA into six intermediates. Meanwhile, SEM and XPS analyses revealed that Cu ions released during the degradation of Cu-EDTA are deposited on the limestone surface as Cu(OH) 2 and Cu 2 (OH) 2 CO 3 . In addition, the initial pH and co-existing ions have a weak effect on the system. Finally, a one-month continuous flow experiment showed that the degradation efficiency of Cu-EDTA was about 95.0 % and the removal efficiency of Cu ions was 40.0 %. In conclusion, this study provides a new approach for the destruction of metal complexes and the removal of heavy metals.

Sulfur-doped copper (S-doped Cu) was regarded as an efficient catalyst for formate in CO 2 electrochemical reduction reaction (CO 2 RR), but the selectivity and current density are still unsatisfied due to the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and CO generation pathway. Herein, S-doped Cu nanoparticles were synthesized by in-situ reduction of the constructed Cu-thioamide coordination polymers, exhibiting impressive performance for formate production in the CO 2 RR process. Particularly, the CuBr-thiobenzamide (TBA) coordination polymers derived S-doped Cu nanoparticles (CuBr-TBA-R) achieve a formate Faradaic efficiency of 84.4 % with current density of formate to 6.7 mA cm −2 . The characterization results indicate these generated S-doped Cu nanoparticles are uniform with the particle size of 20–30 nm exposed a large amount of Cu (100) facets due to the coordination of thioamide molecules and presence of Br - and I - in electrolyte. The morphological characteristics and strong affinity for oxygen is the reason of higher formate selectivity and current density. This finding reveals the characterizations of efficient S-doped Cu catalysts for formate and provide a controllable approach to prepare these catalysts.

The issue of water pollution has emerged as a formidable challenge, prompting a pressing need for solutions. The utilization of metal nanoparticles with surface plasmon resonance and semiconductor composite photocatalysts is regarded as a highly effective approach to solve this problem. g C 3 N 4 is an effective catalyst for the degradation of organic pollutants. Its photocatalytic performance could be enhanced by the use of the metal such as Au, Ag, and Cu. However, the Schottky barrier is generally believed to be the reason that Cu can enhances the photocatalytic performance of g C 3 N 4 . In fact, the plasmonic of Cu will also have an effect on the photocatalytic effect of g C 3 N 4 , like Au and Ag. In this study, it is first proposed that the photocatalytic performance of g C 3 N 4 can be enhanced by combining the plasmonic of Cu and the Schottky barrier. Cu g/C 3 N 4 nanocomposites with stable crystal structure, with Cu as the core and g C 3 N 4 as surface coating, were synthesized and characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X ray diffractometer (XRD) and ultraviolet visible spectroscopy (UV Vis) and X ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Then, it is optimized that the Cu/g C 3 N 4 composite material which were prepared with 200 nm Cu particles, GSH as the ligand bridge, and a Cu: g C 3 N 4 ratio of 5:1, have the best photocatalytic property, which is 16.7 times of the photocatalytic property of g C 3 N 4 . Besides, the transfer efficiency of hot electrons of 33% (from Cu to g C 3 N 4 ) under the influence of the Schottky barrier (0.58 eV) is calculated theoretically. On this basis, the mechanism of Cu nanoparticles enhancing the photocatalytic performance of g C 3 N 4 was also been proved through the calculation result and transient photocurrent spectroscopy (TPC), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and steady state transient fluorescence spectroscopy (PL) characterization. The excellent photocatalytic performance of the Cu/g C 3 N 4 composites is due to the simultaneous influence of Schottky barrier and LSPR of Cu.

In advanced oxidation systems, the promoting effect of bicarbonate is relatively overlooked. Bicarbonate, as an inorganic anion widely present in natural waters, is extremely important for water treatment. Therefore, bicarbonate was added to a PDS/Cu2+ system to investigate the degradation mechanisms of organic contaminants. The generation of alkyl radicals in the PDS/Cu2+/HCO3− system was first demonstrated through Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) testing. This study reveals that the introduced bicarbonate ions undergo transformation into alkyl radicals. The presence of alkyl radicals promotes the cycling of monovalent, divalent, and trivalent copper ions, facilitating the degradation of contaminants. The production of monovalent and trivalent copper ions in the reaction system was confirmed through UV-vis absorption spectroscopy and quenching experiments. Furthermore, the change in the oxidation state of copper ions was further confirmed through EPR testing. These findings not only shed new light on the degradation mechanism of the PDS/Cu2+ system in the presence of bicarbonate but also open up new avenues for the further application of bicarbonate in advanced oxidation processes.

In this work, three materials of Cu-Cu 2 O/rGO-NH 2 -4.4/1, -1/1 and -1/10.4, in which the numeric suffices denote the ratio of Cu/Cu 2 O in the materials, were described and characterized using various analytical techniques including FTIR, XRD, SEM, HRTEM, XPS and Raman spectroscopy. To probe the band structures of these materials, UPS, cyclic voltammetry, and UV–vis reflection spectroscopy were also employed. The formation of heterojunctions in the ternary materials tune their band structures by raising the energy level of valence band maximums (VBMs), inducing an internal electric field (IEF) and an electron accumulation layer (EAL) within the materials. Augment of copper content in the materials can enhance the energy level rising. The coordination of N-methylimidazole (NMI) with Cu 2 O of the materials can also contribute to raising the energy level. The changes in these electronic properties bring about a synergistic effect in selective aerobic oxidation of benzylic alcohols via improving O 2 activation and facilitation of electron transfer between the catalyst and the reactants due to the rising of the energy level of VBM and the formation of IEF.
