High mechanical performance submicron-sized Cu2O-derived necklace-shaped PAN nanofiber composite membrane towards adsorption desulfurization application

Qiang Le,Yang Xiang,Zan Liu,Zhilin Cheng

The selective adsorption desulfurization technology is considered to be of energy conservation and environment-friendly operation. However, the ongoing development of adsorption desulfurization is greatly restricted by the adsorbents with preferable mechanical properties and sustainable separation efficiency. In this paper, a submicron-sized Cu 2 O necklace-shaped polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiber composite membrane (Cu 2 O/PAN NFM) was prepared by electrospinning technology. The structure and mechanical properties of NFM were determined by a series of characterizations. The results showed that the resulting Cu 2 O/PAN-NFM has a larger total pore volume (0.0802 mL/g), higher tensile strength (5.65 MPa) and lower friction coefficient (0.2571) than those of PAN nanofiber membrane (PAN NFM). The static and dynamic adsorption performances of the Cu 2 O/PAN NFM were investigated with thiophene(TH) simulated oil. The results showed that the static and dynamic saturated adsorption capacities of the Cu 2 O/PAN NFM were up to 32.91 mg/g and 4.57 mg/g at 500 mg/L initial concentration, respectively. Besides, the adsorption kinetics and isotherms of TH on the Cu 2 O/PAN NFM indicated that the TH adsorption data are fitting to Avrami model and Liu isotherm. In addition, the exclusive notable merits of the Cu 2 O/PAN NFM expressed at the robust mechanical properties and outstanding separation efficiency while keeping the sustainable adsorption capacity after the repeated recycling, which exhibited a promising application towards adsorption desulfurization.

Construct 3D NiCo-LDH/Cu2O p-n heterojunction via electrostatic self-assembly for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Zhaobo Fan,Xiaojie Zhang,Youji Li,Xin Guo,Zhiliang Jin

Hydrogen evolution of inorganic photocatalysts is currently a hot research topic. In order to prepare highly efficient catalysts for hydrogen evolution, p-n type heterojunctions were successfully constructed by closely combining p-type Cu 2 O and n-type NiCo-LDH with opposite electrical properties by a simple electrostatic self-assembly. In addition, because the positions of the two single catalysts NiCo-LDH and Cu 2 O Fermi levels are dissimilar from those of traditional p-n heterojunctions, the extremely high movement of Fermi levels forms a strong built-in electric field, which powerfully prevents the gradient diffusion of charge and facilitates the migration of intrinsic photocarriers. Furthermore, the flower cluster NiCo-LDH is composed of two-dimensional thin sheet structure, which has a large specific surface area and can prevent Cu 2 O agglomeration. Under the condition of using triethanolamine solution and eosin Y (EY) respectively as sacrifice reagent reducing agent and photosensitizer, the composite catalyst has reached 18332 μmol·g −1 in 5 h, which was increased by 8.5 times compared to the pure Cu 2 O. This research provides an innovative strategy to construct a heterojunction between a metal double-layer hydroxide and a non-noble metal oxide to realize an effective photocatalytic hydrogen production .

Facile Preparation of Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework/Cu2O Heterostructure Films via Electrophoretic Deposition for Efficient CO2 Photoreduction

An-An Zhang,Yu-Lin Li,Zhi-Bin Fang,Lei Xie,Rong Cao,Yangyang Liu,Tian-Fu Liu

Photocatalytic CO2 reduction is one of the most cost-effective and environmentally friendly techniques of converting CO2 into high-value compounds and/or fuels. However, the performance of most current photocatalytic CO2 reduction catalysts is less than satisfactory for practical applications. Here, we synthesized a heterogeneous structure by integrating Cu2O and a porphyrin hydrogen-bonded organic framework (PFC-45), which was then fabricated into a thin-film catalyst on carbolic paper (CP) using a facile electrophoretic deposition technology. With improved electron–hole separation efficiency and visible-light-harvesting ability, this film (PFC-45/Cu2O@CP) significantly enhanced CO2-to-CO photoreduction, exceeding 2.4 and 3.2 times that of PFC-45@CP and PFC-45/Cu2O particles, respectively. Remarkably, PFC-45/Cu2O@CP also exhibited high selectivity (99%) and outstanding activity (11.81 μmol g–1 h–1) for photocatalytic CO2 reduction in pure water without any sacrificial agent. This work demonstrates a new strategy to design photocatalysts for efficient CO2 reduction.

Energy storage mechanism and electrochemical performance of Cu2O/rGO as advanced cathode for aqueous zinc ion batteries

Jian Wu,Jinlei Meng,Zhanhong Yang,Hongzhe Chen,Yao Rong,Lie Deng,Zhimin Fu

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) are expected to be used for large-scale energy storage, due to their environmentally friendly, low cost, abundant global stockpile, high capacity. However, the development of high-performance cathodic materials still faces huge challenges. Herein, cuprous oxide (Cu 2 O) and Cu 2 O/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) are first reported as a cathode for AZIBs respectively. Simultaneously, the Zn//Cu 2 O/rGO battery exhibits significantly enhanced electrochemical performance with a high rate performance and an excellent cycle lifespan (139 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles at 1 A g −1 with 95.9% capacity retention), which is extremely excellent in copper-based zinc-ion battery cathode materials . Moreover, ex-situ XRD and XPS results have revealed a hybrid mechanism involving conversion reactions and classical insertion/extraction reaction. when the Zn//Cu 2 O/rGO battery discharged from the initial state to 0.2 V, part of Cu 2 O will be reduced to Cu 0 with the insertion of zinc ions ; when the Zn//Cu 2 O/rGO battery charged to 1.1 V, Cu 0 is completely oxidized to Cu 2 O with the deintercalation of zinc ions, and only Cu + is existing at this time. The results reveal the energy storage mechanism of the Cu 2 O/rGO electrode, which will provide significant help for the research on copper based cathodic materials and expect to be further explored in other ion-batteries.

Heterostructure Cu2O@TiO2Nanotube Array Coated Titanium Anode for Efficient Photoelectrocatalytic Oxidation of As(III) in Aqueous Solution

Wenlan Ji,Yuan Wang,Tian Cheng Zhang,Like Ouyang,Shaojun Yuan

Addressing the ever-growing arsenite pollution in groundwater has become an essential and urgent issue for ensuring the safety of human beings and the environment. It is highly attractive to preoxidize As(III) to relatively low toxic As(V) for further efficient arsenic removal by adsorption, ion exchange, or coagulation. In this study, a novel heterostructure Cu2O@TiO2 nanotube array coated titanium anode (CTNTA) was fabricated by combination of electrochemical anodization and electrodeposition and used for the highly efficient photoelectrocatalytic oxidation conversion of As(III) to As(V) in aqueous solution. The morphology, composition, and photoelectric performances of the CTNTA anode were systematically characterized. The effect of the loading amount of Cu2O nanoparticles on the photoelectrocatalytic oxidation kinetics of As(III) was investigated, and the comparison study among photocatalytic, electrocatalytic, and photoelectrocatalytic oxidations of As(III) was also explored to demonstrate the synergistic effect of As(III) oxidation conversion performance. The heterostructure CTNTAs-1.00 delivered a substantially enhanced photoelectrocatalytic oxidation ratio of As(III) at 95% within 30 min at a current density of 10 mA·cm–2 under visible-light irradiation. The electrochemical deposition amount of Cu2O nanoparticles on TiO2 nanotube arrays (TNTAs) was found to be positively correlated with the achievement of boosted As(III) oxidation efficiency. The high photoelectrocatalytic oxidation performance of the CTNTA was ascribed to the favored separation efficiency of photoinduced carriers and electron–hole pairs under both visible light irradiation and electric potential conditions. The photoelectrocatalytic oxidation reaction mechanism was proven to be ascribed to the active species of holes (h+), superoxide radicals (•O2–), and hydroxyl radicals (•OH). These results highlight the high conversion rate of As(III) by the photoelectrocatalytic oxidation reaction on such a nanostructured anode, which offers a promising methodology for further in-depth oxidation of As(III) in aqueous solution.

Constructing Cu2O/Bi2MoO6 p–n heterojunction towards boosted photo-assisted-electro-Fenton-like synergy degradation of ciprofloxacin

Jiaojiao Wang,Xiaoqing Jia,Denghui Shang,Liangbo Xie,Yi Li,He Zhang,Sihui Zhan,Wenping Hu

The long-term overuse of ciprofloxacin has resulted in its ubiquitous release into aquatic environments, seriously threatening public and ecological security. Herein, a photo-assisted-electro-Fenton-like (PAEF-like) system using p–n type Cu2O/Bi2MoO6 (CBM) as photoelectric catalyst was designed for efficient ciprofloxacin removal. The realization of photo-assisted function benefited from the perfectly constructed p–n heterojunction, which effectively regulated the carrier migration behaviors and drove the directional delivery of photoinduced electrons with flexible reactivity. Furthermore, photoinduced electrons directly or indirectly promoted the activation of H2O2 to enhance the ability of the PAEF-like synergy system to form ˙OH, improving the photoelectric catalytic activity. As dominant active species, ˙OH cooperated with h+ and ˙O2−, leading to the efficient elimination of ciprofloxacin. Finally, the degradation rate within 120 min reached almost 100%, and the corresponding kinetic constant was 208 and 1.5 times that of the photocatalytic and EF-like system, separately. Importantly, CBM-25% still maintained superior removal effect after four consecutive runs, revealing the high stability and practical feasibility of the PAEF-like system.

Simultaneous determination of dopamine and uric acid based on electrocatalytic oxidation of Cu2O-Au and polyaniline nanocomposites

Lingling Lin,Minyu Li,Ping Li,Chenqing Ye,Huanglong Zhuang,Shaohuang Weng,Feng Chen

Effective detection of dopamine (DA) and uric acid (UA) has significant diagnostic values, while the analytical methods with high convenience, distinguishability and sensitivity still need to be developed. A highly sensitive and selective electrochemical sensor based on a polyaniline (PANI) nanocomposite embedding Au and Cu 2 O hybrid (PANI/Cu 2 O-Au x ) with adjustable proportions of Cu 2 O and Au was developed for simultaneous detection of dopamine (DA) and uric acid (UA) in the presence of high concentrations of ascorbic acid (AA) and other interferents. The Cu 2 O-Au x architecture improved the electrocatalytic activity by inducing a modifiable synergistic effect between Au and Cu 2 O. Differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) responses of DA and UA on modified electrodes of PANI/Cu 2 O-Au x showed remarkable enhancement compared to the single-component Au or Cu 2 O-decorated PANI. The optimal ratio of Cu 2 O: Au was 1:1, which gave the highest redox signals for DA and UA. The DPV response ranges of simultaneous detection were 0.01–200 μM for DA and 0.1–1000 μM for UA, with detection limits (S/N = 3) of 0.0076 μM and 0.035 μM, respectively. The sensor also exhibited excellent anti-interference and stability, and was successfully applied to measure DA and UA in human urine samples with high accuracy. This research demonstrates the tunability of catalytic properties in PANI/Cu 2 O-Au x nanocomposites by the integration of binary nanocatalysts, providing insights into both structural and practical aspects.

CaO2–Cu2O micromotors accelerate infected wound healing through antibacterial functions, hemostasis, improved cell migration, and inflammatory regulation

Ga Liu,Menghang Zu,Lingshuang Wang,Cheng Xu,Jiamei Zhang,Rui L. Reis,Subhas C. Kundu,Bo Xiao,Lian Duan,Xiao Yang

During the wound tissue healing process, the relatively weak driving forces of tissue barriers and concentration gradients lead to a slow and inefficient penetration of bioactive substances into the wound area, consequently showing an impact on the effectiveness of deep wound healing. To overcome these challenges, we constructed biocompatible CaO2–Cu2O “micromotors”. These micromotors reacted with the fluids at the wound site, releasing oxygen bubbles and propelling particles deep into the wound tissue. In vitro experimental results revealed that these micromotors not only exhibited antibacterial and hemostatic functions but also facilitated the migration of dermal fibroblasts and vascular endothelial cells, while modulating the inflammatory microenvironment. A methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infected full-thickness-wound model was created in rats, in which CaO2–Cu2O micromotors markedly expedited the wound healing process. Specifically, CaO2–Cu2O provided a sterile microenvironment for wounds and increased the amounts of M1-type macrophages during infection and inflammation. During the proliferation and remodeling stages, the amount of M1 macrophages gradually decreased, while the amount of M2 macrophages increased, and CaO2–Cu2O did not prolong the inflammatory period. Furthermore, the introduction of a regenerated silk fibroin (RSF) film on the wound surface successfully enhanced the therapeutic effects of CaO2–Cu2O against the infected wound. The combined application of oxygen-producing CaO2–Cu2O micromotors and a RSF film demonstrates significant therapeutic potential and emerges as a promising candidate for the treatment of infected wounds.

Hollow Cu2O@CoMn2O4 Nanoreactors for Electrochemical NO Reduction to NH3: Elucidating the Void-Confinement Effects on Intermediates

Chunpeng Bai,Shiying Fan,Xinyong Li,Zhaodong Niu,Jing Wang,Zhiyuan Liu,Dongke Zhang

Hollow nanoreactors show great potential in catalysis due to the void-confinement effect. Yet few studies have investigated the void-confinement effect of hollow nanoreactors on intermediates. Herein, electrochemical NO reduction to NH 3 (ENOR) is used as a probe reaction to study the void-confinement effect of hollow Cu 2 O@CoMn 2 O 4 nanoreactors on intermediates. Combined with the results of catalytic activity, H 2 -treated in situ diffusion Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and the finite-element method simulation confirm that the void-confinement effect on the intermediate is the main reason for enhanced ENOR efficiency. Additionally, theoretical calculations also show that the Cu sites of Cu 2 O@CoMn 2 O 4 nanoreactors are favorable for the formation of *NOH intermediates. This work not only gives an insight into void-confinement effect of hollow nanoreactors on intermediates but also provides a valuable strategy for improving ENOR.

Boosting the electrochemical CO2 reduction performance by Cu2O/β-Bi2O3 bimetallic heterojunction with the assistance of light

Luwei Peng,Wenshuang Lou,Lulu Li,Yang Zhang,Xi Luo,Nengneng Xu,Jinli Qiao

CO 2 , as one of the greenhouse gases, actually represents a cheap and abundant C1 fuel to produce fuels and chemical stocks. Herein, inspired by photocatalysis and electrocatalysis, we have successfully synthesized a series of copper and bismuth oxides with heterostructure by a first co-electrodeposition method and then by thermal treatment at different temperatures. The bimetallic oxide (Cu 2 O/β-Bi 2 O 3 ) at 300 °C with the main exposure of β-Bi 2 O 3 (2   0   1) planes shows the beautiful micro-flower morphology with numerous petals in thickness around 20 ∼ 40 nm. Therefore, the Cu 2 O/β-Bi 2 O 3 heterostructure with active edge sites can electrochemically convert CO 2 into formate with a promising Faradaic efficiency (96.3 %) and current density (40.4 mA cm −2 ) at − 0.97 V vs. RHE. Specifically, the current density of Cu 2 O/β-Bi 2 O 3 bimetallic catalyst can be largely enhanced to 48.5 mA cm −2 at − 0.92 V vs. RHE with the assistance of light compared to the 30.1 mA cm −2 without light. The production rate of formate with the assistance of light can also be increased to 705.1 μmol h −1 cm −2 , superior to that of 536.4 μmol h −1 cm −2 without light. Such an excellent photo-assisted electrochemical CO 2 reduction performance is due to the fast charge-transfer process between Cu 2 O and β-Bi 2 O 3 . This study may provide a new route to directly synthesize the photoactive electrocatalysts with more edge sites and heterojunction for promoting electrochemical CO 2 reduction performance with the assistance of light field.

Designed Synthesis of Cu2O Quantum Dots/TiO2 Nanotubes Heterostructure as a Photocatalyst for Converting CO2 to CH4

Binxia Yuan,Hong Qian,Lan Cao,Rui Zhu,Weiling Luan

Herein, H + in oxalic acid is used instead of Na + to obtain titanate nanosheets through P200 hydrolysis, which further curls to form a multilayer TiO 2 nanotubes (NTs) structure. Then, Cu 2 O quantum dots (QDs) are successfully loaded on TiO 2 NTs via a hydrothermal method using fructose as a reducing agent. The optical, impedance, and photocurrent tests indicate that the composite structure improves its optoelectronic performance. The photocatalytic H 2 production and CO 2 reduction efficiency of Cu 2 O QDs/TiO 2 NTs are lower than those of TiO 2 NTs. However, the molar ratio of CH 4 to CO produced by CO 2 reduction of Cu 2 O QDs/TiO 2 NTs composite catalyst is greater than that of pure TiO 2 NTs. The CH 4 production accounts for 97%, indicating that the composite catalyst has a high CH 4 selectivity. The experimental and density functional theory calculation results prove that the Z-scheme heterojunction accelerates the separation and transfer of photogenerated carriers, and broadens the absorption range of visible light.

A microenvironment-mediated Cu2O–MoS2 nanoplatform with enhanced Fenton-like reaction activity for tumor chemodynamic/photothermal therapy

Guligena Pidamaimaiti,Xiaoyu Huang,Kai Pang,Zhi Su,Fu Wang

Chemodynamic therapy (CDT) with selective therapeutic and minimal side effects has attracted increasing attention in recent years. Nevertheless, the limited H2O2 and acid contents in the tumor microenvironment suppress the efficiency of the Fenton reaction. To overcome these issues, photothermal therapy (PTT) is employed to amplify the CDT effect and realize synergistic PTT/CDT. Herein, MoS2 sheets are functionalized with copper (Cu2O–MoS2), which integrates enhanced CDT and PTT to combat tumor cells. The 808 nm light activated Cu2O–MoS2 nanoplatform appears to be a potential candidate to improve the synergistic effect on the enhanced Fenton-like reaction and photothermal performance.
